  1. So good news, regarding Smith's injury. But we shouldn't rush him as tempting as it may be. Yes we are in a tight race and are gonna want our #1 back ASAP, but if we rush him back and the injury occurs that could be catastrophic. I say give Rittich/Gillies the next 3 or 4 starts and go from there. I know Rittich is getting the next 2, but once again let's no rush Smith back
  2. Another thing to consider is Smith's age. Has he been amazing this year? Yes he has but unfortunately he won't be here long term due to his age. Look at what Nashville is doing they've got a similar aged goalie in Rinne who is excellent, but they are bringing along the next in line Saros and giving him key starts. Then he will be more ready to handle the workload once Rinne leaves. Our goal should be to groom Rittich as next in line and that requires more than 1 or 2 starts a month
  3. I'm worried about Smith being over-played, IMO Rittich should have started the Vegas game as Smith as an all-star really didn't get a break on the weekend. Rittich has played well in all of his starts, we can't only play him in the second half of b2b's, we need to start sprinkling in Rittich starts more often
  4. Could be, radio guys said commercial so I just assumed. Either way, Rittich needs to get in more games than just the back end of b2b's
  5. Curious as to who starts Tuesday against Vegas. I mean Smith is flying cross-continent either at the moment or Monday AM and I heard the all-stars fly commercial. I know for us big whoop you have to fly with normal people, but when you're used to private jets I'm sure it can be difficult. As big a game as Tuesday is, I give Smith the night off as he really didn't get a break this weekend and has had lots of travel. Start him Thursday against TB Besides, we can't only play Rittich in b2b situations, he deserves to start behind a rested team ocassionally
  6. Another Smith start tonight, 1st half of a b2b, I can understand the decision, but if he starts tomorrow night I will be a little concerned.] Full credit to Smith, he's been amazing this season, but I fear we may be overworking him. Age and injury history is also a factor, if he were to go down, we could be in trouble. EDM played the wheels off Talbot last season and look how he has done this year, and Talbot is younger with less gp than Smith.. And... Smith is heading to the all star game so he gets no real break...
  7. Most likely scenario in my mind is, Smith plays out his contract then retires. Then in 19/20 we run with a Rittich/Gillies tandem
  8. I've been very impressed with Rittich thus far. Small sample size, but he is looking like he has a chance to be next in line once Smith leaves. Need to get him a few more starts, but he was looked very good IMO
  9. I agree. I think there's a deal to be made here in Calgary at some point both sides need to put their egos aside at some point and get back to the table. A top 10 team in attendance doesn't move... http://mynhltraderumors.com/nhl-attendance-after-10-home-games-2017-2018/2017/12/14/
  10. Melnyk is such a clown. I'm glad I'm not a Sens fan...
  11. Curious as to what the coaching staff does with the upcoming b2b. Smith has been a bit shaky the last few games so I wouldn't be playing him in both. TOR I start Rittich here. TOR is a tough place to play for the Flames historically, hopefully the young guy can buck the trend. He also gets the benefit of having a rested team. MTL Main reason I'm starting Smith here is I like the chances of Smith edging out Price in a low scoring game better than Rittich. It will be a struggle to find 3 goals and we will need our goalie to be excellent. That said, we need to win both games as our play has been slipping of late. We all remember what happened when we visited these barns last year..
  12. We overpayed for Hamonic for sure, but BT felt he had to as DET and TOR were interested in Hamonic. My only issue is BT not getting the 1st lotto protected, that could really bite us, my greatest fear is we miss and have this be the year the lotto balls fall our way... Prior to the trade the guy I wanted was Demers from FLA, ARI got him for McGinn... surely BT could have made acquired him since the price was so low. I think we will be younger next year. Versteeg's career may be pretty well over after hip surgery, he won't be brought back, neither will Stajan and Brouwer needs to be bought out. I'd like to have prospects like Mangiapane, Klimchuk and Dube make the jump next year. The way the game is trending you need 4 lines that can play and score. Right now we don't have that largely due to the anchors we have on our 4th line.
  13. The guys on the 960 morning show mentioned this a few days back and I tend to agree. The Boston Bruins have up on a 21 year old RH shot D man in exchange for nothing but futures. At the time it felt like the Flames had made out like bandits in the deal. But maybe Boston saw something in him. Warrener mentioned that he doesn't think Hamilton cares, which I absolutely agree with, Hamilton shows absolutely nothing that makes me think he is a competitor. Not to mention we have to have his brother on the roster to keep him happy.
  14. As a Calgarian if that isn't a slap in the face I don't know what is
  15. Laugh at how council can even begin to think they can win an Olympic bid with the Saddledome and McMahon still in use. If I recall correctly, Nenshi said if they decide to bid,"they are going to win". How do you expect to host the world in your city with outdated facilities? 10 mill in the dome might get you a new scoreboard...
  16. I agree, I think Lindgren has shown he is an NHL goalie and Montoya would be the odd man out. I see one issue with MTL as a trade partner, if we bring in a goalie we are gonna need to move a goalie as we already have 6 under contract. MTL would be in a similar spot as they'd have Price/Lindgren and Niemi/Fucale in Laval (does Niemi get claimed yet again lol). We could move McDonald, but then what do you do with Lack? We certainly don't want 3 goalies in Stockton.
  17. 33/35 for Rittich last night. He now has a 2.17 GAA and .931 SV%. At 25 years old if he's not ready for a backup role now, then he never will. My thinking is Lack starts next Saturday in COL. If he does well then he buys himself some time, if not it's 3 strikes you're out IMO. I know that it feels like everyone is panicked over a couple poor starts, but the reality is that the league is so tight now that you can't have a drop off between your starter and backup. If we wanna be a playoff team we are gonna need 10-15 wins from our backup.
  18. In other news 38 saves for Parsons in a 2-1 OT win
  19. What I'd do is start Gillies in PHI, give Smith the week off. Philly is a tough road barn and features the leagues most lethal 1st line. If Gillies plays well, then you have your backup, if not if I were BT I'd call TOR about Pickard. Another idea I had prior to the start of the season was doing what CBJ did the last few years, shuttling Forsberg and Korpisalo up and down so both stay in game condition, we could do that with Gillies and Rittich. I can't see them continuing on with Lack even befoe tonight 1 start in the first 17 games? If that doesn't scream zero confidence I don't know what does. If we want to be a playoff team we are gonna need a backup the coach can trust as we are gonna need 10-15 wins out of him.
  20. https://flamesnation.ca/2017/11/14/report-mike-smith-didnt-travel-with-the-team-to-detroit/ Should get some clarity tomorrow. Lack was gonna start anyway even if Smith made the trip most likely. I'll be interested to see if he is just listed as day to day or placed on the IR.
  21. Was at the game tonight, not completely sold on Lack. I know he was pushed into a tough spot against a good blues team, but every shot I felt nervous. But I gotta give him credit, he made a big toe save and ended up getting the win. The question is how serious is Smith hurt and is it Gillies or Rittich that gets the call-up?
  22. With Bart in the last year of his contract and being gone after this year why not run with Kulak and Andersson as the 6 and 7? I totally get the Andersson needs to play argument but a platoon with Kulak wouldn't be the worst thing IMO. I say this because I think Andersson will be a full time NHLer next season and getting 30+ games will ease the transition next season. Both are better than Bart too, however I can't see it happening as GG is fixated on L/R pairs
  23. 32 save shutout for Rittich tonight. Gotta think the Heat have the best tandem in the AHL As of right now; Rittich 2.01 GAA .936 SV% Gillies 2.42 GAA .920 SV% - Gillies has started more games KC Parsons 4.69 GAA .870 SV% McDonald 2.82 GAA .910 SV% Parsons has started the majority of games so far which is good, obviously still adjusting to the pro game which at 20 years old is perfectly fine IMO. Good to see McDonald playing well to start the year, WHL Schneider (overage) 3.13 GAA .901 SV%
  24. This game is not Lack's fault. 1st goal horrible turnover by Hamonic, 2nd and 3rd PPG's and the 4th goal was off a freak bounce on a attempted dump in that gave the Blues a golden opportunity.
