Not true, it's about both.   Also, the affect of overplaying is clearly cumulative when you look at playoff performance.  It's not just about oh, well he's had a few days off, so it's like the season just started for him.

If you play a goalie 81 games in a row, and then there's a 3 day break in the schedule, by this logic, he would be fresh.

Fresh or not, he's overplayed and less likely to be effective in the playoffs, as shown countless times in this thread when doing analysis of goalie playoff performances relative to number of regular season games played.

We go through this every year an we keep running into the same logic stumbling blocks.  Said goalie didn't play hockey yesterday, so said goalie is therefore "fresh".   We are not understanding what being "overplayed" is.

Also, yes, it is about getting Lack starts too.   And I'm not just saying that to invite the obvious ensuing play on words (ok, I sort of am).   But Pittsburgh would have two less cups if Pittsburgh didn't manage to have two goalies ready for the playoffs.  And that process started early in the season.   Not a couple games before the playoffs.

When there are b/b games or a heavy schedule like we have late Dec. Lack will get a lot of games. Right now when getting some points to make up for 1s you might lose later a rested  Smith is our best bet. I'd rather we are the 1s with points in our pocket rather than the 1s playing catch up.

Do you realize how silly that high lighted comment is? C'mon, you know that isn't happening. Doh!

Lack has never been more than a b/u so don't pretend he'll steal the starting spot (Neither will the kids in the AHL).

We need "W"s & until Smith can't deliver he's the goalie of choice. Lack (& maybe 1 of those future goalies that could displace him) are the mop up crew in games where we figure we can win without Smith as the last line of defense.

Disagree. They are a talented up and coming team. Too many teams are underestimating them. They just manhandled the Oilers tonight.

After watching the 'Canes/Jets I'm not going to underestimate Carolina. Go with Smith to out duel Darling.

To be honest the "Canes scare the heck out of me. This early they don't look great but when you watch them you gain respect.

  3. LV put Calvin Pickard on waivers. 1 year @ 1.0 then RFA.

I figure he's probably a better backup/safety net than Lack.

Best case scenario we lose Lack to waivers, Worst case we have a 3rd NHL  experienced goalie in the minors if needed.

It's pretty cool BT convinced him to come play on a Canadian team, not sure teams were so adamant not to sign him considering the price he came in at. I thought Oilers were astute in signing Jussi Jokinen for $1M but getting a living legend at the same price is a steal. Not sure if this solves our offensive question marks but it does give us more depth up front no matter how you look at it. I could see him playing on every line to be honest throughout the season

C'mon, the guy is 45 regardless of being in great shape. Don't expect him to play every shift on every line.

I wouldn't be surprised if he's used in different combinations to kick start different lines though.

Hats off to BT...again. This guy works his tail off, not a bad off season with resigning Bennett, Stone, Versteeg, Lazar, drafting Valimaki and acquiring/signing Hamonic and Jagr. He's proven his work ethic and savvy overtime. Teams must be wondering how they missed out on Jagr for a cool $1M plus bonuses. You have to wonder what guys like Iginla are thinking right now...

I was happy with adding Hamonic & the low price of re-signing Bennett & Versteeg. Valimaki fell to us so that really doesn't count.

The Lazar re-up is low risk but I'm concerned about the Stone contract (3.5 x 3 for a 5th D ?) as he's just insurance should Gio regress.

But this great deal on Jagr gets him another + in my book.

This is getting away from arena talk but, Modern "art" is so troll.  In fact, I used to like it.  I remember visiting Tate Modern in London, UK in 2010 to take in Ai Weiwei's masterpiece.  Sunflower Seeds.

    T13408_9.jpg

I have since realized, Modern art is just a part of a larger Leftist agenda to socially appropriate the inappropriate.  Up is down.  Left is right.  Men are women.  That kind of stuff.  Tate Modern is the cesspool of this movement. "Art", if you can even call it that.

Luckily, I was able to see some real art of Sunflowers in London thanks to Van Gogh at the National Gallery.

Unfortunately, Modern art has spread to the West and our Mayor is buying then like hot cakes.  Giant Blue Ring.  Stones on Wooden Pillars.  Chinook Arc.

I'm from "Sunflower Seed Country". Grew up eating "spits".

A Sunflower Festival every year. :) Even have a huge copy of Van Gogh's "Sunflowers" in the park.

Biggest waste I remember is the Canadian government buying "Voice of Fire" for 1.8 million. 3 freaking vertical stripes! Then they hung it upside down.

It wasn't even excusable as supporting Canadian artists as it was done by an American.

  7. Years ago with Jets 1.0 we had fundraisers but it was too little too late. Maybe token shares for the public will show the interest. I wouldn't count on a return worth mentioning but more see it as something like people buying a tile with their name on it on the entrance wall to show their support.

For Jets 2.0 Chipman built MTS Center & waited patiently to buy an NHL team. I remember the governments threw in some $s & tax breaks but think he paid the majority. When he had the chance to buy the Thrashers (originally thought it was the 'Yotes) & needed to expand the arena more tax breaks & $s in the form of low interest loans came into play. End result has TN owning the place so reaping all concession $s along with concert revenue. In a small market that was what did in the original Jets as they paid rent but got only a portion of the gate with nada from over priced beer/hot dogs/parking or even the programs sold in the lobby.

As a result there is construction in the downtown (some done by TN). Even that has tax breaks & concessions like a lot of lottery machines where TN keeps a much higher % of the take than the bars/restaurants do.

As far as rejuvenating downtown on game or concert nights there is a higher police pressence to make us feel safe so that is an added cost for now. But when the high end buildings are completed hopefully there are more people around day & night. It won't get rid of the gang bangers & panhandlers but will probably move them to a different area.

    ************************************************************************************************

& yeah Carty, governments do like to toss money @ artsy things that few see. We have the white elephant known as the Museum of Human Rights built & supported by only tax $s from all levels of government. It's a sink hole for taxes that was supposed to be a tourist destination. The inflated visitor #s are mostly free passes & they even count leaving the main area to check the gift shop & re-entering as 3 visits. :(

There is no parking near Rogers. I did park the trailet inside the old Nassau Colleseum where no one will find it. I think a heard a couple of muffled Canuck fans still inside but left it locked without investigation.

I remember leaving a trailer full on Canuckleheads in the parking lot in Phoenix a few years back.

But maybe we should just exile Nenshi, King and Bettman to Vancouver instead..

I got a  out of it as well. It was probably my cousin out in Leaf land that put it up but not positive.

Put those 3 is a cage match with McGratton as ref. After everyone beats the Gnome to a pulp let Nenshi & King battle to the end. Who wins doesn't matter but it would be fun to watch & ticket sales/tv rights go to the arena fund. Fans like me across Canada & elsewhere (a shout out to Germany) would probably watch on PPV. ;)

The judges (all Calgary residents & Flames fans) have a sober discussion weighing benifits vs. their tax bill (the drinks come later) to decide location, $s alloted & the % split between the city & team as they as most effected.

I really can't give an opinion as it's not my taxes involved.

I googled who is running for mayor & council but really can't comment on them as I don't live there.

I did look @ wards 1 & 2 to see that both have gals that could likely be hostesses on the bandwagon running. Something for DD to look into. ;)

  10. As everyone is probably aware my choice for this year was a Mason/Grubauer tandem but unfortunately that was not to be.

I was never on the MAF wagon & was luke warm @ best with Smith.

The strange thing is as I talk to people & read various articles about Smith in Calgary the more faith I'm starting to have in him.

I was talking to my niece's husband on Sunday. He's a goalie & a Habs fan (I forgave him as he is a good guy) & talk turned to improved teams so we taked Jets getting Mason (we both live in the "Peg afterall) & he mentioned Smith with that Calgary D. We tend to discuss rather than argue so I let him make his points why that was a great combination & I had no rebutal. There's a dang good chance this works if our forwards hold up their part of the bargain.

Exactly the way I view it.

I like what redfire is saying about Smith yelling at guys.

    I want that emotion.

    "You humiliated me out there"....boo-freaking-hoo.

    Don't come back for seconds...

If a goalie isn't verbally abusive on his D, he probably isn't doing his job. lol.

Send the entire D corps for Sensitivity Training in reverse. Don't get all sensitive because you boardinged up.

Ahhh, if only the world worked that way again, lol.

I doubt it'll be the D corps he'll be yelling at if he's left hung out to dry by a bone headed play. I trust them but a lot of our forwards have to learn that not only those designated as defense on the game roster should play defense.

I think our biggest goalie problem last year was confidence. I still believe Elliott was a good accusation and is a great goalie. But it wasn't till he started getting confident in our Defense and his own abilities later in the season did he show his capabilities. In the playoffs his confidence was shattered after the second game.

I have watched Arizona play quite a bit the last 2 years probably 3rd of teams watched behind Calgary and Edm. Lack of Confidence in his own abilities was NOT something Smith portrayed. Lack of confidence in his defense in front of him YES. His age and his demeanor will work in the flames favor. As I said earlier in this thread.

If you screw up your duties in front of Smith. " No longer are you going to get that sympathy hug from Geo or that little Time Out from GG, You are going to be yelled at so the whole stadium will hear it".

I wish I could believe the high lighted as IMO the Flyers down graded big time going from Mason to Elliott.

I'm another that isn't all that confident in the Smith/Lack pairing but figure they are =/> last year's experiment. I hope the improved D makes adequate goalies out of both.

Lol.. Timmy is a free agent and likely cheap.. anyone for this former 1st round pick?

Tim Carl Erixon (born 24 February 1991) is a Swedish professional ice hockey defenseman who is currently a free agent.

Don't hold back.. tell us what you think.....

Sign him! 2 way @ league minimum.

Then we flip him to the Canucks for their 2nd rounder.

    -_-

  14. Seems the Rags want to trade Nick Holden so they can add another center. They also only have about 0.5 in cap space.

I think we can help them by giving them Freddie Hamilton (0.6125 x 1) for Holden (1.65 x 1) to add further to our D if they throw in a 3rd in 2018.

Sometimes I'm so good hearted I surprise myself. :)

BTW, it was saved until my previous computer died. When I got the new 1 I should have saved it again but us oldies have memory lapses.

What was this about? I forgot. :)

My general thoughts here, when reflecting on this current thread:   I think expectations may be a tad too high.

We made some upgrades to D, on paper at least.   But I feel like the mood on here is best-case scenario.  And maybe it should be.   But it definitely is that.

    Yes & no.

We upgraded our D in a big way, changed the nameplates @ goalie (I'm still not sure if for better but we know what we had last year didn't work) but @ forward basically stood pat.

Of the 3 positions the only 1 I feel really secure about is defense.

But a possitive attitude is 1/2 the battle. If the players are as confident as we are we're good.

Love the sig ff, oldskool, lol.

I'm almost as interested to see the Isles D without Hamonic as I am the Flames with.

If I were Garth Snow, I'd have said no.

    That's my thinking. I get, say, 24th oa. and 2 55ths.

That might sound like 3 shots, but the dice is loaded.

If we tank, Snow gambled and won. But he's got the low odds.

Conversely, odds aren't great he gets the return for Hamonic.

Whom I believe clearly makes us better, BT obviously kept on top of Hamonic wanting to go West.

When the news broke, I'm sure we were all stunned.

That's very, very impressive managing imo. "Tireless" comes to mind.

Hamonic news had dissipated. Guessing BT never let it go.

He makes us a lot better, he is at worst a good 3 that brings the kinda D we lack.

Pretty sure everyone's jaw dropped to "woah Calgary holy um, peaches"?

Hamonic would have been sought after by many teams, bang, calgary.

    Sweet. Solid add.

Thanks. Somehow my old sig disappeared so I hunted around a bit & found this. LCB was always my favorite line.

Great explanation of Hamonic vs. Larsson. You put it better than I'd have done. As you can tell from my posts I consider the trade for Hamonic the best move any GM made over the off season.

I view hamonic as a similar player to larsson, and he had no problems adjusting to the western conference. I think hamonic is a little less physical then larsson but thats ok he doesnt need to be that presence on the back end. I mean you can temper expectations all you want but the additions of hamonic and stone, plus I would assume on kulak, make this D corp better. I think the problem with the previous D corp was not the players, but they didnt mesh well together, the system was much different under sutter, and our forward group was terrible in terms of centers. Phaneuf and Jbo also has their supposed clashing with reference to both being top D men, it just wasent a good situation.

Its totally possible we may see different pairings, ie brodie with hamilton or who knows hammy with hamonic, does hammy squared work for that?  Who knows at this point but the sum of the parts is much better the previous group, and the team is much different then before. Its important to have forwards that can help down low, and get the puck out of the zone. I dont think its possible for this D corp to be any worse then very good.

    Then you'll be surprised.

Who would of thunk that forcing 4 LHS LD together wouldn't produce optimal results?  As much as there's merits to dampen expectations based on this example, I feel this example better serves the LD/RD argument.

This time around, we have 2 LHS 2 RHS and Brodie can switch sides effectively.  That, plus Stone as insurance if Hamonic falters.  I just can't see how our D doesn't live up to expectations.

Oh, and Smith in G is going to help make our D look better.  Good goalies always do that.

He's the last 1 I worry about faltering. Last year was a stress filled 1 for him due to health concerns in his immediate family. We've cut other players slack under similar circumstances.

I say its not coincidence Elliot's resurgence just happened to coincide with Stones and Bartkowski's arrival (otherwise known as Wideman's removal). The defense was more able to cover up his deficiency.. Smith did it with basically 1 good defenseman in front of him ...1

Mason should have had way superior stats to both last year , Philly has a decent defense..  but his shortcomings showed up

Elliott told the Philly media that his bad start was a combination of a new team, no familiarity with his defense & a new baby in the house. He said it was after him wife told him to concentrate on hockey rather than rushing home to help with the baby that he was able to turn it around. No mention of Calgary changing D-men.

BTW, the Flyers defense wasn't that good last year. What helped a lot is they do play a good team defense.

Seeing what Steve Mason signed for today, I definetly would have preferred the flames go that route and save the assets rather than trading for smith. Pretty had to argue smith is an upgrade over Mason and It's marginal at best. One was free and one the Flames gave up a lot for in trade.

    Too bad.

    Totally agree.

Nashville getting Emilin (4.1 x 1) for a 3rd in 2018 looks pretty good too. An already great top 4 became an even better top 5.
