I'd be a bit weary of the price. I tried to focus in on Necas a lot in the playoffs and while I do like him I don't think he is a core piece and i'd be really interested to see what type of contract he's looking for. Arb rights and 2 years away from UFA, he isn't going to be cheap.

At the right price sure but i have a feel he's going to be more expensive then he is worth.

The QO is $3.5M and I get that he is eligible for arbitration.

What would you consider too expensive?

    Slightly more than Mangiapane?

    Or $7M+ ?

Friedman speculating that Carolina will most likely be looking to trade Necas rights this summer. Necas is exactly the type of player I would target if I am Conroy. He brings speed and skill, can play C and RW. He is still young enough to be part of the rebuild plan. I think he would also be a player who could help Huberdeau.

Necas for Markstrom plus something would be a big win for us.

Credit to Vancouver they played really well in the final 40.

This has been an amazing series. I think this is the type of hockey we thought we were gonna see in 2022.

Well that series was a mess from game 1 onwards.  Not sure what the plan was.  Let McD wind up speed?  Let Drai loaf around and not check him?  Take penalties?

I thought that VAN played all but the first period well.  They were able to keep the Oiler PP off the board at least.  They were playing with fire all night.  5 PP's.  The one on Petey was stupid.  Janmark skated into him, and he just stood his ground.  Charging while standing still?  Wasn't a pick because he didn't move to get in the guy's way.  IMHO.

EDM will likely go back to Skinner.  Pickard didn't lose them the game.  But Skinner is their guy in the organization.

Dallas has to make the finals, then it's an added 3rd rd pick in 2026, not an upgraded pick. No SCF, no pick transferred.

The real reason Conny wants Tanev to win a cup. lol

Also why it sucked for us that Dallas and Vegas met in the 1st rd, as Vegas needed to win 1 rd to upgrade this year's 3rd rder to next year's 2nd rder.

Well, that came down to game 82 didn't it.

Oh well, the loss of the 2025 2nd means we get a better 2024 3rd.

Not sure of the order for their picks this year.

The unknown 2nd would have been nice, though.

At worst, still better than a 3rd.

    https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/four-mitch-marner-trades-the-maple-leafs-could-consider/

Calgary Flames get: RW Mitch Marner, C Fraser Minten, LW Nick Robertson, D Timothy Liljegren

Toronto Maple Leafs get: G Jacob Markstrom*, D Rasmus Andersson

*Flames retain 25 per cent of Markstrom’s remaining salary

Okay, so from a Flames perspective, we get a RW a lesser D and a LW that has name recognition.  He had a decent NHL season.  And a prospect.  What it really does is open up a RD spot.  Right now we have three top 4 RHS RD.  And we lose the goalie we are thinking it's the right time to trade.  Marner is only uselfull if we re-sign him or trade him, since we aren't contending anytime soon.  His age makes him okay to re-sign but we can't pay him that kind of money long term.  We would need to not continue his NTC if we got him and trade him for a HUGE haul at TDL.  We make that known to teams before the season starts.  Quietly.

The trade that never will happen.  Interesting, and probably gives TO a goalie that makes no difference.  Maybe Ras replaces Gio.  Maybe makes them a little better but not much.

I hear you.   But, player safety, any kind of safety really, is different than the typical blame game.

And it has to be different, because safety matters and the blame game has never affected change.

If it came from Shanny, and it might have, I'm cool to point the finger at him.

But, anyone who actually listened to him is equally responsible.   Treliving, the coach.  The doctors if they agreed to it (but I don't think they did).

In all scenarios, BT and the coach get the finger point.   Should Shanny be included?  probably.

More heads need to roll in the office if we really want to reduce heads rolling on the ice.

Gosh, who would ever listen to their boss when they know he is wrong?

You can blame the GM for decisions that he has complete control over.

A new GM has a smaller circle.

Considering what he was left with by Dubas, I think he had a very small circle.

BT was probably thinking that TO had less interference by the owners than CGY.

Was probably initially cool with the Pres having input instead.

That lasted until the draft was over.

I doubt he had any ability to trade the core 4 if he thought it would benefit the team the most.

I don't have any real insight, just how things appeared to shake out there over the years.

Yes but it also feels like the cliff is at 8.

    Catton

    Eiserman

    Helenius

    Parekh

    Yakemchuk

    Jiricek

    Etc

    Who to take?

Catton has #1 Center potential but he's also too small/weak.  Also LHS C/LW... Flames will have another chance at that the next 2 drafts.

Eiserman LHS LW.  One dimensional sniper.  Please no.  Not an organizational need when there are bigger problems on D and C.

Helenius I would be happy with.  RHS C... Feels like a younger Lindholm.  #1 C potential.  We need RHS C.

Parekh... High risk high reward... I think worth a gamble.

Yakemchuk... Also high risk high reward.  RHS RD.  I would go Yakemchuk before Parekh.

Jiricek RHS RD... Wouldn't be opposed but he seems to lack offense.  Also coming off injury.

Catton seems like what we would go for, but I doubt the order you listed is even close to what gets picked.  Yes, they will be all gone by our VAN pick, but that's all I can even be 90% cerian on.

Teams' scouts see the world differently and have many things to weigh.

Not as simplistic as consensus rankings.

Anyway, we can just wait until the pick to trash the fact we get a LHS LW at 9.  LOL.

This and the next 2 drafts will help decide our future.

We have some good D in the system, but I am a little concerned about the F's.

In real time, I thought McDavid dove on that scrum but he got the worse of it.  $5k fine is a joke though.  Should have been 1 game for Zadorov and then McDavid and Soucy should get $5k fine each for slashing at the end of regulation.

They don't show the hit that he put on the VAN player just before.

The hot was a typical crosscheck, but it looks brutal.

That messed up Monahan way back when.

They aren't suspending crosschecks much, so only Bettman would change that.

All in all, I thought EDM brought on a lot of what they got.

You start acting tough, then you should expect being hit.

Zaddy almost cost them the game at least once.

His number is in the minds of the refs, so he won't get any free passes.

Anyway, the game was fun to watch.

    Skinner is bad.

I been trying to lay low.  but, I can't.  I feel compelled to say this.

Both Matthews and Nylander were put in all the final regular season games so that they could appease fans and chase regular-season accolades, despite both of them having put in a lot of high risk minutes and in need of a couple nights off.

    Weird, but...okay.

Then they both get sick early in playoffs, and/or show concussion-like symptoms.  not a shock.

Both are played anyway, and are totally ineffective.   Right.  Of course.

Then Matthews takes a hit, and For Sure has a concussion, or "head injury signs" as Treliving put it. Because that's the kind of direct, honest straight shooter he is.

Yeah played him Anyway, despite the doctors leaking rumours that it would be incredibly dangerous to.   And he was totally ineffective.  right.

Putting all the owner and coach and arena and "axe to burn" stuff aside, and putting aside all the hierarchical roles and "process" and the rest of that junk, and roles and responsibilities and how the GM is never really at fault,

BT let this happen under his watch, and... No, it's for sure Not why he fired the coach.  Very likely the opposite actually.  It's...Total, and it is Total, Complete BS to be happening in 2024.

He should not be a GM.   He should not be in hockey.   He is terrible, JUST for this, let alone all the other stuff he deflects.   This is the ultimate in prioritising short term benefit.  It's thinking short term ahead of the brain health of your best players.

No excuses for it.  Don't care if the owners told him to do it, don't care if it was the coach's decision, don't care if the players lied about it, don't care if the doctors lied about it.   I seen it in Calgary, I seen it in Toronto with same GM, he should be gone.  Period.

A GM in 2024 who circumvents or allows others to circumvent player safety should not be a GM.

Glad it's not our problem here.   Toronto will be Extremely lucky if this doesn't become a larger issue.   >50% chance that one or both of them does not ever play the same again.

Point to the guy that has spanned all of TO's losses in the playoffs against BOS; Shanny.

The GM had zero say as to who played those final games.

The coach had to appease the players.

A new GM isn't going to have much input.

Shanny would call in Keefe and BT separate to tell them what is what.

Just like Burke initially told BT who to get, Shanny told BT.

This little circle is your area of influence.

We pay you to tow the line.

The fans said what they want to see.

Shanny took that and his wide knowledge of hockey and decided what to keep.

    Drieger deserved a better fate.

shutouts in his first 2 nhl games,   fantastic in Florida, can't entirely be blamed for a little struggle in Seattle.

Wolf looked good.  He didn't make the big jump I keep hoping I will be he looked steady.  Promising, but not annointable yet.

    Coronato is a playmaker now?

Klapka looks like he's making the team next year.

Well, I don't know.  CV was probably a mostly NHL has been team that seemed to score.

It's not 100% an AHL goalie going to the NHL being a struggle issue for Wolf.

He got out of rythym not playing for too long and being a backup in the NHL...

To being the guy in the AHL playoffs.  Not enough runway to get up to speed.

He's going to need to be a 1b goalie in the AHl to really have much success.

Sure, the backup route can get you there, but might take longer.

You have to learn the NHL shots and not sit there watching.

He got scored on in the NHL by playing AHL goalie.

    Lose the net.

Play too deep against players that can hit a 3 inch square in the top corner.

    That is experience.

You beat me to it, I was all ready to dust off the Treliving thread  😅   you know my thoughts.

Flames have made improvements in at least scouting.  Have they made improvements in coaching?    Some opportunities available with all the scapegoat firings?

I think all the movement could possibly free up some actually good coaches (not sure about Keefe though, like you said).   For us right now, I think the most valuable coaches are ones that can develop youth.   And those ones are also the ones who sometimes get blamed for organisational failures.   But I can't put my finger on one that I like, all the same.       Other than in goaltending, where I think we should bring in Russian goalie coaches.

I think this thread is about other teams and coaches, since we have lots of discussion about the Flames elsewhere.  I don't think Huska is that good a coach, but I don't think it so much matter yet.  That's all about that.

I think Keefe should have been relieved of duty well before this year's exit.  DJ Smith was (at least in my mind) a better coach, but he didn't last.  Lots of the firings just seem to be a signal to the fans that the GM isn't happy with the outcome and the coach is the first to go.

As I said above if you want to levy critique on Treliving is that IMO he bet on the wrong players. I personally would argue that's hindsight bias but I could see that discussion, that he did too much to build around Gaudreau Monahan, Tkachuk. The "he's a short term thinker" is IMO  product of the circumstances.

Whether it was the pro scouts or the players brought in over time that just didn't quite fit, the results were a lot of wasted picks for what Connie had left to use.  The Gustophson, Forbort, Jatnkrok, etc trades were the ones that bothered me, since we just took on TDL players for the playoffs.  Jarnkrok should have been a better fit, but perhaps the wrong players on a line with him.  A lot of picks for a 12 playoff games.

What is funny that the pro scouts looked at Sharky and saw something there.  Or the right time to call up Pospisil and Zary.  I'm not exactly sure how the D that we got from DAL and SJS will work out, but only the Dallas trade is a costly one.  I liked so far what I have seen, but who knows.

  13. 8 minutes ago, The_People1 said:

Obviously I hope they are a lottery team by 2026... But they still got enough star power to be a playoff team for two more years.  Eichel, Theodore, and decent goaltending... But looks doubtful they will be legit Cup contenders going forward.  Team is getting seriously old.

I think there is a slightly better chance of the 1st in 2026 being better than say 2025.

They have some really good G's.

Gonna lose a few players this summer.

I’d do it all day long, and the Leafs might as well.

well, as far as getting a really good player goes, it would be a good trade.

The questionable part for me is the $10+M salary and sending 6.

He just rurned 27, so a young 27 (if there was one).

A different spin would be Mangiapane for Marner as them dumping cap.

We def want Van to beat Ed so the NJ 4th upgrades to Van's 3rd this year. Vegas' 2nd would be a better pick. Dallas pick would be a 2026 3rd. We currently have our and Van's 2026 3rd.

The Dallas pick is a very very hard road to get it.

The upgraded VGK one jumps a year but only needs one more win.

The VAN pick is at best a 50/50 shot right now; EDM hasn't really faced a true tough team.

LA can be tough to play, but never really showed it this playoffs.

Yeah, I'm a little torn between the 2 of you. Loose cannon, but a cannon nonetheless. I'm happy to give him an offseason by our watch. Maybe we can find more from him than a protected O-weapon.

It's worth a shot. We're biding time regardless.

If you look at Gaudreau before they worked on his defensive play, you might see a somewhat one-dimensional player.  I know that JG brought other things to the table that Kuz maybe doesn't do, but then again Kuz is able to withstand hits a bit better.

I tend to think that you can find the balance with a player you hold to account, but also provide some belief in his abilities.

  17. As a Mod, I normally created threads barely in advance of a game, if I noticed nobody had created a thread.

RocketDoc was usually early, so I would know those days it was covered.

The sign-up thread was used for some time, but once the Flames started dropping out, it stagnated a bit.

The idea of incentives is great.  Maybe have more than one willing to do a GDT.

I have some trouble doing justice to the thread quality, but that's what I have to work with on my PC.

I think they will go after a well known player in FA, but none of the ones mentioned so far.

Lack of C's in the UFA class would seem to imply that they might target a LD.

I do hope they use Markstrom to bring back a decent forward, maybe a C.

That second period was an absolute circus.

They are the better team and deserve to win. I don’t think there was much to choose between the teams in the previous series, big gap this year

It was an embarrasment to the league.  No goal on the ice, you can't see the puck in his glove but somehow now you can extrapolate that it must be in?  The other calls and non-calls made it pretty obvious that the refs were one sided in their approach.

If VAN or NSH play them next series, it will be a much different looking series.  VAN plays a much better run and gun game than EDM does.  EDM has one player that does it and the other one stands around.  And VAN has potentially 3 goalies that can stop the Douche Bomb TM.  Perhaps they will ditch the homer coverage with Louie for a much more even call like the one the Flames get.  Millen.  Singh is okay, but a bit too excited for my liking.  Not as much choice this year with all the ESPN coverage they are using.

I get what you're saying, but you've got to do better than that. He has history in the league that's more worth than a fifth.

We shouldn't be having to give him away. Losing trades, just because, shouldn't be on the agenda. Some form of decent prospect and a 5th. But just a 5th? That's horrible asset mgmt. Develop players, give them away. It haunts us a bit.

I was thinking Dellandrea, who isn't really getting top 6 duty.

Not my first choicem but better than giving Mange away.

  22. On 4/24/2024 at 2:44 PM, conundrumed said:

Nope. We shouldn't. 35 in a contract year, everything else a struggle to 20. Go figure. Hate to inflate size, but someone who can handle playing like he does. To be more punisher than punishee.

I do like Mangiapane, he plays an honest hard-working game. His size defies him quite a bit, and he overcomes that as well as he can.

I agree with you, and not just Backlund. Mangiapane gets open in the high slot quite a bit. He rarely gets the puck, though. He floats just above the dmen and gets to that sweetspot area between the fwds and dmen.  He's good at it. He rarely gets the puck though. 20% on a good day, maybe? Unless it's a contract year, apparently.

What I mean is, I don't mind Mangiapane at all. He's just too small for bottom 6. He's not quite skilled enough to be an impact player on Line 2. He probably could, riding with a good pair. Like he does with Backlund and Coleman.

But he needed a better pairing than Kadri-Dube. He's the ride-along.

If I were, say Chicago, and we could do my 4th best prospect and a 4th, we might have a deal.

Mangiapane's a good NHLer, we just don't have the parts to accommodate his secondary role, imho.

When I say similar, I don't mean size and style and salary.  I mean someone who is struggling on another team, perhaps getting 4th lineplay and isn't makeing a tonne of money.  Struggling because the team isn't built for the type of player they are, bigger, good on the rush, etc.  Let's say plays bottom 6 and is paid for that.  On the right team would score 20.  Doesn't spend most of the time on his backside.
