Flames have more scouts in Europe now, they did it with Ramo and Berra, wonder if they'll consider bringing in a goalie from the KHL or Swiss league for example

Ortio did play well, hopefully Hartley gives him another consecutive start. He played as well as J.Quick last night, not starting the parade yet but Ortio might be worth keeping around
  3. Lol! Good Lord that is some sorry a$$ drafting by the Flames. What were our scouts looking for back then? Crazy to see Detroit draft so many Hall of Famers outside the 2nd rounds. It's just much cheaper to draft effectively, Flames wasted some great draft years on terrible picks back then. It hurts the eyes looking at that!
  4. That's the problem , very few teams have been able to avoid rebuilds. Detroit is probably the one exception in the NHL. It is ridiculously difficult to stay as competitive and relevant as the Red Wings have all. I think the realization of the cap and aging players has forced more teams to build from within.
  5. There's some truth in that. Teams like Detroit for example have always been sound in drafting and player development and seem to avoid the painful rebuild process. I think the Flames got a huge wake up call and are now setting measures in place to ensure continuity within the franchise. I can't say I don't believe in rebuilds because they're necessary in some cases although avoidable. In the Flames case before this rebuild there was not much focus on the future at all, albeit the NHL has just started transitioning to younger, faster and skilled players.
  6. Brought him up in another thread but what's everyone's take on Ryan Culkin? He was at one point quite high up on the player progression list but just can't stay healthy. Here's hoping he turns out to be another piece to this core
  7. One guy who I think if he can recover fully and continue his development is Culkin. We keep having to skip over him because the kid is always freakishly injured. He at one point was slightly ahead of Kulak. For now it appears the Flames have a wealth of young defensive prospects.
  8. I think we maybe all anticipated another Jooris situation where one of our prospects graduates and finds success this year. Kulak was close but no such fairy tales happened this year. I'd give Poirier another 1-2 years before considering him ready to crack the team. It's been awhile since Agostino was called up, he's been pretty consistent in the AHL the last 2 years.

This year we've struggled to find our identity in goal. Falling behind so early on this season derailed any stability in net. Hiller has yet to find his rhythm this year, Ortio deserves a longer look at this point in his career, not sure what the Flames plan is for this kid. He's been in our organization a long time, think Kipper even hand picked him but just hasn't been given a proper chance yet.
  10. Let's agree Hanmys been consistently inconsistent or inconsistently consistent lol. I wasn't knocking his play just saying I'm still figuring out his true value and role...he's been much improved since the start of the year. I still trust Brodie and Gio over him tho but Hammys still so young. Flames were smart to invest in a young D corps early on, we should be reaping those benefits in a few short years
  11. I think it's still smart to draft the BPA, especially this early in the rebuild. Hamilton has been inconsistent this season, not saying he's played poorly but I'm still trying to determine his value after close to 60 games played. So far Ive been pretty pleased with T.Wotherdpoon and Nakladal
  12. The problem was labeling them as one of the best Defensive cores in the league. Flames weren't an elite defensive team last year. Where our D led the league was in SCORING from D men, very different category altogether.

It really is too bad for Ramo, this will really force the Flames to ramp up a solution to their goalie situation. Final 25 games of the year...what a stark contrast to last seasons epic push. I wonder if the Flames will limit Ortios workload to give them some leverage during negotiations?

One can dream! Gaudreau, Matthews , Monahan and Bennett up front is a serious young core of forwards

Tough pill for Ramo but it's about time we gave Ortio a solid look. The dominoes just keep falling for the Flames in 2016. I'm still hoping this all turns out to be a blessing in disguise, either we discover a gem in Ortio or our D really steps up and solidifies our defensive game.

I'm thinking along the same lines as JJGallow..of course you always want a true #1 goalie but at this stage of the rebuild we don't need a true #1. I'm fine with our D playing with more of an edge knowing the goalie might not always bail them out. It will force everyone to up their game, we've been touted to have one of the best D corps in the NHL..let them prove it. If no worthy opportunities to improve our goalie position arise , I don't consider Ramo a bad option..he's proven he can be "the guy" in some fashion this year and last. Besides we don't really have the $ for a true number #1 right now
  17. Yeah RW is a gaping hole on this team, Flames have shown they can put up numbers..that 1st line put up 9pts against the Ducks yesterday. The concern is if a player like JH got injured this team would play and look quite different. JH helps us with our zone entries, elite passing and creating time and space. There's really no one else other than Bennett that possesses those types of high end abilities on this team.
  18. I'm with you guys regarding Hunter Smith, if he can develop his game alongside other big wingers in our pool such as Austin Carroll..the Flames future core would have a great balance of size, skill, speed and grit.
  19. If we could somehow land another 1st rounder this year that would be huge. I wonder if Flames would draft BPA or would they focus moreso on offensively skilled forwards as u suggest. I think it was abundantly clear we lack depth in skilled, offensive minded forwards. We rely quite a bit on our D to score so drafting scoring forwards is never a bad option.
  20. Bennett is a great example of acquiring young elite talent by drafting high. His impact wasn't immediate but he's been consistently one of our best players since December by far..still 19! Janko finally looks like he's rounding into form, Anderson and Mangiapane we know are having strong seasons. If we end up drafting high again atleast that prospect (other than Matthews of course! ) won't have as glaring a spotlight like Janko and Sven had
  21. Hunter Smith..I'm hoping he can adjust well to the pros, if he can find his game he'd add a much needed dynamic. I agree, think once Treliving took the helm he put more focus on balancing size, skill and speed. All of our young D are mobile , puck movers with offensive abilities.

When I used to work up in Edmonton I actually ran into The Bryz in the south side Costco...he's a jeans and runners type of guy lol. I'm actually all for a poor goalie situation right now..if it makes our D men play with more accountability and focus all the better.
  23. I wonder if the Flames will focus more on speed and skill moving forward and step away from the Burke mandated truculent focus. With this new NHL it seems like the "stay at home" defenseman is dead! Puck moving, rush joining D men are all the rave.

Lol that's real talk! Glass half full right? It seems like everything is going wrong for the Flames now , who knows maybe Ortio becomes the best goalie from now until seasons end? Ok that's not going to happen but atleast we'll get a better idea of what the kid's capable of

So..the season is in Ortios hands? Yikes!..Hiller looked pretty bad against the Coyotes. That weak 1st goal killed us early on. I can't see Hiller sustaining this team through a miracle playoff push. It's Ortios show to steal now and I don't feel his chances are much better right now. How serious would it be if Ortio goes off for rest of the season? What do we resign him at before he takes us to arbitration??
