  1. Last night's game was a win (not in regulation, again), but I don't feel that Berra stole it. The Flames blocked 27 shots and kept the chances low %. This was a typical Berra game; make some decent stops, keep it close, and let in a tying goal in the 3rd. I would rather that he became consistent in a game - either he plays good or bad the whole game. That way we could make a decision on him - sign him or let him go. It still seems like we have to play him to see if he is worth re-signing. Of course Ramo being out plays a part of that.
  2. Berra played well, I thought. At times outstanding. I know Hartley is trying to get Berra a win to boost his confidence, but Ortio is as important to the Flames as Berra, maybe moreso. Give Ortio a game now, since Berra is going to the Olympics anyway.
  3. Ortio has been better in his AHL starts than Berra was. Three games before the Olympic break, so we should get Ortio at least once. Since Berra is starting tonight, it would be good to see Ortio against the Islanders. If he plays that game well, then play him against the Flyers. To be honest, I think that Berra was brought up too quickly.
  4. You are certainly reading a lot into my post. It was all about substandard goaltending. Nowhere did I say we make any trade for a better goalie. That may be Burke's plan, though.
  5. What I was saying was that right now (as of today), an extra 7 wins would be a wild card spot. If you look at the number of losses charged to Berra and consider the number of his wins that came down to shootout, then you are at below average goaltending. With a Rask or a Hillier, we are just a bottom seed playoff team.
  6. Until he wins a game in regulation, he won't get much confidence from his teammates or the fans. His record speaks for itself: 24 games - 7 wins - 14 losses - 2 OTL....Every single win is in extra time or shootout. If we played a goalie with reasonable win/loss record (.500) for those 14 losses, we would actually be in a wild card position. Not that I blame all those losses on the goalie, but it makes it seem like we were closer to being a playoff team than a bottom 3 team.
  7. Ramo sidelined with MCL injury; no timeline yet, not placed on IR yet. Ortio called up. I hope he is not subject to waivers if and when he is sent down; 99% sure he isn't. This should give some idea of what the Flames have in him. I hope he shows well, since he appears to be a better option than Berra. If he does, Berra will not be re-signed IMHO.
  8. What's funny is that is one thing I have not heard him talk about since he came to Calgary. He is vocal enough about everything else, or at least has been. Sure his MO may be to build from the net out, but I think he may view Ramo as anoth Reimer; need to see a full year to know if he has the "stuff". Sure, if a younger proven goalie became available on the cheap, he would be all over it.
  9. Makes no sense to look for a goalie right now. There is not going to be any great deals with teams looking to make or stay in the playoff hunt. Sellers will want too much for anyone decent. We are not close enough to being a contender to waste assets at this point in the rebuild. Burke has said there is no scenario he can see trading away our 1st rounder. As far as the existing Flames goalie talent goes, he has two goalies in the NHL that (at least one of them) are improving. He has a possible future NHL'er in Ortio. If none of those options help in the rebuild, then he looks for goalie to become the starter by next season or the following. Sure he likes to build from the net out, but right now defensive struggles and D-zone faceoffs are still a killer.
  10. How would you know what he is capable of if he gets max 2-3 in a row, or after a win he sits? Or after a win he plays game 2 of a B2B? Last few games: Loss to Preds 4-2 SV% .882 on 34 shots Win over Carolina 2-0 SV% on 23 shots Loss to St.Louis 5-0 SV% .827 on 29 shots Win over Avs 4-3 SV% .880 on 25 shots Loss to TB 2-0 SV% .931 on 29 shots Loss to Pitts 4-3 SV% .826 on 24 shots Loss to Det 3-2 SV% .921 on 38 shots In that stretch, he had exactly one loss greater than a 2 goal margin. Say what you want, Ramo presents the best chance to win this season.
  11. If Hartley is big on getting wins, why does he insist on playing Berra over and over? Why doesn't he just send him down to the AHL and call up Joey as a backup. - Only play Joey once every 5 games. - Leave Berra in the AHL until he can battle through his positioning issues. - Call up Ortio for 5 games and send Joey back down. - If Berra figures out the game, bring him back up; if not, sign him to a one-year prove-it contract. End result - you have played Ramo enough games to improve and to see if he is a keeper. Berra plays as many games in the AHL and learns to win. Ortio still plays similar amounts of games but gets to prove himself at the NHL level. Or at least shows where he needs work.
  12. Personal rant..... Berra has lost each of his last 5 games. Must be a good time to play him. Ramo gets a shutout and is rewarded with the 2nd game of a B2B. He needs to sit after the loss. Ramo was not the reason we lost the last game. Rant off //
  13. Maybe Millions interviewed Rob & Charlie and they said Karri Berra was starting. Kare Bear for short. That twitter; one minute he says one the, the next he says something else. Makes sense I guess. Ramo can't get 3 games in a row - the universe would explode.
  14. Looks like Ramo will get the start against the Jets tonight. Unless he posts another sh*tout (superstitious), Berra will probably get the start against VAN and then Ramo against the Sharks.
  15. Yeah, he was just OK. Not that concerned about his performance in a tourney at this stage in his career. I hope he takes this as a signal that he still has some work to do, and goes home to playing his butt off in the NCAA. Let him develop there for another year, sign with the Flames, and take the starting role in Abby for at least a year. BY then we will have a better read on him, and he will be playing against better competition on a TEAM. If he projects to be a top prospect then, his timing will be in line with the Flames becoming a playoff team again. In the meantime, go Ramo, go Berra, go Ortio, and yes, go Roy. One (OR MORE) of the bunch should help us solidify the team in nets. At least that is my hope.
  16. Just to add to the debate.... http://flames.nhl.com/club/blogpost.htm?id=24629

Both Berra and Ramo had adjustment periods where the Flames were playing a more offense-focused game and GA were always above 3.
  18. Should have put the in the post. Of those options I mentioned, the only one that could have a chance of working was the SO one. Un Berra's case, I think he could only be good if he played the majority of the game. Going in cold would probably not work very often.
  19. Maybe Hartley could try Berra for the 1st period, Ramo for the 2nd and 3rd, and put Berra in for any shootouts. Or replace the goaltender as soon as he lets in one because they seem to come in bunches.
  20. I can't put my finger on why this team has such issues clearing the zone. We cycle the puck in the offensive zone really well, and can win a game (almost) on that alone. We seem to get into situations where we spend more than a couple of attempts getting the puck out. We get control, put it up the boards weakly where the opposition is. Or we try a short pass to a forward where it gets turned over. More times than not, this results in a whistle (followed by a faceoff loss), a penalty, a scoring attempt, or a goal. Getting Gio back coincided with the goaltending improving, but the same gaffs are being made. Too many minutes played by some D? Players being winded after a long cycle in the D zone? This happens almost every game, whether winning or losing. Like I said, can't isolate the cause. Hop Hartley can, although he hasn't solved it yet either. Do we need a 3/4 pairing playing 5/6 roles, and thereby sharing the minutes more evenly?
  21. My point was not blaming Berra for the loss. You can't win many games 1-0. Calgary had Boston on the ropes for much of the first two periods. The team sat back and let Boston build momentum. Colborne trying to do a simple flip turned into a penalty. Brodie left way too much of a gap on the go-ahead goal. A lot of small things that mean nothing if the Flames have scored more than one goal. But, Berra absolutely has to make that save to give the team any kind of chance, that late in the game. He has let in similar goals before. The book on him would be to shoot high glove side, between his body and the post. He has to know that, and change that one part of his game at the minimum.
  22. The strange thing about Flames goaltending is that only Ramo and JoeyMac have won two games in a row. Berra gets a win and follows it up with a loss (or 3). Berra played really good against the Oilers, but was helped out by the post on more than one occasion. Against the Bruins, he faced few shots through the first two periods, then managed to give up the go-ahead goal in the usual fashion (between his body and the post). The defense was bad in the third period and it looked like the offense was shut down, but the goalie has to make that one save at least. I don't mind the concept of going with the hot hand, but with Berra, there is only a one game hot hand. He plays good for 2 out of 3 periods, but tends to give up multiple goals in short periods of time.
  23. I think this year's WJC will really shine the light on him.
  24. Looks like Berra gets the start against the Briuns. "Hot" hand wins out over playing Ramo for a stretch. The problem I have with Berra is he will look ok-to-good for a game then get blown out in the next. Ramo played well in his last 3 games, apart from a miscue behind the net.
  25. With both goalies coming off good games (Ramo 3 games 4 GA, Berra 1 game 1 GA) who do you think Hartley will go with? Does he apply his rule about giving a goalie a string of starts (11 of 12 for Berra), or does he go with the "hot" hand (Berra - 1 win).
