Should Calgary take a shot?? I don't see any stats for 2010-2011....maybe he got healthy and could add some nice scoring for the Flames. Also a hometown boy! I would say yes, but with one caveat: Kolanos cannot be the Flame's 50th contract. They're going to have to buy someone else out, or make a trade. That may be in the works already, given the strange callup moves of late. Obviously the Flames are not doing this to sign Kolanos, but if it happens then yes, they should sign him. Kolanos has always had NHL potential, imho. His development was stunted, and then followed by serious injury. Sorry to get off topic, but what? Backlund is ready to go and BMo isn't - Backlund in BMo out Babchuk broke his hand. The obvious call-up for a PP specialist is Brodie - especially since he has been playing very well in Abby. Hagman put on waivers after Feaster was unable to find a trading partner. Byron called up because 1) he can play LW 2) he has been playing really well in Abby and 3) he injects some much-needed speed and energy into the lineup. Also, looks like they picked him up on an SPC (Standard Player Contract). Does this mean they want him to be a permanent member of the Heat this year? Any other advantages/disadvantages? Which....puts Leland Irving 2nd overall in the AHL for GAA! Tied for fifth in Save percentage... If he keeps the improvement up, this will be his last year in the AHL. As well, he has missed so much hockey that he is "younger" than most 31 year olds..as in, his treads are less worn. It's unusual for him to have success in the NHL, but more because players his age are rarely given the chance. When they are, you can end up with: Tim Thomas Johny Bower Wes Walz Pat Conacher Warren Young Fetisov, Makarov (a little different circumstance, mind you) Derek Smith is 28... But more importantly...it's low risk. Krys is already far superior to many of the other players on the Flame's 50-player contract. Having 50 contracts would really hinder their flexibility with making trades. I could see at the end of the season, but Calgary doesn't really need to add Kolanos they have Ben Walter if needed. While I will agree the Kolanos maybe better than Walter, I wouldn't go as far to say that he is far superior. Walter has shown through out his career that he a PPG player at the AHL level. Either player isn't an upgrade over what Is currently on the NHL roster, so either player would be used as a short term injury replacement in which case Walter suits those needs just fine and he is already under contract. I don't have anything against Kolanos I just think there are better uses for that final contract. With Backlund, Jokinen, Morrison, Jones, Stajan, Horak already on the NHL roster the likelyhood of either of these guys getting called up is slim to none. Hopefully Kolanos can translate this good season here to a good contract oversees as that is where I think his career is headed. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
