Wow man, OK I am here to take the ribbing like a man ;)

yea, terrible coverage, people wandering around, two guys chasing behind the net leaving the front wide open, Dubnyk was nothing short of detestible, an NHL team couldn't look any worse than Edmonton did in that period.

It is quite satisfying watching Duthie squirm, having to broadcast the negatives on his precious boys club. Especially when they tanked harder in one period than the Flames did in 3.

I don't recall you proclaiming the .916 Sv % was all the Oilers needed to gain a playoff berth. You are right it was a terrible period of hockey.

Did it set records? 6 goals allowed in 1 period that should be close.

I really hope this game, specifically the first period, really forces everyone to take a step back. This isn't a Flames fan coming in this thread just throwing trash at the Oilers, but I was really getting sick of all the talk from fans and media that this team was going to be amazing. All I've heard since the CBA papers were getting signed was how this was a team of destiny and how this team had finally arrived. I was even shaking my head watching that TSN opening. I know Duthie tried to back track a bit, but comparisons to Gretzky, Kurri, Messier? Geez, a little lofty, no? Can you all wait until they win something more than a lottery?

I'm an oil fan and I totally agree. This WAS just one shaky game but why build a team up like that? The media needs to simmer

Just one game, they were skating in mud and letting SJ dictate the play. They do have to figure out how to create space, because no team is going to give them any.

The whole 1st period was shades of our 5 minute collapse. Let SJ dictate the play and they'll kill you fast. If you dictate the play, they have enough skill to keep it close, but you HAVE to play 60 minutes of hockey against them and avoid the sinbin, as we're seeing.

I wanted to clarify that I was not trying to troll the Oiler fans here. I was just telling Conner(which is why I quoted his comments) that his on paper projections were pretty much shot with that one period of play.

While the reality is they "could" still get to that figure he said was needed, the truth is, it would now take a long period of stellar goaltending or a string of shutouts, to get it back in the ballpark.

Devan Dubnyk stats:

I didn't see that from the Oiler D core last night even after the 1st period. Any injuries would just further complicate their ability to attain it.

So much for your .916 sv%. 6 goals in 1 period is going to set your goaltenders combined % for the rest of the shortened season. Just not going to happen.

I am going to say you will have to rethink your "on paper playoff" Oilers. -5 goal diff in first period shows me your D is still extremely weak and highly disorganized.

One game, one period does not make a goalie, a team or a season.

Lets give it a month before we start saying expectations were exaggerated.

If Dubnyk plats 40ish games this season, taht will be around 2400 shots, give or take. To have a .918% he has to let in 197 or less goals. He still has 189 to go.

You were close Deeds, but the old record stays intact... http://www.edmontonsun.com/2013/01/23/optional-skate-reviewed--barrage-not-a-record-breaker--who-says-the-other-team-scored--walked-a-mile-in-those-shoes

"The six goals weren’t the most ever given up by the Oilers in a period, having conceded seven in a frame once."

"However, the last time they gave up six in the first period was March 30, 1999, when the Phoenix Coyotes posted a half dozen."

They don't give the specifics on the 7 goals against in one period in the article, but it was on January 17, 1980 - First period, Bruins 7, Oilers 1

Math does not appear to be your best subject. 2400 shots is 50 shots per game avg. If he only plays the 40 games you are penciling in, that is 60 shots per game he plays. Your team to date has only faced 30 shots per game and is already way over your on paper targets.

I had 80 games in my head.

Regardless, 40 games and 30 shots a game is 1200 shots of he has a .918% that would mean he lets in 8.2% it would be 98.4 goals allowed in the season.

He still has 90 goals to go. Your really can't wait for the Oilers to disappoint. Is that to make you feel better about your team?

Oilers building a new arena to go with their up and coming team. Watch now for Calgary to do what they usually do and copy what Edmonton does.

Well you are the one making all the bold claims about the Oilers. I don't look at last years 8th place team(LA) and hope my team can duplicate or better what they did by juggling figures on paper and projecting them on my team. Besides this is the Oiler thread and what my feelings on the Flames are, would be off topic.

So now you figure they can allow 98.4 goals and I was only pointing out they are on pace for 192 goals allowed this season. Your new improved and healthy I might add, Defense is on pace for just shy of twice as many goals allowed as your projections.

Hey I am glad you got the council to approve the old figures on your arena again. You have to wonder now how the Oilers are going to find the other 100+ mil to finish financing on it. Lottos haven't worked in the past and the province keeps saying it is not coming from us.

I wouldn't expect the Flames to duplicate the Oilers. They have already said they want to go their own route. That means they want to see where you guys screw up first so they don't look nearly as incompetent and can bypass your pitfalls. You can be sure our proposal won't include things like a Casino if we can't get a permit to run it first.

Have you seen the updated plans?

toiletbowl-1_zpsd6f5cb5c.jpg

In the words of Larry the Cable Guy, "I don't care who you are, that's funny right there"

In all seriousness though, todays news that an agreement has finally been made is very big news for the city of Edmonton and really Alberta as a whole. the new arena complex in Edmonton will be an amazing place and will for the time being be one of the pinnacle hockey stadiums on the planet.

Can't argue that... the original plans looked unreal. Hope its executed to its full potential.

A lot of people will be jealous... It will be the first arena with a retractable roof in Alberta...

It sounds like it will be state of the art... You can bet I will be there for some games and concerts...

Flames are going to be desperate for a win against the Oilers on Saturday

We shouldn't kid ourselves, Edmonton will be desperate for a win Saturday too after that stinker we played against San Jose, and if the Kings take it to us after they've been pretty much embarassed every game they've played this season, things will really not be so rosy for ourselves. I'm predicting that the SJS game was just a one-off and they will be back to form, but we've seen this happen before when one stinker sends us on a big losing skid. Saturday will likely be a very important game for both teams.

It should be an interesting game for the Flames. Cervenka and Hudler for the first time this year! I would expect Hartley to have a better idea of the line combos that are working and the defense pairings/players that add the most value.

I don't know what to expect from the Flames; when they played run and gun against the Oils last year, they had their butts kicked. This year, they seem to be able to play that style, well mostly. Hartley needs to balance the D so they can take away the space from the Oils, when Tnaguay or whoever does a drop pass at the blueline. ARggg.
