I guess it safe to assume Ramo is done for the year unless Flames are willing to risk potentially losing Ortio to waivers if they need to send him back down.

If that ends up being the case Ortio is as good as gone. If the Flames can continue on this streak and close in on the playoffs I can understand running with Hiller. Thing is if Ramos season is over , we'd need 2 goalies to even give us a chance so they'd have to atleast let Ortio warm up to the NHL in case we miraculously make the playoffs.
  3. Good points, I personally think the Flames deserve a bit more credit regarding their approach to the rebuild. They have come along way in the last 3-4 years. I'd still think of all the Canadian teams that Winnipeg has the most rounded crop of upcoming prospects. I'd place the Flames in the top 3 with our current pool of prospect. Where that places us overall in the NHL is a whole other discussions but things are trending in the right direction for the Flames.

We'll see how much of a chance they give Ortio. Hopefully he's not left sitting on the bench the next 10 games doing nothing. If he doesn't perform well I'd agree his tone with the Flames is likely over. Would be great to see this kid come in and win some games for us after all these years of hype
  5. At the time a lot of scouts had Demko over Macdonald. I guess we can take solace in knowing Brad Pascall had a good pulse on Macdonald's potential. From my understanding, Demko is more of a raw almost Tim Thomas like in his technique whereas Macdonald is technically sound. IMO I don't think a pick like Hunter Smith is of NHL quality. Think Flames just fell in love with his size and he fits Burke's philosophy. Overall I don't take Buttons opionion as gospel and these lists change all the time but it isn't comforting knowing not even 1 of our prospects made that list
  6. So I guess this begs the question of this topic. Do the Flames have a strong draft/development system in place. None of our prospects made Buttons list. Not saying Button is the primary consensus when it comes to ranking but should a rebuilding Flames team be concerned with their current prospect outlook?
  7. Same mindset I'm in regarding how to approach our farm team. It has been a dissapointing season , there hasn't been much exciting news regarding the prospects in the AHL. I agree to give them another season in their new surroundings before passing judgement. I haven't been impressed by Huska and the coaching staff yet. At this point in the season outside of Grant and Agostino it looks like we have a prospect pool of 3rd and 4th liners and nothing more. I'm even questioning Ortios future with the club now. Here's hoping next year brings better results and some real growth
  8. I think Baertschi saw the writing on the wall after Burke publicly aired him out. He pretty much called him selfish and lacking a complete all around game. Not untrue but maybe not the best way to express your displeasure with one of our top prospects at the time. He did the same thing to Kadri in Toronto. Ultimately Sven couldn't take the heat and jumped ship. I'd agree both parties were responsible but I put more of that responsibility on Sven looking for an easier route.
  9. Sutter deserves respect for sure, he coached us to game 7 of the cup finals! He brought us Kipper, and as u mentioned implemented a farm system. We had Dion during his best years, he made blockbuster deals with Jokinen and J Bo. He helped make the Flames respectable again. On the flip side..he mortgaged our future by trading away 1,2,3 Rd picks like they were candy. That same farm team he helped establish lacked confidence because played got buried there as Sutter got shortsighted with a win NOW mentality. He was stuck in the past, relied too heavily on aging vets to stay competitive like Tony Amonte and Owen Nolan..God help us! Overall he did a lot of good and some bad for this organization. No denying he's been the most successful coach we've had since 1989.
  10. It's true..it'd be like crediting the Oilers for "developing" McDavid. You just can't teach natural hockey sense and skill. Teams can really only control the development/transition into becoming a professional athlete. How a player responds and translates it unto the ice is what can seperate the stars from everyone else.
  11. Great post! You covered those draft years well, it's painful to know the Flames are still new to drafting the right way. 2013 was pretty much the start of a new era. Makes u appreciate the Detroits of the world for being so strong in these areas for so long. I still would have preferred Olli Maata in 2012. I liked the Hamilton trade but you have to wonder what kind of player Barzal could become. I think Flames have done much better drafting D men as well. Future looks great with Kulak, Hickey, Anderson and Kylington in the ranks. I couldn't imagine how many more games we'd lose if we didn't have D men that can score.
  12. Oh man almost forgot about Nemisz, Mitch Wahl and Ryan Hawse...yeah those used to be the cream of the crop around here and none of them are even close to being NHL players. Who knows maybe Renaud (RIP) was a gem but we've definitely seen higher quality amongst our current prospects.
  13. I was referring more recently to the Sieloffs, Hanowskis, Poiriers and Klimchuks, even Sven to a degree when we had him. The overhype on some of those mentioned can be attributed to Feaster trying too hard to oversell the new talent. I can give Poirier and Kilimchuck a pass as they still have time to adjust to the pro hockey. Sieloff I've given up on, we all know how Hanowski turned out. Sven had the potential but I wouldn't build a franchise around him. This will likely only increase the expectations on guys like Janko and Mangiapane to produce. Still haven't seen the strongest showings from Shore or Arnold either
  14. Looking back at the Sutter regime it was insane how many picks we handed out like candy..never mind the horrid success rate of those we did draft..the Negrins, Chuckos etc.. You're right it was so bad for so long that ANY sign of progress looked amazing. We have good pieces in place as u mentioned but I echo the sentiment of the Flames still lacking in the prospect promotion department. I don't have much confidence in our farm team development, a lot of the players that were billed as great players have been average at best. With the cap system we need to be more self sufficient with developing talent in house. It feels as tho if our prospects don't skip the AHL right away they get stuck down in the farm until they are no longer even serviceable prospects. Not sure if that falls on the scouts initial assessments or are the Flames mismanaging some young careers. I'm sure a lot of ppl would take Sven B. over Raymond right now
  15. Flames are much improved regarding their draft record. I no longer dread the draft, Flames have had some good success of late. It would be great to see another blockbuster trade this year but it just doesn't seem as likely considering out assets and need to keep stocking the farm. Still a long way to go for this team, overall I think Burke and BT have been doing a good job. It will be interesting to see how they approach TDL and Free Agency this year.
  16. I'd like to think we'd mostly agree the Flames have improved in this area over the years. The debate is to what extent has it improved and what changes still need to be made. Over the years the Flames have increased their scouting staff, development philosophy and reorganized its executive and organizational structure. We've seen some great results over the last 3 years, do you feel we have a strong enough system in place to become and remain Cup contenders in the future ?

    Can't draft Matthews..Oilers called dibs!

Its the truth! They have struggled mightily without Price in net, it doesn't speak much to their team dynamic. They've really got their $ tied up with Price and Subban but there aren't many other pieces they can build around..maybe Beaulieu and Gallager but they have really fallen from grace over the last month. I agree goalies can take years, look at what Dubnyk displayed last season. Same reason I don't see guys like Gillies being legit for another 3-4 years minimum and even he's no guarantee.

There are a handful of elite tenders in the league. They are hard to come by, in some cases u get lucky and draft a gem. At this point I'm fine with us not having that true no.1 just yet. Like u were saying it's better to have our young D and forward core learn to play 2 way hockey. By the time we do find our No. 1 goalie we could have a defensively responsible core playing with all the confidence knowing their goalie will help us win games here and there. Like I said earlier if we can avoid the Montreal dilemma where they need Price to win every game I'd take that route every time.

It's going to be fine! Relax and give it time. To be honest I think the benefit is going through the struggle to find that No. 1 goalie. It'll keep our defense honest. Flames relied too heavily on Kipper to steal games. Look at the Montreal situation ...they can't win a game without Price in net. I rather we learn to rely on our D primarily and our goalie as the last resort as it should be in a perfect world! Flames have made efforts by drafting Gillies and Macdonald to eventually fill the hole but I don't mind us going thru the process of learning to appreciate the value of a true No. 1

Funny how we started the year with a logjam at goalie and here we are midway through the season with no true No. 1 goalie lol

In all fairness it was under Feasters watch. Once they drafted Gillies they assumed he was the better option moving forward. It's a missed opportunity considering that Kipper did nothing but reiterate the importance of the position within this organization. It could have been a crowded but healthy situation , just look at the young goalie depth of the Jets. Flames are now seeing how expensive even mediocre goal tending can be in this league.

I'm fine with the Brodie deal, it's actually a steal at this point. Between Hamilton and Brodie that's a great young defensive core, lots of teams envy that kind of defensive depth. Once Rasmus, Kylington and Hickey are ready we will have a very dynamic group of great skating and passing D men..all of whom will likely still be under 25 with the exception to Brodie

    Goaltending

He's outplayed Ortio the last couple of years. I know at the time Brossoit was the expendable goalie in our pool, maybe they thought Kipper would have stuck around 1-2 more years at the time. Still think Flames should approach this rebuild from the back end, our number #1 priority should be #1 goalie as hard as they are to come by.

Mentioned in another thread I think it was a mistake trading for an aging D man in Smid while giving Laurent Brossoit up. Smid is a regular healthy scratch and is likely on his way out anyway. We have some interesting prospect in Ortio, Gillies and Macdonald but their still a few years away. It would be nice to develop our goalies internally as opposed to the more costly option of trade or free agency. Once we find our true Kipper replacement then this defense can start to play to its potential
