Alexis Lafrenière: The "Next One" - continued

Alright there,

I've done this with McDavid, Matthews, Nolan Patrick, and next on our list of potential "next ones" is Alexis Lafrenière.

Of all of the recent players who were previous candidates, Perhaps only McDavid really has been beyond "superstar".    But with him being drafted by Edmonton, his future as a "next one" is cloudy.

Alexis would look good in a Flames Uniform, I'll say that.   Like the others, some have compared him to Crosby.

He's definitely got highlights.

Thoughts?

My thoughts are that the Flames need to make some trades with "iffy" teams for 1st rounders.

When we traded for Dougie and Hammer, we didn't have lotto protection.

We blew one year and could easily have given NY a 1st overall.

We need to find teams in that situation.

Can't say we have many pieces that bring that back, but we have a couple.

Teams are learning from that, most 1st traded this year have been protected.  Might have better luck at winning the lottery than trading for unprotected 1st.

How does the protection work exactly?   what happens if the pick wins the lottery?

The pick changes to the next year.

Really it's the option for the team, like Ottawa last year.

Pick Tkachuk or let COL have him.

For a team like OTT, it's a big risk regardless

Thank you.   That's not so bad really.    I wonder if a team could be snagged that thinks they are good but...isn't....

Jersey proved that you can look good but be bad enough to snag 1st overall by winning the lotto.

First step is to get Taylor Hall on the team.

His run is something like 4 lotto wins.

Next step, get NJ's pick

Sounds like a good plan :)

Boston, the Wild, the Islanders, the Sharks, the Knights, are all teams imho which are likely over-confident of their chances next season.   And I don't think we should be giving up any picks right now either.    Kind of scary that I added the Wild in there but it can always be worse.

I still haven't really made a call on Lafreniere in terms of whether he is Crosby comparable, we'll need another season out of him I think.  But the 2020 draft is looking good.

He played with our pick from last year, Zag.

Zag was putting up incredible numbers but fell off.

He wasn;t playing with Lafriendly the whole time.

Hard to project from the Q.

You have guys like McKinnon and Crosby, then you have Poirier.

Drouin and Zadina.

Hirchier.

Need more data.

Had a little bit of time to look closer at this, coming to the preliminary conclusion that I might have been hasty with this post.   I heard some extremely good things but don't quite see it in the numbers.  Superstar potential definitely.   "Next One"....not seeing it yet.

Was last night's game a one-off or did we judge too quickly?

Would have been nice to see Zagrodny (spelling) and Pelletier in this tourney.

The games mean nothing as far as NHL potential.

Knight was bad and they went to Wolf for a comeback game.

I would love to add Lefrenier, just as a potential good player, not the next one.

McMichael is killing the OHL, which is a better league.

sounds about right.    Poor Wolf.    Never stood a chance.  But wow what a fantastic experience for him.

I think he was in fact better than Spencer, at least that night.
