  1. I ran into this column on emergency backup goaltenders which turned out to be a very nice read: http://ingoalmag.com/news/nhl-history-adds-another-unique-emergency-backup-goalie/ The NHL rules state this:
  2. I have to wonder how serious the injury is to Ramo. Anyone heard? Then we can ask such questions as: - Will they call up Ortio? and will he get a start if he is called up? - Would it be better to leave him in Abby? Would it be okay to be just the backup here for a short time? Inquiring armchair GM's need to know......
  3. Troy Ward in one of his after game interviews recently talked about Joey Mac and Ortio. He said they were both playing well and both giving the team chances to win. This was after a loss he said it. I have not heard of any injuries to either of them.
  4. I could take this thought one step farther and say the Flames have to be sure of what they have with Berra "this year". There is not the urgency with Ramo because he is on a 2 year contract. Right or wrong Hartley isn't ready to give up on Berra. The Flames aren't winning hockey games so making sure they know what they have in their younger goalies isn't a bad thing. I hated the rotation when Berra was getting 9 out of 10 starts. But that isn't happening now. I am neutral on Berra staying up or being demoted. Personally I don't think Berra is an NHL caliber goalie. But I also think that Ramo is getting enough starts and Ortio is fine in the AHL. It would seem a bit of a waste to me to go through this year and still be undecided whether Berra was worth renewing or not. Even if he ends up an asset worth a pick and does not become a starter, then they really have to know.
  5. Not sure we can determine that. (purposely tanking). You certainly won't get anyone to admit it if it was true and the league would come down hard on anyone who did admit it. Goaltending is not the main problem for our placement in the standings. Goaltending (present goaltenders ) may not end up as the solution. We have some other promising prospects too if these two (Berra & Ramo) aren't the ones.
  6. They have such nice powder blue Jerseys though.
  7. I am very happy with the play of our goalies through December and a bit of Nov. Even if they don't end up as Future Flames Starters then they are showing enough improvement to make them both valuable assets for us.
  8. I don't think this would work well. We used to crucify Iron Mike for pulling goalies and he had mellowed a fair amount from his reputation days. I can't see this method above instilling any confidence in either goalie. The fan960 did talk to Hartley about putting in Berra just for shootouts and I remember some of his reply. He said he tried it in Atlanta and it didn't work out so well. He also said that this move was not popular with the conventional thinkers or something like that and he got roasted for it. He did admit he had considered it with Berra this year but decided against it.
  9. Good thing that was not Berra pulled in that game or JJ would have been all over it. AS it is there is little to be concerned about as everyone teams and players go through bad games. I certainly am not going to hold it against Ortio.
  10. Well our goals against dropped dramatically as soon as Gio returned. Suddenly we are playing a bunch of games where we no longer letting in 3-4 or even 5 goals. Clearing has always been an issue for this team and even Butler has picked up his game in that area a bit.
  11. Well we do still have a top 4 D on injury list. With the addition of Smid(kudos to Feaster on that trade) we can now boast a respectable D when all is healthy. I patiently wait for Wideman to return to see what the defense can do then. Russel has been a fine addition and does not play small hockey. None of our D has even reached 31 years old yet. Healthy D should also help our Goaltending no matter who we put in net.
  12. Good call Sheri. I find myself laughing and shaking my head at all the pessimists & "checking from behind kissing" going on around here. You might consider targeting Ramo's last 6 games however with your stats. He has really stepped up his play for his last 6 games to "World Class". Yes I said "World Class" stats his last 6 games. Small sample size to be sure but very admirable and probably the biggest reason we are winning and getting a few point. (Well Gio's return too) Last 6 Games Ramo has played he has only allowed 10 goals and is 4-1-1 .940 Sv%. This is why those guys prefer to talk about prospects who have not played an NHL game. They just don't want to talk about him because his play does not fit with their early predictions.
  13. Seems the "losing" part of the starts isn't the way they are thinking because a good game sometimes this season, has gotten another start even if it has a loss associated with their good play.
  14. ^^ He also played in th loss on Nov 28th here. Kane had this to say about Berra & his play:
  15. I have been saying for some time I think Gilles will end up being our best of all the prospects. He certainly made huge strides in that direction this season and ahead of any curve I could have set for him.
  16. Just 7 games as a Flames prospect and he is doing just fine:
  17. Out of the last 4 games both goalies have earned 3x 1st stars. Combined in those 4 games they have avg: Kings -1 goal allowed Yotes -1 goal allowed Avs -3 goals allowed Oilers -1 goal allowed Do you really expect them to improve much more??? Not sure what you expect more from Hartley on it. I'll take that type of goaltending anyday of the week.
  18. Trouble is we fans don't get to see these guys every day in practice. We don't see their contributions in the dressing room either. So when you say you don't understand some decision of the coach understand that is a big part of the reason why they make these decisions. The other thing is the other coaches. Hartley has said many times he relies on the coaching staff for these "who is starting decisions". It is unfair to blame Hartley for decisions that you feel are strange and especially when you say afterward those decisions turned out.... Doesn't that more than likely just mean they made the right decision and your expectations were wrong? After all we as fans don't have the data from dressing room and practices to go with our decisions like they do. That doesn't even touch on the subject that they are the professionals and we fans aren't. Can you blame them for ignoring and scoffing all the millions of armchair coaches and GM fans who think they are the next coming of Scotty Bowman?
  19. I suppose back to back wins and back to back first stars of the game by Ramo supports your comments & opinions right? What is beoming really clear is your mancrush on Ortio. Damned the rest of them in the running right now.
  20. or adapting to the smaller NA ice?
  21. They said 3 goalies would get the chances this year. They said they would not carry 3 goalies on the Flames at any time this year. That means they had to take their lumps and send 1 down. JMac cleared waivers which is something they said they didn't want to chance but went ahead and did anyway to get Berra up here. Go figure what their next step will be. Call up Ortio? Heat stats:
  22. Just for the record now that Ramo got his start and this discussion is even more meaningless. I guess you are going to have to put Devan Dubnyk in the "Elite Class" for your example because he started 10 straight for the Oilers just before Bryzgalov was signed and brought up.
