  1. I'm not just going on Hiller time in CGY; he faded in the playoffs in orevious year.  He lost his spot on the Ducks due to his fading stats.  He will be turning 34 this year, so he is not likely to improve.  The other two goalies have not reached their peak.  They may never reach it.  But, let's face it, Hiller and Ramo are only signed for this season.  If one of them steps up this year, they get an extension.

I agree, HIller has been a great stop gap, but I fail to see how he's a part of this team within 2 years.  His signing was mere positioning for the future to allow some of the kids to develop.  Now that we see Gillies signed and in the system, and Ortio on a one way, I'd suspect Hiller is going to be the one shipped out, regardless of the fact that his contract is bigger than Ramo's.

All of this still hinges on record and play of course.  Realistically, if the Flames top 6 D can remain healthy, the 'tending duties should be much easier this season in comparison, and the D last year were already pretty damn good.

  2. You underestimate what a better D cops can do for goalies. Example Dubnyk in MINN.

Well, it seems we got our wish.  We are deep on D and we have quite the lineup outside the men's room for the last spots.

As for the goaltenders, who would you say is going to be the Flames A/B and the Stockton A/B?  Also, do the Flames bring up Ortio and how long till they trade Hiller/Ramo?  Still nothing solidified.  It'll be interesting to see what training camp brings.

  3. I wasnt thinking....

I was just happy with how well those two were developing.   Maybe I forgot a comma,  or some sort of punctuation somewhere to separate the two subject matters.

    Eh..... Whatevs.   ;)

  4. He is trying to say you need to be 20 years old to play in the AHL (with rare exception). MacDonald just turned 19.

*If that was what you were thinking...

    again I say....."Eh what?"

  5. MacDonald is too young this year to join the Heat, if that is what you were thinking.

    Eh what?

I'm surprised the Flames never took a goalie in this draft.  The goalie prospect pool is looking a little light these days.

I sure hope next draft they take one in the third or 4th round.  Maybe with the conditional 4th we acquired from NSH for Max Power.

  6. Great idea.  If you are up for maintaining it, this would be quite the insightful addition to these boards.  Why not inspect the work of the GM's hands going forward?

Feaster had his many blunders, and his praises.  He's one of the most controversial GM's the Flames have had to date and many discussions and arguments have sprouted from his tenure.

It'll be good to see the progression of Treliving with clearer eyes.

    +1 from me.

  7. There are a LOT of the team coming up on contracts this summer that need to be resigned, I'd focus on those first since Russell has another year on his contract. A little less urgent, but he DEFINITELY needs to be extended.

This summer we're looking at new contracts for Backlund, Jooris, Bouma for sure, likely Wolf and Byron, possibly Ramo and Diaz (though I think Diaz likely won't be signed)

All are manageable, but I expect the first three get bumps in pay.

Then next year: Giordano, Russell, Monahan, Hudler, Colborne, Jones and  maybe Hiller. < THIS is going to be an expensive year of new contracts, but other than Hiller and Jones, none of those guys should be going anywhere. Good think we've kept our cap low.

The cap being kept at a minimum was all for good intention and reason.  I'm sure we'll see some bump in pay, but we'll also expect to see a few players being shipped in and out too.  It's all positioning for the benefit of the rebuild, and for the best development of our young players/prospects.

  8. Four words say you're over-reacting: "Sven's first 5 games"

    5 isn't a word.

I'd like to see 20 starts for Ortio at the NHL level before I'd be singing his praises.  Is he doing a bang up job right now?  For sure.  But I'd be a little reserved before giving him the keys to the mansion.

Hiller is a proven starter and even he fell back to earth after putting on a show in the first quarter of the season.

This discussion is much too early.

  9. Well another Ortio win...If it was not for him last night we lose. So how do you not start Ortio in San jose? If he win's in San Jose does that mean the end of Ramo at the trade deadline? BT has some hard decisions to ponder

Orts most likely starts in SJ, however, even if he backstops the Flames to another win, 3 wins isn't enough of a sample size to warrant trading away one of your NHL goalies.

That decision would be reserved for a timeline much closer to the trade deadline.  However, the topic would definitely be under a microscope in the office.

  10. DET appears to be in the market for a GT.  Howard was stretchered off last night which looks like a severe groin pull.  Their backup GT has been out due to injury since early Nov which leaves them a 3rd string starter and a 4th string backup.  Maybe a deal can be had right now with DET?

I like this line of thinking, however Mrazek has been one of the hottest GT's in the AHL and has been developing steadily for the last few years.

  11. Travel_dude, that's exactly what I think should happen.

I noticed after the third straight game for Ramo, Hartley could have sat him even though he was riding a good 3 game win streak. That 4th game he looked like he was ready for a rest.

The same thing applied to Hiller when Hartley ran with him. The last few games Hiller started giving a bad goal every game.

This is what I miss about Kipper so much.  He was able to do what most people in his position couldn't.  Play 70+ games per year and not even bat an eye.

I miss the quiet spoken Finn in our crease. :(  He had a certain presence about him in his game that made him Kipper.

  12. No complaints here whatsoever.  In fact, I'm quite mystified that the Flames landed themselves into an above average duo that can get the job done.  To be quite honest, many are pessimists when it comes to the Flames' success, but this club has had a few notables land in their laps.  Iggy was one.  Kipper was another.  Both franchise players.  So far it seems that Johnny Hockey is another gem, Gio of course, and Brodie.  Now with a year or two of poor goaltending, the team has found a workable, capable tandem in Hiller and Ramo (Hillmo)

it just goes to show, however, how much of a workhorse and a star Kipper was, that he could take on the workload of 2 guys and have better numbers/record year in, year out.  The guy was a genius between the pipes.  It'll be a while before the Flames see that kind of stardom again.  I'm not so convinced we have that in our system as of yet.

  13. A little off topic but Calgary making the playoffs should be a shoe in for Hartley and the Jack Adams. Gio should easily get the Norris. I won't hold my breath for the Hart, too sexy for Calgary as far as the Eastern pundits are concerned.

Would love to see Johnny get the Calder.

IMO getting the Byng is like getting the Miss Congeniality award. Meh

Brodano... Love that S4xon! Is that your's? Can I use it?

Wish I could take credit for Brodano, but alas, it's been used around the interwebs and hockey circles for at least the last year.

For sure Johnny is known back east, and is quickly making a name for himself in the rest of the countries.

He could take over the scoring lead by rookies with a good stretch of games. Forsberg will likely hit a wall, besides everyone loves a little guy story. His clean play will likely earn him some votes for the Byng.

Brodie will have the toughest time getting votes, as he is unknown by the MSM. He isn't as well known as Gio, and even Gio will be forgotten by some. They talk about Weber like he is a shoo-in every year. PK is too much of a me-first player.

Weber is a good player, but yeah, I hate the assumption that he has a spot nailed down.  However, that's been the same sad story with the parade of pundits on team success too.  They still call for Calgary to fall sooner or later and for the 'good' teams, the 'powerhouses' so to speak will take their place.  They call it "falling back to earth".  I have news for them....welcome to earth folks.

Brodano is the real deal this year, and yes, we have the best 2 defenders in the league right now.  It's giving me an inflated head, but I'll take it nonetheless.

Ladies and gentlemen, your 2014-2015 Calgary Flames.  They are for real.  Get used to it.

  14. The Flames could definitely benefit from more skill and mobility out of their 5 - 7th defense-men.

We can't be too greedy here.  The Flames have a pretty stellar defense as it is, and we couldn't ask for more skill.  I would like to see a tighter game from Engelland.  Smid may not be a top 4 guy, but he's been solid for the Flames since his acquisition, and plays his role well.  He's had to cover a few times for Engelland's mistakes.

I would like to see maybe Sieloff or Wotherspoon come in and fill the role for Engelland for a 10 game span or so.  Test the waters.

Nov 29th.  Wow, 2 line mates equally deserving of the Norris today.

Totals man.  This has been a stellar year for the top pairing Flames duo.  Bro-dano.

I'm hoping the Flames can run away with a few trophies this season:

    Gio - Hart/Norris

    Brodie - Norris

    Gaudreau - Calder/Byng

    Hartley - Jack Adams

  15. Well, Ramo kept it up.  2 doors slammed shut in a row for the Finn.  Keep on rolling Ramo, we need you to keep this team's playoff hopes alive!

Flower, nothing wrong with being excited.  It's been awesome to witness this underdog of a team play so well and intimidate the big dogs.  I'm only hoping the goaltending performance continues from the tandem well into the new year.  The Christmas break can be a killer for momentum.

  16. It's too bad Gio's point streak ended.  But it was another stellar end to a game. Hard fought third, a little flat in the first and 2nd.

Something to note is Wideman's ability to step up when Gio/Brodie don't seem to be lighting the lamp or assisting in doing so.  It's nice to have the options the Flames do in the top 4.

  17. Hartley said in the off-day interview that Hiller was going to get the start again next game.

Interesting.  I thought Ramo would be getting the start, especially after Hiller didn't seem to show up to play in Carolina.

  18. In his last four games, Hiller has allowed three goals on 120 shots with three wins and one shootout loss.

    Last 4 starts: SA: 120, GA: 3, SV%: .975

He won the starting job fair and square.

I wouldn't say Hiller won the job.  He blew it out of the water.  He's been a force in net this season.  Although highly unlikely, as it favors playoff / cup champ goalies (fingers crossed Flames), it would be nice to see him take home a Vezina.

  19. Russell and Wideman work together.  They were good last season before injuries struck the team.  They have been good this season.  They complement each other really well.  I agree that it is in issue that it leaves Smid and Engelland together.  But that is more an issue with those two players.  The second pairing was dreadful when either of those guys was on it.

The Engelland contract is proving to be a huge mistake.  They gave a career marginal third pairing D a 3X3 contract that they can't move.  They might be able to move Smid and bring a guy like Wotherspoon up.  I think Smid is a horrible partner for Engelland.  I think they need to move one of those guys and pair him with a better match.  Either that or bite the bullet and put Engelland into the AHL.

I would have to agree.  In fact from what I've seen, Smid has had to cover a few times for Engelland's mistakes.  I'm also not smitten with Engelland's fighting ability as it seems to have been non-existent.
