travel_dude
Effective immediately, Jan. 3, 2015, CapGeek.com has permanently ceased operations. This sudden decision is made with a heavy heart and is due to the personal health of CapGeek.com founder and director Matthew Wuest. While this decision may raise many questions, it is requested that you respect Matthew's privacy and wish for no media or purchase inquiries. Thank you for your co-operation and understanding at this difficult time.
Wreckening
Wow. All the best to Matthew Wuest. Thank you for your many years of keeping the fans informed.
kehatch
Sucks. Hopefully NHL numbers or another site picks it up. Or the NHL simply posts the numbers on their site. Capgeek did some really good things. One of the staple sight. It's founder should be proud. Hope for the best for him.
cfreining
Great website. The seevice will be missed for sure! Matthew Wuest take your time to get healthy again.
The_People1
So, you create a website worth a million, if not multiple millions, and then just shut it down? Why not sell it so it can continue?
Carty
Before CapGeek started in the spring of 2009, we were in the dark about info that isn't publicly released as the NHL has always been tight-lipped when it comes to players' salaries... Matthew Wuest developed a list of confidential contacts and trusted sources that included players, agents, and staff members of both the league and each of its organizations... It was in the spring of 2009, while running his own independent website, RedWingsCentral.com, when a simple request from Detroit fans soon compelled Wuest to create CapGeek.com... "It all started around the cap calculator feature," Wuest said of his work for Red Wings Central. "I built the original calculator on a whim to help Red Wings fans calculate whether Marian Hossa could be re-signed at the end of 2008-09. When that launched, fans of other teams started emailing me begging me to build a calculator for their team, too. A month later, I launched CapGeek.com. Initially, it was only supposed to be a cap calculator, but I started adding layers and grew it to where it is today." Growth is truly an understatement... From a little-known concoction used to help inform a small number of fans about their teams' cap situations to a household name among those passionate about the sport... CapGeek was a unique and very important resource for us all... But as of yesterday, we are back in the dark... Here is to wishing Matthew Wuest a speedy recovery from his illness... DL44
Before capgeek was nhlnumbers.com Capgeek came along and did it better... Www.nhlnumbers.com is still around and becomes the default again after a good 5 yr run by capgeek. SUPER odd that he kills the site instead of other options... Something funny happening there. kehatch
It's possible there is more to closing the site then we know. It's also possible that he is dealing with a serious personal issue and dealing with the Web site (whether that is maintaining or selling it) isn't a priority. Out of respect I suggest we avoid the conspiracy theories unless something comes to light.
Kulstad
If anyone knows where I might be able to get ahold of XML/JSON feeds for things like player data, etc (free = best), I wouldn't mind taking a crack at filling this new void. You'll have some competition... http://stats.nhlnumbers.com/teams - NHL Numbers was the original cap tracker that i can remember.. Maybe ask em http://www.hockeybuzz.com/cap-central/ - Hockeybuzz's Cap Central has a great lay out. (but they may be gone soon if they were powered by capgeek.) http://www.nhlpa.com/the-players/team-compensation - The NHLPA http://www.spotrac.com/nhl/cap/ - Spotrac I found a couple others... but they all pull either from Capgeek or NHL Numbers. NHLNumbers is gonna get a boom in traffic now..

If he is truly on his death bed and the site cannot continue without his direct connection to sources inside the NHLPA, then that's truly a sad loss for the hockey community. I wish him all the best and thank him for all the years of free data we have received from his work. Much much appreciated.
Zirakzigil
So, you create a website worth a million, if not multiple millions, and then just shut it down? Why not sell it so it can continue? Probably because his sources will only talk to him. Feel bad for the guy and hope he can make a recovery of whatever is ailing him.
