  1. In Canada, none of them outside of Edmonton. Most of them were either fully privately funded or governments kicked in a portion but the organizations paid the majority. however, this is part of the problem. The costs and financing of the arenas were all major contributors to the bankruptcy or sell of the Canucks, Sens and Habs. Toronto is a rare success story of private financing for a Stadium and the other examples is part of the reason for the huge increase in the public/private model, IMO at least. But I don't disagree with your point, more creativity is needed here.
  2. As i've said before I think laying this all at the feel of the city is unfair. It takes 2 sides and the City did not change the contract parameters on the Flames. If it was why did the bother to negotiate at all they would have walked months ago. At the end of the day I think redfire is right that both sides probably got some cold feet due to the rising costs and i'm sure CESC regretted their offer to handle all cost overruns. I still think this entire process, dating back almost a decade ok, is a bad look for both the city and club but I think the current climate made this project really hard to push through on. Not just the rising costs but the fact that the government keeps moving the goal posts on fans/capacity probably all played an impact in the decision and CESC took their out. It's still a risky bet by CESC though. They walked over 9 million but what if the costs never come down?
  3. I'm not fan of Tippett either but IMO this is far more on Holland who just has not build this team with a core identity in mind. Run and gun could work but they lack the puck moving D to do it, not to mention they don't have much in the way of scoring depth. Would be smarter to try and get the team to buy in a little more defensively and play a more "safe" brand of hockey but again look at the d core. How can you protect leads with Nurse, Keithe, Barrie and Ceci? You have to roll all your lines to be able to do that, does Tippett have an NHL calibre 3rd/4th line? Tippett isn't doing them any favors, and if they were smart they should have grabbed Boudreau, but the Oilers roster is a mess and poorly constructed. Only so much he can do. Not to mention that their goaltending is at the bottom of the NHL over the last 25 games, which was to be expected IMO. Their hot start fooled people, they are just not a well built team.
  4. Arena deal is officially dead. Both sides had until Dec 31st to waive conditions to start building and obviously neither side did. So far neither side has demonstrated a desire to re negotiate. Really poor look for both City and Club
  5. It was not in the original deal no that is correct but that deal was renegotiated in July and at that point the Flames agreed to handle all cost overruns for other wins in the project. Then the design concept was approved by all parties in November, where the panels were recommended, and the disagreement seems to stem from the fact that the Flames don't consider these "cost overruns" but rather features being imposed on them that are not necessary so they city should pay more. But meanwhile it was them that agreed to cost overruns and them that also approved the design concept in November so these panels are not a surprise to anyone. Still agree, split the difference and move on which is basically what the city has already agreed to do (of the 19Mill the City already said they'll pay 9) but it still wasn't good enough for Edwards and the Flames. it seems to me they are just getting PO'd because costs continue to rise, which is fair but also not really the city's fault.
  6. Thank you, good to be back. I do agree that neither side looks good in this and they should just figure this out. However, it is not my understanding that this is the city trying to making changes or demands to the Flames. From what I understand the recommendation for solar panels and some of the right of way issues came from the design and planning committee, which it should be noted is a company the Flames hired after they asked the city to remove CMLC. From everyone I've read this isn't the city trying to change the deal on the Flames and telling them to pay more, it's the city upholding previously made agreements/design recommendations and the Flames just getting upset that cost have gone up so much on them so they are asking the city to pay more and trying to blame it on a design that they already agreed to. so that is why I back the city on this and it seems like the Flames are not really negotiating in good faith here. That being said you've come this far and we are going to get off the rails due cost that amount to about 3% of the total project? Just figure it out and both sides deserve blame for that.
  7. I thought it was a very good effort by the team and the only reason it was close was they weren't as focused on details, especially defensively, and I didn't think Markstrom was very good. That being said I think both of those things can be expected after a long lay off and the most important thing is to battle, skate and find a way to win. They were good in all of those areas for me. Put me in the camp that has zero concern over Coleman. You want more offense sure but he's been stellar away from the puck and I think, much like Markstrom last year, this is just a classic of case of a high profile FA just not having a great start. This is the first time in his career he's having to manage the expectations of a big contract and being a difference maker so like a lot of big FA signings I see him just trying to find his way but I think he'll find it. He's just too good away from the puck to not have that lead to more offense eventually.
  8. Thank you! Good to see everyone and be back. I'll be back for a while (unless they do another update that I can't figure out how to navigate!) Hope you are well
  9. I agree, this is nothing more than a PR ego war to try and get the city to budge because the Flames have exceeded their own personal limit. It is a classic Murray Edwards negotiation move and is grandstanding to me. The only risk the Flames have of moving is if Edwards decides he is done and wants to sell the team. As long as he is the owner I don't' think the Flames are going anywhere because they know they don't have a better market to go to. Personally I'm with the city on this one. I don't think they make an unreasonable request to have the building meet certain environmental criteria, it always should have been that way IMO, and at the end of the day the Flames still stand to profit the most from this and the city gave them most of their demands in the latest renegotiation. Arguing over such a small % of the project is silly to me.
  10. Hey Heartbreaker. Appreciate the note but I am here. Account got mixed up in all those changes and life got too carried away for me to figure it out. Finally got a chance to read this thread and now it's all set! Thanks everyone and hope to chat soon. Belated Merry Christmas wishes to all
  11. Very disappointed Valimaki is sitting. Though he was good the last two games. Gudbranson on the other hand… yikes.
  12. Kuznetsov is considered an import by the CHL. CHL import rules are based on residency and residency of parents.
  13. First game and first goal for Coronato its also a shorty
  14. last I heard Saint John, who has Kuneztsov’s rights, doesn’t have an open import spot. So to send him back to junior there would have to be a trade
  15. More coming out of the story, specifically the NHLPA also dropping to ball big time on this. What does the PA even do anymore? If I was a player i'd have serious questions about my union and why the heck i'm paying them so much.
  16. This is very well said and good perspective. As of right now all of the parties involved in covering this up are following the same playbook. Get rid of who they deem responsible so they can say they dealt with it and the problem is gone. I'd really like to hear from the NHL, NHLPA, teams, players whoever about how they think this can be prevented, or how can the culture be changed to allow people to come forward. Beach was let down by a heck of a lot more than just Stan Bowman, John McDonough, Al Mcissac and Joel Quenville. Sadly, I don't believe this will happen. I think accountability is one step, and a critical one, and i'm happy to see people being held accountable but changing a culture goes above just firing people.
  17. New renderings being released for the Events Center. Shows plans for the exterior. https://calgary.skyrisecities.com/forum/threads/calgary-event-centre.29262/page-67#post-1751403 Basic rendering of the interior to show the different levels
  18. I wasn't convinced that Chevy deserved to lose his job as in the report it does say he did just attend that one meeting. Having said that, he knew and i'm not sure "i trusted my superiors to do the right thing" is a very good defense in this case. I think he could have, and should have, done more including questioning why after this meeting no immediate changes were made or no investigation launched. I don't like the NHL's approach to this decision.
  19. Have to be very encouraged with how Markstrom has turned this around. I didn’t like his first two games but he’s been excellent every since. If he puts last year behind him I think the Flames will be in good shape this year
  20. It’s pretty sad they even have to move these meetings up. These guys should have been placed on leave/suspended/whatever the second that report landed. makes you appreciate how the Flames handled the Bill Peters situation.
  21. Looks like Quenneville is out which is the right decision.
  22. This is turning into the biggest mess/scandal and PR ball drop the league has ever experienced in my lifetime and yes I'm aware that they shut down their league for an entire season over money. This is going to be a black mark for years on the league and the game. At every turn people involved continue to handle this as poorly as they possible can. It is just mind blowing.
