Ryan Man
1. LAST TIME OUT After a 5-2 win against the Sharks on Sunday, the Flames were looking to build off that momentum as they push for a playoff spot before the Christmas break. They did just that on Tuesday with a 7-3 rout in the back half of their two-game set in San Jose. "It's really difficult to win back-to-back games in one building, especially in your division. So I give our team full marks," was head coach Darryl Sutter's assessment after the emphatic victory. The game started out with a franchise record being set when the Dillon Dube, Elias Lindholm and Tyler Toffoli line struck twice within the first 30 seconds of the opening stanza. "Lindy won three face-offs clean in a row, and our defence jumped, and away we went," Sutter said. "They started one centreman, Lindy won the draw, scored. They put another centreman out there, Lindy won the draw, went in there and score ... could have scored three just like that." Previously, the franchise record for the fastest pair of goals scored to start a game belonged to Doug Risebrough and Colin Patterson when they scored within the first 32 seconds of a game against Hartford on March 11, 1987. Toffoli, Dube, and Trevor Lewis found the back of the net while the Sharks received goals from Nico Sturm and Alexander Barbanov through the first 40 minutes. In the third period, the Sharks were able to tie it up but the Flames answered with goals from Nazem Kadri (2), Milan Lucic, and Toffoli to complete the 7-3 win. Jacob Markstrom was strong in net once again, making 24 saves on the night. 2. KNOW YOUR ENEMY Just like the Flames, the Kings head into Thursday's match-up with two straight wins over California clubs. On the weekend, they downed the San Jose Sharks 3-2 in a shootout and on Tuesday, they dispatched their SoCal rivals, the Anaheim Ducks, by a score of 4-1. That victory saw Drew Doughty, Alex Iafallo, Viktor Arvidsson, and Kevin Fiala find the back of the net, and goaltender Pheonix Copley make 24 saves. "It was good that everybody bought in," Iafallo told NHL.com afterwards. "Everybody's kind of making small plays, talking out there, talking in the locker room. We got to keep doing that going into Christmas break." Copley, a native of North Pole, Alaska, who was signed to a one-year deal in the off-season, was recalled at the start of the month when the Kings opted to send Cal Petersen to the AHL. Copley has spent most of his career in the minors, with short stints with the St. Louis Blues and Washington Capitals, but has quickly solidified himself as a capable NHLer with the Kings. The 30-year-old is 5-1-0 in his six games this month, posting a 2.43 GAA and a .912 save percentage. "Our team's playing better right now in front of Pheonix than we did in front of the other two," Kings head coach Todd McLellan told NHL.com. "And when it's time for Quickie (Jonathan Quick) to go back in, or Cal (Petersen), or whoever it might be, I certainly expect and I'm sure the players expect that type of performance in front of them as well." 3. FAST FACTS A TRIO OF APPLES: Jonathan Huberdeau recorded three assists on Tuesday night in San Jose for the first time in a Flames sweater. All three of Huberdeau's assists came in the third period and he was just one away from tying the Flames franchise record for most assists in a period, which was set back in 1986 by Gary Suter. DIVISIONAL DUEL: The Flames have an overall record of 5-2-1 against Pacific Division opponents this season and a record of 9-4-1 against Western Conference opponents. DID YOU KNOW? Elias Lindholm is only five games away from hitting the 700 mark in his career. The Swede, who leads the Flames in scoring with 31 points, has 192 goals, 288 assists, and 480 points in 695 career games. 4. PLAYERS TO WATCH Flames - Tyler Toffoli Holy moly, Tyler Toffoli! The forward heads into tonight's divisional match-up with three goals and five points in his last two games. With two tallies against San Jose on Tuesday, he's tied for the team lead in goals scored with 13. Kings - Kevin Fiala Fiala has been incredibly impressive in his first season in LA and currently leads the Kings with 35 points on the year. He scored an incredible solo-effort goal against the Ducks on Tuesday. 5. QUOTABLE Trevor Lewis' assessment of this road trip so far: "I think we've had good starts to periods, we just have to figure out the full 60 game and not have those little lapses. It's good to win those first two and now we have two more big ones that are both division games, too." POSTING OPEN
travel_dude
Merry Christmas and thanks for doing the GDT. No hate from us to LA (Doubty) or back that I know. All good friends like Toffoli, Lewis and Lucic.

flames for life
Definitely not impressed with the officiating tonight! How many trips or clutch and grabs have LA gotten away with ?
conundrumed
When you're begging the other team to score, they will eventually. 1 shot through 18 minutes. Wow. Nothing like showing up.
travel_dude
Most of the time was special teams Toffee a double minor during a 4 on 4. But anyway, dump and chase isn't a winning strategy. Lucic looked gassed on the shift the Kinks scored. Not sure who he was looking to take, but he chose nobody. The Lucic giveth and taketh. cross16
I’ve actually liked how the flames have shown up so far. I get the shots are the shots but I don’t mind how they are playing. Especially defensively. LA is a really good neural zone team so flames appear to have a more patient game plan.

Not like the Kings haven't had enough high danger chances. We look like garbage. Zero energy. Outshot 10-3, 2 shots in the last minute.

If we only showed up to practice defence, sure.

Too many entries from the boards. Too easy to get squished. And dump and chase with zero speed is useless.
