Joel Armia Draft Him

Recommended Posts

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Jonathan Huberdeau, Sean Couturier, Ryan Strome, Mika Zibanejad, Vladislav Namestnikov, Mark Scheifele are the top 7 centers. I don't see McNeill's name in there anywhere, do you? (IMO. CSS says McNeill ranks #6, but that's still out of the top 5)

since when does ability to stand in the crease have anything at all to do with playmaking? You've said several times that McNeill has great hands, but that simply isn't true. Not all hockey sense players have great playmaking skills either. Does the name Robyn Regehr ring a bell? How about Manny Malhotra?

McNeill played for a playoff team in the WHL (and was quite ineffective in the playoffs). Scheifele played for THE WORST TEAM in the OHL. Moreover, Scheifele hasn't grown into his frame yet (what is he, 6'3", 177?) while McNeill has almost completely filled his out. After the U-18's, you have to admit that Scheifele is a better player.

and besides, they've BOTH gone up since the mid-term rankings, not just McNeill

everyone Who has responded to this McNeil topic to end it lets say that he is a good pick for the flames but he could not be so good because his lack of acceleration. I have just been defending him because I know the guy because his family is friends with my dad, not to mention that I have a bromance with him lololol just kidding. we are all flames fans lets just end it like fans and not keep rabbling on about this for the next 300 years.

What about trying to get Vladamir Namestikov... We need centres, he's russian and deadly. He's smooth skating like to pass. He has been compared to Datsyuk.... Maybe traded down to get him if Schiefiele(sp.) is gone... I don't think McNeill is going to be what we need here in Calgary and that is a number 1 centre.. I think we should pursue Schiefeicele he looks to be deadly, but if not trade down and go for Namestnikov and heres a nice read on the prospects.

he is a great player in the making, but it will take time for him improve his defensive game. He doesn't look as consistent as Schiefiele, or McNeil

if i were to rank the players we should peruse my order sits like this:

1. Schiefiele

2. Namestinkov

3. Arima

4. McNeill

thats my opinion... I think Namestikov is what this team needs to spark a rebuild

McNeil seems to have strength, good hands, good vision but his skating is definitely lacking. Watching his highlight reel he is never really moving very fast. He gets himself into good positions, fights well for the puck, but never goes quickly. He also doesn't appear to have much foot agility either. In close to the net he makes slow circles around the puck before taking the shot.

Scheifele Has good hands, skates better than McNeill, good positioning, slightly smaller but still growing.

I would place them fairly equal in skill, McNeill gets an edge in size, Scheifele has the better skating. In the current NHL I give the edge to Scheifele. I would put Namestikov behind both.

the interesting thing about Namestnikov is he's pretty physical for a russian. By which I mean that he doesn't shy away from tough areas more than hitting. There's also tonnes of room on his frame for muscle. He's regarded as one of the top skaters in the draft too.

seriously?? ever heard of nhl.com??

those last two are for comparing the frames more than anything else.

I can see him becoming another Ryan Getzlaf, a kid they all like you of McNeil thought that he will true into a winger and will not be able to develop more into a great centre. Look at him Now!!!!!!!!!!!! never put down a centre with size, speed, good hands, and intelligence they always become dependable players.

I completely agree. He also fights, is a right handed shot and has a great work ethic and attitude. He was converted to a winger in both the Prospects Game and the Under-18, and although he was good he didn't shine.

He is ranked where he is for another reason: he plays a pro-style game. He doesn't have the quickness of some of the smaller players, but he projects as a power center, and is a much more powerful skater than most.

Still young, but already a leader, and took a crappy team to the playoffs. He also finished the season very strong with 19 points in his last nine games. I think people in this thread are way underestimating his NHL offensive upside.

I like Scheifele too, but his defensive game is nowhere near McNeill's.
