That is a big ouch ! I guess that what happens when you have to go for UFAs for the top 2 spots. Time to stack up on prospects and picks....and maybe some GT coaching.
  2. Agreed. Gio, JH, Brodie, Monahan and Bennett are all homegrown and look to be elite or potentially elite talent. And who cares if JH went the college route and Bennett/ Monahan went right to the big club. All three turned pro with the Flames who did a great job bringing them in.
  3. Maybe I haven't seen much of Jared Spurgeon but wow ! The Flames clearly can't pay Russell anything close to that. if they can find a new home for Smid maybe they can go to $4 million but I can't see them going higher. Between Hickey, Wotherspoon, Seiloff, Mattsson, Kylington or Anderrson, the Flames look like they'll have someone move into the top 6 from within. The Flames D is expensive enough and they need to grow someone.

Hiller's next start should be in Stockton. Last night he was almost the difference and not in a good way. Ortio should be good enough to back up Ramo.

The second goal he should have had. I thought the other two were not his fault. I think he had a good night overall.

I thought Ramo played a very good game tonight and seems to be getting stronger. No reason to go away from him now.

Yeah, I have to believe Ortio will be waived at some point in the near future when Hiller gets back. I think it's safe to say the ship has sailed on him as far as the Flames are concerned.

Well, not the first goalie I'd chose from TB but Calgary needs the depth. Calgary doesn't have many healthy goalies right now...2 ? As for Poulin, what a great opportunity for him. The door is wide open to come in a steal an NHL job if he plays well.

Second game in a row that Ramo played well. He made a few big saves and looked more calm back there IMO. The entire team looks like they're finding their game which I'm sure helps the goalie. Tough roadie coming up though...Ortio should get another chance on the back to back.

Hey, one goal allowed and an assist on the game winning goal ! What more do you want from a guy ? Seriously, he did just fine last night and I like that Hartley came out and said he's giving multiple starts to Ramo. The whole goalie situation has been a distraction and I think it kind of send the message to the rest of the team that this is your guy so find a way to win with him. Hopefully it works and they can start building on some success.

It's tough even putting Ortio behind this team right now let alone a true rookie like GIllies. May as well keep coming back to Ramo and Hiller, when he gets healthy. That D seriously needs to tighten up before anyone can have success in goal.

Once again no help from the goalie. Hopefully Hartley gives Ortio a chance to be the guy now. I'm not sure he's the answer but Hiller and Ramo are for sure not good enough.

The injury situation is back luck and that's all there is to it. They have 3 capable goalies in Ramo, Hiller and Ortio. Most teams would envy that. Gillies is an exciting prospect and he's really the big question mark at this point. If the Flames are in the playoffs, I suspect he'll be on his way to Calgary, either as a backup or one of the black aces. I'd love to see him as Hiller's backup, but that's just me.

I wonder how Ortio's injury is coming along. I think they said 6-8 week when be was injured and that was late February. Any updates on him ?
  15. If it were me, I'd keep Wideman and Russell together. Maybe Russell/Wideman Diaz/Brodie Engelland/wotherspoon or Potter I don't like the looks of it but I also don't like the idea of neither of the top pairings having played together before.
  16. I get that he's a very good offensive player but that's a lot of contract for a guy that's worn out his welcome on two teams now. There is obviously something about this player that gives him a limited shelf life and with 7 years left at 8million per ? NFW. The Flames have excellent chemistry and I'd hate for them to bring in other teams problems.
  17. I think Calgary's 3rd pairing has been better of late. Diaz can skate which I think makes life easier for Engelland. Going forward, it would be nice if they could get out from under Smid's (or Engelland's) contract and maybe keep Diaz around for another year or two. Wotherspoon or someone else needs a chance to work their way into the lineup but it's tough when you have a couple $3+ million dollar contracts in the 5-7 dman position.
  18. Are we talking about OEL ? I can't believe that he'd actually be available but if he is, the price would be massive. Calgary's 1st rounder, a very good young player, and a top prospect. I don't even want to think about who'd have to go the other way.

Yeah, I suspect Ortio will be back next week and I want to see if Wotherspoon can help improve that 3rd pairing. Too bad Ady is so far away. A full day of travel just to get to the farm, they ought to put them in Saddledome or Corral for how many tickets they sell.

Unless the AHL all star game is a big deal to Joni, he could probably use the rest. Those all star games seem like a goalie nightmare anyway. Glad to see them keeping him around. I suspect if he falls out of the starter job in Calgary, he'll be sent down but I think he's earned it to keep going with the Flames...at least one more start anyway.

The question I would have if I'm BT is, is Ortio a hot goalie or a really good goalie with a future here ? I don't think they answer that question by sending him down. Keep playing him for as long as he can keep it going and if he turns out to be a really good goalie, get rid of someone to make room for him. Even if he's just on a hot streak, the Flames really needs these wins so I see no reason why they won't keep playing him.

I don't agree that it's too soon for Ortio. He's almost 24, been in the organization for 6 years, is an AHL all star this year, has been excellent and the difference in both starts he's been given, plus he was decent last year for the Flames. IMO, the Flames need better goaltending as Hiller/Ramo are both inconsistent. The opportunity is there right now for Ortio so I'm hoping he plays his way onto the team this season. What to do with Hiller or Ramo is a good problem to have as I think either could be moved for something. I bet the Oilers would take Hiller off our hands ! Anyway, it's always fun watching a fresh face come in and play well. Tonight's game should be a real test for Ortio !

I think it's great that there are so many young guys pushing for spots on the big club. I hope they let Ortio, run with it for as long as he can. Ramo/Hiller is passable but there's room for improvement and it would be great if that came from Ortio. I'd like to see him get several more starts before they think about sending him back. Ideally, he wins a job and they move Hiller or Ramo for a pick or prospect.

Fantastic performance by Ortio ! This should make things interesting come trade deadline.

I'm also hoping to see Ortio tonight. Hiller looked lost last night and has earned a well deserved rest. Ortio is not a kid anymore and needs an opportunity to come in a steal a job.
