  1. I want Jankowski to make the NHL but I also want him to play in the AHL to create further development for other players. Someone Playing with better players makes them better. Poirier and Shinkurak would get top minutes with Jankowsku and I think it helps all three. Then the subsequent lines slot where they should be and development happens at the proper pace.

When our team gets fuller, it could get better in the A. Hoping that happens.

  2. & yet we expect Monahan & Gaudreau to be worth 6.5-7.5 x 8 after the same amount of time.

Other than than lucking into the playoffs last season the Flames haven't done that much better with those 2 on the team. We hope they'll earn those contracts but to date they really haven't proven it any more than the Oiler Golden Boys.

That's the Devil's Advocate approach but our 2 (3 if you count Bennett) really haven't proven themselves more than Hall, RNH & Eberle. The #s tossed round on here might prove to be as premature as KLowe jumping the gun for fear they play out their 2nd contracts & leave.

Funny! I just mentioned that in another thread.

Travel, I hate when we reference the fact we were "only" 10 points out. It doesn't comment on the actual look of the team the eye reference of what this team looked like the whole year. This is where stats do not fly. So we were 10 points out? but we also faced easier goalies and teams that didn't give their all because we ended up winning a few extra games.

10 points is flattering a disaster of a season.

Stats only say so much and they don't tell the whole story.

  3. I believe we will improve, I just don't like to predict playoffs and high success. I am liking the additions and interested in what else gets done. I think we will be close, but i want to wait and see.

Last summer we had guys expecting playoffs and contending for the Cup. We need to temper expectations.

Or we begin to sound like John Garrett...

    And other Canucks fans.

  4. So we have a Goalie now. But last year we were still only two spots ahead of the Oilers in the league. McDavid will be a year older and if he stays healthy helps them win at least ten more games or more.

We have to wait and see how it all pans out once TC starts.

  5. We also have to contend with other teams improving too. Edmonton and Arizona should be better. Maybe the Canucks add enough to their pot to sniff a little playoff push but miss. Winnipeg will be better. The Wildcard will be harder to obtain.

But because there is so much more parity, the playoff bubble # maybe a bit lower or similar to this last year. With all teams trading wins, it'll be just as hard to make it, but I expect tighter deeper races until the deadline.

  6. I'd tend to believe we are definitely good enough with the addition of Tkachuk, who I expect to make this team, especially if we add a top 6 winger, to make the playoffs. I get a new coach needs time to gel with his players but if Elliott can come in and give us average goaltending we will be fine. Losing Brodie last season early and Hamilton taking time figuring out his game really hurt and this season we will have Jokipakka for the full year which will help a lot. This points to an improved defence core in front of a proven goalie with a new possession-style team game. All signs point to a really good season IMO.

I am still not ready to predict a playoff and think we should be a bit skeptical that it's going to happen. The team has a lot to improve on and only showed limited glimpses of it the past few years. They have to play consistently for it to happen. Goaltending helps, but it only helps so much if the team still gives up so many scoring chances and puck time (possession). This team has a long way to go and the goaltending is the start.

Our young players are going to improve for sure, but is it enough? I am going to wait and see before I make predictions.

  7. The pre-draft comments are just that. He didn't know he was getting Elliott. With Bishop, you can roll with Ortio as the backup, but with Elliott, you need someone that may need a bigger workload.

Forget about the cap space created; it was a fluke. Any vet brought in will have to be on a reasonable contract, not a big overpay at FA.

I think it depends because after next season they have to upgrade or re-sign Elliott at a higher cap hit. I guess there will be a few salaries off the book next year.

  8. Has Elliotte played less games due to not being able to handle it, or has it been due perception? Or is it all part of it?

Yes there is. We need 1 of the best backups available.

He usually starts less than 50 % of the games so we might need a 1A/1B situation where the other 1/2 is proven as well (that means Ortio doesn't fit the bill).

But his cap hit allows us to sign/trade for a former starter to carry the rest of the load. His heaviest load was 48 games & his #s dropped.

If you have a starter capable of 50ish or more games without burning out all you need is a trustworthy backup. But when the backup plays 1/2 the games the starter is that in name only.

This might be the spot we tell Reimer that #1 is his if he earns it but we won't pay him more than the 2.5 x 1 to keep the ice equal. The 1 that does best gets a bigger contract as undisputed #1 & the other might/might not be re-signed.

I see Elliotte as having something to prove and he always has had to. Maybe he can handle a starter's load?

He is one of the hardest working guys in the biz, you'd think he would have the cardio for it, but would he have the mentality to?

  9. Everyone always tosses the big known names around first such as Bishop, Fleury, Elliott all with their own set of circumstances. I would go for the gusto on Vasilevskiy and if unavailable strike a deal with Reimer. I like a guy that feels he has a lot to prove and wants the opportunity.

My bet is, if Tampa signs Stamkos, Bishop needs to go. If they don't, they may shop Vasilevsky. I want the younger goalie because he will develop with the team and possibly price his way to a bigger contract longer term instead of a big one straight away. His numbers may incline slower.

  10. Anything more than $2.5mill for Reimer is too much. I see Reimer as nothing more than a 1b and if we are counting on him to carry the load than the playoffs are a long shot.

I will start off saying I don't think Ramo was worth as much as he got, but who do you think is better or would you say they're equal?

I see Reimer as an upgrade to Ramo even if minimal and we gave Ramo close to 4 didn't we?

I thought Ramo would've gotten 2.5-3 on his last but I think he got 3.9.

  11. All reports indicate Treliving was in on Andreson but the division premium prevented it and I believe it was Conroy on the radio a week or so ago that said they actually thought they had a deal for Jones but it fell apart at the last minute. Rumors had them in on Talbot.

I will give you he is slower and very meticulous. Too meticulous? remains to be seen but so far i don't think its cost them. I don't think they've missed on a deal yet and I think they have potetnial to get an even better deal this offseason. More of a buyers market so let's see.

GMs have access to player contracts like us and perhaps even more of an inside scoop. Knowing that Treliving only signed goalies for us through to this year. So long term forecast may have shown better opportunities this year as well.

Also, the fact we were in on Jones and other goalies shows he is trying but not willing to give up more than he has to. I think it is smart in the long term. The only goalie I wanted from last year would've been Jones and SJS weren't trading within the division. Giving up a 1st two years in a row would be a killer on our future. I wasn't happy about it last year, but majority believe Hamilton to be the better choice... So I defer to that line of thought.

    http://www.tsn.ca/salary-cap-for-next-season-set-at-73m-1.512575

The salary cap is set at 73M so we have an idea of what Treliving has to work with.

  12. Ok so our #6 isn't in play for a goalie. Was our goaltending that bad or did we just have a bad defensive system that led us to the worse GAA in the league.

That being said how do we get a bonified #1 goalie without mortgaging the future. Or do we find a #2 goalie and hope for the best.

What teams are looking to dump a goalie if there is an expansion draft.

I am on the side that our D was that bad, but I don't have a lot of other fellow Flames fan posters in my corner. They tend to think a good enough and better goalie get us "5 wins" and we are in the playoffs.

My belief is that we can't judge those ten points because if circumstances were different, some of those points would be harder to come by.

But on the goalie and play front, I think a combination of improved D and goaltending will get us there. I think even Reimer ups our chances and has been a tad better than Ortio and Ramo. Someone better than Reims would still be preferred.

I like the idea of a stopgap until we contend for the cup. Salary structures could be better then, but maybe not.

  13. Skill level yes, but his cap hit and future contract would destry the Flames cap and I don't belive they can make it worth witht he contracts they have and will need to do in the near future.

I get what you're saying, I am just saying on paper he is worth it and more. I don't want him for your same reasons.

It's the same with Subban, too high of a cap hit. I wish the league would go top salary and if you win the cup get bonuses for the star players. I think over 8m is too high for cap reasons.

  14. If Carey Price wasn't injured, he would probably be worth the #6. Being (probably) the best goalie in the world. But that injury scares me.

I agree no one is worth that much now.

Everyone who would be is not in an age range I am willing to trade for.

  15. Ortio didn't do well enough this season to warrant getting a lot more games. Win one, lose one is not a recipe for success. A lot of the wins came at the end of the season against non-playoff teams in semi-tank mode. There were a few really good games against the Pengies and Nashville, while the rest were against the Pacific losers and Winnipeg.

Maybe. Elliott has received the short end of the stick in STL. He should be playing more than 43 games. They are trending towards giving Allen more starts, while Elliott put up superior numbers.

Although, Ortio gave the team a chance to win. The wins stats aren't there, but i would take most of Ortio's losses over most of Hiller's wins and games last year. Winning 6-5 maybe a win, but Hiller won in spite of his performances.

But then, with Ortio, it's the same argument you can use when we mention Colborne. Ortio got a lot of his games when it didn't matter.
