Gillies has two more years of college, but I will bet dollars to donuts he goes pro before then. And there is no way he goes to Alaska unless he shows up in camp with a pot belly and a smoke in his mouth. As for the Brossoit trade, Brossoit has (like any decent goalie prospect) a 10 - 20% chance of being an NHL starter. If he makes it, good on him. But it was a good trade by Feaster regardless because, with Berra and Ramo getting NHL starts, and Ortio getting AHL starts, and Gillies quite possibly (probably IMO) here next year, Brossoit was not going to get the chance in the Flames organization. If Brossoit becomes a backup, that does NOT make it a bad trade for the Flames

I think Berra has shown more than Ramo. And Berra's mistakes are the coachable kind - over-committing, rebounds, etc. He has all the tools to be a good goalie. As for Ortio, I would keep him in Abby and let him play lots on a good team. He is only 23 and the NHL could be a disaster for him if they bring him up too early. The Heat could go deep in the playoffs, let Ortio run with that. As many have said, our defense is awful and the goalies are seeing too many quality chances - hard to judge them in that environment. But tit will play itself out. As for Berra playing over 90% of the starts, that's ridiculous analysis. It's only been about 10 games. If he plays the next 20 in a row, then yeah, we have a problem. But there is nothing unusual about playing 10 in a row (or whatever it's been).

I don't know what you watch but Berra has been great and continues to solidify his position with each start. He kept them in it tonight. It's only been 3 games - not much to go on - but right now he is the clear front-runner.

On a more general note... Berra is playing well for us at the moment. Ortio is playing really well in Abbottsford Brossoit is playing really well in Alaska (though it sounds like their team is pretty dominant, so hard to gauge) And Gillies is insanely good in Providence If we can get Ramo going, things would be pretty good.

No way can you blame Berra for that game. He was solid again and was consistently square to the puck again. Unfortunately there were a few defensive breakdowns and the Wild made some really good plays Give them credit and move on. Berra will get the start in St Louis and he deserves it.

That was the big thing for me too. Stay calm and stay square to the puck. In the NHL, the D usually know what they are doing. And the play is more predictable. So playing goal can also be more 'predictable'. Goalies that remain square to the puck, keep their head, and excel at fundamentals are the goalies that are successful.

What? They played a few periods each. Nobody beat out anybody. Ramo had the position to lose and there simply wasn't enough evidence to overturn that. However, Hartley's comments were extremely positive towards Berra throughout camp. Regardless of who stayed to start the season, it takes more than a few games to see who's better. Let it play out

Love big goalies - that's why I like Gillies, Berra and Brossoit in that order To add to your post, I thought he got back up quickly, as opposed to Karlsson who would go down and stay down until someone cookie-shelfed it I also was very surprised at how well he handled the puck. Ramo and MacDonald both scared the crap out of me and they (especially Mac) caused several goals against by coughing it up and putting added pressure on the D. Berra didn't handle it a lot (which is good) but when he did, he was calm and helpful. Looking forward to seeing how he backs it up tomorrow.

I have always been a fan of big goalies - I think size is intimidating My preferences have always been Gillies and Berra. Well, his first day was a beauty. Hopefully this also fires Ramo up and we get some mo going. Meanwhile, Ortio is playing well in Abby and Brossoit has been perfect for the Aces. There's hope yet.

Either Berra is an NHL goalie or he isn't. If he can't face the good teams, then he isn't. I have no problem with him starting. Also, it's not like Ramo is currently lighting it up - maybe a good game by Berra is just what Ramo needs too. Finally, it's a rebuild - let's find out what we've got

Berra was the first star regardless

Apparently MacDonald has a career GAA of under 2 against the Habs and Ramo's is 3.75 (yes, that was a long time ago - don't shoot the messenger). Hartley is just playing the guy that plays well against them. Also, he may be going slowly with Ramo just to give him some time to get used to the angles, get more familiar with the pace, etc.

MacDonald isn't a starter. And I didn't think he was great last night - terrible rebound on the first goal and too slow getting across on Asimov's goal. Having said that, he was what he is - a good, solid backup who gives them stability at the position and a chance to win. If Ramo can't seize the job (I think he will), then Berra will get a chance. If he can't ether, I would think that the Flames would look externally.
  14. Good review - thanks Cross. I would agree with the vast majority of your comments, though I was not as impressed with Pelech as you were. I would not be at all surprised if Stone becomes a depth callup for the stretch and playoffs - he is definitely an NHL-level player
