  1. I don't know that you do. Sure if a Cale Makar is out there it be great (very much kidding of course) but I don't know that you need that type of blueliner to contend. I think in may cases you do because normally if you have that player you don't have the depth to back it up but Flames are built different. They are going to run, IMO at least, 2 number 1 type pairings out there and their 3rd pairing will be solid as well. They've got 2 players who have excelled in matching up well against top end players as well. You always want everything, but i'm not convinced that a game changing/norris style dman is a necessity to compete for a cup.
  2. because it’s typically been overrated but this core is different for me. This is the first time they have depth and balance. Not just balance in terms of offense vs D but balance in terms of skills sets. LS vs RS, physical vs more finesse, ability to defend vs puck rush/posses, exit vs entires etc etc. Flames have not a d core this talent since the 80s/90s imo. I don’t really care about best in the league stuff, but I’m very excited about this d core.
  3. I don’t really see talking about a buyout as a problem. I think anytime you sign a player into their late 30s you are hoping the team keeps some flex ability to move on if the age curve kicks in. Doesn’t mean it will or that they will exercise it but I just think it’s nice knowing the flames kept some level of protection in the deal. doesn’t really need to be seen in a negative light.
  4. to be fair "enjoying nice things" and "Flames fans" don't tend to co exists well.... 😀
  5. A buyout costs them a 1/3 of their remaining salary. It's not a preferred route for players or agents.
  6. Of course he should be held responsible, i'm not suggesting he shouldn't. I'm simply suggesting if the team struggles on the ice ask why as it may not trace back to the GM. See and the way I look at it your questions right now have answers: - I think they did try and project who plays with who because I know I've done it. You have complimentary skill sets up and down the lineup. On top of that the skill sets that the flames lost they've replaced in these new players and by adding Weegar they've added a skill set that they missed in the playoffs and was costly. - I have. I agree a Kadri regression is coming but that is ok because the Flames don't need Kadri to be an 80 point center. if he is fantastic, but in order to be a top end team they need Kadri to be what he has been for his career, not last year. If Kadri is a 50 point center but doing all of the details and attributes his known for (good two way play, good puck moving, moving puck to high danger areas) the Flames are a top end team (probably a contender) - Why would it be a mistake to bring back Zadorov? - Who cares if you paid Mang too much? You just retained a top end goal scorer who has been one for the last several years (including one of the best player drivers in the league) - Dumping Lucic was not an option if they wanted to bring in Kadri and continue to look to improve the lineup. Again i'm not suggesting Trelving all i'm emphasizing is IMO process is key for a GM. If I look at the process of how he built this team i'm not really seeing where he went wrong. You have to make decision and put a plan in place based on info you have at the time, not try and guess what is going to happen.
  7. How can a GM pre determine chemistry? How does a GM plan for serious regression? I view a GMs job as to mitigate risk. He didn't acquire anyone who appears to be at risk for serious regression. I'm not saying things will go perfect and of course things could not go well but if the don't go well i'm not sure it will be on the GM or something he could have/should have foreseen. At the end of the day i'm about process and while results are important in pro sports there is also a whole pile of grey area between process and results in this business, most of it outside of a GMs control.
  8. So a GM does his job, does it "crazy" well, and if the players don't do theirs we should fire the GM? I get where this is coming from but this is the logic I'm not sure I really understand anymore and it's what leads to unnecessary turnover of positions IMO. Treliving isn't perfect but I think if you go shopping for a new GM you are likely to do worse and not better. Just a guess on this but I think an extension is a bit of a formality with Treliving. I don't think the owners ae making him earn the job or anything, they just not negotiate this stuff in public anymore.
  9. For sure, I just don't think that will happen in 2 years. Could be wrong but i'm comfortable thinking they can get 4-5 years out of those guys. Wasn't directed at you. Hall just keeps coming up in this thread and I don't get why.
  10. No rules around that if the contract is signed before age 35. I mean it won't be cheap so not saying it should happen just that at least with it being light on SB it's an option in the last 2 years.
  11. I think this does the best job of highlighting what you are getting with Kadri. A center who is good at almost everything but whose point totals fluctuate greatly because his ability to finish can vary so much. So don't be surprised if his point totals don't blow you away. But at the same time he's excellent at driving play, excellent at setting up his teammates and creating offence. Flames were badly lacking in that area. He may never hit lasts year's number again but at the same time those numbers do indicate he's got that high end of talent if he can put it together.
  12. That is a decent deal. No SB the last 2 years make a buyout a potential option if it got there.
  13. I got the Hall fascination a few years ago but now I don't get it at all. Why do we want to tie up more money in a LS LW?
  14. I don't see the Flames having a small window at all in fact i'd argue they are looking at a good 4 year span here where they should be a good to great team. Assuming Weegar signs, which sounds like a formality, the next trigger point is Lindholm but there is plenty of money left for him. Yes they have a lot of expiring deals in 2 years but it's mosty (outside of Lindholm) the support players. Critical yes but replaceable via the farm or in FA. On top of that I thikn they have assets they can move. Dube likely has value, Hanifin has value, they've got prospects and picks. They are not asset rich by any means but they've got flexibility under the cap and they've got options to play around with to fill those holes and move salary around. I don't see this as a 2 year thing.
  15. You'll appreciate the wording of what he said here. There really not that locked. Overreaction to say they can't move the picks, it's just got layers to it.
  16. I know many are penciling in Pelletier into the lineup but I will actually be surprised if that happens. Sutter's already made comments he felt Dube was here too soon so I'd be surprised if he is pro Pelletier on the team. I think another forward is coming in.
  17. The 2nd buyout window is only open for 48 hours and it based on when the team's arb cases are over not the leagues. So for the Flames it's already closed and no more buyouts are allowed for the rest of the off-season. Flames could have asked but i see no reason why Monahan would say yes. Tanev is expected to be healthy to start and even if he wasn't putting on LTIR for a short period of time doesn't solve anything. Still would have needed to get cap compliant and dumping someone you just signed to a 2 year deal if a pretty low blow move for an organization. it sucks to lose the first but this was the only way they were getting Kadri.
  18. Picks conditions broken down in a relatively easy to understand way
  19. Wasn't really an option. He's still considered injuried so you would need his permission and in addition it wouldn't have cleared the space needed to sign Kadri.
  20. There is what made the trade possible.
  21. Could be a player or a pick. Should have clarified. I would be very surprised if it was a 4th. It won't be much. Future considerations needs to be listed in order to satisfy the trade as the NHL doesn't allow trades for money or trades for nothing.
  22. Normally there is a list of players the Habs provide and Calgary can pick someone off of that list at a future time to complete the trade. Don't hold your breath it will be anyone of value though.
  23. Now official from the team Took a few years but Treliving finally gets his guy he wanted in 2019 and gives the Flames the best center depth they've had in probably close to 30 years.
