s4xon Posted January 23, 2013 Report Share Posted January 23, 2013 Wow man, OK I am here to take the ribbing like a man yea, terrible coverage, people wandering around, two guys chasing behind the net leaving the front wide open, Dubnyk was nothing short of detestible, an NHL team couldn't look any worse than Edmonton did in that period. It is quite satisfying watching Duthie squirm, having to broadcast the negatives on his precious boys club. Especially when they tanked harder in one period than the Flames did in 3. I don't recall you proclaiming the .916 Sv % was all the Oilers needed to gain a playoff berth. You are right it was a terrible period of hockey. All I've heard since the CBA papers were getting signed was how this was a team of destiny and how this team had finally arrived. I was even shaking my head watching that TSN opening. I know Duthie tried to back track a bit, but comparisons to Gretzky, Kurri, Messier? Geez, a little lofty, no? Can you all wait until they win something more than a lottery? They do have to figure out how to create space, because no team is going to give them any. The whole 1st period was shades of our 5 minute collapse. Let SJ dictate the play and they'll kill you fast. If you dictate the play, they have enough skill to keep it close, but you HAVE to play 60 minutes of hockey against them and avoid the sinbin, as we're seeing. I was just telling Conner(which is why I quoted his comments) that his on paper projections were pretty much shot with that one period of play. While the reality is they "could" still get to that figure he said was needed, the truth is, it would now take a long period of stellar goaltending or a string of shutouts, to get it back in the ballpark. Devan Dubnyk stats: I didn't see that from the Oiler D core last night even after the 1st period. Any injuries would just further complicate their ability to attain it. Just not going to happen. I am going to say you will have to rethink your "on paper playoff" Oilers. -5 goal diff in first period shows me your D is still extremely weak and highly disorganized. I don't look at last years 8th place team(LA) and hope my team can duplicate or better what they did by juggling figures on paper and projecting them on my team. Besides this is the Oiler thread and what my feelings on the Flames are, would be off topic. So now you figure they can allow 98.4 goals and I was only pointing out they are on pace for 192 goals allowed this season. Your new improved and healthy I might add, Defense is on pace for just shy of twice as many goals allowed as your projections. Hey I am glad you got the council to approve the old figures on your arena again. You have to wonder now how the Oilers are going to find the other 100+ mil to finish financing on it. Lottos haven't worked in the past and the province keeps saying it is not coming from us. I wouldn't expect the Flames to duplicate the Oilers. They have already said they want to go their own route. That means they want to see where you guys screw up first so they don't look nearly as incompetent and can bypass your pitfalls. I'm predicting that the SJS game was just a one-off and they will be back to form, but we've seen this happen before when one stinker sends us on a big losing skid. Saturday will likely be a very important game for both teams. It should be an interesting game for the Flames. Cervenka and Hudler for the first time this year! I would expect Hartley to have a better idea of the line combos that are working and the defense pairings/players that add the most value. I don't know what to expect from the Flames; when they played run and gun against the Oils last year, they had their butts kicked. This year, they seem to be able to play that style, well mostly. Hartley needs to balance the D so they can take away the space from the Oils, when Tnaguay or whoever does a drop pass at the blueline. ARggg.
