Some of those holy crap saves come as a result of the goalie not tracking properly and desparately reacting, or overplaying an angle and desparately reaching back (MAF). Smith stays on his goal line a lot - which I’m not the biggest fan of, but playing the way he does would reduce the opportunities for “holy crap” saves. Goalies play to their strengths, some (Smith) may not be as acrobatic as others.

I hope this doesn’t come off as an attack JT. I respectfully see things differently than you.
  3. Misunderstood some of the above posts. Removed my entry. Tkachuk is is a great player and fit for our team, and I’m comfortable with the person in charge of working out his next deal. Go flames!
  4. Was going to write up something like this myself! I definitely appreciate having him as our GM!
  5. While you're absolutely right to make the correlation, I just have a gut feeling that Backlund will sign again with a home team discount. - he's only played for Calgary (has roots here) - we have (on paper) a playoff team that has potential to make noise in the playoffs - the flames organization showed faith in him when he was struggling with injury woes for a few seasons - our top players are signed long term, so there is some certainty that our team will remain competitive If I'm not mistaken, points wise Turris has an edge. Likely another factor.

I have to say that I was pretty optimistic when we traded for Smith this summer because he's a starting goaltender, saw a lot of rubber in Phoenix, and I thought he had the potential to be even better behind our team. What I didn't expect was how good he's been for us - despite our team play at times so far this season. Kudos to you Mike Smith, and thank you for letting us all complain about other positions and players so far this year!
  7. Hey FF, ya, I was being facetious. Though I like Schlemko, I know there's no way Bart gets it done and I'm aware of the lack of picks we have as well. Even if we had the picks, I wouldn't be sweetening the pot for the 6D position with any of them. My Brouwer comment was equally facetious but I hit the wrong emoji - meant for it to be a wink! I do agree with you that Montreal would have interest in Backlund, and I'm glad you're on the don't trade Backlund bus now!
  8. I'm with you TD. I heard Schlemko has a broken hand now, and Montreal is reeling... think they'd take a healthy Bart for Schlemko (broken hand and all?) I doubt it, but I still like Schlemko and think he's be a decent fit as 6D with Stone. Think Montreal would take Brouwer?

Just watched trelivings interview with Lebrun on TSN. He talked about Vegas drafting more goalies than they can use, and that's where a deal could be made. Coincides with steinburgs assessment, and as far as I'm concerned, treliving is rightfully playing hardball with GMs asking for too much in a trade before the expansion draft. Again, it may be just a front, but remember - treliving can work out a deal with New York *or* Vegas for Antii Rantaa (for example). If he doesn't like New York's price, he asks Vegas if they're having a sale on the same player! Lol

I don't think Elliott would sign with us again if we grab another starter. He's been in a tandem situation for so long in his career, and his goal is to be a true #1 starter. I was talking to his dad earlier this season and he was saying how Elliott's always been underestimated and he's learned to fight for everything he gets. His fight is looking fantastic right now, and pretty much what we wanted at the start of the season. Now, a GMs due diligence is to look at the goalie market for options (Mrazek is an interesting consideration if available), however, I'd be happy if we re-signed both Elliott and Johnson. Johnson's game tails off when he starts too many games in a row, but man is he lights-out when he sits on the bench a few games and goes in a little cold. That's what you want from a backup, the ability to win some games! Not to mention that he does have the capacity to run with it for a few games if our other goalie is faltering. With the backups we've had over the years, I'm holding onto Johnson, and I don't think he'll be all that expensive to retain.
  11. Don't think I was being dramatic at all. In fact, I raved about Brodie's ability in my first paragraph. I didn't say the sky was falling with Brodie's game, I was simply providing a counter-argument to what JTech said about left/right side isn't a big issue. As a long time defenceman yourself, I'm sure you feel more comfortable on one side versus the other. That's all I was saying in my post - no drama - but "side does matter"
  12. I kindly disagree. When Gio went down with injury, Brodie stepped up much like the rest of the D corps at the time, and we made the playoffs. Brodie was a tank without Gio by his side. Furthermore, I even recall the media debating whether it was Gio elevating Brodie's game, or vice-versa. Additionally, I'm a left handed shot who's played right D my whole life. While I'm no NHL caliber player, I struggle playing the left side so much - my angles aren't as sharp, my stick defends towards the boards instead of the middle of the ice, etc. I would argue that switching sides is a huge adjustment, and Brodie has had to do it at the NHL level.
  13. If my wife sends me out to get bread, and they don't have any, is it my fault? Translation: BT can't trade for someone who's not available, or who would cost us assets we couldn't afford to lose. BT has done a remarkable job for this franchise given what's been available at the time, and when you consider the kind of money that's being thrown at player contracts. - Signing Mony and Johnny for under $7mil - amazing - Nabbing Hamilton from Boston - incredible - Grabbing Elliott, who was stellar for the Blues in the recent playoffs, and on an expiring contract ... instead of Bishop who was looking for a big pay day (and could still be an option to us when his contract expires this year) - brilliant - Chad Johnson? Wow. - Not picking up Lucic for big money, thank the lord! - The assets he got back for Kris Russell, Glencross... Sure, I've disagreed with some moves like Brouwer and our coach, but given what his options were at the time? So what if he picked up the RC cola when Coke wasn't available. He's still gotta design a roster that improves upon previous years, and keep important pieces locked down, and I think he's done a tremendous job at doing just that. My my beef is with the coach. The doom and gloom look is back behind the bench and I think it's resonating with the players.

I also want to add that I like that BT didn't allow Rutherford to corner him with Fleury. In fact, I'm excited to see how this Penguins goaltending fiasco is going to play out this season and with the expansion draft since Rutherford gambled big time.

I'm pretty happy with the draft and Elliott pickup. I said in an earlier post that Treliving may be trying to pick up a goalie on a one year term so that we're sitting pretty once again at the expansion draft with options in goal. I really like the way BT operates. That said, I do think Reimer would round out an excellent tandem for us at a similar cap hit... Though, I wonder about how Elliott would respond to once again being in a 1a / 1b situation. Last season Hiller never got over the flames re-signing Ramo... Wow. Fun times in flame land! And JJ is feeling somewhat "happy" with the goaltending too!

Matchsticks and Gasoline actually put together a nice comparison of most of the available goalies here: http://www.matchsticksandgasoline.com/2016/6/24/12022524/flames-james-reimer-marc-andre-fleury-jaroslav-halak-jonathan-bernier

I don't think Elliott is available (I've said that in previous post, re: Hitchcock's last year behind the bench, going for cup, etc). But I heard on the radio this morning speculation that Elliott is pretty disgruntled with the way he's been handled in St. Louis. If he's on his way out, a salary of $2.5mil this season, UFA next, I'd target him for sure. You know St. Louis can't take much back in salary, so could be those 2nd round picks trade scenario.

Heard about us offering pick 35 to ANA for Andersen, and thought about that Dallas pick for Russell that could've been a 1st at 25th overall... then remembered ANA would never deal Andersen to a divisional opponent.

Hey JJ, perhaps the path to happiness begins with getting better goaltending this year than we had last year. And hopefully we already have that bona fide, lights-out starter making his way up the ranks JTech, I like the way you think. Maybe there's a deal to be made with Vegas to pry Brossoit out of there and trade him to us

Interesting. I'm wondering if BT is thinking further ahead than we are. Yes we need a goalie for the upcoming season, and perhaps, since certain GMs want to play hard ball - ahem, Rutherford - maybe Bishop, having 1 year remaining on his contract, is exactly what he's looking for. We get to negotiate with Bishop during the season for his next contract, and if it doesn't play out, BT can revisit Rutherford when he has 10 days to decide what to do about his Fleury and Murray situation. Talk about putting a guy in a corner... Brian Elliott may also be available at the end of next season - I'm not sure her re-signs with St. Louis splitting duties with Jake Allen. Then again, Vancouver will be in our boat at the end of next season as well - Miller is UFA and Markstrom RFA, so Rutherford could have an opportunity to pit us against each other for Fleury. Thanks to expansion, it's going to be a crazy those 10 days at the end of the season, and hopefully a pretty active season leading up to (and on) TDL day. Frank Seravalli Verified account ‏@frank_seravalli Treliving says it's a balancing act of timing and acquisition cost for goalies on move w/ expansion draft. Teams may wait til next deadline. https://twitter.com/frank_seravalli/status/746003415763927040?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw Additionally, maybe BT is looking for Bishop in a package deal. We know TB has to re-up quite a few RFAs and they have potential cap space issues (Stamkos). Maybe someone with a contract on our end, or someone that wouldn't draw as much salary looks attractive to Stevie Y (Bouma, Jooris, maybe even Raymond @ $2.2?). Just had a look at Wideman's salary. Unfortunately it looks like it was back-loaded, so, while his cap hit is $5.25, his actual salary is $6mil. Doesn't help the cause.

Can Reimer be a number 1 go to guy for the lion's share of games in a season? I think he has the tools, compete, and personality that would be a fit here, but I am concerned about the lack of games played per season and his injury history (concussions). But when I compare him to the goalies out there: Ramo - Coming off a big injury, and we already know how he plays. I believe he's capable of more, but needs to tune his game and aim for consistency night in and night out. I also think Reimer can be had for less than (or equal to) Ramo's previous salary. Reimer today > Ramo of yesterday Fleury - had concussions as well (that's how he lost the starter job to Murray), he'll cost more than Reimer, and their numbers are pretty even. Unless there's a contract going back to Pittsburgh (wideman, or otherwise), Reimer gets my vote. Bishop - I think Bishop > Reimer, but Bishop also has injury history that knocked him out of the past 2 playoffs... and his salary is high, and he's a UFA at the end of this season... so, like above, unless a contract is going the other way, Reimer > Bishop Bobrovsky - Injury history yet again, and I wouldn't even touch that $7.5mil cap hit for the next 3 years. Not even with a contract going the other way. Reimer > Bob Howard - Sorry, I don't like his game, and his stats are going the wrong direction as well the past few years. I see him as a goalie on his way out, so I don't even consider him. Elliott - I don't think St. Louis moves him. They kept Hitchcock for one more year, and I don't think they're going to deal away Elliott despite that he'll be a UFA. I think they're going for it and keeping their goalies in Hitch's final year coaching. Vasilevsky, Murray, Korpisalo, Pickard... I don't think these guys are going anywhere. That's my 2 cents.

Here's a list of 2017 UFA Goalies (that make a minimum of $1m) so we can see which teams may have a need for a Goalie next offseason. Of course, some can and will be re-signed by their respective teams. http://www.hockeybuzz.com/cap-central/freeagents.php?team=all&type=UFA&year=2017&pos=G Miller, Ryan VAN G UFA 6,000,000 Bishop, Ben TB G UFA 5,950,000 Pavelec, Ondrej WIN G UFA 4,750,000 Bernier, Jonathan TOR G UFA 4,150,000 Mason, Steve PHI G UFA 4,100,000 Elliott, Brian STL G UFA 2,700,000 Greiss, Thomas NYI G UFA 2,000,000 Neuvirth, Michal PHI G UFA 1,750,000 Markstrom, Jacob VAN G UFA 1,600,000 Berra, Reto COL G UFA 1,500,000 Both of Vancouver's goalies are in this list, and there's already talk that Miller may want out. So, a potential starting goalie vacancy with Vancouver if they don't believe Markstrom is ready. Winnipeg already has Hutchinson and Hellebuyck, methinks Pavalec is looking for a new team.

Agreed. I'm liking the way BT is running the team thus far. Doesn't seem to make impulse or rash decisions, and is content to take the time he needs to evaluate.
