  1. “technically” speaking as in they can talk but are not supposed to get into any type of agreement. They can discuss interest/happiness/willingness to stay for sure. hard rule to strictly enforce. but for sure they can’t register a new contract until July.
  2. Guess it depends on the definition of “haul” but I’m not as positive we’d like the return I think Lindholm return would mirror the Bo Horvat trade.
  3. Lindholm cannot sign a contact extension until July 1, and technically speaking the flames can’t even approach him until then. Ineligible to do so until the new league year starts. I took Backlunds comments with a more pessimistic tone. I don’t think he liked what he sees here, didn’t like how the season panned out and is second guessing if this is where he wants to be. I’ll be a little surprised if he stays if I’m being honest. there was not a lot of optimism today. Pretty clear to me now the rumors of this team/coaching staff not seeing eye to eye are true and that the uncertainty about what this organization wants to do is weighing on them too. Murray Edwards and/or John Bean should really be speaking on this. The fact those two remain so silent in this organization only furthers the fan sentiment imo.
  4. hes definitely become an intriguing prospect for the organization. Big step forward this year and he’s tracking pretty well. I would be surprised if he plays though, unless they go deep and have injuries. I think what’s more intriguing is do they sign him this year and turn him pro or send him back for his 20 year old year.
  5. I think Toews is physically done and I don’t think he can give you much over an 82 game season. I wouldn’t sign him for league min. I hope he retires and enjoys what life he can.
  6. The “Flames” way to approach this off-season will be to let Treliving walk and call it a mutual decision. Promote Conroy to the GM chair, keep Sutter and run it back with some small work around the edges. Conroy will be cheap (comparatively) likely to get along with Sutter and won’t likely push back on their plans. that’s my expectation for what will transpire. Anything outside of that would make the various insiders who are saying buckle up, be correct. a Kadri trade would be my prediction for an out of left field move.
  7. while this is possible I also believe the Flames made a decision several years ago they weren’t going to do contract extensions with their staff anymore. Sutter appears to have been an exception to this but I also believe Sutters normal extension includes a clause where he can’t be “fired” but allowed to walk if both sides agree. So while it appears he was extended he might not have been in the traditional sense. Can’t say for sure any of this is true for a fact as it’s only based on what I’ve heard the flames state publicly.
  8. Nice to see the flames do the right thing and get these kids some games. I expect wolf is gonna have a rough one though. This team wasn’t getting up for games in a a playoff race so I’m not sure winning one for a 22 year old kid is gonna matter much. doesn’t really matter just hope we don’t get an overreaction either way.
  9. say what??? He set a career high in points with 55. He had more 5 on 5 points than Lindholm. Top 35-40 in 5 on 5 points for centers, while being deployed as the 3rd line center. Think our expectations are a little out of wack here (as they often are with Backs) Backlunds gonna be a tough move in the off season because of his cap hit. But if the flames wait till the deadline, are prepared to eat money (and provided he doesn’t regress) I’d be shocked if they didn’t get a first + for him. Backlunds the exactly type or center multiple teams would fall all over to get for a playoff run.
  10. 2 reasons. First- Trading Backlunds cap hit away wouldn’t have been enough to sign Kadri. Second is the flames wanted to win this season and needed Backlund far more than they needed Monahan.
  11. believe it had more to do with Sutter and circumstances than Kadri. And the fact that Gaudreau and Tkachuk leaving signaled a potential rebuild. Kadri and the Huberdeau trade are likely what rescinded the offer.
  12. I agree with this. To clarify I don’t expect them to pick a new direction either. When I I say pick a direction I mean are we working with Treliving(or a new GMs) vision of a team or Sutters. I cannot see this team being pulled apart and can’t see the directives from ownership changing.
  13. The good that I hope comes from tonight? Flames got another great look at what Saros can do and what Wolf might be. Zero reason he shouldn’t be on this team next year.
  14. Obvious first domino is not just GM but direction of the team. Pretty clear by now that this GM and coach are not on the same page so who wins? Do either of them win? Been hints we could see massive change but is just one of them big enough? So what’s the direction and then from there dominos will fall. Treliving going is debatable (although I too am leaning that he likely leaves on his own) but the only thing I’m sure of is Sutter cannot return. He did an awful job this year but outside of that he just is not the right coach for the game today and the org. He just has the wrong philosophy around young players and imo has to go for this team primarily. I sure as heck don’t want to have to see more young players get frustrated or wasted because of him. so pick a direction and let go of Sutter and then we can talk.
  15. Small part of this. Most of it is I actually think he’s doing well given the circumstances. I don’t think the circumstances are ideal for any GM here. so unless those circumstances change a new GM is very much a careful what you wish for scenario. I don’t see how they attract a top candidate and I think the next guy is going to do a lot of the same actions that Treliving gets criticized for. I think the best case scenario is the flames are sitting on someone in Conroy. I’m skeptical but that be best case I think.
  16. Season on the line and you pick Nick Ritchie. Sutter either wants to be fired or has an axe to grind with someone because that’s about as bad a coaching decision as I’ve ever seen.
  17. Baertschi was already out of the organization by the time Pananrin signed. exactly. They are bad so they had no problems guaranteeing him the ice time and opportunity he was after. This complaint would have made sense under Sutter but since he stopped being the GM this just isn’t true. They drafted 7 Russians under Treliving, Feaster signed 2 players out of the KHL, they were a finalist for Panarin and they had Kucherkov on their draft board. Just another false narrative trying to be pushed with made up info.
  18. Panarin signed in April of 2015. At that time the flame LWs were: Gaudreau Lance Bouma Michael Ferland Paul Byron Mason Raymond. Yup pretty stacked…. It’s not that money isn’t a factor, NHL rules prevent it from being one. No players, regardless of draft status, is an j restricted free agent until 27. So these guys coming over have to sign the same entry level contracts rookies (it’s why Kuzumenko only signed a 1 year deal). So trams can’t offer them more money it comes down to opportunity, winning, location etc. Which is why I say why is Calgary going to win many of these?
  19. Kuzmenko’s demands were he had to have top 6 mins and a guaranteed spot on the PP. wouldn’t sign unless both of that was guaranteed. Can debate if it’s worth it to sacrifice your culture for that but we can’t debate who the head coach is. FWIW, flames were a finalist for Pananrin. Picked the Hawks because they were a cup contender but Flames were a finalist. Just in case we actually want to believe a completely made up narrative that the Flames don’t scout Russia. I mean let’s also remember this is Calgary. We really think too free agents who can go wherever they want are going to pick to sign and live in Calgary?
  20. Typical. They prolong it only to come Up short. Game was exactly how their last few weeks have gone. They can say whatever they want but there is no belief in this team, no confidence . They show you that every game.
  21. Typical flames this season. Too passive and too conservative to try and win a game in regulation so they’d rather leave it to chance in Ot or shootout. just ridiculous way to play the game.
  22. what narrative is being changed and who is saying they have massive potential? What’s funny though is I’d argue Porier has as much a ceiling as Schneider (Schneider has the much higher floor) and that Porier was thought of as a potential first round pick by some. How do I know? It’s pretty standard operating procedure. You wouldn’t trade a pick to a team who was going to take your guy and you don’t trade down unless you’re going to get your guy or someone of the same caliber. Teams do their homework, this isn’t a guessing game like it seems to us. If the flames wanted Schneider over Zary they would have stayed and taken him and they damn sure wouldn’t have traded the pick to the Rangers for them to take him. They liked Zary more or at worse they had them tied and thought a 3rd round pick was better value. It’s 2 separate decisions. 1- rank Zary higher and then 2 trade back to get player we like or the same caliber. Debate 1 all you like but number 2 is a no brainer. same as Jankowski. Ranking him that high was bad but trading down to take him and gettin value was also a no brainer. If you are trading down and still getting your guy you do it every single time. That year they just had the wrong guy. Always fair to debate whether or not you have the right guy. In 20 years the Flames have traded down in the first round 4 times and one of which was for Backlund. probably traded up as many times as they’ve traded down.
  23. as I said if you would have preferred Schneider fine but the point here is that had nothing to do with the trade down. They preferred Zary and as such did the wise thing and pick him AND additional assets. Can debate Schneider vs Zary as much as you’d like as it’s a fair and reasonable one. Time will tell, it’s the focus on the trade down that makes no sense. It was absolutely the right decision and really not debatable. but as long as you keep dealing with hyperbole it’s tough to have a discussion -it is not certain that every team in the nhl would want Schneider over Zary/Porier. -Zary was not “off the board” -can’t act like there is a consensus scouting board. Every team is different. -trading up is significantly more difficult then you suggest. You should look up what that it costs teams to do.
  24. Weird complaint. They lacked depth on D so they trade down to pick one up and it’s a bad move? Weird how this is being framed. The analysis here isn’t hard. would you rather have: Connor Zary or Connor Zary, Porier, Jake Boltman. That’s what you were getting in that draft. They had Zary ranked higher than Schneider so trading down didn’t cost them anything they only gained. if you want to debate that they should have had Schneider ranked right then fine but the trade down had nothing to do with that.
