Yeah, I'm a little torn between the 2 of you. Loose cannon, but a cannon nonetheless. I'm happy to give him an offseason by our watch. Maybe we can find more from him than a protected O-weapon.

It's worth a shot. We're biding time regardless.

If you look at Gaudreau before they worked on his defensive play, you might see a somewhat one-dimensional player.  I know that JG brought other things to the table that Kuz maybe doesn't do, but then again Kuz is able to withstand hits a bit better.

I tend to think that you can find the balance with a player you hold to account, but also provide some belief in his abilities.

  2. As a Mod, I normally created threads barely in advance of a game, if I noticed nobody had created a thread.

RocketDoc was usually early, so I would know those days it was covered.

The sign-up thread was used for some time, but once the Flames started dropping out, it stagnated a bit.

The idea of incentives is great.  Maybe have more than one willing to do a GDT.

I have some trouble doing justice to the thread quality, but that's what I have to work with on my PC.

I’d be really shocked to see the flames go hunting for a big name. They know they arnt close enough and I think they are very contentious about their draft pick status next year.

I think they will go after a well known player in FA, but none of the ones mentioned so far.

Lack of C's in the UFA class would seem to imply that they might target a LD.

I do hope they use Markstrom to bring back a decent forward, maybe a C.

That second period was an absolute circus.

They are the better team and deserve to win. I don’t think there was much to choose between the teams in the previous series, big gap this year

It was an embarrasment to the league.  No goal on the ice, you can't see the puck in his glove but somehow now you can extrapolate that it must be in?  The other calls and non-calls made it pretty obvious that the refs were one sided in their approach.

If VAN or NSH play them next series, it will be a much different looking series.  VAN plays a much better run and gun game than EDM does.  EDM has one player that does it and the other one stands around.  And VAN has potentially 3 goalies that can stop the Douche Bomb TM.  Perhaps they will ditch the homer coverage with Louie for a much more even call like the one the Flames get.  Millen.  Singh is okay, but a bit too excited for my liking.  Not as much choice this year with all the ESPN coverage they are using.

might have been an article before the last game. I know they hated the moves and signings in the offseason.

They praise when winning and trash when losing.

Reaves has his place in the NHL playoffs, but maybe a bit too big a role too early.

The 2nd and later rounds need varieties that you can put out there.

I get what you're saying, but you've got to do better than that. He has history in the league that's more worth than a fifth.

We shouldn't be having to give him away. Losing trades, just because, shouldn't be on the agenda. Some form of decent prospect and a 5th. But just a 5th? That's horrible asset mgmt. Develop players, give them away. It haunts us a bit.

I was thinking Dellandrea, who isn't really getting top 6 duty.

Not my first choicem but better than giving Mange away.

Nope. We shouldn't. 35 in a contract year, everything else a struggle to 20. Go figure. Hate to inflate size, but someone who can handle playing like he does. To be more punisher than punishee.

I do like Mangiapane, he plays an honest hard-working game. His size defies him quite a bit, and he overcomes that as well as he can.

I agree with you, and not just Backlund. Mangiapane gets open in the high slot quite a bit. He rarely gets the puck, though. He floats just above the dmen and gets to that sweetspot area between the fwds and dmen.  He's good at it. He rarely gets the puck though. 20% on a good day, maybe? Unless it's a contract year, apparently.

What I mean is, I don't mind Mangiapane at all. He's just too small for bottom 6. He's not quite skilled enough to be an impact player on Line 2. He probably could, riding with a good pair. Like he does with Backlund and Coleman.

But he needed a better pairing than Kadri-Dube. He's the ride-along.

If I were, say Chicago, and we could do my 4th best prospect and a 4th, we might have a deal.

Mangiapane's a good NHLer, we just don't have the parts to accommodate his secondary role, imho.

When I say similar, I don't mean size and style and salary.  I mean someone who is struggling on another team, perhaps getting 4th lineplay and isn't makeing a tonne of money.  Struggling because the team isn't built for the type of player they are, bigger, good on the rush, etc.  Let's say plays bottom 6 and is paid for that.  On the right team would score 20.  Doesn't spend most of the time on his backside.

That was more than a suggestion!! You manipulated everything with these machines we type on. We have to get rid of these machines. And the whole time you and your lefty-smoking cronies and the mainstream media were feeding us fake news. Players didn't want to leave. You communists forced them out.

Well I'm going to Make Southern Alberta Great Again. MSAGA, mmmkay.🤪

Blame it on AI.  I'm right handed, shoot right and lean right.

You saw the impact of overlaid graphics on the NHL boards.

I think they actually overlaid the scores and game action.

We were watching deep fake (I hate using media terms) hockey, not real players.

How embarrassed would you be to have the handle, "Andrew Mangiapane is the best Breadman"?

Credibility swirling straight down the toilet. lol

We should trade Mangiapane if anyone wants him.

Okay, so we built up his value, supposedly.  I am sure that on the right team he could score 30.

I'm just thinking we aren't that team.

The line he plays on can only score so many goals.

Coleman goes to the net, so those goals are gobbled up.

What Mangiapane used to excel at was quick strike goals.

    Finding a quiet area.

Either the passes aren't coming from Backlund now, or he is not able to find those areas.

Needs a change in scenery, and we should be looking for a similar player.

Someone we don't regret playing 4th line and paying third line for.

We are paying for a top 6 and he hasn't shown that in a couple.

    That's awesome, boss!

I kinda suspected the fix was in and td and rd conspired to have us miss the playoffs.lol

When things got dicey, they brought in medats ho to seal the deal!

It was all a conspiracy. So 2021. The steal is on!!

Can't remember how long ago I had suggested we would end up with 81 points.

A lot of my threads were emergency basis, since it's nice to comment somewhere about the game on.

I can't recall if I did or said anything to the team to have them lose more than half the games I posted.

I can neither confirm nor deny this allegation.

that's only because if we talk about anything other than last decade, the response is "way too soon to make a call"

that's all fine but I remember your reaction to Honzek quite clearly.

Clearly, I don't recall my reaction when we drafted him.  It's not important what my initial reaction was, since I am not an expert when it comes to player drafts.  Would I have preferred a center?  No doubt.  Only 2 players taken after him have played single NHL games each.  In 2021 we got Coronato, while Wyatt Johnson was ranked below him.  I think we would have been happy with him.

It's way to early to do a redraft of 2023.

2020 draft?  Nobody after Zary is really blowing the doors off.

I'm not seeing the big reaches or poor drafting in the 1st round.

The worst case is the Flames pull a Honzek/Jankowski.

And based on recent history, it is also uncomfortably likely.  Flames haven't got the 1st round right since 2016 imho.

You can debate 2017, 2020.   And that's totally fine, not looking for a fight there.

But, the chances of them going completely and wildly off the board, are much higher than we'd like.   Maybe in the 50% range based on recent.

We are all worried about drafting Tij, and that's a debate for sure, but at the end of the day, I'm worried about drafting a guy rated in the 2nd round lol.   We should all just lower our expectations a bit and pray that they do something reasonable with the pick.

When was the last time we drafted an overrated player in the first round?

Last decade, under a GM that made a bunch of miscalculations?

Clutch pearls and you will be okay.

I think most agree that the Caps have zero chance, but the rest is a lot dicier. She's a new season.

The president cup curse seems to be real, but it doesn't always mean a 1st round exit.

    NYR is tough to beat.

I think FLA wins, but both teams have struggles.

    CAR is tough to beat.

BOS seems to always have Leaf's number.

Did Toronto add anyone that can stop a forward?

So, they're moving to Utah and then expanding back into Arizona or Phoenix?

why not move the team back? I guess they need to settle the players in. Not fair to them.

I find it weird the Winnipeg team is called the Jets when we all know they're the Arizona team.

ARI sells team to Utah, avoiding the franchise fees.

ARI gets an expansion team, paying roughly the same amount they got in the sale.

NHL team get their cut of the entry fee ($1B)

It's a weird twist.  ARI had to sell the team because the NHL would not allow them to play at Mullet.

Even if they win the rights to buy the land, they still have 3 years or less to build a stadium.

So, the NHL allowed the sale to a team that would probably have gotten an expansion team in 3 years.

The franchise fee is paid about the same times as expected.

The Jets is a really poor example of the NHL decision making.

Or perhaps the peril of being a small market team.

    Lose a team.

Expansion team fails, team sold and moves to WPG.

    Beat me too it. lol

Are they going to use Utah, or Salt Lake? I hear people coming up with lame names under both. Reminds me of Utah Jazz. If you could name one state that is far removed from jazz, I'm sure it would be Utah. A close second would be the 15+ banjo and twangy singing states. I don't know where jazz would be today if not for that breeding ground of free-form melodies and harmonies known as Utah.

    So maybe the Utah Welcome?

But if it's run the same as ARI, just call them the Utah Yard Sale.

    Speaking of lame names...

The team took the name because the team was relocated from NO.

They seem to get left overs from the league.

So, maybe they should be the Utah Coyotes.

That won't work because Arizona is getting a new team when they expand again.

How about Utah keeps the Yotes last name and when Phoenix gets a team they call it the Arizona Snow Birds.

Utah Jizz comes to mind. Or how about Utah Coyote Ugly. 😝

I would love to see Tij become a flame, build a new arena and have another Iginla mark our territory.

You want Tij to piss on the new stadium?

  17. I would say the safe picks are DAL, COL, VAN.  EDM is going into the playoffs with (another) rookie coach.  I think this year's Kings have a better goalie tandem than the last two versions of them.   If they can frustrate the Oilers top line, it comes down to how well EDM can defend.  Skinner's SA% dropped but his GAA also dropped.  Less goals scored but more goals on less shots.  Hmm.  In previous playoffs, LA has lost a pivotal game on one or two plays.

    With that:

    DAL in 5

    COL in 6

    VAN in 5

    LA in 6

Catton is better than Tij IMO. Catton is also more likely to play C in the NHL. I don’t see Tij playing C in the NHL.

I never suggested that Tij was better and I would be a little miffed if we drafted him.

Can't say I know who we should pick, but Tij is not my first suggestion.

I don't want the sentimental fave, I want the best player.

then we don't have enough depth in the A. If he's doing Bennett things then he's not NHL. Bennett needed the A to get his timing right. We probably play Coronato for a few years then trade him like Benny.

theyre sending a few to the A for a playoff run. He'll have guys to play with then.

    Bennett was a natural C.

Bennett was too young to play in the AHL, so it was NHL or back to junior.

His shot was hampered by shoulder recivery.

Janko was a better 2 way C, so he never gained the spot here.

I think it's too narrow view to say Bennett would have developed in the AHL better.

He would have needed to stay one more year in junior.

Then he may have played in the A for a year.

That year the Heat was full of the failed picks from the Feaster era.

Not sure what he learns there.

This year, they did the right things with Coronato by more AHL than NHL.

    That was this year.

He should get to have some fun in the AHL playoffs.

May not be a long run, since they really has problems late season.

On an unrelated note, the Golden Nights and Kings are playing a , ' You take  Edm, no YOU take EDM'  VGS lost and LA is trailing by one with under 4 mins.

    Crazy finish.

LA had a 3-1 lead starting the 3rd.

CHI gets three goals to go ahead in the first 7 minutes of the 3rd.

It gets down to 1:46 and CHI ices it, so LA gets to pull the goalie.

On the faceoff, CHI wins the draw and has an easy out.

Kurashev flips it forehand to the boards, but there was no pressure.

    It sails over the glass,

LA keeps goalie out, goes 6-4 and scores with 1:21 left.

On the OT faceoff Kempe takes the puck in and scores OT winner within 9 seconds.

Up to the last 2 minutes, EDM was playing Vegas.

This is the type of player Calgary is missing and desperately needs. Someone who can gain the zone with ease and push defenders back. Hopefully he is there at 9.

He's ranked within our number, is he not?

If we were to pick him and Iggy Jr goes next, would that PO the fans too much?

I'm really hoping we don't have to make the choice because Tij is gone or we win the lotto.

SEA would do well to go after Tij.

Right now, they are a bunch of nobodies and the name would light up the town.
