  1. According to rumors Necas was in Carolina's offer for Tkachuk. I read somewhere it was Necas and another piece (that may have been a bigger name than Necas) in the deal, but the fact he was in the offer would tell me he's pretty highly valued by Carolina. Long story short, If you want Necas I would be prepared to pay a lot for him. Not sure I see a feasible trade there as Flames don't really have many good assets they can part with right now.
  2. There were a lot of rumors linking him to Ottawa. While I don't think Florida necessarily told him he would be traded, it sounds like this wasn't as much of a shock for him as it was for Huberdeau. Given their cap situation it looks highly unlikely they were going to be able to retain Weegar even if they didn't trade him.
  3. FWIW, Weegar made it sound today like he's already thought about the idea of signing in Calgary. Mentioned it checks a lot of boxes for him, excited to play with Darryl etc. As we've learned it's dangerous to read into what a player says to the media but I just thought it was interesting he went a little out of his way to take about the potential fit with him and the Flames.
  4. I won't read into it much yet. He's gone from thinking his career was going to end in Florida to a new team in a matter of days. That's not easy to wrap your head around. But I do agree, they Flames cannot let him go to UFA i just won't take anything away from his first press conference.
  5. I see no reason to get concerned yet around the org or think that there is a commonality around why Tkachuk and Gaudreau left. All smart market clubs have this challenge and all Canadian small market clubs have this challenge too. I get the idea is to blow this up because it happens twice in one offseason, but I think the rationale has always been here. Adam Fox, Tim Erixon, Chris Drury were all the same and it's commonly reported and understood that Calgary is on a a lot of NTCs. James Neal didn't want to come here, the Flames had to give him an overpriced deal to get him. I think COVID is a factor right now for sure and I think had it not been for COVID there is a good chance Johnny is still a Flame so that's definety a situation they have to manage. I think the arena's and facility are a fairly big deal and certainly not something that helps the Flames. but I mean Tkachuk has been pretty honest he took the 3 year deal he did on purpose so he really wasn't convinced from day 1. At the end of the day this is the modern day athlete. They've grown up in a culture where they have leverage know and I think they are starting to use it. You have player sin the NBA creating super teams, players in the NFL almost playing GM for their team, it's not unique to the NHL. So I'm not sure the Flames have anything to "fix" (outside the arena) but I do think they have to better understand their asset management because I think this is going to happen more and more.
  6. Well we can put to bed the rumor that Huberdeau has a place here. Says outside of playing here has only been to the Stampede. (not suggestion anything just reporting what he said)
  7. I mean i'd sign him to that right now. That would be a borderline steal. But I think it's going to take more than that. I think you have to add in the likes of Nurse, Sergachev, and Dougie Hamilton to the discussion. Weegar has outproduced all 3 of those guys the last 2 seasons and while all 3 of those guys have things like playoff success and more longevity to their name the production is there. Don't get me wrong I'd love to see him in the 6 range, but I do feel he's a better dman than just about everyone on this list.
  8. That's a steal if true. I don't get the criticism he takes, he is a heck of a player who would be a great fit here IMO. After the playoffs Hanifin had we'd be lucky to be able to get a player like Nylander for him. However, the rumor makes no sense. Reily, Muzzin, Gio and Sandin all man the LS in Toronto. They have no use for Hanifin. They are going to put Brent Seabrook on LTIR. After that they would only need to clear 800k-1mill maybe. They don't need to trade a big name/salary player.
  9. I don’t expect Kadri to be an option. Reports indicate he isn’t really interested in being here and it’s take a bad contract. I’ll pass. Flames biggest remaining need is a top 6 center. After that I think they need another LW. I would play Mang with Huberdeau and Lindholm so unless there is a good deal out there I’m not anxious in pursuing a RW. The free agents available that make sense to me: Evan Rodriguez. Flames should be calling this guy a lot. Checks a lot of boxes Paul Statsny. On a 1 year deal he’d give the flames flexibility in their line and deployment. Sonny Milano. Not without warts but a wicked playmaker. I think the flames should take a flyer. Danton Heinen. Smart player, defense first and would improve their bottom 6. That’s pretty much it for me on free agency. Trades are an option but I don’t think it will be for a big fish like Barzal. I don’t think the flames can afford the trade cost nor the contract.
  10. Don’t agree. Flames can not afford to lose him for nothing and if he isn’t going to sign this summer why is he going to next? it’s just reckless and dumb to be quite honest. I understand it’s likely how they will approach it but it’s not smart.
  11. he doesn’t struggle with defense,he’s excellent at it. he just makes head scratching decisions sometimes. Weegar-Tanev is the natural fit on paper.
  12. I can live with Weegar not having a deal but Huberdeau is a must sign before camp or I agree he should be moved.
  13. In terms of immediate impact I don’t see how any team was going to come close to what Florida gave them. You have to account for the UFA risk for sure but it is pretty staggering what they got in return. I don’t see how another team was even close.
  14. I would be surprised if the intention behind this was to intentional not resign them. I think they will try for sure and I think they’ll have a good shot and retaining them. But if the plan is to go all in and the heck with re signing them it will be one of the worst decisions I will have seen this franchise make in sometime.
  15. Honestlh has the chance to wind up the best asset Calgary receives. We saw how much they struggled to defend without Tanev and now they have someone who can defend in all areas. Also will make them more multi dimensional in their transition downside? Get ready for some major errors. Very Brodie like in that way.
  16. Signing bonuses need to be paid no matter what. So protects player against any type of work stoppage or a buyout. You also can negotiate when the bonuses are paid out so gives the player more flexibility and ability to have more of their money in their pockets as opposed to the clubs. so basically more security and more flexibility
  17. I highly doubt this is a contract structure the flames would have done.
  18. I’m not sure I’d be getting optimistic over Kadri. Flames are at about 11mill in cap space and still have Mang to sign. Unless they plan on moving someone out there isn’t room for Kadri
  19. that’s not relevant imo. End of the day it’s all about asset management, especially as a small market club. This isn’t about avoiding rebuilds (I’d welcome one) it’s about managing assets and you can’t let top assets walk for nothing in this market.
  20. totally disagree, that would be another organizational failure. Trading an asset as good as Tkachuk and not setting yourself for at least several more years would be a horrendously bad decision. they either have to sign Huberdeau or if he won’t then they need to flip him. Anything else will make this trade a failure.
  21. As much as I question getting older there is no question you have to give Treliving a lot of credit here. You lose your two best players in one off season you would assume your team is done but he’s managed to lose both guys and still make his team a contender within the division. That’s pretty impressive. I think asking why they didn’t get future is valid but it’s also not likely the preferred route for the org. Something will need to get sorted out ok D. I would be surprised if the Flames got Weegar and then put him on the 3rd pair and they are staring to stack some depth. Valimaki,Kylington and Mackey all require waivers and I believe the flames are really high on Mackey. So something had to give I think.
  22. Weegar is good. Flames suddenly stacked at RD
  23. This is certainly making the most of a bad situation. Think this puts the flames back in the division conversation I think. but it is a curious direction. I’m not shocked as you know the org wants to compete o just didn’t think they’d move Tkachuk and get older. Guess we’ll see what happens and if both these players stay. But this is certainly more talent than k thought they’d get for him.
  24. This is the type of dman the flames lack since Gio’s prime. Weagner is an underrated part of this for me. but flip side he’s gonna be expensive
  25. First reaction. That is a boatload of talent in one deal. Huberdeau is a top line talent and Waegner Is the puck rushing Dman they need. but 2 pending UFAs both over 27 and both looking for big deals? I know it was a tough situation and this is a lot of talent but this is a disappointing direction to see quite honestly.
