BUF fired their entire coaching staff yesterday.  Kevyn Adams also was quiet last summer.

So would this year be different?  Are they tired of missing the playoffs for 13 straight years?  Would BUF be motivated to move their 11th pick for immediate help like Rasmus Andersson?

They have a lot of good young D, could be a good forward and goalie they need.

    I don’t think the Flames are getting a 1st

    for Markstrom.

Even the NJ deal, likely didn’t include a first and IMO that’s why it was nixed.

I think we all need to prepare for the return to be a 2nd. I would be ok with a 2nd and Turcotte from LA. Bet on a youngster needing a change of scenery, also likely heading for waiver eligibility which could make him expendable.

They are IF Calgary retains to make it work for a team that really needs him.

Unweighted draft lottery.  Sucks DET is a bad team but is going to get penalized with the 15/16th pick because they didn't trade away everyone with a pulse at the TDL.  DET tried to win to the very end.  Literally the team that misses the playoffs barely gets the worst ending of the season.

Anyways, DET future is looking bright.  So many young prospects ready to enter their primes.  Next year should be the year to make the playoffs.

I don't think they're being punished. I actually think teams are punished by having to drop selections when other teams win the lotto. The bottom ones are ones that need the help. Detroit, to me, is on the up and they've had their chance at those top5 picks...

  3. Met mine on Bumble! 🤣 I got lucky...

I do wonder about the draft lotto if it's fixed? I mean, Chicago, Dallas, Toronto, Edmonton... I think the Rangers even won it... Jersey. I dunno. Tough call.

i still think they should just throw 16 loser balls in for the sharks, then 15 for the Hawks, then 14 to the next...

They can keep pulling balls, then if repeat balls come out, it goes to the order of the next round? It would be a true lottery...

you get two sharks in a row, they get the spot in round one and two. And keep going... once a team is out of balls it diverts to their standing in subsequent rounds...

no weighted balls. No weird math equations... the Lotto would then span nearly all seven rounds if the balls come out in differing orders. Just for the teams that don't make the playoffs.

    Trevor Connelly is really skilled.

    There are some off-ice concerns

    https://thehockeynews.com/news/nhl-scouts-face-dilemma-with-2024-draft-prospect-trevor-connelly

The Flames are coming off of bad situations with Ronni and Dube. If I was ownership, I would be telling my hockey-ops, they better do their due diligence. It’s possible that Connelly made a mistake, as kids do. Not sure if I would take him though. I’d want the player to be squeaky clean, if I were ownership.

tough call, it looks like he's done a lot to try and do better, which I find admirable.

how many of us grew up saying,"that's so ---?" Or used the "N" word. We do learn from those if we are able to understand that sometimes these things hurt. So, I'd do a whole bunch of research on whether he's done what it takes to make up for it. So far from that article it feels like he's moving in the right direction...

What do you grow? I'm into it too. Most relaxing thing ever.

Alberta gardening can be tough. We're zone 8ish here and it's pretty forgiving even at that. I've begun slowly hardening off now. Gotta get these trays out of here. I should really build a greenhouse because I do everything from seed from last year's. She's all heirloom now. Be it flowers or veg.

I saw an IG reel where a gardener wore a piece on their leg that looks like a brace, but when bending over in the garden, you can use it to sit on it.

Never heard of him. "Mestis" is Finland's version of the AHL. They were developing him there at 19. Seems crazy.

Why not u20 sarja? His dev looks weird to me, but I'm not really familiar with their processes. He was U20 at 17-18. Then Finland's 2nd best league at 18-19 for 35 starts?

What am I missing? Why was he pushed so fast? Yet no internationals.

We need to launch a full investigation. lol

Somebody championed this signing. I can't make much sense of his profile, I'm sure you all checked, but regardless (irregardless for some lol):

    https://www.eliteprospects.com/player/279019/waltteri-ignatjew

My only guess is that our Goalie scouts seem to like him? We've done decently with scouting international goalies lately. I wouldn't say Big Save Dave is a grand slam, but it was a pretty good hit. And the LA insider says he's quite impressed with his play this year. So, maybe it's not about numbers so much as it is about mechanics? The LA guy talked about how good Rittich's mechanics can be, and that when he plays within them he can play well. He also mentioned that when shooters wind up he used to kind of start further away and start to kind of back into his net to give a split second longer to react, and that he has gotten back to that... I heard this guy speak about 2-3 weeks ago on Flames Talk with Pat......

I do think they've done a bit better, so we will see.

Only slightly. My bigger concern would be why are we targeting someone in a elite draft area who has not had elite production really at any level.

Not saying he is not a good prospect, he is but I think his size has inflated his draft stock.

Which player do you mean? Honzek?

  8. Just playing along with suggestions, I don't think Flames want him out, and maybe happy with him and Weegar to mentor and be the beacon of attitude growth in CalgaryZ so gotta weigh that into it.

only a year ago we heard players want to leave but then here we are shipping everyone out and then pissing on them because they don't want to be in Calgary... I get it's fanaticism, but then we gotta expect a loyalty spectrum, if we can't be loyal, how can we expect them to?

I get this is a problem I have. I want a really good team and while the flames have had good seasons, I wanted more... so it's a catch for me

Sounds like an NHL insider doing some fiction.  I also don't think Kadri has high trade value.  Unlikely to get that top 10 pick from BUF.

I was thinking more that Andersson is the value, and Flames would have to add and probably retain on some salary? Maybe not, but thinking maybe it's Mangiapane added with retained, and hope they think the adds push them up.

  10. 1 minute ago, conundrumed said:

He's the one that BT said, "would have punched me" if he didn't take Mangiapane. lol

I'll give him Andersson too, but nobody's afraid of getting punched by him. lol

I wonder, I know you've said on a few occasions, the Flames tend toward the WHL? Maybe... or maybe it's more the W over the Knights, as you seem to mention them a lot and the Flames might not draft them often enough.

  11. So in reality, should we be questioning the equipment and not the goaltending? Has goaltending in the nhl gone downhill because of the rule changes in equipment, or have they already started to prior to.

There was a time almost no one was scoring goals, exaggeration, but I think what I am trying to say is, the fact there are only a small handful of goalies in higher status towards elite, has the rule changes exposed the goalies that would otherwise have advantage due to large goalie equipment?

in turn, numbers might have favoured goalies in the past and in reality maybe they were only as good as average goalies today? I wouldn't know which ones would fall in the category...

imagine, in the 80's there were Allen Besters, or Darren Pangs?

i guess what I'm saying is, maybe average goaltending was always a thing that could win chips? Elite does help a lot. Although, even Roy had horrible years in Montreal and could have looked average when he let in like 9 goals? Not that they were his fault... but just saying on bad teams even good goalies don't have good numbers...

I know a Flames scout that lives in Sarnia. lol

but do they listen to him, or all his picks already taken by the time the flames get up to bat? Guess we all just want them to draft better but it's not a great science with kids are drafted and not developed.

P.G. has terrorized Kelowna through 2 games so far. No points for Iginla. No points for any of his teammates either, though. 4-zip & 5-zip.

Brzustewicz has looked good vs London, but that doesn't mean much for his team. They're down 2-0. Bruce had 1g, 2a in the 5-3 loss, nothing in last night's 5-1 loss. Get your brooms out. The Blockchaining Knights are always a massive threat. Every year. It's boring.

Stupid turncoat Hunter's, a pox on you all. lol

you'd think the Flames would scout the "O"... not saying they don't, nor have I done any research on the matter. Just seems they draft the "W" most of the time.

Not sure this is a needed trade right now. Calgary has almost 20 mil in cap space going into next season with only Kylington, Greer and Wolf looking for contracts. The Flames don’t need to move Kadri for cap space, and honestly would put the Flames around the cap floor. Moving any of Markstrom, Mangiapane, Kuzmenko, Andersson, Weegar, Backlund or Coleman without salary coming back would drop Calgary below the floor.

The only good reason to spend well below the cap would be to use it in trades (retaining salary for other teams for example). Otherwise may as well use it on FAs.

Should the Flames take a run at Reinhart, Guentzel, Necas, Middlestat or someone else? Would any of them likely be core pieces coming out of a rebuild in 3-5 years? Would any speed up the rebuild? Would they choose to be part of a rebuild?

I’m not sure trading away cap (only real reason to move Kadri) is what the Flames need to do right now. Markstrom or Vladar to clear space for Wolf makes sense. Moving Mange from 3rd line to clear space for young guys like Pelletier or Coronato makes sense. Moving Anderson to clear space for prospects makes sense. Still need to add cap, but more reason than just clearing cap.

Conroy did suggest the cap flexibility to sign some players. I hope they don't sign anyone just because they have the money to, but do it with the future in mind.

Interesting...can we just make it the bottom 8? Playoff bubble teams likely don't need much, had IR issues or just hit a bad rough patch. A 16th team never needs nor deserves a #1 pick...2020 draft Rangers (37-28-5), while the Wings...(17-49-5). Just brutal. Yeah...they were trying to lose /s. At least they got Raymond at 4 rather than Lafreniere.

Being the worst team forever without getting top picks kills the market. They need the draft's help. Teams just missing the playoffs are less likely to need the help. Your way would have the very worst team constantly picking 17th. I can hear the fan frustration now.

    I agree.

even the PWHL leagues draft rules might make it too hard for the worst team to draft #1 or up in the top 5 even, if they're not winning, it isn't like after they're Mathematically eliminated  going to just magically start winning.

I believe you're talking about Zary!:)

yup, we are getting there with an extra guy. Maybe Kuzmenko goes there too. I might be Jaded...

I know Saks mentioned Tkachuk as an elite. I think we got one year of that out of him. His usage was probably holding him back? Still, I don't think he's a guy who drags the whole team in, which might be elite.

Nah, scoring is the hardest thing to do in hockey.  Yakemchuk can do this.  But yes, he's not high IQ and doesn't defend well.  RW sounds like where he should be. Shades of Dion Phaneuf in some ways.  Still, Yakemchuk has an elite snipe from distance.  He's a rare perimeter shooting threat from the point, something the Flames are missing badly.  Teams are going to pick him very high and forgive the defending shortfalls.  Plus, the 6'-3" frame, grit, and coveted RHS.

Dickinson has some of the same problems too.  He's very Noah Hanifin.  Has all the tools but he's "raw"... Same with Valimaki.  Always raw and needs more seasoning.  But Hanifin never really got it.  Settled in as a 2/3 guy at the NHL level.  Valimaki is only finally coming around too after all these years.

haha, not you; but you lost me at perimeter shooter. I get we need those, but also need guys who actually go to the net when those shots are taken. Good to have, but if the players don't go to screen or dig then the player is useless, and what if they can't do anything else!

Not on the player to worry about the other part of the team game, hope Conroy understands this, that the team has held the puck a lot in the last 10+ years, but not a lot of play in the slot.

    If we had to guess,

    Celebrini

    Demidov

    Levshunov

    Lindstrom

    Dickinson

    Gone by 8.

Not saying they go in that order but they will be gone by 8.  Catton and Buium are the two best of the rest.  If we can get any of them, then that's the best pick.  I hope we get Buium.  Unfortunately, both might be gone too.

And so, draft starts at 8...

Eiserman, Silayev, Parekh, Yakemchuk, Helenius, and Iginla.

    Who to pick here?

Flames will have a brooding 6'5" LW they've reached by 5 spots, who needs work on his foot speed and foot work...

Id like to see them start drafting dynamic players now. BPA is safe, but I dunno. There are no sure-fire stars outside of the top of drafts, but the Flames only operate in the 5-10 range with building or tooling in the re- periods. Bennett  and drafting  4th was unusual for the team...

How do you get elite outside of those top picks?
