Campbell had two seasons; one he was really good, the other he was really bad. He was a backup that never played a ton of games. Even so, he managed a 31-9-6 record. That's nothing to sneer at. Vanecek and 46th traded for 37th and 70th. So, EDM loses out on available young goalies to avoid buying out Kassian. 2 goalies they were high on. They might have space to get into a bidding war with TOR, NJ.

Just don't take a high school player. Take the big guy that was injured and fell down the board. Or the Euro that played in the Finish or Swedish leagues. The guy with lesser numbers but real good. Or the guy with a powerful stride that just lacks the mechanics. Just need to be careful with some of the transfer rules.

They have 10.3 with 7F, 7D (including Klef) and 1G (Smith). I am sure they would like Keith to retire, but that screws CHI. He wouldn't do that to them. He likes playing. So, if you include Smith and Klef on IR, that gives you a cushion of $7M, but not rreal cap. Have to get a real goalie + backup - $6M + $1M Sign Kulak - $4M Sign Yammer - $3M Sign McLeod - 1.25M Sign 4 more F at minimum pay = $3M No Kane and no Pooly Total spent to fill the team = $18.25M Available cap + cushion = 17.3M Over cap by at a million. And that's a worse team than they had last season, other than a good goalie. No better than when Smith played well.

Losing Kassian helped, but not enough. $10M cap remaining with 7F and 1G signed. Skilnner takes less than $1M. But that gets them Smith and Skinner. 3 RFA's needing deals. Not even close to a full roster. Klefbom allows them to go over by 4, but not great.

You could look at it this way: So this allows Kenny to get Kulak signed for about $4M x 4? Good cap management to trade a 2nd in 2022, trade down in 1st round, a 2nd in 2024, a 3rd in 2025 + a 7th in 2024 for Kulak. Is that a strange way to look at it?

Maybe just maybe he doesn't want to play for more than 7. It's not like that 8th year will be paying him 10M. Say we offer 10.8 x 7. Probably the max that a team will pay anyway. Just means year 8 isn't something like 6-7M.

Debrincat traded to Ottawa for 7th OA and 39th OA, plus a 3rd in 2024. I guess you can see what value a good player is.

A few players come to mind. Barzal because they can get him signed to an extension right now, but I don't see that being a huge concern. Dobson is a RFA, but has no real leverage. Bellows maybe. The first two interest me, but at what cost.
