St Louis Announces Retirement

Recommended Posts

Other players have been released/traded before they hit their prime & showed only promise.

Think about cases where a player is prime & traded for little return (Selanne) because some GM thought he saw more in a fellow young player (Captain Weasel).

We'll never know if St. Louis would have become what he became if he wasn't waived, unclaimed, released & deciding he was going to prove he was indeed an NHL player. He might well have decided to be that AHL/NHL tweener until forced to prove himself.

The Flames didn't lose the star St. Louis grew up to be. They let a kid that couldn't cut it go.

Sven was given years of chances but didn't step up. If someday he grows up & becomes a star there's another 1 some will claim was given up on too soon. Will that be forgiven/forgotten if Rasmus Andersson becomes a top 4 D?

This reminds me of Alex Steen for the Leafs...he was given ample time to develop into a great player, but he didn't do it with the Leafs. A few years later with the Blues and it's one of those "Why did we give up on him?" situations...silly.

Very well articulated Flyerfan. I agree with your points, and the players who fit are interchangeable.

The state of a team in any given year will mean certain prospects will not develop to their potential.  Sven is kind of an example of a highly touted prospect that couldn't stick.  In 10 years time there may be a list of player we gave up on that go on to decent careers.

What if Reinhart goes on to become a top 10 scorer?  Are we going top throw out blame?

You can't keep every prospect you have, or you will never be able to sign the newer ones that show promise.  Trading away a Forsberg (Flip) is a different story.  Letting a Ramage walk or trading Reinhart is reasonable, though.
