  1. Lucic? Nope. He was on a No Move contract. Can't waive. Can't trade without his permission.
  2. Oilers on pace for 0 points and 656 goals against.
  3. Can't fault the guy for looking up stats. He does a good job of picking through the weeds for dandelions. Can't say I spend that much time looking. So there's that. I do assume that the Flames are good at identifying targets. We have some good prospects and have already signed a couple of guys to AHL deals. They are already in NA.
  4. I think what you see is that the talent pool is all over the map for skill. Askarov looked like the best player in the KHL. This guy looks like a good player in a lesser league. Which is fine. I do think the Flames track these things, as every team does. They might not be at every game, but I am sure they track players. It's literally their job. As you recall, we signed Rittich from that league. He was old for a prospect, so likely had no better options. At the time, there would have been a path to the NHL. Maybe for an older guy, being offered a contract to play in Canada is good, but it's a big thing for a younger guy not drafted. What is the draw for him? Make $70k in Canada? Most of that goes to taxes and just living. Calgary ain't cheap.
  5. I was merely talking about how you could do it while losing less talent. If Rooney was on their radar, they needed to fix the radar. Signing him after losing Gaudreau looks like a panic move to sign anybody. And maybe that was the last straw for Tkachuk.
  6. I don't pretend to scout goalies anywhere in the world. I would imaging that we have scouts watching guys and keeping track of eligible players. We did do that before, right? Since we haven't done it, there is likely a reason for it that isn't easy to see by looking at Elite Prosects. Is he signed to 24/25? Is he just another Euro that has no intention of moving to NA and get a smallish paycheck? Canada not exactly being the cheapest place to move to out of the blue. My point is that it's hard to just sign guys because you want them. There has to be a track to real money. Has to be something you can offer that no other team offers.
  7. Had we traded Lucic, we wouldn't have signed Rooney. The cost tradeoff was equal. Would have been able to sign Kadri and have at least another C capable of playing on this team. Would a team have been willing to accept Lucic and he okay's the deal is another story. Lucic was a Sutter player, so BT may not have even gotten past the phone call to owners. I'm glad to have the discussion, but it seems kind of pointless. Was just reflecting on the trade. And I do like Kadri on this team. Shame we didn't get him from Toronto. Lost Brodie to FA anyway.
  8. I should say that BT did whatever he thought he could do. We got Lucic instead of buying out Neal, but he wasted millions on Neal in the first place. Lucic's contract was terrible. Couldn't be bought out. I liked what he did for the team in his recent years, but not his scoring. And not year one of his play. You want to sign Kadri? Fine, but make sure you don't have to pay sucker prices to make room. I even think you could have bought out Monahan with his permission. I think that is what the CBA suggested. Could be wrong. Anyway, it's done and so am I. We don't have the player, the coach or the GM. Good times, right?
  9. There were other ways around trading Monahan. It was an easy trade. Keeping him meant we traded someone else. Hindsight I guess, since I didn't love the trade. I think it's likely we loose this year's pick and have 2 next year. Anyway, what is done is done. Monahan without Gaudreau may not have worked.
  10. I won't pretend to say the current goalie coach is any good or not. Former goalie, current co-owner of a goalie consulting firm. I can't see NAS trading him, they have little else signed. He's a project for them and likely comes up as Saros gets older. Long term that is. They have a backup the same age as Saros and he was decent last season.
  11. Wolf is a success story in AHL development, so I don't know if we have to review that end. NHL coaching is undetermined. Don't know how much impact they are having. A good season from both goalies followed by a bad season. As far as goalie prospects, trading for another Wolf is problematic. Might get Askarov if the team wants to giove up on him. Why do teams really want to trade prospects? Usually only happens when they undervalue them and may want to include in a NHL trade. NJ isn't trading Daws. Levy isn't for sale. Most likely you end up making a play for a goalie that has to go through waivers. If they pass through, then the owner won't just trade them. That is the goalie that doesn't need much development. I'm just saying that Wolf's aren't growing on trees that are ripe for picking. It costs to make trades. Prospect for prospect doesn't happen much now. Teams have longer leashes on their own. I'm not saying we shouldn't just that the pipeline for all positions has to be kept in mind. For every Saros there are 5 Mason MacDonald's in the queue.
  12. I'm okay with Kadri, but I was annoyed that we had to send a 1st in the process. Should we not have been able to trade Lucic instead, even if the cost was similar? Then we have Monahan today and not a UFA that helped little and left for nothing. I know, it's speculating a trade that may not have happened, but we would have likely had a better result last season. Kadri is polarizing like E. Kane. Give me Kadri any day over Kane. I don't like the salary, but when the cap goes up, it won't mean as much.
  13. What does a successful goalie pipeline look like? You can't just draft guys and have them report to a Flames AHL camp and possibly play in the ECHL. You can look at undrafted players elsewhere and give them an opportunity to make $70k in the AHL, assuming they meet the requirements to play there. You can sign unsigned NCAA grads that choose not to sign with their drafting team or undrafted NCAA players coming out with no jobs. We can carry 4 goalies outside the NHL, and up to 3 in the NHL. We have the two NHL goalies, Wolf, Dansk, Murphy and Radomsky in the immediate pipeline plus Sergeyev and Yegorov playing in their respective leagues. It would have been ideal had we burned picks to get Cossa or Wallstedt or Askarov. No chance on Askarov without cost to trade up. One of the other two would have cost Coronato. None have yet to show the trajectory of Wolf. Daws is starting to look good. You could argue that we wasted some later picks. Agains, have to fit them in the system. We can't yet graduate Wolf, so it's backing up.
  14. The issue today with Markstrom (since he hasn't played a game yet) is the cap hit on this year's cap. It prevented us from overpaying in FA for a F or D. The roster spot complicated it by not giving us a spot to sign a top goalie in FA if there was one available TO US. Trading Markstrom is always an option, but we went through the dark days of having no real starter and then having Smith. Doing so means we have Vladar and Wolf as the only option. Neither has played more than 30 games in a season. We might be fine or a lotto team. I was in favor of trading Vladar earlyu on, since it would at least leave us with a starter. Trading Markstrom sets us back. If he is as bad a trade option, why do we do it? Lose assets to make the trade. The cap left means we can make more trades to improve the roster, but we have little left other than picks. So we hold out a year, possibly suck, and sign a UFA next summer. Same issues with overpaying. Trading Markstrom this season is scorched earth, but only useful if we burn the barn and kill the horses.
  15. Klefbom, but that was "injuries". His initial issue that kept him out was an alergy to his skates. Almost like latex alergy (no jokes please). But that seemed to disappear and he had shoulder surgery. His injury basically ended his time as an Oiler and he never returned from Sweden. It was one of the more advantageous LTIR injuries. Again these were physical, so different kettle. I don't know of any unspecified absences like that that ended a career. Price is closer to this. On a different not, was watching the PITTS game. There was a play that made me think back to the Oilers-Flames playoffs. The player was bent over and his face contacted by a PITTS player's stick. Refs reviewed and called it no penalty. You remember the hit on Yamamoto by Stone? Double minor when Yamamoto got a stick in the face at knee level. That penalty set up the tying goal. Not sure if it's the same thing or not, just reminded me of an annoying call.
  16. I was thinking we had to have the roster set by Oct. 9th. Capfriendly listed all the LTIR "transactions" for lack of a better word. I think it's just a coincidence that Kylington has to be out for us to ice a full roster. They may have had a backup plan before camp started, but shelved it when they talked to Kylington. Just my thoughts of course. I am a bit up and down about Hanifin staying past this year. There is some underlying talk that they are talking to him again. I'm okay with him at present salary, not so sure about anything close to 7. Kinda wished we had seen Kylington this camp, to see if he was back in form. Would make it easier to know if a Hanifin trade was worth the risk. If Kyl doesn't come back this season, is it even worth looking at re-signing him? 2 years without any play. Long time.
  17. I have Gru, but that was just luck through rankings.
  18. 55 is no slouch. Bennett's best season was 28 goals and 49 points. I get what you are saying, though.
  19. I think you are suggesting that his contract sets up his next contract, assuming he can continue as at least a 20g guy. He will be a UFA, so he needs to pick it up. On a side note, he has a M-NTC (8 team no trade list) this and next year. I can't see any situation you need to buy out Mangiapane. You may not re-sign him, but he will get a job. The cap goes up $5M next season, so it should not be a concern for a middle 6 guy looking for $5M. This season was an outlier due to the cap not keeping up with salary demands. The middle got squished.
  20. I think what Mangiapane shows is that you need to be careful when you extend after a career year. I think there are teams he would fit perfectly on, but I don't know that they want to trade a cheaper, bigger player for him. Or even a RHS to push Coleman back to LW. Who knows. Of course, the new top line here could become a real threat to other teams and they line up against the top 6 with impunity. That leaves our 3rd line with more space. One thing to consider is that Mange score 35 when we had no other 2nd line. Last year we couldn't seem to have any line a threat.
  21. If I am not mistaken, he's already been moved to IR, showing a salary relief of $2.5M. I looked in Capfriendly and it shows a LTIR usage of $2,443,500.00 LTIR used. Can't figure out the math (not important) but it shows a cap of $406k for Pelletier. If Kylington came back, we would for sure need to move Pelletier to full LTIR usage and send down Rooney and likely Hunt. It's not a great situation to be in. Kylington aside, we are capped out again. Next year not the issue.
  22. Your bottom line is just that, your bottom line. I believe you are more worked up about this pick than anyone else. I don't see anyone posting that we should fire the GM over it. I will leave it at that, since most will probably wait till Honzek actually plays before they start saying it was a win or a fail. Gaudreau's first 5 games was not proof positive of what he would bring to the game. More examples than that of course. BTW, Janko was drafted in 2012. I think some things have changed.
  23. #Flames at practice Tuesday: Huberdeau-Lindholm-Dube Sharangovich-Kadri-Coronato Mangiapane-Backlund-Coelman Greer-Ruzicka-Duehr Hunt Hanifin-Andersson Zadorov-Weegar Oesterle-Tanev Gilbert Markstrom Vladar By the look of it, no change except subbing in Greer. Oesterle-Tanev could be an improvement over the last pre-season game results. I guess we are not going to hear anything about Kylington.
  24. Perhaps we can bury this thread with regards to discussing picks from this year for awhile. Top 5 picks this year are close to a slam dunk, for picks. None are proven yet. Most, if not all, will be NHL players for a long time. Beyond that, it's a lot of development needed for the rest of the draft. If we are going to criticize the GM, there are better areas of responsibility to choose from. Trade, signings, roster.... Have at er.
  25. It sets up two options for wrong wing one-timers. Coronato seemed to look good on walking into the slot area on RW. I think perhaps Lindholm is too predictable on RW. The 2nd PP is more predictable with Backlund there. Typically they go with 2D. Like you, this is very rare to see.
