  1. The age old problem of judging goalies strictly on their stats rears its ugly head again. You can't do it without considering how the team played in front of them and breaking the season down into specific parts for consideration. Ramo wasn't very good to start the season and he was not given the starts because of that. Everyone here complained when the coaches gave a bunch of starts to Berra instead. Ramo improved midseason and a good portion of that time was when Gio was out of the lineup with injury and the team couldn't score goals and couldn't defend very well either. Berra did not have to deal with those issues very much or at least to the extent Ramo did. Ramo finished the season with respectable enough numbers to bring his overall yearly average up to adequate. He was good enough that the management (BB) declared him competent for the starting job this coming season.
  2. There was some speculation on the Fan960 about the rumour of the Flames going after Carolina's 1st round draft pick yesterday. The speculation was that we were also trying to go for Cam Ward and the 1st round pick.
  3. Except they played Ortio last year when both JMac and Ortio got called up. I think that if they both are here due to injuries that Ortio would get some more starts again or be left with the Heat. Not sure bringing in a younger goalie is sending the right message. It would say that the Flames are not happy yet with our young goalies we have now, wouldn't it? Anyway I was commenting on those who stated they wanted to bring in a veteran goaltender.
  4. I see the suggestion of aquiring a veteran goalie as straying from our rebuild plans. I don't see why we "need that" for backup goaltender position. I can see the mentor part but the reality is there are not that many backups who are better than Jmac(wins) who would offer that mentorship better than JMac does now anyway. You could bring in a more qualified starter type goalie too but what message does that send to all our present prospects and Ramo? There is nothing wrong with keeping the present backup spot available or open should we encounter injuries. JMac has shown he is willing to play or sit as required for the team and even pass through waivers if need be. Wasn't it injuries to Ramo what gave Ortio the opportunity to start a few games and gain that valuable experience? If we had had that veteran backup who is almost starter quality then Ortio would have sat on the bench instead of playing....
  5. Backup goaltenders don't have that much infleunce on the seasons results/standings unless the starting goaltender gets injured long term during the season. We are unlikely to move up the standings with even a great backup.
  6. this is why JMac will do just fine for us for those 1-2 years until Ortio or Gilles is ready.
  7. When JMac backed up Kipper for an extended period, he played well and posted a slightly better than .500 record. I see no reason to believe that he would create the trumoil that you describe.
  8. As for who, I am of the opinion if you have confidence in you prospects then it does not matter the age of our backup. The backup only needs to be with us for a couple of years until our prospects develop. We already know we are going with our starter as Ramo, and at this stage of our rebuild he is suitable.
  9. Screenshotting the page and cropping out the stuff you do not need works just as well doesn't it?
  10. They only gave JMac a few games to start the season and sent him through waivers shortly after. Considering they said all 3 goalies had a chance for the starting position this is not unusual or hard to understand at all. They then had to determine who between Berra and Ramo was the best. Berra had a 1 year contract and Ramo a 2 year contract so it makes perfect sense to then give Berra a bunch of starts as the only real urgency was due to Berra and his contract. Ramo sitting for a few weeks with only a start or two was the fallout of that decision but the realities were Berra was playing better at that time anyway. Ramo got his chance both before and after the injury. After his return he grabbed that oppotunity.
  11. I found his thinking very interesting too. Where I have the most trouble with his thinking is where he goes into depth about veteran more elite goaltenders being the group that skews the stats for over 30 goaltenders. Then he goes to comparing goaltenders to themselves to determine if they peeked at a young age or later. This does not account for team strength/ weakness at all. Case in point is Miller who floundered with a poor team like Buffalo and now will show marked improvement with St Louis at a later age. Those people who rely on just stats won't see Millers awesome play this year as his time with Buffalo drags down his overall avg despite everyone saying he is playing one of his best ever years. I agree he is not ready. Of the 3 goals here 2 are weak wrap around goals that should never go in. I stop short at saying he is not playing well because I did not see his play the rest of the game. The write ups say the team failed to play in front of him for most of the game so.....
  12. According to this blog goalies peak at 24 or 25, not 26 so Ortio better get his time in for next 2 years, or become a member of the senior citizens of goalies.
  13. Fan 960: Ortio was emergency callup when Ramo was hurt. He has to be returned when Ramo is ready to return. JMac was a regular callup at the trade deadline when we traded Berra. He was not under the emergency recall rules. So Ramo gets the start in Edmonton tomorrow. JMac will backup. As for remaining callups Fan 960 says 2 left. 2 were used of the 4 allowed with JMac and Hanowski.
  14. Well JJ has some good points. He wants Ortio in a position to win and to keep busy. I can understand where he is coming from and hope for the same thing(best place to develop.) Heat may or may offer the best place to be depending on who we use our 4 callups on and for how long. When you look at the start of our season we had 3 goalies vying for the starter and backup positions. Ortio wasn't in the picture for this year much if at all. We have pretty much found out what all 3 can do for us short term. Berra now gone and Ramo hurt means we get to step up the study of everyone down the ladder and see what they have to offer too. Ortio has advanced his stock a fair bit considering he wasn't really in anyones radar for the Flames to start the season.
  15. I made no judgments as to who was better. I only stated I thought it foolish to compare the goalies when some of your best players(especially your captain and best Dman) are out of the lineup for the bulk of the work on one goalie and not the other. That is why I said I thought the best observation was if any of the goaltenders gave us a chance to win. In this case it does not matter what age they are or who is going to be better years down the road. We don't need to know that right now or any more the only contract due for re-signing was Berra's and he is gone now.
  16. Personally I think that this team and the goalie stats should be taken with a big grain of salt this season. All the goalies have had periods where they gave the team a chance to win or performed well enough. We are about to set a record for most 1 goal differential games played and that is a good indicator how the team has been affected by injuries. The depth of this team is very shallow indeed and the simple injuries to some key players has had big influences on the teams results. Gio was out and we couldn't defend worth beans is one example and the goalies who had to play during that time should not have to be judged on their GAA or their SV % due to that. Comparing Ramos results when Gio and Russel were both out, to Ortio who has enjoyed the benefits of both of them is silly. This is not the "same team" playing in front of those two... Suddenly when Russell returns from his injury and also when Glencross returns form his injuries we are scoring more goals too. Should Ortio be praised for more wins because the team is scoring now where they were not before?
  17. Times I have watched Roy he has looked okay. He seems to need some work on his high side both glove and blocker. I have seen a bunch of goals top corners just over his shoulders. This could be due to him dropping into the butterfly too early as well.
  18. Ortio http://www.sportsnet.ca/960/calgary-flames-radio/steinberg-gameday-63-new-york-islanders-vs-calgary-flames/
  19. yes confirmed, they still do not know what draft pick is coming back.. BB supposed to be on Fan960 shortly, we might find out then if not announced before.
  20. Berra to Avs for a draft pick.. Go Ortio.... Edit: Fan960 confirms that no trade on Cammy. Jmac is going to be backup tonights game.
  21. Fan 960 just mentioned Ortio is going to get the start against the Kings.
  22. fixed that for you... this is " the a possible " year to do it...
  23. So Ramo is out at least until end of the Olympics
