I'm kinda split on this news about the TV ratings... i was hoping the league would feel some real damage as a result of the lockout.. but on the other hand, its good to see my favorite sport doing well...

That was up 16 per cent from the previous record of 2,875,000 (set April 7, 2007, when the Leafs knocked off the Canadiens to stay in the hunt for a playoff spot) and a 44 per cent rise from the same weekend in January, 2012.

Even the CBC’s half-hour pre-game broadcast attracted 2,106,000 viewers.

-The “Prime West” game on CBC, which surely struggled to keep the interest of Canucks fans, 1.471 million viewers. That is the highest rated late game since Hockey Day in Canada last season.

The ratings will drop and the buzz will die down. Most people want to see how their respective teams look out of the gate.

seangentille 9:31am via TweetDeck Fans in Minnesota were so angered—so betrayed—by the lockout that they smashed local TV ratings records. Twice.

http://aol.sportingnews.com/nhl/story/2013-01-23/nhl-tv-ratings-minnesota-wild-fox-sports-north-nbc-hockey-nielsen

Minnesota hockey fans were quick to forgive and forget following the NHL lockout.

Fox Sports North's telecast of the Minnesota Wild's season opener on Saturday generated a 7.65 household rating in the Minneapolis-St. Paul market, according to Nielsen Media Research. That shattered the club's previous regular-season record of 4.6, set Dec. 13, 2011.

In the Minneapolis-St. Paul market, one rating point represents 17,280 households. So that means more than 132,100 households tuned into the Wild's opener.

Sunday's game also broke the previous record, drawing a 5.35 rating.

COMCAST SPORTSNET DELIVERS ITS HIGHEST CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS REGULAR SEASON GAME RATING TO DATE

Last Night’s Blackhawks Home Opener vs. STL attracts over 188,000 Households on Comcast SportsNet;

#1 Highest-Rated Television Network in Chicago market from 7:30-10:15 PM for Adults 25-54

Chicago, IL (January 23, 2013) – Comcast SportsNet, the television home for the most games and most comprehensive coverage of the Chicago Blackhawks, delivered its highest Blackhawks regular season rating ever last evening (January 22) -- a 5.40 household rating for its live coverage of the Blackhawks home opener against the division rival St. Louis Blues.

- Finally, the Devils-Flyers game on Tuesday drew an 0.77 rating in the New York market. It may not seem like great shakes, but it is a record for a Devils telecast (against a team that wasn't the Rangers or Islanders) in the New York market.

Another insane TV rating for the Pens. Last nights game vs Toronto drew a 15.1 rating. Keep in mind that was for a home game.

Bettman is grateful and excited about early ratings

http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2013/01/23/bettman-is-grateful-and-excited-about-early-ratings/

No Sh.t! If you've read thru this thread, you know why.

“We could be hopeful all we wanted, but we didn’t take anything for granted,” Bettman said. “We are grateful and we are excited.”

The NHL’s long-standing commissioner credited fan outreach programs and discounts (the Ottawa Senators gave out free beer, for instance) as a big reason for the bounce back.

“We really thought that it was most important initially that the fans reconnect with their teams,” Bettman said. “We took out ads in every market nationally in Canada and the U.S. But we thought it was more important initially that all of our efforts be focused on backstopping the clubs as they reached out.”

It’s probably wise that he didn’t trot out his “greatest fans in the world” line again, though.

The Bruins-Rangers game, which went to overtime and was overall a pretty great game, drew 956,000 viewers, the best-ever for NBC Sports Network, VERSUS, or OLN for a regular season game. The previous record was set on opening night of the 2011-12 season, when Flyers-Bruins drew 874,000 viewers on Oct. 6.

-Although there was a dip on Tuesday for their 3-2 loss in Chicago, the rating (6.2) was the third-best for an FSM Blues regular-season game.

Ratings for Thursday’s game are not yet available, but the trend though three games is strong. The average rating for the those games was 6.5, more than triple the 2.0 figure at the same point last season.

The NHL reports that average per-game announced attendance is up 6.6 percent, or more than 1,000 fans per game, through the first 49 games of this season compared to the first 49 last season.

----------

This is almost beyond crazy for the league!

Attendance up on average 1000 people/game!

The only 2 teams lagging behind: Phoenix (no surprise till ownership gets finalized), and Colorado.

22 teams have sold out all games to start the season...

The next 6 have sold between 95% - 99% of all seats..

Then the Avs at 90% and the Yotes at 79%

(Phoenix is still ahead of last yr's average of 72.5% capacity)

----

Haven't really heard numbers from Alberta or BC in terms of ratings.

Florida preseason practices were netting in the thousands viewers in attendance. First few days of reg schedule for this season were all sellouts which I read was a record. Fan960 had an interview with the promotions guy for the fanattic (the Flames gear shop). They have a 50% discount going and have set records on items sold. In some instances things like Jerseys are selling at 5-10x times normal amounts sold.

I haven't heard of any fallout or falloff in revenues or attendance anywhere especially in Canada. The only lost revenues I can see were the revenues they lost while locked out.

Calgary drew 296,000 viewers for its loss to San Jose, up 120 percent from the team's first broadcast last season. Edmonton (386,000, up 24 percent from first broadcast in 2011-12) and Vancouver (623,000, up 32 percent from first broadcast in 2011-12) combined for more 1 million viewers for their game on Sunday across two different Sportsnet stations. Meanwhile, the Senators' first Sportsnet broadcast on Monday drew 308,000 viewers, up 50 percent from their first broadcast of last season.

http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/2013/1/29/3929038/wild-vs-blues-continues-good-ratings-fortune-for-nbc-sports-network

Sunday night gave NBC Sports Network a milestone that they couldn't reach at any point during last season.

Their telecast of the St. Louis Blues exciting, 5-4 overtime victory over the Minnesota Wild scored 401,000 viewers for the network. That marked the third consecutive NBCSN regular season telecast to hit over 400,000 viewers, something the network was unable to accomplish at any point last season. ...

The NBC Sports Network is now currently averaging 491,000 viewers through five telecasts. As a reminder, the NBC Sports Network average for the 2011-12 season was 332,000.

Obviously expect the average number to decrease, but it's a record start.
