  1. The maddening thing about carrying 3 goalies is that we waived a good possession forward (and lost him). Waive a goalie already and call up two players until we have IR players return. Smid and Colborne can do conditioning stints to get up to speed once they return. We have 22 players on the active roster right now. If goaltending is not the "problem", it also isn't helping. Ramo came close to stealing a game, but gave up a stinker at the worst possible time. Hiller made one or two really good saves last night, but made McDavid look like a star.
  2. It's downright scary what the goalie stats look like this year. Ramo IMHO has played the best behind the worst Flames efforts. Hiller looked ordinary tonight. One good save. That is it. He didn't keep us in the game. 2-1 and we have a chance to come back. 3-1 and it's just about over.
  3. Our goalies have played average at time, stellar at others, but overall, just average. I think BT lost confidence with Hiller, so he signed Ramo. BT does not decide who plays, though. Hartley is going to go with the guys he feels are the top 2, whether that is based on last year or pre-season/camp/initial games.
  4. Unless Ramo becomes more consistent for 60 minutes, he becomes a liability. 58 minutes he was comfortable and well positioned. He scrambled a bit, but some bad coverage was mostly to blame for that. He is improving, while Hiller seems to be the same. Typical starting goalie; doesn't wow you and doesn't steal many games. Meh. The problem I have right now is that when we have a solid looking prospect looking like he is ready to take the net, we don't run with it. How many times have goalies come out of nowhere to steal the job. Anaheim, Ottawa, Montreal, Edmonton (just kidding), San Jose, Buffalo... Point is we have a possible starter quality player watching the games on a monitor. I don't know what goes on during the practices, so there may be a valid reason for this. I'm not going to get bent about this, since this is a frequent occurance in Calgary. Always earned has many ways to earn it.
  5. Toronto has Reimer, who basically keeps losing his starting spot. I doubt that their GM wants to keep paying $2.3m for a backup. They are rebuilding and have invested too many seasons in Reimer. They want to make a chance. Buffalo has a young goalie with little NHL experience. They are using a backup to carry the mail for now. Edmonton has a rookie goalie that has played one game this season. They could easily demote him to try out a more established goalie prospect. It offers them cap relief and would be a thorn in the sides of the Flames. Those are just 4 teams that are in rebuilds that could easily take a flier on a waiver pickup. How many other teams are struggling out of the gate? Ducks? Columbus? Devils?
  6. The risk is too high to waive a goalie prospect with NHL experience. Any team that has waiver exempt player would snatch him up in a second, and demote one of their exempt players. Think Toronto, or Arizona, or Edmonton, or Buffalo. Any of those rebuilding teams could afford to so it. The worse thing that could happen to those teams is that they have to offer him back if they try to waive him themselves. $600k salary is a low hit. Any one of those teams could demote an existing goalie and still save money.
  7. Waiving Hiller or Ramo is the likely conclusion to this matter. Once they pass through, they will get assigned to Stockton. There they will play as much as the situation will allow. Simpson will get assigned to the ECHL. I am not saying a trade can't or won't be made. Unless it happens soon, waiving a goalie will likely be the result. Alternating goalies means that someone get really cold, while the other sit as a backup or play. Only the starter for the next game will get the full practice time, while the other two alternate. I can't see any situation where they waive Ortio. A trade is possible, but not a waive.
  8. They can't send him down for any conditioning stint; he is on the active roster unlike Smid and the others.
  9. I doubted that he would start Ortio against Winnipeg. He was lit up in game #82, even if the Flames dressed their AHL squad. Winnipeg and Edmonton B2B. I would suggest that Ortio will get the Oilers.
  10. There was very little said about the depth chart, other than Ortio was 3rd. What is Hartley going to say. The guy sitting in the pressbox is obviously #3. The two starters from last season both are on the team, so they are 1 and 2. BT is going to do something before Halloween. Whether that means a trade or one of the three waived, it will be resolved. I really think they are deciding between Ramo and Hiller for being waived/traded. Yes, Ortio will likely get one of the B2B starts. He didn;t do well last year against Winnipeg, so he would likely start against the Oilers.
  11. I hope a trade comes soon. I don't like the idea of waiving a goalie, since the one sent down will take games away from Gillies. He is going to be good, but need to play the bulk of games. It could be a long month for goalies if Hiller gets on a run or Ortio or Ramo does. Ramo didn't lose the first game, but the change was needed to spark the team. They have to know that losing a game for a goalie might mean he is traded or waived.
  12. Big game for a lot of prospects: Dougie's brother with a goal Kylington with 1g, 1a Granlund with 1g, 2a Grabt with 2g Nakladal with 1g, 2a Poirier, Elson and Agostino with 2a Arnold with 1g Seiloff, Shore, and Johnson with 1a Oh, and the Oiler farm team was shut out.
  13. It's funny the difference a year makes. Hiller had such promise. He performed so well in October and parts of November. Saying that, he has lost confidence of the coach. Whether it is practice or attitude or whatever, he will likely be the guy to go. If it's Buffalo, picks make sense, but so do prospects. They have too many of both and not enough NHL players of value. I would prefer a semi-developed prospect, as you have some sense of their future value. A pick is fine, but a crap shoot most years. The big advantage of a pick is the likely high position of those picks (if their own).
  14. I find it odd that Calgary is taking all 3 goalies to Vancouver for Saturday's game. I suppose it gives them options if one were to become ill or injured at practice, but that is overkill. More likely, there is something going on in the background. (** Stops to adjust tinfoil hat**)
  15. How about Shaller (played with Janko in Providence). Or Pysyk (RHS D-man - 23 years old), Or Sanguinetti (RHS D-man good AHL numbers).
  16. I don't know if this loss makes any difference to the rotation. Any of the three goalies can win in Vancouver. If we are going to give up over 30 shots a game, it going to be a goalie turnstyle. Three goalies isn't enough for that.
  17. I think he has some grit, but lacks the mobility that is typical of every Flame defenseman. Even Engelland will rush the ice, but back off at the blueline. Kulak has that and an ok defensive game, while Spoon just has the D side. Easy choice for a coach.
  18. I doubt that Ramo was signed at the last minute, only to be waived come the start of the season. Ortio is a huge risk to waive, while Hiller is not. If the competition between the three is still too close to call, then a trade becomes likely, as they are all performing well.
  19. Not sure of the length of time this will be done. Hartley has said he will go with the hot hand; you win, you get another game, you lose you don't. Leeway will be given if your goalie is peppered or gives up one goal in a 1-0 loss. I can't see Ortio being waived, but the number of goalies will be reduced once Smid, Colborne and Brodie return. Colborne will be the 13th F, and we will have 8 D. Somebody gotta go. Kulak has about 10 games to prove he needs to stay. Wish him luck.
  20. His scoring stats are right up there with the baby Flames top 3 last season. Better p.gp than Hathaway.
  21. The other thing to note is that almost every year, the goalie that starts the final pre-season game starts the regular season.
  22. http://flames.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=781675&navid=DL|CGY|home Flames acquire Feddie Hamilton from the AVS for a conditional pick. To be assigned to the Heat.
  23. I remember Luongo when the Canucks Lack'd a decent goalie.
  24. Scott CruickshankVerified account ‏@CruickshankCH 4h4 hours ago #Flames' farm team in Stockton signs Colton Orr to AHL deal. Guess we need to sign a tough guy for the Heat every year.
