Hockey News Future Watch 2016

New copy just came out. Flames have a B rating and rank 15th overall. The top 10:

1. Gilles (ranked as the 37th best prospect in their league top 50)

2. Porier

3. Andersson

4. Kylington

5. Jankwoski

6. Shinkaruk

7. Hickey

8. Arnold

9. Mangiapanne

10. Kulak

I think this is about what I was expecting. Gilles is really the only top prospect but some decent depth keeps their rating high. Flames have a chance to add to the top end talent this year which should move then back into the top 10. So overal, things are still solid.

I disagree a bit with the rankings but there are no glaring omissions IMO.

EDIT: should be noted that the Hockey News ranks their top 10 per team based on who they think has the most potential 3-5 years down the road and not necessarily based on current play or NHL readiness.

That is just silly. He is a 5 round pick that regressed this season so he wasn't part of the plans. All prospects have other options if it isn't working with out for them. There are plenty of great Russians playing in the NHL.

That all aside though, Karnaukhov isn't even Russian. Sheesh.

I agree.  Poirier doesn't have that ceiling anymore.  Not saying his career is done but he really needs to elevate his game another notch.  Otherwise, he's too bland and risks becoming a career AHLer. I'm actually surprised Klimchuk is not on the list as i felt he's progressing well and could factor into the Flames future in that Stempniak/Glencross role.

 

Shinkaruk also has a good chance to make the Flames out of camp.  His defensive awareness is weak but he hangs out where goal scorers hang out and he can find that open space.

Thanks for the update, i didn't know.  My viewings of Karnaukov was limited but he did look alright.  Big guy with energy and good wheels.  Would've been a 3rd/4th liner in the NHL if he panned out.  It's too bad.

The Flames will still hold Karnaukhov's rights for quite some time.  I'm perfectly happy letting him go to the KHL to develop his game and then try to come back to the NHL in a couple years.  It may actually be the best thing for his long term development.  If he doesn't come back it's not a big loss for a late rounder.

Agreed, not to mention the Calgary Sun is saying its believed to only be a 1 year deal. Could be a real chance he is back in NA next season. Way too premature to suggest he is gone and not coming back. 

 

People are quick to forget that both Kari Ramo and Mark Giordano went to Europe and both came back. KHL has become a legitimate development option. Agreed with Red that there is a chance this is actually a positive for Karnaukhov from a development standpoint.

Yeah, I was going to same the same thing, but decided not to.  I actually think the KHL might be a good place for him to become a pro right now.  If he never comes back, oh well.  If he does, he may be well seasoned.

I took out some of the prospects that are still in junior.  Also removed the guys we passed on.  I actually have Ollas-Mattsson higher than Hickey, but he never seems to make it here to dev camp.

Treliving said they weren't going to offer Gilmour an NHL deal but an AHL deal was possible. I cant' recall him specifially mentioning DeBlouw but I do seem to remember the buzz being they weren't going to offer him an NHL deal either.

On Ollas and Rafikov they will never make it to Calgary so when do they get the option to go back through the draft or is it to late for them? I found this.

Signability: If a player is not drafted by age of 20, that player becomes an unrestricted free agent. A player not signed by drafted team within two years can reenter draft, assuming they are still eligible, and if they are not eligible, will become unrestricted an free agent. A team has the rights of an NCAA player until 30 days after the player leaves the college. If a player is drafted a second time, they can not reenter the draft. If a player has entered the draft twice and not been selected, they then become free agents regardless of age. A non-North American player can not be signed unless they are drafted first. So Adam can now I think eligible to reenter the draft correct same with Rafikov?

add to the above he was asked to change/work on his play in all 3 zones.

 

Ryan Huska said at the end of the season he worked hard at this goal and played well for them last season.

I would like to see Adam Ollas-Mattsson in camp to get a true read of where he is compared to Wotherspoon and Kulak.

I think he is NHL size right now, but don't know if he has the speed yet.  He is really just a shut-down d-man, so they tend to have a lower rating than offensive guys.

 

Any thoughts on AOM?
