  1. 1. LAST TIME OUT The talk over the last bit was needing big-time goals from big-time players. Well, the Flames got just that against the Kraken Wednesday night. Deadlocked at two apiece in the third period: Enter Jonathan Huberdeau. The Flames winger corralled a puck in the slot, spun around and fired into the top corner with exactly eight minutes left in regulation. The goal held up as the game-winner as the Flames skated away with a big 3-2 win. "Yeah, especially after a tough loss here (against Edmonton), going there obviously we knew it was going to be hard, but we stuck with it," Huberdeau said. "(We) showed some character in the third period and found a way to win. We needed that it was huge, to get ahead in the standings as well. "It felt good. I should've scored earlier in the third when I had that chance in front, I wasn't happy, but I had to redeem myself after that when I had the chance to score. We are creating some chances offensively so that's good for our line, so we got to keep doing that every game." Tonight presents another impotant divisional clash with the Canucks paying a visit to the 'Dome to wrap up 2022. "It's a big one," Milan Lucic said. "In order to keep up with the pack it's important to get points and important to win hockey games. We're in a position where it feels like we're playing playoff hockey already. Where every game matters, every two points matters and that's our focus right now, focusing on the next game and focusing on the next two points. "That's what has helped our game and helped us get points this month." 2. KNOW YOUR ENEMY The Canucks saw their three-game win streak come to an end Thursday night in Winnipeg with a 4-2 decision. Andrei Kuzmenko and Conor Garland provided the goals while Collin Delia stopped 35 shots. The loss also saw a stretch of seven undefeated road games snapped. The Canucks got off to a fast start with Kuzmenko's 15th of the season coming just 41 seconds in. After the strong start, the Jets turned on the pressure and rattled off three unanswered goals in the second and never looked back. "We were happy with the way we started, coming in ready to play, but just couldn't follow it up with anything good in the second and third," Bo Horvat said after the game. "We kind of sat back and got comfortable, and that's the result that happens. "We took a couple of unfortunate penalties and they capitalized on those." With the loss, Vancouver sits five points out of the last wildcard spot in the Western Conference but do have two games in hand over the Flames. Sitting at .500, the Canucks have slowly dug themselves out of the early hole they found themselves in and have gone 6-4 in their last 10 as they continue to make a push. 3. FAST FACTS LINDHOLM 700: Elias Lindholm is slated to skate in his 700th NHL game tonight against the Canucks. Lindholm was drafted fifth overall in the 2013 NHL Draft by the Carolina Hurricanes and skated in his first NHL game on Oct. 4, 2013 against the Detroit Red Wings. He would skate in an additional 373 games as a member of the Hurricanes before being acquired by the Flames in the 2018 off-season. The Boden, Sweden native has since skated in 325 games for Calgary with 128 goals and 166 assists for 294 points while skating in every game for the Flames over the past two seasons (56 in 2021, 82 in 2021-22). Lindholm will become the second Flame to skate in their 700th NHL game this season, joining Jonathan Huberdeau who reached the milestone on Dec. 18 in San Jose. HOT STARTS: Tyler Toffoli opened the scoring in the 3-2 win in Seattle, with the goal marking the 41st time Calgary has scored in the first period, tied with the Golden Knights for the most among all teams in the NHL. The Flames have scored in the opening frame in seven of their last eight games with a record of 4-2-2 over that stretch. DID YOU KNOW? Trevor Lewis netted the Flames 1000th goal against the Canucks in franchise history. Calgary has outscored Vancouver 1000-922 over the 296 games the clubs have squared off. Jacques Richard scored the Flames first ever goal against the Canucks on October 28, 1972 while Calgary was based in Atlanta. 4. PLAYERS TO WATCH Flames - Rasmus Andersson The blueliner has done it all this season. Ras has dazzled with his play at both ends and heads into the match-up with five points in as many games (1G, 4A) and continues to play big minutes, averaging 24:54 on the year. His 21 assists are good for second on the team while his four game-winning goals tie for ninth in the league. Canucks - Elias Pettersson It's been quite the season for the 24-year-old, currently sitting 11th in league scoring and showing no signs of slowing down. Pettersson enters the tilt with nine points in four games (3G, 6A). 5. THE YEAR THAT WAS The Flames amassed the sixth most points through 2022 in the NHL and hold a record of 51-27-12 heading into tonight's contest and averaged the third most shots per game while surrendering the third fewest shots per game on average. Elias Lindholm leads all Flames with 88 points in 2022 (42G, 46A) in 89 games, while Rasmus Andersson sets the mark for all blueliners with 61 points including 52 assists.

  3. 1. ABOUT LAST NIGHT Moral victories don't count for anything in the standings. But when you consider the litany of 'good' in last night's loss to the Oilers, you can't help but think... Isn't that what we envisioned of this team? What we all thought they were capable of with the group they've assembled? Isn't that what it's supposed to look like? The Flames out-shot the Oilers 47-22, which included a 24-4 barrage in the third period, but couldn't solve Stuart Skinner for a second time. Connor McDavid's powerplay goal at 7:28 of the final frame stood as the winner, as Edmonton survived a late onslaught and took the season's final installment of the Battle of Alberta, 2-1. Mikael Backlund scored the Flames' lone marker and struck iron with only four seconds left in regulation. A heartbreaking end to a night where the better team lost. "It's a tough loss," Backlund said. "I thought we didn't give up a whole lot, but at the same time, we've got to bear down and score." It certainly wasn't for a lack of trying from the homeside, who had six additional minutes of offensive-zone time, an 80-26 shot-attempt edge, and a scorching 43-16 fusillade in scoring chances (including 16-6 from the high-danger areas), 5-on-5. You could argue they could have been more selective to make life on the Oilers puck-stopper just that more difficult. But regardless of where you stand on that, facts are facts - and the numbers, both in quantity and quality, were staggering. "It's tough," Backlund said. "It would have been a great feeling to score there, but it's almost worse hitting the posts then them making saves. "A lot of posts and bars right now. I don't think it's bad luck or anything, it's just the way it is right now. We've got to keep shooting, create chances. We've got to score more than one to win." Despite facing only 22 shots, Jacob Markstrom was excellent. Of note, he made two incredible stops off Leon Draisaitl in the second period that were labelled for the twine. Both were the product of the patented cross-seam feed that he, Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins have perfected over the years, but were ready perfectly by the goaltender as he moved across and kicked out the left pad. 2. KNOW YOUR ENEMY Forget the made-for-TV movie starring Katherine Barrell and Evan Roderick. This is the REAL 'Tale of Two Christmases.' While the Flames roll into the Emerald City on the tail of a back-to-back set - their second in five days - the hometown Kraken are only now emerging from their turkey-filled holiday, having played just once in the past week. Seattle entered the NHL's festive break with a 6-5 shootout loss to the Canucks on Dec. 22, snapping a modest two-game winning streak. Daniel Sprong tallied a pair, Oliver Bjorkstrand had a goal and an assist, and Martin Jones made 32 saves for the Kraken, but a five-point night (plus the shootout winner) from Vancouver's Elias Pettersson was too much to overcome. Pettersson scored his second of the game with only 1:20 to play in regulation to force overtime. "We're here to win a hockey game and we didn't do that, so that's disappointing," Kraken Head Coach Dave Hakstol told reporters. "We'll look at not only line combinations, but exactly what we did in the third period, and there's a couple of things we have to do better. We have to do better when we've got a two-goal lead. That's a game we should be able to close out." The Kraken - who got contributions from all four forward lines and entered the night with a sparkling 11-1-1 record when leading after two periods - had a 4-2 lead after 40 minutes. The shootout loss drops the Kraken's record to 7-2-2 against the Pacific Division and 12-4-4 against Western Conference opponents. They're now 4-5-1 overall in their last 10. However, after finishing dead last in the Pac8 last year, the Kraken have made significant strides and enter tonight's divisional clash in a playoff spot. "Last year, Vegas was supposed to be the favourite and ran into all the (injury) trouble and now Vegas IS the favourite," Flames Head Coach Darryl Sutter said of the ultra-competitive Pacific Division. "Seattle gets goaltending and they come along. "I've said it before: Five teams could make the playoffs in this division." Jones has had the bulk of the work between the pipes this year, appearing in 23 games and putting together a 14-5-3 record, along with an .888 save percentage and a 2.99 goals-against average. Philipp Grubauer, meanwhile, has a 3-5-1 record in 11 games, along with an .882 save percentage and a 3.30 goals-against average. 3. FAST FACTS SUCCESS IN SEATTLE: The Flames have made two trips to Climate Pledge Arena since Seattle began play in the NHL in 2021, winning on both occasions. The Flames were victorious in an offensive showdown, 6-4, on Dec. 30, 2021 during their first-ever trip to Climate Pledge. The Flames out-scored Seattle 3-2 in a five-goal third period, with goals from Andrew Mangiapane, Matthew Tkachuk and Noah Hanifin to knock off the Kraken. Calgary also won its second trip to Seattle, 4-1, in April of last season. Hanifin recorded four assists in the April meeting, while Jacob Markstrom put up a .964 save percentage and turned aside 27 shots, earning First Star honors. KRAKEN HUNTER: Elias Lindholm has recorded five points in five career meetings against the Kraken over his career. Lindholm had two assists in their first meeting back in November, tying him for third in points against the Kraken this season among all skaters, and is also tied for second among skaters to only face the Kraken once so far in 2022-23. He is currently second on the Flames in career points against Seattle, trailing Nazem Kadri, who scored in the clubs' first meeting this season, and has six points (2G, 4A) in four career games against the Kraken. DID YOU KNOW? The Flames were involved in the Seattle Kraken's first-ever trade. On July 22, 2021, the Flames acquired forward Tyler Pitlick from Seattle in exchange for a 2022 fourth-round pick. Calgary is one of only two franchises the Kraken have made multiple transactions with. The Flames have made two trades with the Kraken in Seattle's short history. The only other team to make multiple trades with Seattle is Washington. 4. PLAYERS TO WATCH Flames - MacKenzie Weegar There were simply no passengers last night. Just varying degrees of good and great. MacKenzie Weegar, in particular, played perhaps his best game as a Flame. The blueliner is still on the hunt for his first goal as a Flame, but if the Battle of Alberta was any indication, he's close. Real close. Weegar finished the night with two shots, four hits, and a sparkling 76.60% possession rate (36-11), and was a best on the defensive zone, breaking up plays with an active stick and breaking the puck out with authority. Kraken - Matty Beniers The 20-year-old scored the winning goal when these teams last met back on Nov. 2, and currently leads all rookies in goals (11) and points (25) in 32 games this season. While Beniers has been on the quieter side lately with only a pair of helpers in his last five games, the 6-foot-2, 178-lb. pivot is as explosive as they come, and can blow a game open at a moment's notice. 5. QUOTABLE Jacob Markstrom on the first game back after the Christmas break: "You carry that (momentum) with you for sure. We had a nice skate this morning and nice few days break with the family and everybody's excited to get back in there. I thought it showed today, but it's still a loss. Our division here is tight and we can't lose these tight games." Stats and Team Comparison POSTING OPEN

  5. And to you and your family Deeds, as well as all members and visitors to the site.
  6. 1. LAST TIME OUT It was a heckuva way to head into the Christmas break. The Flames went 3-0-1 on their four-game swing through California, finishing up with a 3-2 OT victory against the Ducks on Dec. 23, Rasmus Andersson scoring the game-winner. The win accomplished the team's stated goal before they left the then Alberta deep freeze for sunny SoCal - get into a playoff position by Christmas. The pair of point vaulted them over, who else, but the Oilers for second wild-card spot. And while they were able to celebrate the Christmas break with a few egg nogs for making good on that goal, head coach Darryl Sutter was quick to point out the real work will come now as they look to keep a postseason berth - and climb the standings - in the back half of this campaign. "You know what, this has been a grind for our team," said Sutter of the stretch drive to their three-day Christmas vacation. "They need a break and tonight was just about digging down there a little bit, that's pretty clear. A lot of games. "Doesn't get easier." 2. KNOW YOUR ENEMY The Oilers had a rough path to Christmas, losing four of their last five - although one was in OT and another in a shootout. Their most recent outing was a 5-2 loss to the Canucks at home on Dec. 23. Derek Ryan and Connor McDavid scored to stake the homeside to a 2-0 lead after the first period but J.T. Miller would tally a pair in the second period to tie it up after 40 minutes. Bo Horvat then scored twice and Ilya Mikheyev also lit the lamp to close it out. "We had the start that we wanted and then we cough it up," McDavid, who extended his point streak to 15 games, told NHL.com. "It was not the second period that we wanted, but we still had a chance. We have to find a way to win that game, there is just no way around it." Zach Hyman had an equally blunt take. "It's unacceptable," he said. "We had a really good start and were up 2-0 and were the fresher team, and then they scored five unanswered. Obviously you can't win like that." Stuart Skinner made 25 saves in the contest, while Colin Delia got his first victory as a starter for the Canucks turning aside 31 pucks. 3. FAST FACTS BOA THIS SEASON: This is the third and final edition of the Battle of Alberta during the 2022-23 campaign, with the Flames and Oilers having split the two meetings so far. Their first meeting came on the Flames second game of the season in Edmonton which saw an early Flames offensive onslaught with first period goals from Backlund, Stone, Kadri and Mangiapane on 16 opening-frame shots. Kadri's goal was his first as a Flame, Michael Stone would go on to record his first three-point game in the NHL and Dan Vladar made 20 saves to help the Flames win round one of the Battle of Alberta 4-3. In their second meeting, Mikael Backlund scored his second against the Oilers this season shorthanded, Brett Ritchie also tallied for Calgary, but two goals from Zach Hyman would help the Oilers take the second meeting 3-2. MARKY MARK: Jacob Markstrom turned aside 21 of the 23 shots he faced on Friday night at the Honda Center to help the Flames knock off the Ducks 3-2 in overtime. With the win, Markstrom moved into a tie for the sixth most regular season and playoff wins combined in franchise history (75). Markstrom tied Trevor Kidd who spent five seasons with the Flames from 1991 to 1997 playing in 178 games over the course of his time as a Flame. Markstrom is in his third year as a Flame and has amassed the 75 wins in 142 total games in a Flames sweater. HOT STARTS: Michael Stone scored 4:19 into the game on Friday night in Anaheim to give the Flames an early 1-0 lead, marking the 13th time this season the Flames have scored in the opening five minutes of a game so far this season which leads the NHL in goals in the opening five minutes of a game. The Flames have scored in the games opening five minutes in three-straight games, including the Stone goal along with Jonathan Huberdeau scoring 3:23 into the game in Los Angeles and Tyler Toffoli and Dillon Dube both scoring in the opening 30 seconds in San Jose. 4. PLAYERS TO WATCH Flames - Tyler Toffoli Toff's been on a tear! The Flames forward has four goals and seven points in his last four games and is hitting his stride at this crucial juncture of the season. Oilers - Connor McDavid Pretty hard to go with anyone else. He's leading the league in goals and points, and his current 15-game point streak (14 goals and 17 assists) is the longest currently in the NHL. 5. DID YOU KNOW: For the first time since 2009, the first two Battle of Alberta matchups in a season have both been decided by one goal. The last time was Oct. 3, 2009 (CGY 4 @ EDM3) and Oct. 8, 2009 (CGY 4 @ EDM 3 SO).
  7. 7 of 8 points on this trip.. In a wildcard spot at Christmas.. Have a good break and lets keep it rolling in a few days.
  8. Merry Christmas Flames fans! I’ll likely miss tomorrows game, it’ll be Christmas Eve here and I’ll be doing family stuff.. (hopefully can sneak off and tune in for a bit). Stay safe and enjoy yourselves, hopefully a Flames win for Christmas.
  9. 1. LAST TIME OUT After a 5-2 win against the Sharks on Sunday, the Flames were looking to build off that momentum as they push for a playoff spot before the Christmas break. They did just that on Tuesday with a 7-3 rout in the back half of their two-game set in San Jose. "It's really difficult to win back-to-back games in one building, especially in your division. So I give our team full marks," was head coach Darryl Sutter's assessment after the emphatic victory. The game started out with a franchise record being set when the Dillon Dube, Elias Lindholm and Tyler Toffoli line struck twice within the first 30 seconds of the opening stanza. "Lindy won three face-offs clean in a row, and our defence jumped, and away we went," Sutter said. "They started one centreman, Lindy won the draw, scored. They put another centreman out there, Lindy won the draw, went in there and score ... could have scored three just like that." Previously, the franchise record for the fastest pair of goals scored to start a game belonged to Doug Risebrough and Colin Patterson when they scored within the first 32 seconds of a game against Hartford on March 11, 1987. Toffoli, Dube, and Trevor Lewis found the back of the net while the Sharks received goals from Nico Sturm and Alexander Barbanov through the first 40 minutes. In the third period, the Sharks were able to tie it up but the Flames answered with goals from Nazem Kadri (2), Milan Lucic, and Toffoli to complete the 7-3 win. Jacob Markstrom was strong in net once again, making 24 saves on the night. 2. KNOW YOUR ENEMY Just like the Flames, the Kings head into Thursday's match-up with two straight wins over California clubs. On the weekend, they downed the San Jose Sharks 3-2 in a shootout and on Tuesday, they dispatched their SoCal rivals, the Anaheim Ducks, by a score of 4-1. That victory saw Drew Doughty, Alex Iafallo, Viktor Arvidsson, and Kevin Fiala find the back of the net, and goaltender Pheonix Copley make 24 saves. "It was good that everybody bought in," Iafallo told NHL.com afterwards. "Everybody's kind of making small plays, talking out there, talking in the locker room. We got to keep doing that going into Christmas break." Copley, a native of North Pole, Alaska, who was signed to a one-year deal in the off-season, was recalled at the start of the month when the Kings opted to send Cal Petersen to the AHL. Copley has spent most of his career in the minors, with short stints with the St. Louis Blues and Washington Capitals, but has quickly solidified himself as a capable NHLer with the Kings. The 30-year-old is 5-1-0 in his six games this month, posting a 2.43 GAA and a .912 save percentage. "Our team's playing better right now in front of Pheonix than we did in front of the other two," Kings head coach Todd McLellan told NHL.com. "And when it's time for Quickie (Jonathan Quick) to go back in, or Cal (Petersen), or whoever it might be, I certainly expect and I'm sure the players expect that type of performance in front of them as well." 3. FAST FACTS A TRIO OF APPLES: Jonathan Huberdeau recorded three assists on Tuesday night in San Jose for the first time in a Flames sweater. All three of Huberdeau's assists came in the third period and he was just one away from tying the Flames franchise record for most assists in a period, which was set back in 1986 by Gary Suter. DIVISIONAL DUEL: The Flames have an overall record of 5-2-1 against Pacific Division opponents this season and a record of 9-4-1 against Western Conference opponents. DID YOU KNOW? Elias Lindholm is only five games away from hitting the 700 mark in his career. The Swede, who leads the Flames in scoring with 31 points, has 192 goals, 288 assists, and 480 points in 695 career games. 4. PLAYERS TO WATCH Flames - Tyler Toffoli Holy moly, Tyler Toffoli! The forward heads into tonight's divisional match-up with three goals and five points in his last two games. With two tallies against San Jose on Tuesday, he's tied for the team lead in goals scored with 13. Kings - Kevin Fiala Fiala has been incredibly impressive in his first season in LA and currently leads the Kings with 35 points on the year. He scored an incredible solo-effort goal against the Ducks on Tuesday. 5. QUOTABLE Trevor Lewis' assessment of this road trip so far: "I think we've had good starts to periods, we just have to figure out the full 60 game and not have those little lapses. It's good to win those first two and now we have two more big ones that are both division games, too." POSTING OPEN

  11. I didn't even notice that putting it together - He's not top 9 on any team in the league.. He has to have some dirt on Sutter.
  12. 1. SO WE MEET AGAIN It's the type of killer instinct the Flames have been looking for on a more consistent basis this season, beating the Sharks 5-2 Sunday night. Taking on the Sharks in the first of this two-straight-in-San-Jose set, Tyler Toffoli took advantage of a Sharks miscue and made them pay with a perfectly placed shot after a turnover in the opposition zone. The Sharks later got a tally from Timo Meier to knot things at one after 20 minutes. Then it was the Big Man Milan Lucic scoring his first of the season on a beauty in the second and heading into the third, it was all about a little carpe diem - make good and seize the day. And boy did they - in historic style. Elias Lindholm scored a pair in the first 35 seconds of the final frame - a new Flames franchise mark (see more below in Fast Facts) - and they didn't let their foot off the gas, Dillon Dube then rounding out the scoring with a wild tight-angle shot into an open net. It was the type of game the Flames want to make the norm: taking advantage of their opportunties to finish out opponents. "It's obviously good to contribute offensively, but the main thing is getting a big win here to start off the road trip," said Lucic. "This is a huge time of year for us - a huge road trip for us before the Christmas break starts - and we wanted to make sure we brought one of our best road games here tonight. "Nice to contribute, especially when it's a 1-1 game to get that go-ahead goal and win that game." The Flames have had trouble at times this year finding the back of the net despite often having a bevy of quality chances. This victory was the type of game that helps builds confidence. "I think it was nice to see we bang a couple quick in a row there," said MacKenzie Weegar after the team's practice on Monday. "Feels good. I know a lot of the guys - sometimes you talk about bearing down and whatnot - but I think it's going to come here. If they stay with it and they don't get too frustrated, but they bear down on those chances and keep the confidence up, I think it's going to go a long way for the team. There was lots of energy on the bench last night, too. It was a good game and we have to keep this thing rolling. "And everybody starts to get going, feeling good, keep that positive energy. Keep it loose, keep it light, but at the same time, still keep playing hard and keep pushing the pace." Defenceman Dennis Gilbert drew into the lineup in the tilt, with Head Coach Darryl Sutter electing to play seven defenceman and 11 forwards. Brett Ritchie, Matthew Phillips and Radim Zohorna (non-COVID illness) were the scratches up front. Gilbert had a spirited scrap with Jonah Gadjovich in the game and left for repairs and did not return. The Flames recalled DeSimone from AHL Tuesday, Gilbert placed on IR. 2. FAST FACTS MAGNIFICENT MARKSTROM: Jacob Markstrom played in his 400th NHL game on Sunday night in San Jose and celebrated it with the 5-2 win. Markstrom turned aside 26 of the 28 shots he faced at the SAP Center and is currently second in wins among all goalies from the 2008 NHL draft, trailing only Braden Holtby. Markstrom was a second-round pick by Florida and spent parts of four seasons with the Panthers. He was then traded to Vancouver where he spent seven seasons and earned his first All-Star Game nod with the Canucks in 2020. He signed with the Flames as a free agent during the 2020 off-season and has played in 128 games with Calgary. POSITIVE PLAY: Defenceman Rasmus Andersson and Noah Hanifin were both a season-high +4 on Sunday night in San Jose. That is the highest plus/minus rating of any skater on the Flames so far this season and for Rasmus Andersson the third time he has been a +4 in his career. As for Noah Hanifin, he has been a +4 or higher four times in his career and the pair both recorded an assist in the 5-2 win. LETHAL ELIAS: Elias Lindholm set a Flames franchise record with the fastest two goals to start a period by one player with his pair of tallies coming just 0:35 seconds into the third period on Sunday night in San Jose. Lindholm is now tied for the eighth-fastest two goals by one player to start a period in NHL history. The last skater to score two faster period-opening tallies was Mike Knuble who scored a pair of goals 0:27 into the opening period on Feb. 14, 2003 while he was a member of the Bruins. With the pair of goals, Lindholm is now ninth in multi-goal games by a centre in Flames franchise history with 16 multi-goal efforts as well as moving into second in career game winning goals by a European player in franchise history with 26, only trailing Mikael Backlund's 32 GWG's. 3. PLAYERS TO WATCH Flames - Elias Lindholm The Flames centre kicked off this trip with a bang, as noted above. He picked up three points Sunday in San Jose and has five points in his last two games. Sharks - Erik Karlsson Talk about a bounce-back season for the veteran. The Sharks blueliner picked up a pair of assists in the loss Sunday and was sitting eighth in league scoring heading into Tuesday action, and was tops among blueliners with 12 goals and 41 points. 4. QUOTABLE MacKenzie Weegar on importance of next three games: "It's huge. It kind of shows where the teams are at. Because I know after Christmas, games get really tight and points mean a lot. They mean a lot now, but I think right now, these three games are huge, but we've got to take it one game at a time, just focus on tomorrow, focus on winning that game and then moving on to LA and Anaheim. But I think right now, we just need to stay focused on tomorrow night." 5. THE TRUE WARRIOR Hockey players are widely known for their toughness. We're rarely aware of any injury or ailment they're playing through on any given night. But maybe one of the toughest moments at the Scotiabank Saddledome this year came from someone other than a member of the Flames. POSTING OPEN
