  1. +1

However, if we do not finish in the bottom six, I would like to see the Flames attempt to trade up to draft Hanifin or Kylington.

We definitely lack potential top 2 defense-men prospects.

I don't see any chance of any team trading up this draft.  It's too deep. going by the experts who've been touting it for the last 2 years.  If the Flames manage to snag Hanifin by pure compete, I won't be too sad.

Wideman as it sits wouldn't be worth anything at the draft table.  He's a serviceable D-man, but any trade involving him would require Calgary getting beans back with his massive contract, or it would require taking on some of his payroll.

  2. Treliving stated in his final post draft video that they were looking for a backup to Ramo, not a starting goaltender.

Whether that backup be a vet such as HIller or a younger kid such as Johnson or Greiss, they most likely won't be playing the majority, but if Ramo goes down with injury, or if he goes on a very unlucky streak, the said backup will have to play well enought to carry an NHL team.

  3. Reimer to Winnipeg rumor, feel better ? LOL

That would be perfectly fine with me.  :D

It's going to be interesting to see where McDonald fits in the Flames' goalie development depth chart in 2 years.  He's still quite a ways away from any sort of pro action.

  4. How much would Hiller cost?

Do you think that the Ducks brought his stock down by consistently not playing him in the playoffs?

How much would you give him?

    I'd go 3.5 for 3 years? Do a one year at 4?

Well, seeing as the Flames are far from a playoff contender, I'd opt to sign him for a 2-3 year deal.  He's only 32 years old.  His previous cap hit was $4.5 with the Ducks.  His stock may have dropped as he was rubbed out by a rookie, but he's also going to be a UFA and one of the better goalies available (along with Miller).  There might be a fight for his services, including a team like Vancouver.

$ amount is hard to predict.  Ramo is getting $2.750 from his previously signed deal during Feaster's tenure.  Hiller is NHL proven, while Ramo has only a shared season under his belt.

I'd probably opt to give Hiller $3.5 - 3.750 x 3 years or $4 x 2 years.  However, it may take the same $ amount ($4.5) or more to lure him to Calgary.

  5. Hiller would be a good fit with Ramo.

Shared duties unless one of them really steps up.

I would love Hiller. He's a solid 1B if Ramo goes down, or has a rough start.  His contract would help with hitting the cap floor.

  6. Stiil not seeing much for any press releases, but I can pass along this this,..

It's from Ian Campell (journalist for 660 news)...

By that it looks like they've decided to move on from big Mac.  I'm glad they've decided to do so.

New backup from FA this year?

  7. Usually Burke speaks with an agenda. My perception of Feaster is he was just trying to tell us how awesome everything was.

Like I said above, showing your commitment to a goalie and preventing a goaltending controversy was the right thing to do IMO and it was the reason for Burke to say those things.

For example, before yesterday there was speculation in the media that Burke was in the running for Reimer. Now the same people are reporting that the Flames are comfortable with Ramo.

I agree, Burke made the right call with Ramo.  He's a very smart cookie, and recognizes how important tempering expectations can be.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yeah, I'm sick of hearing those rumors too.  Please for the love of buddha, Burke better not bring Reimer into this club.  I'm not for being in the business of taking on the Leaf's crease issues.

  8. I think every GM does it to some extent.  But Burke is better than most in trying to manage expectations.  That extends to the fans, players, management, owners, coaches, etc.  Feaster was on the other side of the spectrum.  He was a salesman.

To the fans and the media?  Sure, but certainly not in terms of trying to sell in a deal with other GM's around the league.  He was pretty terrible at that. However, I do feel Feaster used more energy on selling Berra than he did Ramo to the fans.

Ramo quietly showcased his skill to Flames fans (and the rest of the NHL for that matter) without the need for a sideshow announcer to boost his ego.  He's a solid contender and certainly earned his stripes as the #1 going forward into next season.

  9. If we're going to talk about development this season, the conversation is about Ortio.

Yes, Ramo has shown some improvement, I still see him as a backup who occassionally has good games that make him look like a starter.  that is also what his numbers suggest.

The conversation isn't just about Ortio.  Goaltenders are always developing their game, regardless of age.  Kipper developed throughout his whole career with the Flames.  Ramo's developed quite nicely thus far.

After Karri took the crease back from Berra at the end of November he's gone .924%SV, 1.83GAA, 11-6-3 in 23GP.  He's had to adjust to NA ice, and to a different living situation.  Those are excellent numbers for an NHL starter.

No one can stop you from viewing him as a backup, however his numbers and situation suggest he's a starter.

  10. Ok....i have to point out the problem here...I asked if you had an alternative to winning percentage, and you presented me with winning percentage.

I'll give you this....I did not expect it or see it coming :)

The only difference is you're comparing regulation wins to regulation losses, where he wasn't pulled.  Which is not how .500 hockey is calculated.

    Question:   Does 11 + 10 + 4 = 29?

If not, what was the outcome of those other 4 games and how did that come to be?

    By.....whom?

Just wondering, as these are some of the worst numbers of Lundquist's career.  It's almost as if you went and looked for a goalie in a slump?

    http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8468685

Also wondering how you see those save percentages as similar?

    I sincerely don't understand....basically all of them?

    http://www.nhl.com/ice/playerstats.htm?fetchKey=20142ALLGAGALL&sort=savePercentage&viewName=summary

I presented you with your winning percentage that you so nicely like to bring up.  That and age. ,I had nothing to do with it.

If we are going with the stats in the now, and if Ramo sucks, then so does Howard, Miller, Bernier, Mason, Nabokov, and Mike Smith too.  So does Ortio.  There, makes sense right?

Tinfoil hat, the Flames are doomed, and welcome to the next 20 years of rebuild, etc, etc.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's not hard to see how close the %'s are.  If you can't, there's no sense in arguing with someone who can't.

  11. Sorry, when you said "record", I interpreted that as looking at his wins.

I agree that it's not a fair measurement.

But, usually when someone calls a stat poor, they present a better, alternative stat.

What stat are you looking at that makes Ramo look good?

    Joni Ortio:

    Karri Ramo:

    99642b4ff48aa3f2124801c49cf7f935.png

Ramo has played 29 games.  The middle portion of the season, when the Flames were doing horrible, especially on their nice little losing streak, Ramo was in the mix, and still managed a .908 sv% with only 2.66 GAA.  I would say that's impressive for a team that's 25th in the league.  Going by your wins stat, he's won more than he's lost, which is over .500 hockey.

Ortio has been playing well, but with a Flames team that has gone 5-5-0 in their last 10, which is exactly .500 hockey.

For comparible, here is Henrik Lunqvist's season:

    25467046e130e1aadd957b6ea76aa202.png

Ramo isn't far behind in GA, and is very close in save%, with a goalie that is considered the top 3 in the world.  Also, the Rangers are 15th in the league.

So, what stats are you looking at that make Ramo look bad?

  12. The best winning percentage we have is with Joey Mac, 3 wins in 7 games.  Same team.

It's not all about winning percentage. In fact, that's a pretty poor stat to use, especially in year 1 of a rebuild.  Last I checked, it takes a team in front of a goalie to win games.

By your logic, Ortio is as close to Mac as you can get in terms of wins/losses.  Same team.

Ramo is 28, he'll be a tandem for at least 7 more years.  Gillies is anywhere from 3-6 years away from being a starter.  Better get used to it.

And building around Roy is laughable.  The kid is far from talented.

  13. That will be fun!!!   I can't wait.

Ramo is a weak starter at best, to be honest.  So whoever wins that battle next year is okay.  More than likely, split duties with the assumption (hope) that Ortio gradually assumes a true starter position as the season progresses.

And if it takes two seasons, that's okay too.   The kid has 4 years to go before he's the same age Kipper was when he became a Flame.

That's a little presumptuous.  I challenge any starter in the NHL to maintain a better record than Ramo has with the team he has in front of him.  Ramo is an NHL caliber starter and a very good one at that.  He's come a long way from his earlier NHL days.  Put a St. Louis team, Anaheim, or a Chicago team in front of Ramo and he'd be a top 10 goalie in the league.

I know Ortio is your fave, but the fact is, is that both have a very similar style and are both excellent for the Flames going forward.

  14. Was looking at Abbotsford Roster today, noticed not a backup for Goalie Roy. Hope Roy does not get hurt.

Yeah, should be interesting to see what Wardo does for that team.  Things are getting really thin as is, and not just in net either.

I wonder if they pull another from Alaska, or if they borrow from the BCHL or something?  It looks as though the Aces only have one tender as well.

  15. Ortio and the Heat just shut out the Hamilton Bulldogs 6-0, Jones with 2 goals in his first game since being sent down. I knew he would be a huge added spark for that team. Knight with a 3 point night (2G1A), and Granlund with 2 points (1G1A)

Ortio also jumped a few goalies in the standings with that shutout.

Excellent game all around.  Ortio has a bit of a mean streak, which I like.  It shows he's not going to lay down when someone crashes his net.  However, on the play, he was saved of the goal after being way out of position.

Baertschi with a beautiful assist as well.

  16. It's no secret that Berra is the better goalie in one on ones and shoot outs.  However, Ramo retains better vision and side to side ability, which oddly enough is very similar to Kipper's style.  Ortio's style is very much the same as well.

    Those Finns...

  17. Whether we get even an average starter out of either of them remains to be seen....but goalie is far from our weakest link in the organization. When your third string prospect is looked at by other fanbases to be a potential number 1 goalie, it's probably better than people give credit for.

I agree that goaltending is not the weakest position in the Flames' system, but you can't base Brossoit being labeled as a potential #1 by Edmonton as a basis for your arguement.

It's Edmonton we're talking about here.

  18. The Heat have been getting JMac in some games recently.  He's been decent.

Makes me wonder...a bit...if the Flames are hedging their bets.

And, makes me wonder in what direction.  Is Reto close to a demotion, or.....could Ramo possibly have trade deadline value?

    imho, it's all nearly irrelevant.

Only in your dream world JJ.  Only in your dream world.  Don't worry, Ortio will get his chance. :D

Berra and Ramo are here for the rest of the season.
