  1. So, Tanguay has left the Remparts. Along with Roy. I might be interested in Love, Tanguay, Savard as the A/coaches. Maybe too much excluding the goalie coach, which I think we need to upgrade. Pehaps we would or should substitute one of the inexperienced ones with a longer running A. Are we still interested in the CBJ coach as an A/coach?
  2. Who does that leave? The guy from CBJ and Greene? Muller is currently an A/coach, so that wouldn't inlcude him. Really, should the GM not allow the new coach to replace anyone he desires?
  3. I guess the difference is that one player is at his peak and hasn't really improved in the last couple years and the other potentially has some improvement yet. I don't think that either is untradeable. If you were to trade Hanifin or Tanev or Ras, then you have to replace a top 4 D. We currently have 5, top 4 D, based on most recent performance. Top 4 on this team that is. I think the problem we have is too many of the same type of D. Weegar is a bit more of a hybrid. Tanev is the give it up for the team player. Ras does block a lot of shots, but doesn;t have the same accumen as Tanev for D-zone. Hanifin is just a high value asset that you can use, whether you disparage his play or love him. The contract situation makes it more important to deal with before the season. A return to top scoring D could set his contract way over value. Whatever the best choice for D pairs, best D-men to keep for their play value and what C's we should run this year, the bottom line is the cap won't let us run back the same team. 10F with 1.2M left. Doesn't include Duehr or Pelletier to have 4 full lines. Sure, we can possibly deal Mange or Coleman or Backlund to gain some space. Might have to do that anyway. D is the only place where we have the full complement of player. Weegar is the only one paid like a top 2.
  4. The only trade that really works using Lindy is a trade for a younger C that hasn't hit his stride yet. That's how we got Lindy in the first place. IF we are trading him now, it's to a team that has a younger C and wants the experience or 2-way type of player. So, if CAR is looking to trade Necas, then they are doing so to take advantage of his value or tired of not getting anywhere due to having less responsible C's. Going for it. Window closing.
  5. SN picks their heroes during the playoffs and cuts them slack for the rest of the series. Tkachuk was the poster boy for scoring big goals, even if he wasn't the only reason FLA won. So, they look at a sequence and think that technically Pietrangelo was going onto the ice serface to join the scrum. Same concept as a guy on the bench going onto the ice after the game and getting in a scrum. No reason for him to stay in the box so it's different. Even up mentality since there were only 4 VGK skaters to 6 FLA ones. I don't have a problem with what he did, since the potential for two guys punching one guy was there. But SN is exactly at fault because they do the same thing in any series. Pick the White Knight. AP was a villian against Draisaitl, who SN proclaimed to be the Byng player he isn't. He's a douchebag like McD is in games. AP got carried away and regretted it, but SN branded him. Because he did something bad to their hero. SN barnded Tkachuk a unicorn becuase of his blend of skill and grit. He has those things plus he is a selfish baby. Bennett has to answer the call for Tkachuk. Some things never change. ANyway, this is almost over. With any luck Vegas wins and we get past this crap. I hate Vegas, but Tkachuk being in FLA kinda ruined it for me. His MO is drag people down to his game so that they don't use skill to win. I put up with it as a Flame but also regretted his play in the playoffs. Had we made it past the 2nd or 3rd round last year, we would be seeing him drag the team down the rabbit hole.
  6. Well they both have been top 4 D. Kylington for a season and Zaddy for a bot longer elsewhere. The bigger question is whether they both can improve their play away from the puck. Kylington is great ay puck moving and hustling back and close pursuit. Zaddy is good at puck moving and getting shots on net. Both of them get beat in front of the net, no different than Hanifin. Hanifin has a better first pass. The advantage Hanifin has is that he can play 22+ minutes. But, I think that Weegar is far better overall on the top pair. Can't say I have seen Hanifin-Weegar, but I think too much overlap. Hanifin-Tanev wasn;t as good last year as Kylington-Tanev. Perhaps that's a bit on Tanev. If you could swap Tanev for a bigger version, younger, then we would be fine. I wouldn't concern myself with Hanifin at all. If Zaddy could be that guy, I would care if never scored another goal. He has the size to clear out the bigger F in front of the net. He just doesn't do it enough or at the right time.
  7. Running out of head coach jobs being vailable. I think the thing is whether he can operate under a head coach in the NHL. If anything is certain, you pay your dues in the Flames org. A/coach gets you the chance to take over at some point. Gives you the NHL experience. Sees what you can do with a team. I'm not the biggest Huska fan, but he is the choice right now. Can he be more than a defensive coach. Can he work with the players like he says he's going to do.
  8. Not paying much attention to the end of the game once they lost. So, is it the usualy douche-baggery we came to expect of him? More than likely. Am I glad he's gone? Secretly yes. I'm not upset about getting two of FLA's best players for him. His BS about BT not wanting to sign him long term. Yeah, okay that why you set up the QO of $9M to make it impossible to deal with. Especially since you are going to ask to be traded, yeah we all know that was his plan.
  9. Not entirely sure what you expect a team to do. Oilers lost a lot of games because they didn't have McLotto. And the GM set them up to fail. Play as hard as they could, they couldn't win enough. We had a team that was close to a playoff spot, even though we had below average goaltending for most of the year. Only way we are losing 10 in a row to end a season is if you play garbage teams with less than your regular roster. I'm not going to blames the coach or players for winning about 5 of 10. That's why they play. We played the players that Sutter would use in a playoff game, so we weren't sitting anyone like the old 4th line. Now, had we decided to use the backup or Wolf 10 games sooner, and played the guys looking fr a full time job next season, we might have had a different fate. Playoffs or better draft pick. Or exactly the same. At least we might have seen more giddyup in games where we looked ready for the glue factory.
  10. It's a weird sequence. Pietrangelo in the box with 17 seconds left. Game over when time ran out. He comes on the ice and gets in a fight. So technically, he was not allowed in fight with enayone. Tkachuk being the idiot he shows at times and fighting with no time left. "Fighting" as in wrestling with someone, since I can't remember the last time he's chucked knuckles.
  11. You should always makes moves that work together.Move Backlund to get a decent D. Use Hanifin to get a decent top 6 player. We don't have pending un-signed players that could get ugly. Whether you believe Kylington can replace Hanifin, we bring in a player that can add by committee.
  12. Unfortunately, #2 and #3 collide. Gaudreau was in the #3 list but turned into #2. Bennett was turned into a bottom 6 player and we got a little for him. We wasted an entire draft and decised to not bother signing them. Poor asset management. Not that they were great players, but losing a young player before they even leave junior is dumb. We make decent draft choices, so when we have picks we do okay. Sutter lead the GM to believe we were closer to contender than not. Our pro scouting is suspect IMHO. Whether the coaching and chosen targets are on the same page, won't know which is the problem. Who decided that Neal and Brouwer were the right players? When we got Huberdeau, how did we determine that he should play on the 2nd line and develop his defensive game, on the RW? We have several impact players on their last year. I'm okay with Lindholm because he will have 5 years that are near top of his game. Longer than that is riskier. Backlund may have 2 years left that is similar. Hanifin hasn't really improved, and his value may be higher in trade. Tanev is a beast but not Gudas beast level. Tanev will normally suffer one moderate to serious injury per season. He's the best defensive D-man we have, but still has issues clearing the front of the net. All of these players have to be considered assets and not "forever Flames".
  13. The format of the AHL playoffs is really stupid. Home ice means you get a choice of first 2 or last 3? They played some of the playoff games B2B.
  14. Didn't sign him? You mean we don't use him in a trade? Perhaps we should have traded Pelletier over him; that's the better question.
  15. Yeah, I'm kinda circling back on that trade. I'm not sure the GM would do it, since he seems keen on re-signing EL. But, if he can't build the team the way it needs to be built, he may just have to trade him. Can't just hope and pray. EDIT - It's not just a draft pick, which is why I am more on board this one. Of course if all the great choices are gone by 16, then the pick might not be worth as much to us.
  16. Not exactly sure how you feel about him. Could you elaborate? LOL I would take Hubey over him for his attitude, and the only thing about him that is a plus is he's a C. And because you don't see quite with Hubey. Anyway, back to draft thoughts. Is Musty your top choice for the player you think will still be there?
  17. That's a lot of moving parts for a draft pick. Sorry to burst your bubble, but Hubey has a full NMC. Lindholm + 5 overall is pretty steep for just moving up 2 spots. Yeah, I know. Any ideas that isn't a complete rebuild?
  18. Sorry about posting it in the wrong thread. My bad. Has 2 open. Duh. Fair assessment. How's about PLD? I don't think you are big on Sheifele these days.
  19. Since this is off-season thread, I noticed that Debrincat wants to be traded. His Qualifying Offer is $9M. The original trade cost the 7th overall and a 2nd and a 3rd in 3rd in 2024. Had a bit of a down season. Has zero trade protection, but would only sign with certain teams. Sounds like Tkachuk. So, if they would do a similar trade value, would it be worth it for a 40 goal scorer more than once. Less of a passer, but adds 10+ PPG per season. Not as long a shelf life as a newly drafted player, but a known quantity. Costly, but in two years the cap will increase by a considerable amount. Might have to include Backlund or Coleman to make the money work this year.
  20. While I respect Friendman's insider stuff, I don't know the valifity of this one. Flames are not known for alerting media of upcoming changes. But to the point, how is it that the coach gets fired again and the A/coach gets the gig? How has that worked here? It hasn't. It's a cheap solution.
  21. So, what is your feeling on Simashev vs Reinbacher, should he drop. Reason I ask is some suggest that Simashev might go and Reinbacher drop. Which would you prefer?
  22. A year before he was the early season MVP. a year after that he was the goat. He's between the two. We don't have to move either to give starts to Wolf. Trading Vladar in the summer is fine if you get a 2nd or better return. But, timing might make better sense to hold off until there is a bigger need elsewhere. Should a LTI situation happen somewhere, he would be a solid trade. If Markstrom gets injured, we have no backup if we have moved Vladar.
  23. I heard the same thing about when. Latest is that Muller is out. Down to the main ones including Love, Huska, Green, and Reirdon. Thought I also heard Tanguay was still in there.
  24. Oh for sure. Kylington was an attractive option if they wanted a young D, but Gio had more trade value as a known quantity and reputational status. The draft cost of protecting Gio by offering a premium to SEA was prohibitive for sure. In an alternative universe where we trade Gio before the expansion, we lose another player, more likely Kylington. It was a calculated move and the cost to protect Gio was a non starter. We had traded Bennett before the draft, so he would have replaced Dube or Backlund or Mangiapane. All of this to come back to the point that the Flames should not worry about UFA's unless they are important ones. Letting Lewis and Lucic go isn't a big deal.
