Crzy's Mock Draft, June 6th

1. EDMConnor McDavid: The hype is real, and this is a slam dunk pick for a revitalized Oilers organization.

2. BUF: Jack Eichel: He isn't a superhuman talent like McDavid, but he has franchise-center capabilities and is a great choice at 2.

3. ARZ: Mitch Marner: On a London Knights team with a strong forward group, he was without question the best.

4. TORNoah Hanifin: Leafs lucks out and get a phenomenal defenseman to kick off rebuild; gotta build from the backend, right?

5. CAR: Dylan Strome: Carolina is going to have a deep group of centers with the addition of Strome.

6. NJD: Mathew Barzal: Devils go off the board slightly; not a physical specimen, but talent-wise he's off the charts.

7. PHI: Pavel Zacha: Big Czech forward gives the Flyers their first blue-chip talent up front since Couturier.

8. CBJ: Ivan Provorov: Russian defender has earned rave reviews for his maturity and on-ice play.

9. SJS: Zach Werenski: Sharks need talent everywhere in their system; Werenski's upside is as high as anyone's outside the top 2.

10. COL: Lawson Crouse: Crouse is as surefire and NHL-ready a talent as there is in the draft; Avs could use his size up front.

11. FLO: Mikko Rantanen: Panthers continue to build up their prospect pool with addition of talented Finnish forward.

12. DAL: Timo Meier: Dallas tabs versatile Swiss forward; impressed throughout the year playing alongside Nikolaj Ehlers.

13. LAK: Kyle Connor: USHL Player of the Year has tremendous offensive potential; gives the Kings some offensive depth.

14. BOS: Jakub Zboril: 1 year after taking Czech forward David Pastrnak, Bruins take Czech defender with excellent potential.

15. CGYColin White: US National team forward oozes hockey sense; responsible two-way player with offensive potential.

16. EDM (via PIT): Paul Bittner: Huge Winterhawks forward brings a different set of skills to a potent Oilers forward group.

17. WPGNick Merkley: Playmaking forward has a ton of potential; played well as a number 2 option for deep Rockets squad.

18. OTTTravis Konecny: Hometown boy plays a dynamic, robust game; has potential to be a top forward in the NHL.

19. DET: Brandon Carlo: Big, rangy right-hander plays a quietly efficient game; excellent shutdown potential.

20. MIN: Joel Eriksson Ek: Big Russian forward has tremendous skills; could become a solid scoring option.

21. BUF (via NYI): Oliver Kylington: Swedish defender has seen the shine come off somewhat, but still has sky-high potential.

22. WSH: Evgeni Svechnikov: Caps continue to plug away at holes; Svechnikov could be an excellent scoring forward.

23. VANBrock Boeser: Canucks pick up a pure scorer out of the USHL; gives them a right side option in the system.

24. TOR (via NSH): Jansen Harkins: Prince George center has carried his team; excellent playmaking forward.

25. WPG (via BUF-STL): Jeremy Roy: Jets pick up highly skilled defender out of Sherbrooke; will get needed development time.

26. MTLJack Roslovic: USNTDP forward was on fire to end the season; could be a sneaky-good pick in the first round.

27. ANA: Jake DeBrusk: Relentless forward has a nose for the net; should fit in well with the forward core in Anaheim.

28. TBL (via NYR): Filip Chlapik: Czech forward has loads of smarts and plays a responsible two-way game.

29. ARZ (via CHI): Anthony Beauvillier: Small Shawinigan forward is way off the board, but his drive to score is a major plus.

30. PHI (via TBL): Daniel Sprong: Flyers go away from their usual form and take the supremely talented scoring forward.

31. BUF: Ilya Samsonov: Sabres take consensus top goalie early; Samsonov is a tantalizing combo of size and athleticism.

32. ARZ: Thomas Chabot: Two-way defender will need to build strength, but has a solid frame and excellent smarts.

33. EDMMackenzie Blackwood: Colts goalie has been go-to guy in net on a very good team for 2 seasons already.

34. CBJ (via TOR-LAK): Zach Senyshen: Excellent two-way forward looks to take on a leading role with Sault Ste. Marie next year.

35. CAR: Gabriel Carlsson: Canes get a faller; Carlsson has a wiry frame but some excellent tools and a solid first pass.

36. NJD: Jonas Siegenthaler: Swiss defender has earned regular minutes with the top team; all-around player.

37. BOS (via PHI-NYI): Jeremy Bracco: Bruins missed out on Gaudreau, but they'll take a chance on a similar styled player early.

38. CBJ: Denis Guryanov: Russian forward is without question biggest talent available; BJs have no choice but to take him at 38.

39. SJS: Daniel Vladar: Goalies over 6'6" should not have the athleticism of this guy.

40. COL:  Christian Fischer: Another US forward; plays a responsible game but has some offensive upside.

41. NJD (via FLO): Vince Dunn: Can make some risky plays now and again, but he's stellar at generating offensive chances.

42. OTT (via DAL): Jacob Larsson: Raw defenseman has excellent feel for the game.

43. LAK (via LAK-BUF): Erik Cernak: Slovak defender should fit in with blue-collar Kings prospect pool.

44. TBL (via BOS): Nicolas Meloche: 6'2" defender needs some work on his footspeed, but has top-4 potential.

45. CGYNoah Juulsen: Maybe not the most physically intimidating or fastest skater, but he's mobile and smart at both ends.

46. PIT: Guillaume Brisebois: Rangy defender has untapped offensive potential.

47. WPGRyan Pilon: Plays in their backyard, tremendous frame and skating; count that as a good bet.

48. OTTTravis Dermott: Erie defender has a low center of gravity; was number 1 defender on a solid team as an 18-year old.

49. DAL (via DET): Matthew Spencer: Smooth skater has all the tools, but needs to put them together on a consistent basis.

50. MIN: Parker Wotherspoon: Tri-City defender is simply a quietly effective two-way blueliner.

51. BUF (via NYI): Dennis Yan: Shawinigan winger plays a simple game; responsible two-way forward.

52. CGY (via WSH): Mitchell Stephens: Speedy, character forward will grind and had a strong U18s.

53. CGY (via VAN): Thomas Novak: Smooth playmaker has excellent hockey sense; needs to play with more authority.

54. CHI^: Graham Knott: Fast-skating forward somehow always finds himself with scoring chances.

55. NSH: Jordan Greenway: 6'4" forwards with excellent skating abilities will always get a long look.

56. STL: Jakob Forsbacka-Karlsson: USHL forward from Sweden; not the most talented player, but an excellent motor.

57. EDM (via MTL): Austin Wagner: Gritty forward with size still scored 20 goals in the WHL.

58. CBJ (via ANA): Roope Hintz: Finnish forward actually spent some time in the US; smart player with a killer instinct.

59. NYR: Alexander Dergachyov: 6'4" Russian forward knows how to use his size to his advantage.

60. ARZ (via NYR-TBL): Julius Nattinen: Finnish forward is complete package; skates well and controls the puck at all times.

61. PHI (via CHI): Nicolas Roy: Big center managed to pick up his game after a terrible early portion of the season.

I have to admit, other than McDavid and Eichel (was never meant to be), the only other player I'm intrigued by remotely within the Flames' reach is Crouse.  The kid reminds me of a much higher upside Ferland.  He's going to be a shift disturber and he's the kind of grit/size/skill we need on this team.

Burke's dream prospect.

I guess for Dmen, everyone has heard of Kylington and Hanifin, but Werenski has my attention too.

******************************************************************************************

It's funny, in a year with arguably the deepest draft and 2 generational players in the last decade, I find myself just not caring.  Must be the playoffs woes.

I guess I'll be waiting until the Flames choose to research the picks.

Without question the best 18-year old prospect I’ve seen in the few years I’ve kept an eye on the draft. Skates better than 98% of the NHL right now. Offensively, has excellent hands and the kind of vision that makes you go “Wow”. Will battle and has room to grow; might need time to adjust to the NHL-level, but was a treat to watch and will be a force for years to come.

2. F Jack Eichel, Boston University Terriers (Hockey East - NCAA) [28/10/96]

Profile:
The most NHL-ready player in the draft. A physical specimen who dominated the Combine, Eichel is quite simply on another level in terms of his athleticism and talent, even moreso than McDavid. Offensively has all the tools needed for success, skating can get rough at times but the sheer power he generates in his strides give him elite speed. A catalyst on the ice and a true number 1 center who can play right now.

3. D Noah Hanifin, Boston College Eagles (Hockey East - NCAA) [25/01/97]
[6'3", 205 pds][Lefty][PROSPECT GRADE: A+]

Potential Peak: Franchise two-way defenseman, one of the faces of the NHL
Projection: Elite two-way blueliner, 45+ point seasons in his offensive prime

Intangibles: 8.5
NHL-Readiness: 8.5
Potential: 9.0

Aggregate Score: 61.5
Profile:
When people make a list of the qualities they want to see in an elite defenseman, Hanifin checks off almost every one. Footwork and mobility are NHL-level and his elite speed make him a dangerous force. Tends to play safe, which will endear him to NHL coaches, but has the talent and vision to make long stretch passes and rush the puck if needed. Untapped offensive potential, but with his hockey sense and well-rounded game he controls play very well regardless.

4. F Mitchell Marner, London Knights (OHL) [05/05/97]
[5'11", 164 pds][Righty][PROSPECT GRADE: A+]
[63 GP, 44 G, 82 A, 126 Pts, 53 PIM, +36][NHL Comparable: Claude Giroux/Patrick Kane]

Profile:
The only way to describe him is “elite offensive talent”. A scoring machine who can put up big numbers alongside anybody. Battles hard and isn’t easily pushed around, but will need to continue to develop that aspect of his game. Hard, accurate shot and excellent vision and playmaking abilities, and a capable defensive player at the junior level. A blue-chip talent and game-breaker up front.

5. D Ivan Provorov, Brandon Wheat Kings (WHL) [13/01/97]
[6'0", 200 pds][Lefty][PROSPECT GRADE: A+]
[60 GP, 15 G, 46 A, 61 Pts, 42 PIM, +36][NHL Comparable: Mark Giordano]

NHL-Readiness: 8.5
Potential: 9.0

Aggregate Score: 60.0
Profile:
Just such a smart player on the ice. Knows where to go and what to do in any given situation. Doesn’t stand out in any one skill, but is incredibly well-rounded and controls the play like an NHL veteran. A character player who will endear himself to coaches with his no-nonsense demeanour on and off the ice. Can get caught out of position every now and again, but overall has the mental game and skills needed to be a difference maker on a contending team.

6. F Dylan Strome, Erie Otters (OHL) [07/03/97]
[6'3", 187 pds][Lefty][PROSPECT GRADE: A+]
[68 GP, 45 G, 84 A, 129 Pts, 32 PIM, +47][NHL Comparable: Joe Thornton/Jason Spezza]

Potential Peak: Franchise playmaking center
Projection: Top line playmaking center, 70+ point seasons in his offensive prime
Bust Factor: Moderate; size and hockey sense should allow him to carve out a career

Skating: 8.0
Intangibles: 8.5
NHL-Readiness: 8.5
Potential: 9.0

Aggregate Score: 60.0
Profile:
Character player who battles hard and drives play. Excellent shot (though occasionally inaccurate) and has the vision to make plays all over the ice. Not the smoothest or fastest skater, but it gets the job done. Defensively capable at the junior level, but he could be more of a physical presence with his size. A safe player whose pedigree and playstyle translate quite well to a long NHL career.

7. F Mathew Barzal, Seattle Thunderbirds (WHL) [26/05/97]
[6'0", 177 pds][Righty][PROSPECT GRADE: A]
[44 GP, 12 G, 45 A, 57 Pts, 20 PIM, +13][NHL Comparable: Matt Duchene]

Potential Peak: Franchise center and perennial All-Star
Projection: Top line playmaking center, 70+ point seasons in his prime
Bust Factor: High, has had an inconsistent season and a major injury

Offense: 9.5
Defense: 8.0
Physicality: 8.0
Skating: 9.5
Intangibles: 8.0
NHL-Readiness: 7.5
Potential: 9.0

Aggregate Score: 59.5
Profile:
Shows flashes of his sky-high potential, but has yet to truly put it all together. A dynamic playmaking forward with elite skating speed and mobility. Could stand to use his shot more, it’s very accurate, good enough to score at the junior levels and should allow him to score 20+ goals at the NHL level. Physically tends to get outmatched, though not for lack of effort. Huge wild card for the top end of the draft, if he can assert himself more in the tough areas of the ice he could be an excellent player in the NHL. Overall, a talented player whose potential might dwarf a few names above him on my list, but also has more holes that make him less of a sure bet to hit said potential.

8. D Zach Werenski, University of Michigan Wolverines (Big 10 - NCAA) [19/07/97]
[6'2", 214 pds][Lefty][PROSPECT GRADE: A]
[35 GP, 9 G, 16 A, 25 Pts, 8 PIM, +9][NHL Comparable: Mike Green/P.K. Subban]

Potential Peak: Franchise two-way defenseman
Projection: Top pairing offensive blueliner, 45+ point seasons in his offensive prime
Bust Factor: Moderate; still has a lot of room for development

Offense: 9.0
Defense: 8.0
Physicality: 8.0
Skating: 9.0
Intangibles: 8.5
NHL-Readiness: 8.0
Potential: 9.0

Aggregate Score: 59.5
Profile:
The third of 3 high-end defenders at the top of the draft. More of an offensive defender than a true two-way blueliner, nevertheless shows a high capacity for smart play and overall hockey IQ. Needs to play more physically than he does, and can get lost defensively, but can recover more often than not with his athleticism and reach. A bit of a project pick despite his current situation, but a worthy candidate with the potential to be a core member of a contending team.

9. F Pavel Zacha, Sarnia Sting (OHL) [06/04/97]
[6'3", 210 pds][Lefty][PROSPECT GRADE: A]
[37 GP, 16 G, 18 A, 34 Pts, 56 PIM, +5][NHL Comparable: Gabriel Landeskog]

Potential Peak: All-Star power forward
Projection: 1st line power forward, 60+ point seasons in his scoring prime
Bust Factor: Moderate; should be a quality depth forward at worst

Offense: 9.0
Defense: 7.5
Physicality: 9.0
Skating: 9.0
Intangibles: 8.0
NHL-Readiness: 8.0
Potential: 9.0

Aggregate Score: 59.5
Profile:
Robust forward with elite offensive upside. Numbers weren’t great, but as far as talent goes Zacha is pretty darn talented. Bomb of a shot and strong playmaker combined with his insane physicality make him an enticing option for many teams. Excellent skater who drives the net with impunity at the junior levels. Has problems defensively, not knowing how best to support his teammates, and overall just doesn’t have elite hockey sense, but it’s pretty good and everything else is top-notch.

10. Kyle Connor, Youngstown Phantoms (USHL) [09/12/96]
[6'1", 183 pds][Lefty][PROSPECT GRADE: A]
[56 GP, 34 G, 46 A, 80 Pts, 6 PIM, +3][NHL Comparable: Kyle Turris/Ondrej Palat]

Potential Peak: All-Star scoring forward
Projection: 1st line playmaking winger, 65+ point seasons in his scoring prime
Bust Factor: Moderate; has shown strong improvement in weaker areas of his game

Offense: 9.0

Defense: 8.0
Physicality: 8.0
Skating: 9.0
Intangibles: 8.0
NHL-Readiness: 8.0
Potential: 9.0

Aggregate Score: 59.0
Profile:
Newly-crowned USHL player of the year is a slick playmaker. Skating and hands are top-class and described in combination as “able to slice through defenders like butter”. Have not seen anything to dispute this claim, Connor is that good. Smart, smart player who used the extra year to revamp his defensive game; formerly one-dimensional forward is now a capable defensive player and relied on for the PK, which quickly jumped to first in the USHL near the end of the season thanks in part to his contributions. Elite edgework, able to confuse defenders with his fakes and mobility. Needs to gain strength but otherwise has the hockey IQ and work ethic to be a difference maker at the NHL level.

11. D Jeremy Roy, Sherbrooke Phoenix (QMJHL) [14/05/97]
[6'0", 185 pds][Righty][PROSPECT GRADE: A]
[46 GP, 5 G, 38 A, 43 Pts, 37 PIM, -2][NHL Comparable: Drew Doughty]

Potential Peak: Franchise two-way defenseman
Projection: Top pairing two-way defender, 40+ point seasons in his scoring prime
Bust Factor: Moderate; needs to continue to build strength

Offense: 9.0
Defense: 8.5
Physicality: 8.0
Skating: 8.5
Intangibles: 8.5
NHL-Readiness: 7.5
Potential: 9.0

Aggregate Score: 59.0
Profile:
An excellent two-way player, Roy has made a solid transition to being a leader for a young Phoenix team; drives play and plays the game hard, but smart. Excellent passer and moves the puck extremely well, a trait that could make him an excellent option for big minutes at the NHL level. Offensively gifted, nevertheless Roy takes pride in playing a solid two-way game and playing physical if need be, despite his lack of size. Skating is technically good and overall mobility is excellent, but a lack of top speed prevents him from truly being able to use his gifts to its full advantage. A player with hockey sense who has done nothing but succeed at every level he’s played.

12. F Mikko Rantanen, TPS Turku (Liiga) [29/10/96]
[6'4", 212 pds][Lefty][PROSPECT GRADE: A]
[56 GP, 9 G, 19 A, 28 Pts, 22 PIM, -1][NHL Comparable: Blake Wheeler]

Potential Peak: Elite 1st line two-way forward
Projection: Borderline top line scoring forward, 55+ point seasons in his prime
Bust Factor: Moderate; could become a decent depth player

Offense: 9.0
Defense: 8.5
Physicality: 8.5
Skating: 8.0
Intangibles: 8.0
NHL-Readiness: 8.0
Potential: 9.0

Aggregate Score: 59.0
Profile:
Big Finnish forward really came on after the World Juniors. Not a robust energy player, nevertheless is extremely effective along the boards in acquiring and holding onto the puck and using his body to shield it. Excellent scoring instincts and a very good playmaker; decent hands make Rantanen a scoring threat down low. Responsible defensive player and knows where to be; overall, a very safe pick with some decent upside.

13. C Colin White, USA-U18s (USNTDP) [30/01/97]
[6'0", 183 pds][Righty][PROSPECT GRADE: A]
[54 GP, 23 G, 32 A, 55 Pts, 28 PIM, +/- n/a(+17 in 20 USHL games][NHL Comparable: Logan Couture]

Potential Peak: Elite top line scoring forward
Projection: Borderline 1st/2nd line two-way forward, 55+ point seasons in his offensive prime
Bust Factor: Low; should likely make the NHL in some capacity

Offense: 8.5
Defense: 8.5
Physicality: 8.0
Skating: 9.0
Intangibles: 8.5
NHL-Readiness: 8.0
Potential: 8.5

Aggregate Score: 59.0
Profile:
An all-rounder who suffered from a few bad breaks this season in terms of illness, leaving him in suboptimal condition for a long portion of his draft year. Still an excellent talent and maybe even underrated as a result, should he find his prior production he might be a huge riser by this time next year. Excellent skater with top speed and edgework, offensively he’s a complete player who can score and create plays for his linemates at an equally high level. Defensively, uses his smarts and an active stick to shut down opposing scorers with consistency. Needs to gain strength, but will be the type of player contending teams covet as a difference maker at both ends of the ice.

14. F Nick Merkley, Kelowna Rockets (WHL) [23/05/97]
[5'10.5", 187 pds][Righty][PROSPECT GRADE: A]
[72 GP, 20 G, 70 A, 90 Pts, 79 PIM, +29][NHL Comparable: T.J. Oshie]

Potential Peak: All-Star playmaking center

Bust Factor: Moderate; might not have the scoring instincts to hold a top line role

Offense: 9.0
Defense: 8.5
Physicality: 8.0
Skating: 8.5
Intangibles: 8.0
NHL-Readiness: 8.0
Potential: 9.0

Aggregate Score: 59.0
Profile:
Arguably the best passer in the draft. Not an elite skater (though skating stride and mobility are very good), not an overwhelming physical presence, but has enough gumption to win puck battles and drive the net. Offensively, his playmaking is his bread and butter, but he has the ability to threaten with his shot as well if he used it more often. Backchecks hard, overall a very smart player with the skills to play against bigger opponents.

15. F Timo Meier, Halifax Mooseheads (QMJHL) [08/10/96]
[6'1", 209 pds][Lefty][PROSPECT GRADE: A]
[61 GP, 44 G, 46 A, 90 Pts, 59 PIM, +20][NHL Comparable: Brandon Saad]

Potential Peak: Top line two-way forward
Projection: Borderline 1st/2nd line scoring forward, 55+ point seasons in his scoring prime
Bust Factor: Low; plays a very responsible two-way game

Offense: 8.5
Defense: 8.5
Physicality: 8.5
Skating: 8.5
Intangibles: 8.0
NHL-Readiness: 8.0
Potential: 8.5

Aggregate Score: 58.5
Profile:
An excellent all-around forward with a nose for the net. The ideal complementary player for much bigger talents, smart enough to read the play and talented enough to convert chances while creating space for skill players. Physical forward who gets to the front of the net, strong enough playmaker to make plays happen. Skating is above average, acceleration is a tad slow but overall isn’t a huge liability. Backchecks and gets in passing lanes well, a responsible player who will do the grunt work to get the puck if needed.

16. F Lawson Crouse, Kingston Frontenacs (OHL) [23/06/97]
[6'4", 212 pds][Lefty][PROSPECT GRADE: A]
[56 GP, 29 G, 22 A, 51 Pts, 70 PIM, +10][NHL Comparable: Nathan Horton]

Potential Peak: Elite power forward
Projection: Borderline 1st/2nd line forward, 50+ point seasons in his offensive prime
Bust Factor: None; no doubt that he’s going to be an NHLer, question is in what capacity

Offense: 8.5
Defense: 8.5
Physicality: 8.5
Skating: 8.5
Intangibles: 8.5
NHL-Readiness: 8.0
Potential: 8.5

Aggregate Score: 59.0
Profile:
Big body who tantalizes with his combination of size and skill, nevertheless question marks about his overall upside remain. Powerful skater, with decent acceleration. Lays out some big hits, but not necessarily a mean player in the Zacha mold. Offensively, he’s an excellent finisher and drives the net with impunity. Defensively advanced with good smarts overall, has an active stick and solid sense of positioning. Might not be a true top liner, but definitely has the chops to be a big asset to a contending team.

17. F Travis Konecny, Ottawa 67s (OHL) [11/03/97]
[5'10", 176 pds][Righty][PROSPECT GRADE: A]
[60 GP, 29 G, 39 A, 68 Pts, 34 PIM, -1][NHL Comparable: Nathan MacKinnon]

Potential Peak: Elite scoring forward
Projection: Borderline top line scoring forward, 55+ point seasons in his scoring prime
Bust Factor: High; size and strength are concerns

Offense: 8.5
Defense: 8.0
Physicality: 8.0
Skating: 9.0
Intangibles: 8.5
NHL-Readiness: 7.5
Potential: 8.5

Aggregate Score: 58.0
Profile:
Elite skater with tremendous acceleration. A sparkplug all over the ice, Konecny possesses a nose for the net as well as excellent playmaking abilities and vision. A leader who takes the brunt of the abuse from opposing players and fans alike, Konecny plays the style of game that grates on opponents, and that leads to him being targeted quite often. Needs to learn how to protect himself, Konecny is still a player of excellent potential and if he can continue to develop his all-around game, he could be a top player in the NHL.

18. Joel Eriksson-Ek, Farjestad BK (SHL) [18/07/97]
[6'2", 183 pds][Lefty][PROSPECT GRADE: A-]
[34 GP, 4 G, 2 A, 6 Pts, 4 PIM, +/-0][NHL Comparable: Brock Nelson]

Potential Peak: Elite two-way center
Projection: Borderline 1st/2nd line forward, 50+ point seasons in his offensive prime
Bust Factor: Moderate; still quite a lot of room to grow

Offense: 8.5
Defense: 8.5
Physicality: 8.5
Skating: 8.5
Intangibles: 8.0
NHL-Readiness: 7.5
Potential: 8.5

Aggregate Score: 58.0
Profile:
A guy who was on nobody’s radar heading into the season, Eriksson-Ek’s development shot through the roof over the past summer. An excellent all-rounder with a shoot-first mentality, Eriksson-Ek drives the net hard and is always willing to scrum it out for teammates if needed. Skating, while not necessarily elite, is very good, and if he can push his acceleration a little further would be good enough to scare at the NHL level. Overall, a smart, responsible player with grit and the type of player you’d want anchoring your middle 2 lines at the NHL level.

19. F Jansen Harkins, Prince George Cougars (WHL) [23/05/97]
[6'1", 183 pds][Lefty][PROSPECT GRADE: A]
[70 GP, 20 G, 59 A, 79 Pts, 45 PIM, +7][NHL Comparable: David Krejci]

Potential Peak: 1st line forward
Projection: Borderline 1st/2nd line two-way forward, 50+ point seasons in his offensive prime
Bust Factor: Low; responsible two-way player who will need development time

Offense: 8.5
Defense: 8.5
Physicality: 8.0
Skating: 8.5
Intangibles: 8.0
NHL-Readiness: 7.5
Potential: 8.5

Aggregate Score: 57.5
Profile:
A two-way center with excellent hockey smarts. Not going to be a huge offensive force, but his vision and playmaking abilities are top of the class and should allow him to put up points at the NHL level. Sometimes a physical guy, sometimes soft, but his backchecking and two-way play is never in doubt. An all-around strong skater with very good edgework, allowing him to make plays offensively along the boards. Not going to dazzle, but a prototypical NHL center who has upside.

20. F Jake DeBrusk, Swift Current Broncos (WHL) [17/10/96]
[6'0", 181 pds][Lefty][PROSPECT GRADE: A]
[72 GP, 42 G, 39 A, 81 Pts, 40 PIM, -9][NHL Comparable: Zach Parise]

Potential Peak: Top line scoring forward
Projection: Borderline 1st/2nd line scoring forward, 50+ point seasons in his prime
Bust Factor: Moderate; plays a pesky role which could endear as a lower liner

Offense: 8.5
Defense: 8.0
Physicality: 8.5
Skating: 8.5
Intangibles: 8.0
NHL-Readiness: 7.5
Potential: 8.5

Aggregate Score: 57.5
Profile:
A right pain in the checking from behind to play against. DeBrusk has the uncanny ability to finish around the goal; not going to dangle players, but a north-south type forward who will do anything and everything to get to the blue paint for greasy goals. Plays a strong game along the boards, and is a willing combatant when he needs to drop the gloves. Defensively uses his high motor to disrupt plays, but can get caught watching and running around. The kind of player you love to have but hate to play against.

21. F Daniel Sprong, Charlottetown Islanders (QMJHL) [17/03/97]
[6'0", 192 pds][Righty][PROSPECT GRADE: A]
[68 GP, 39 G, 49 A, 88 Pts, 18 PIM, -23][NHL Comparable: Phil Kessel]

Potential Peak: 1st line scoring forward
Projection: Borderline 1st/2nd line scoring forward, 55+ point seasons in his prime
Bust Factor: Very High; needs to improve his overall awareness in all zones

Offense: 9.0
Defense: 7.5
Physicality: 7.5
Skating: 9.0
Intangibles: 7.5
NHL-Readiness: 7.5
Potential: 9.0

Aggregate Score: 57.0
Profile:
Offensively, has all the tools needed to succeed. Elite shot, excellent passing skills, and tremendous speed and acceleration make him a threat for opposing defenders. Defensively, shows a lack of effort or willingness to backcheck, though he improved slightly ending the regular season. Not a question of talent but a question of mentality; can be a puck hog and holds onto the puck too long instead of making the right play, showing a possible lack of hockey IQ or maturity. Doesn’t involve himself physically and doesn’t always play well with his teammates. Talent-wise, he deserves to be among the top players in the draft, and if a team thinks they can work with him, he could be a home-run pick.

22. D Jakub Zboril, Saint John Sea Dogs (QMJHL) [21/02/97]
[6'1", 185 pds][Lefty][PROSPECT GRADE: A]
[44 GP, 13 G, 20 A, 33 Pts, 73 PIM, +2][NHL Comparable: James Wisniewski]

Potential Peak: Top pairing two-way blueliner
Projection: 2nd pairing defender, 35+ point seasons in his prime
Bust Factor: Moderate; still a fairly raw prospect

Offense: 8.5
Defense: 8.0
Physicality: 8.5
Skating: 8.5
Intangibles: 8.0
NHL-Readiness: 7.5
Potential: 8.5

Aggregate Score: 57.5
Profile:
A physical defender with offensive skills. Zboril has the skating and edgework to rush the puck up the ice, as well as an excellent shot and passing abilities that make him an ideal weapon on the point. Doesn’t back down physically, and is a tough battle along the boards and corners and in front of the net. Occasionally gets out of position for trying to throw the big hit and can get a little antsy defensively, leading to chances against, however it has been a steady improvement for him since the beginning of the season. Not an elite thinker of the game, but still a player with excellent upside.

23. F Brock Boeser, Waterloo Blackhawks (USHL) [25/02/97]
[6'1", 192 pds][Righty][PROSPECT GRADE: A]
[57 GP, 35 G, 33 A, 68 Pts, 30 PIM, -1][NHL Comparable: Kyle Okposo]

Potential Peak: 1st line scoring forward
Projection: 1st/2nd line scoring forward, 50+ point seasons in his offensive prime
Bust Factor: Moderate; needs time to develop strength to play against pros

Offense: 8.5
Defense: 8.0
Physicality: 8.0
Skating: 8.5
Intangibles: 8.0
NHL-Readiness: 8.0
Potential: 8.5

Aggregate Score: 57.5
Profile:
A dogged scorer who drives play, Boeser has elite finishing abilities. Plays a simple, but effective game offensively, doesn’t try to dangle through opposing defenders. Gets his shot off from anywhere and everywhere, although he isn’t a true volume shooter. Good passer that allows him to keep the play alive. Battles hard along the boards and can be a pain to play against due to his ability to hold onto the puck. Defensively still a work in progress, but his tenacity and skating allow him to disrupt opposing passes and hound puck carriers. Could be a great complementary scoring option at the next level as a sidekick to a more talented player.

24. D Thomas Chabot, Saint John Sea Dogs (QMJHL) [30/01/97]
[6'2", 181 pds][Lefty][PROSPECT GRADE: A-]
[66 GP, 12 G, 29 A, 41 Pts, 62 PIM, +6][NHL Comparable: T.J. Brodie]

Potential Peak: Top pairing two-way defender
Projection: 2nd pairing defender, 35+ point seasons in his offensive prime
Bust Factor: Moderate; will need time to bulk up and round out his game

Offense: 8.5
Defense:8.0
Physicality: 8.0
Skating: 9.0
Intangibles: 8.0
NHL-Readiness: 7.0
Potential: 8.5

Aggregate Score: 57.0
Profile:
An excellent skater with two-way upside. Chabot’s skating has no weaknesses; excellent speed and acceleration combined with his footwork and mobility make him a threat at both ends of the rink. Offensively, has good vision and can move the puck with precision. Defensively, uses his stick well and plays solid positional defense, but can get caught running around if he gets under pressure; improvement from prior years where he was a one-dimensional player. Shot is decent, but not a true threat at this point in time; should come around with added strength. Plays a physical game at times, but with his wiry frame he can get overmatched by bigger players. A project pick who could surprise some people with his play at the next level.

25. F Zachary Senyshyn, Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (OHL) [30/03/97]
[6'1", 194 pds][Righty][PROSPECT GRADE: A]
[66 GP, 26 G, 19 A, 45 Pts, 17 PIM, +30][NHL Comparable: Mika Zibanejad]

Potential Peak: Top line scoring winger
Projection: 2nd line two-way forward, 45+ point seasons in his offensive prime
Bust Factor: Low; should be able to carve out a career as a Darren Helm type if nothing else

Offense: 8.5
Defense: 8.0
Physicality: 8.0
Skating: 9.0
Intangibles: 8.0
NHL-Readiness: 7.5
Potential: 8.5

Aggregate Score: 57.5
Profile:
An elite skater with the potential to be an offensive threat at the NHL level. Was stuck behind a deep Greyhounds squad, but nevertheless impressed every game with his smarts and responsible play. Offensively, plays a simple game with his skating and great shot his main weapons. An underrated playmaker who demonstrates good vision and IQ. Battles and plays hard at both ends of the rink, though he can still improve his defensive reliability. Doesn’t back down from a physical challenge, but isn’t a huge bruiser. Will be a candidate for a breakout season in the OHL next year, as well as a possible scoring option at the NHL level.

26. F Anthony Beauvillier, Shawinigan Cataractes (QMJHL) [08/06/97]
[5'11", 181 pds][Lefty][PROSPECT GRADE: A]
[67 GP, 42 G, 52 A, 94 Pts, 72 PIM, +16][NHL Comparable: Brayden Schenn]

Potential Peak: Top line scoring forward
Projection: Borderline 1st/2nd line scoring forward, 50+ point seasons in his prime
Bust Factor: Moderate; still somewhat undersized

Offense: 8.5
Defense: 8.0
Physicality: 8.0
Skating: 8.5
Intangibles: 8.0
NHL-Readiness: 7.5
Potential: 8.5

Aggregate Score: 57.5
Profile:
A sparkplug who doesn’t let his lack of size deter him from being a difference-maker for his team. Has become a very solid two-way player in the QMJHL, combining some excellent skating with a solid physical game into a player who backchecks hard and helps shut down opposing forwards. Mobility is top-notch and acceleration is excellent. Has a nose for the net as well as good playmaking and passing abilities. Whether he can replicate his feats at the next level remains to be seen, but there’s potential for a very good scoring forward there.

27. F Denis Guryanov, Lada Togliatti (KHL) [07/06/96]
[6'2", 190 pds][Lefty][PROSPECT GRADE: A]
[8 GP, 0 G, 1 A, 1 Pt, 2 PIM, -1][NHL Comparable: Valeri Nichushkin]

Potential Peak: All-Star scoring forward
Projection: Borderline 1st line scoring forward, 50+ point seasons in his offensive prime
Bust Factor: Moderate; will need to become a more consistent producer

Offense: 8.5
Defense: 8.0
Physicality: 8.0
Skating: 8.5
Intangibles: 8.0
NHL-Readiness: 7.5
Potential: 8.5

Aggregate Score: 57.0
Profile:
A big forward who uses his size and skating to torment defenders. Good skater with a strong sense of balance makes him difficult to knock off the puck; this, combined with a heavy, accurate shot and decent playmaking abilities make him a threat to score at any moment. Not necessarily a heavy hitter, but he uses his body well in shielding the puck. Defensively, he backchecks and plays very solid positional defense, though he could use his stick in a more active manner and he does have the odd miscue like many young players. A bit of a project pick, but the talent is there to be a bigtime player at the NHL level.

28. D Noah Juulsen, Everett Silvertips (WHL) [02/04/97]

[68 GP, 9 G, 43 A, 52 Pts, 42 PIM, +22][NHL Comparable: Marek Zidlicky/Kevin Shattenkirk]

Potential Peak: Top pairing shutdown defender
Projection: 2nd pairing two-way defenseman, 30+ point seasons in his prime
Bust Factor: Moderate; still a fairly raw product, but loads of potential

Offense: 8.5
Defense: 8.0
Physicality: 8.0
Skating: 8.5
Intangibles: 8.0
NHL-Readiness: 7.5
Potential: 8.5

Aggregate Score: 57.0
Profile:
A heady, smart two-way blueliner with room to grow. Decent speed and acceleration, but excellent all-around mobility and footwork make him a dangerous player on the breakout and in the neutral zone. Has good balance and the ability and will to hit and battle, but would improve in this area with more strength. Defensively, he is pretty good at using his stick off the rush; his biggest weakness is a tendency to get overly aggressive in his own end. Smart player who still has room to grow defensively, especially when set up in the defensive end. Excellent transition player with strong passing abilities and an excellent shot; has the skills to become a capable two-way threat at the pro level.

29. D Vince Dunn, Niagara IceDogs (OHL) [29/10/96]
[6'0", 185 pds][Lefty][PROSPECT GRADE: A]
[68 GP, 18 G, 38 A, 56 Pts, 59 PIM, +8][NHL Comparable: Cam Fowler/Michael Del Zotto]

Potential Peak: Top pairing two-way defender
Projection: 2nd pairing defender, 30+ point seasons in his offensive prime
Bust Factor: High; little too much rover in his game, but the head is there

Offense: 8.5
Defense: 8.0
Physicality: 8.0
Skating: 9.0
Intangibles: 8.0
NHL-Readiness: 7.0
Potential: 8.5

Aggregate Score: 57.0
Profile:
Somewhat undersized defenseman has a dynamic streak in him. Excellent skater with quick feet and agility allow him to rush the puck up the ice and get back into position. Offensively, has good hands and wide vision that allows him to make stretch passes and quarterback the PP. Sometimes overmatched physically, but he’ll engage and can lay out some big hits. Defensively, has an active stick and is good in his own end, barring the occasional miscue. Has a tendency to try to do too much on his own, which leads to being caught out of the position on the rush or poor decisions entering the zone. A strangely polished, yet still quite raw prospect who with good coaching could become a dynamic puckmover on the backend.

30. D Brandon Carlo, Tri-City Americans (WHL) [26/11/96]
[6'5", 196 pds][Righty][PROSPECT GRADE: A]
[63 GP, 4 G, 21 A, 25 Pts, 90 PIM, -15][NHL Comparable: Brendon Dillon/Braydon Coburn]

Potential Peak: Top pairing shutdown defender
Projection: 2nd pairing shutdown defenseman, 20+ point seasons in his prime
Bust Factor: Low; grit and smarts should keep him in a depth role

Offense: 7.5
Defense: 8.5
Physicality: 8.5
Skating: 8.5
Intangibles: 8.0
NHL-Readiness: 7.5
Potential: 8.5

Aggregate Score: 57.0
Profile:
A defensive monster with an active stick and strong positioning. Huge range allows him to let the play come to him, rather than chase it down. Excellent all-round mobility extends defensive range even further. Offensively, plays very simple; get the puck, pass it off or shoot at the net. No dangling or insane passing, but gets the job done. A physical player who will punish opposing forwards if they try to take advantage of him, an imposing force along the boards and in front of the net. Might not be a dynamic defenseman in the mold of a Vince Dunn, but closer to NHL-ready and perhaps even more impactful as a result of his defensive prowess.

That was a hectic end to 5 long years of draft-watching, but for those of you that have kept up in these threads for the last 5 years, my sincere gratitudes. It was worth every bit of effort to maintain, and knowing that there were a few people who indeed wanted to know helped push a lot of these posts through.

Next year's draft looks to be quite promising, so don't stop checking those stats! (For what it's worth, my personal opinion is that Auston Matthews might play a more NHL-style game than Jack Eichel, even if he isn't as insanely athletic).

Otherwise, it's been swell and if you ever need an opinion, I've got one.
