  1. I guess you know about Lucic only getting a $10,000.00 fine for targetting Mathieu Joseph, slashing him, nailing him when he didn't have the puck & then punching him in the head when he was lying on the ice. The rookie is 6'1:" & 173 pounds. Yeah, Lucic is a real tough guy.

The part that bugs me more is young Lemieux got a 2 game suspension for his 1 offense. Lucic is a repeat offender but gets a slap on the wrist of about 10 minutes pay @ his salary.

If there is a god, then McLellan will not be replaced by Q. If he is, then there is not god.

Quennelle has a contract that pays him $6 million a year until after the 2019-20 season. He can well afford to wait before he picks his next head coaching gig. Being used to winning on a team with good management the odds of him going to a team with constant drama are only slightly lower than him opting for Ottawa.

How long is enough time to see the Goalie coaching results are a failure?

I again ask is there even one success story from this guy? How long until someone says enough..? We have had many high end goalie prospects yet one by one they seem to struggle... then vanish

The successes are few and all from signings or trades...  George Johnson calls Singalet  a Guru.. I don't see any Guru at all. He must "talk a good game" and/or "work long hours"... Still don't see any success from this guy.

Like the skaters of this generation the young goalies are different from the old guard. i see it over & over @ all positions where players that are driven to be the best shake off the coddling of their developement years (I think it was Tim Hunter who said these days coachs need to be as much babysitter as coach) & start working with outside experts. For skaters is guys like Adam Oates & Gary Roberts while the goaltending fraterity has their own version.

The skills on these modern kids are there as they have passed on normal childhoods to live for only hockey since they were 5. What is missing is the expertise to fine tune those skills. Many of these outside experts are truely the "gurus" as with so many you see a huge turnaround when players commit to them. Even during the season they are available if their client feels the need to talk to them.

It's too late for them to help the old guard like Smith but for young players @ any position working with them is walking the talk.

But Armia is so vanilla with a low ceiling. Worse than Ferland and lacks similar dynamics.  This is a trade for a second round pick.  Which is good but Bennett is more valuable than a second.

I doubt you.ve watched him a lot. I have every game since he made the NHL until he was traded (180 regular season & 13 in the playoffs. He just keeps getting better too.

I was actually showing greed by asking for a 2nd on top of Armia.

Bergervin is 1 of the few GMs I could think of to overpay like my ask involves.

  5. I'd try offering Bennett to center hungry Montreal for Armia & 1 of their 2 picks (the other came from the BJs). Bergervin would likely jump @ the chance to trade for a player that was actually drafted as a center. Playing in Montreal we don't have to worry SB breaks out & comes back to haunt the Flames.

Contracts are close (Armia is 0.1 less) & both RFA after the season. Armia had 29 points in 79 vs Sam's 26 in 82 lasr season. Also better defensively IMO.

We have a lot of players that play RW but most also play other positions. A line of Tkachuk/Backlund/Armia would be capable in both a shutdown & scoring role.

Also, whichever 2nd rounder we get as icing on the cake replaces the 1 we traded as part of the Hamonic deal. Another bullet in the gun for trade purposes or to refill the pipeline.

Friedman rumour mongering again, mentioned today in 31 thoughts, ANA, MTL, TB, PHI and MTL as teams with interest in Bennett

He said those were teams that had inquired about him over the years. Kicking the tires in the past does not = a trade rumor.

So MTL inquired twice? You list them twice.

I wonder how much of an effect the smaller chest protectors are having on guys like Smith, he doesn't seem quite comfortable with shots between the body and his arm.

I saw Elliott is taking about the new chest protector having little padding on the arms. Every shot seems to leave a bruise & feels like no padding in the arm area. If you don't get the shot in the chest, stop it with the blocker or catch it you hurt a lot.

It would be quite interesting to see what McDavid would do with 4 to 8 minutes a game and lousy line mates. I think the theory would be more about finding the right complimentary players, playing with good play makers and other scorers frees up space an time for all of them. If everyone concentrated on shutting down McDavid only on a line it could be done but you won't shut the entire line down. This happens in playoff hockey all the time.

Except in the playoffs when you concentrate on 1 player the other 2 on the line can & will hurt you. Edmonton has McDavid (& without him his wingers become rather average) & Draisaitl (who's wingers are not exactly world beaters on their own.

Shutting down McDavid as the main goal when Draisaitl was on his wing allowed the German to feast but since the Oilers think they have 2 world class centers that can each drive a line they are split up.

If you totally shut down McDavid he can't even set up the others on his line making them useless.

I don't think he will ever become more than that.  Okay, maybe the points, since he has passed that every year.

I just don't see the skills oozing out, ready to break out.

    Hard work, yes.

But what do I know.  :D

If you watch Lowry (I do a lot. He's 1 of my favorite Jets) you'd be dang happy with that. The guy is great @ shutdown, can (& does) stand up for teamates, takes regular shifts & other teams can't ignore he's involved in the offence.

Only place Bennett is better is in points while Lowry prevents goals by other teams big gunners. A saved goal = a scored goal IMO as it's 1 you don't have to get back.

So let me ask you the obvious question... Who does he deserve to play up higher in the LW roster??

Are you going to demote JH or Tkachuk below him, so Bennett can get more time or better linemates?

The obvious answer is 3rd or 4th line minutes is where he has played himself to.

Exactly. You can't rejig the team to try to salvage 1 player no matter how much some fans love him.

I had high hopes when he was drafted but now would be extatic if we could mold him into an Adam Lowry type. Great @ shutdown but still capable of chipping in 20+ points.

It's going to take a good 10-20 games to find ourselves.

Adding Neal, Lindholm, Ryan, Hanafin, Czarnik, new coach.

    That's a lot of change.

Bennett might be better than most of them, guess we'll find out.

It better not. 10-20 bad/inconsistant games even early in the season can leave teams on the outside come playoff time.

Both McElhinney and Pickard on waivers. I guess we will see how much faith Treliving has in Rittich. We will see if he makes a claim.

Personally I think either is an upgrade.

    True,

Personally I prefer the Flames take Pickard as a 35 year old McElhinney backing up 36 year old Smith doesn't make me feel really secure.

Goalies are tricky in general. To your point how long do you wait on a goalie to turn into an NHL starter? You could wait 8-10 years and he never turns out. At a certain point you have to move on.

I am starting to worry that Rittich is a AAAA player, meaning that he might be too good for the AHL, but he doesn't quite have what it takes to be a full time NHLer.

I have never been a huge fan of Gillies, he has been prone to these lapses since he was drafted and he just hasn't figured out how to stay focused from the beginning of the game till the end.

The bolded is true. In the Jets exhibition win over the Wild last night Brossoit looked a more than capable backup while I was expecting him to be the tire fire he was with the Oilers. It could be that adopting Helle's off season regimen & working with his guru turned things around. He probably never put as much into an off season before but seeing what it did for his pal Helle & wanting to salvage his career would be good incentives. Sure 1/2 the team he was facing was more Ohio than Minny but the D in front of him was 50% AHL Moose or juniors. (on that it was cool to see Big Buff paired with the even bigger Stanley. @ 6'5" & 6'7" when they were side by side on the blueline it looked like they could touch sticks.)

You see the same thing on players that want to be the best. I've mentioned Scheifele & Wheeler before but Laine & Dano both came to camp 14 pounds lighter & both looked better & faster for it. Both credit asking Scheifele questions & trying to follow suit to some degree.

On the Flames Gio is said to be a workout freak in the vein of Brindamour. If only this rubbed off on the other players.

These days hockey is a year round job as the 1s driven to be #1 take a week off @ most. It's a far cry from the days of Phil Espisito where summer was for partying & you played yourself into shape in training camp. If you want the bigger cheques you work 365 days a year. You can relax when your career ends with a fat bank account.

I agree. In the AHL they went with a 1a/1b load so he can handle a few extra games.

Last year i thought that was an error / big mistake by the team, when Rittich looked like he could take more games and played solid, they spread it out too thin and killed his rhythm.

I think a goalie can let in let in more than 3 or 4 or 5 goals and still look impressive.

Some of those losses, Rittich looked that way, while others, most notably the later part of the year.

I know Kipper could take more workload, but I feel like some more rest would allow backup to get comfy, while keeping Kipper fresh. We failed then and I think we’re doing that now.

The Flames scored @ a 2.66 rate so no. If the goalie allows more desperation to score arises. That leads to mistakes/turnovers that turn into even more GA. When your GF/GA is -30 that is not a good thing.

Kipper loved the workload but I always felt if we'd played the backup a bit more the team wouldn't have been gripping their sticks as tight in fear of making a defensive mistake & played more like they did when they trusted Kipper to bail them out.

You and everyone else probably see it as a waste but I’d like to see them try him with Lindholm because I see their skills matching, and if Lindholm is a Backlund the 2nd, then it could help Bennett.

I know the organization doesn’t really see it that way and see the new toys in the Top6. I just think we need to get Bennett someone who passes so that he can realize he doesn’t need to do it himself. It could develop his game.

Understand many won’t agree. I just think developing Bennett’s game could be a key to the success (depth scoring).

Why keep altering things to keep trying to salvage something from Bennett?

If the team is better using players in different combos do it.

I was as pleased to get him in the draft as anyone but he's on his 2nd contract & entering his 4th full season (I won't count burning 1 contract year for 1 game & playoffs) but hasn't done anything to merit going all out to improve him especially if it costs overall. Unless he suddenly breaks out on his own we might as well admit he hasn't lived up to being what we thought we'd drafted. Without putting much thought into it there are easily 6 players taken after him I'd sooner have.

I'd give it to the TDL (or less) & then probably try to get something for him in trade.

It could be the Flames were too gung-ho expecting immediate impact but IMO he would have been better served with more time to mature in junior. There wasn't the Monahan reason of nothing gained by playing on a poor team as Kingston was a good team. But that's hindsight so regardless of where blame lies whats done is done & we have a lesser player than expected. From expected top 6 to hoped for bottom 6 depth is 1 heck of a drop.Save the TLC for players that still have a higher ceiling within reach.

Also most of our top prospects have graduated, at least the ones who were destined for NHL. Only a few of our most promising recent picks are still on the farm.

They have the Jets ranked 28 for probably the same reason even the Wpg. has AHL Rookie of the Year Niku.

I take these rankings as a few peoples opinion based largely on stats as I'm sure they only watch small doses or high light clips of those hundreds or thousands of AHLers & prospects playing around the world in many leagues.

  17. I'd love to have the Rinne/Saros situation Nashville is fortunate to have happening. No such luck. but few teams can claim to have something like that. In fact, none come to mind.

There look to be 2 options that both will have support.

1 is a 30ish but proven big $ goalie like Bob, Schneider or Price that will cost us big in players/prospects/picks & mess with our cap severely.

The other is a stopgap like we've used in the past. We could try to snag 26 year old Pickard from the TML & hope he's just a late bloomer or go with a former starter who is now a UFA @ no cost. I'd offer Mason a PTO & hope last years streak of injuries were just bad luck. If he outplays the AHLers in camp offer a $1 x 1 contract to stay in the league & if healed earn a job for next year. @ 30 he might still have the good years the Jets were hoping for left. To me it felt like last year was just that ultimate storm where he couldn't stay healthy but when he finally could Helle was cemented as starter. If you just look @ his #s in the limited games he played they are horrible due to a rotten start. They were much better in the few games he got into later. (His trade to the Habs was the #s game due to cap. Like BT over his tenure Chevy took a chance assuming Helle wasn't ready yet but in this case he got lucky.) Little cost but could be high reward since if he can refind his game he could buy a few more years for BT to find the "goalie of the future" by replacing Smith for a few years.

I recall reading something recently that said the 2 sides had " touched base ".   ..Id imagine anything deeper will happen once the RFA 's are looked after

    Thanks phoenix & td.

I spot check the Herald but have seen nothing. I figured other media in Calgary might have talked about it.

We have Illegal Curve out here which is an accredited radio show (they have the freebies in the press box & access during player/management availability) that is a private station/site devoted to all things Jets. They seem to have their finger on the teams pulse more than those that work for better known media. Run/owned by 4 young guys that started doing this as university students I pretty much trust them more than the talking heads & scribes. They do give links to those on site but balance with links to the media that covers the opponent. I never see idle speculation from them as they seem straight shooters.

I was hoping you had similar out there.

  19. I know BT is dealing with Hanifin & other current RFAs right now but I wonder about if he's devoted much time to starting negotiations with Tkachuk. IMO he's by far the most important of the pending RFAs in the next 2 years.

Add to that he has a need to find a goalie of the future unless he's really confident 1 of the current prospects (so little NHL experience) can fill the shoes of a starter within the next year or 2 as @ 36 Smith is a stopgap.

Chevy is doing the same balancing act in Wpg. with the current Trouba fiasco, a few other RFAs (some pending arbitration) while having to think of Laine & Connor as RFA next year while Captain Wheeler (straw that stirs the drink & settled Laine down after that unfortunate own net goal) & led all RWs in assists & 3rd in points.

Being an armchair GM is easy but with the # of balls the NHL 1s have in the air @ any time they have a tough job. We propose trades & offer opinions why they'd work but these guys deal with real people & personalities.

Oh boy. After reading your post above and TD's post regarding their limited cap space, I decided to go over there myself. Optimistic is not a word I would use to characterize their board. How can they be so cash strapped after shipping out all of those high picks!? They only have McDavid, Draisaitl, and RNH left. Lucic is struggling, Puljujarvi and Slepyshev are not exactly super stars. That club looks to be in ruins.

McDavid is a truly great player, but he sure eats up a lot of cap space. Chicago made that work for a bit and Pittsburgh have done well with one player eating up that much. I would rather have more second tier players myself.

You need balance. For instance a Gaudreau/Monahan pairing comes in @ roughly = to McDavid's cap hit next season. If RNH is used on his wing that will be 18.5 so the Flames can add a 5,5 winger & come in cheaper than the Oiler 1st line even if they use a $1 million scrub on the other wing.

For contrast the Jets top line of Scheifele/Wheeler/Connor came in @ 13.5 after allowing for Connor's bonuses. That'll be the cap hit for McDavid & the scrub never mind RNH.

Add overpays like Lucic (who they mistakenly think will turn things around & become tradable) & they have no chance of adding a supporting cast.

After Pronger demanded out in 2006 & was quickly followed by the rest of the good players Lowe got desperate enough to try to buy loyalty from players. OSing Penner @ 10 times his salary started them down a road of overpayments. That was followed by throwing rookies into the fire for lack of players & handing out $6 million 2nd contracts. Instead of those high picks attracting UFAs wanting to play with those #1 picks they had to overpay even the desperate leftovers to go to Edmonton.

When you build a culture of losing being OK you reap what you sow. I figure Buffalo will find they have the same problem. Traded iler players talk about how different practices are with their new team. In Buffalo players like RoR talk about losing the will to play since the organization doesn't want to win either. Adding Dahlin won't turn around that culture.

Examples like that are why I'm adamant about not using the tank for future gain model. It's worked for Pittsburgh twice but they invented & then perfected it. That's rare so other teams are better off with maintaining a mindset of winning & expecting players to buy in.

  21. I decided to snoop on their board. The hopeless feeling I read is @ least as bad as when they realized Hall, Eberle, RNH & Schultz didn't = Gretzky, Kurri, Messier & Coffey.

They now have 1 superstar (Gretz couldn't do it alone in LA but had a better supporting cast than McDavid), Draisaitl & RNH without a supporting cast up front. The D is a bunch of decent 3/4s without a 1/2 in sight. A year ago Talbot was a good (not great) goalie but they rode him too hard & probably ruined him (like so many players before) unless he fnds people to work with him to salvage his career like Dubnyk did. Step 1:get away from that poison environment.

After seeing so many players ruined there I feel bad for their draft picks. The early 1s like Hall came in with stars in their eyes but now you see disappointment. Poor kids are thinking "why couldn't I have been picked #11 or 12 instead of 10.

I do..  its hindsight , and I dont believe for a moment he "forgot" to Lottery protect the pick.. it was part of the negotiation .I dont know if you watched the draft when that trade went down, it showed BT and Snow , both exhausted back at their tables.. it was a grind

Worst case, NYI get first and take Dahlin .. we essentially then traded a prospect (albeit a high profile one ) for an established, proven, top 4 Dman , who I still believe will show us better then he showed this year .

And again , still respecting the detail that he is a high profile prospect,  do we need more D prospects ??

Its no different than Burke essentially trading Seguin for Kessel.. he bet on his team , his team let him down in this case.

C'mon, top 3 protected wouldn't have been the breaker unless BT is very naive. Top 3 protected might cost a 3rd some other year with the 1st being postponed but with everyone in the hockey world knowing about Dahlin BT failed by not protecting it. Even safegaurding only for 1st over all should have been a given. (& I liked the trade otherwise. But I never expected the Flames to be a lotto team. BT is paid to protect against even what he hoped were slim chances of a lottery pick.)

Even in the trade for Stastny when there was no chance of the Jets missing the playoffs Chevy got top 3 protection.
