  1. Marc-Andre Fleury's stats in his first 2 seasons in the NHL

    2003-2004 PENGUINS 21 4 14 2 - 1 70 675 .896 3.64 1,154 2005-2006 PENGUINS 50 13 27 - 6 1 152 1,485 .898 3.25 2,809

Both seasons under .900 save % so I guess he is not a NHL caliber goalie either. Yes Berra has let in his fair share of weak goals but he also has made his fair share of amazing saves that should have went in. Every goalie in this league or any league let's in weak goals. His save % is barely under .900 and even at his age he is still a rookie to NA hockey some European goalies can come right over and thrive and some take a little longer. Say what you will about Calgary's goal tending but coming into this year everybody thought that it was terrible and that we were going to be the laughing stock of the league but Ramo and Berra have proven they are capable of keeping games close and giving us a chance.

My problem is comparing any goalie to MAF as if he's a great goalie.

  2. Talk about a baptism by fire for Berra.  You get your first NHL start against the defending champs.  Not sure this was the best game for him to start but it is what it is.  I guess we'll get to see how well he performs under pressure.  Personally I thought we would have seen him start the Minnesota game.

The only good thing  about this besides DDs comment about testing his resolve is that the Hawks have no book & only play in other leagues to guess his tendancies.

    Just a sidenote.

In that 5-1 blowout over Wpg. neither Toews nor Kane registered a point. We really need to watch for their secondary scorers too.

  3. Gotta disagree, Bernier for example went for a 4th, think we could have afforded that.  Added, there were many decent (by decent I mean better than J Mac) established Goalies in FA and many went cheap this year.

Actually Jonathon Bernier's RFA rights went for Matt Frattin, Ben Scrivens & a 2nd in either 2014 or 2015.

  4. I do agree, there were goals last night I think jmac would have had and he deserves credit for points we have gotten. The mistakes on defense lat night were just magnified with ramo there.

My main point all along has just been if you are in a position to develop players then develop them. Jmac should be playing 1 in 5 games. If youre going to sit ramo or berra or whoever on the bench in favor of a guy whos short term, then you may as well just go sign bryzgalov and let berra and ramo fight it out in the ahl this year.

There are going to be more games like last night this year. The secret is out of the bag, the flames are going to work you hard and make you earn your 2 points. Riding jmac will probably raise us to a mid pack finish, get us a pick in the teens, but then where are we at the end of the year? Going into next year with a green goalie.

We are trying to develop players but the multitude of unproven goalies aren't the most important IMO. We have a pile of goalies that can get their shot @ it.

For now Monahan & Baertschi are in a winning atmosphere so if a career backup gives them a better chance to see that we try to win (as opposed to losing getting you more skilled wingers) it's worth more then pulling out all stops to make a 27 year old Ramo look good when we have 4 more unproven waiting.

If I recall correctly Ramo has an out to go home if not on the big club. If he goes we have others to replace him that don't have a record of NHL failure & make less.

  5. Haha, just checking.  :P

But in reality, hoping any player has a bad year, other than Kessel, or all the Canucks, isn't nice.

Or all Pens except Crosby so he can be the face of TC while the others take care of business. :)

  6. I wonder if there would be an out clause in order for him to go back to the KHL if there were to be a mutual parting after a year.

I was thinking the same as I read this thread.

That would work out best for both parties if he can't transition to the NHL.

  7. I think that Berra could be a big surprise for the flames. Have you seen him at the World Cup??? :o

Berra in a tandem with Mac could be a good option!! Berra is the best goalie in Switzerland, at the moment. Conz is also good but he has not the size of a potential NHL goalie. The difference in their stats said not to much about their qualities. Berra plays in Biel, one of the teams that are normaly at the bottom and Conz plays in Fribourg the playoff finalist this year.

So i would give him a chance and maybe he is the flames future goaltender, we have not so much to lose, we have Mac too, so try!! B)

The plan is likely to give the top ranked 'tenders in the system a good look in camp & the exhibition games with MacDonald getting little play to see which emerges. If 1 runs with the opportunity he could earn a starting job as MacDonald seems there for more of a safety net.

If Kipper does decide to play out the last year of his contract as a Flame it would depend on his play as far as the # of starts goes. Even if he plays locked door style I figure the 1 that stepped up in camp/exhibition would be the designated door opener with Joey in reserve in Abby.

After all, the aim of being a sports team is to be as competitive as possible. :)
