  1. It would good IMO if we could use either Wideman or Stajan in a deal to get either Kuemper MIN or Kinkaid NJD.

I'm on board for anything to shed Wideman's contract.  If the target is a viable backup or an up and comer and Wideman plus a B prospect is the price, then so be it.

I believe Fleury and Bishop negotiations are done with Calgary.  I'd be surprised if either of those 2 ended up in Cowtown this season.

  2. Goalie list updated on the OP.

Glad the brass addressed the starter issue with Elliot.  Always liked the guy's playing style, and we'll see how he does with a new coach, and Calgary's D core implementing a new system.

It'll be interesting who they sign as a backup.  I've never been to high on Ortio, while others have. He's had his moments, but I've always likened him to Irving who just couldn't quite grab the reins.

I hope they don't jump the gun and bring Gilles up for a few games.  IMO I'd prefer to play the whole season in Stockton.

  3. I agree it makes a lot of sense. We were talking about that a bit earlier.

Take it for what it is, but Eklund has jumped on this and is rating Fleury to Calgary ad E4.

E4 is practically a done deal.

  4. 13/14 great start.  Last two years, including this year, not good.  NHL start this year - not good.

I think he will be fine as a backup, assuming he can translate this end of season to training camp to whenever he gets his first start next season.  He has Hartley's faith right now, so he has to keep it through those events.

There's two sides to the coin here. Ortio is doing really well as he's had consistent starts and has earned Hartley's favor for the time being.  However, one could argue that he's playing in meaningless games at the end of a season when points don't really count towards the score card.

  5. So your solution is Giordano as the key package piece. Like it or not, I don't see that happening this offseason.

He's not my solution.  I said he was a viable option, and I agree, it most likely won't happen this offseason.

Bennett, Mony, Gaudreau, all are viable options.  So are draft picks.  So are prospects.  So is cap space.  Assets are assets.  It's up to the GM to decide which ones are expendable for a need, and which ones are needed with the club.

What would be your solution to starting goaltender needs, other than hoping Gillies pans out?

  6. How do you see them as possibilities ? what would propose to obtain them ?

Well, it's no secret that either wouldn't come cheap.  Goalies, and starters at that, tend to come at a high price these days.  The Flames do have a solid pocket full of picks they could deal with, and also a few players on hand that could potentially be dealt.  The Flames won't be paired up with Gio forever.  Like it or not.  He's a viable option while his stock is at it's highest.

Bishop has one more year on his contract at nearly 6 mil cap hit.  With Stamkos looking like a possibility of exiting the club, they may look to retool on the fly.  Andersen will be an RFA, and Gibson is already signed long term.  Anything is possible if either the Ducks or the Bolts have needs in other areas and are willing to deal.

I did forget to mention Raanta as well, from NY.  He may be a doable FA signing if the Flames can entice him, and the Rangers don't put ink to paper with him before Free Agency.

  7. well then I'd be worried .. cuz at least 5 goalies on that list have been talked as serious targets for us to acquire as our new #1

The only 2 I would love to see the Flames make a push for would be Bishop or Andersen.  (or Mrazek, but that's a dream scenario lol).

I keep hearing talk from Flames fans about Reimer, but I've never been high on the guy.  If he couldn't make it with the Leafs, he's not going to be much better with the Flames.

Other than the two mentioned above, I don't see much else in the way of future possibilities.

  8. Bad news, but not surprising...   It looked like it was serious right from when it happened...

I hope for Ramo's sake that he recovers fully, and that there is not permanent damage that affects his career...

This pic is the definition of pain...

    1138477-gardien-flames-karri-ramo-quitte

Trainer:  "Where does it hurt, Karri!?"

    Ramo:  "......youreleanaonmhdf........"

Trainer:  leans in -  "What was that??"

    Ramo:  "....you're...leaning...on...my...testic - uhhhhh!.."

  9. Whom exactly(when you reference a lot) were billed as great prospects?

Why, all the best players not in the NHL of course B)

Also, when your "best" assets are Nemisz, Wahl, Negrin, Howse, Erixon (mr. Flake himself), etc for almost a decade.  Then we have a draft problem.  I'd say it's gotten better over the years since then.  The 2000's, minus a gem in Brodie, were abysmal.  Even Bouma - injury laden, and Backlund - injuries and underperformance for most his tenure, haven't lived up to what they were "hyped" as at the draft.

Granted, the draft is nothing but a hype party itself.  See Connor McDavid.

  10. Funny how we started the year with a logjam at goalie and here we are midway through the season with no true No. 1 goalie lol

Personally I don't find it funny.  As Flames fans, we were spoiled with the likes of Kipper and rode him into the sunset of his career.  Now we finally see the benefits of having a 1st line center and star scoring winger, and a very capable and skilled top 3 D core, and we're left with a hole in our net.

    It's unfortunate really

  11. I have to really hand it to Ramo tonight.  Not only did he play great, but he had the foresight at one point in the game to jump in the air and try and avoid a shot from behind the goal line in the corner.

Not sure what player it was, but he was aiming for a bank shot.

  12. I am against carrying 4 "mediocre" goalies...

    • I don't think this is a good time to bring in another "hope he can" goaltender....
    • I don't want to "take a chance" that they might be better.
    • I don't see how any waiver claim of any goaltender can be much more than hoping he is a minor upgrade.
    • I don't care if they are UFA at the end of the season.

Carrying 3 at one time was a bad enough situation.

The only reason I would pick up another goalie is if he is a true #1 or Elite Goaltender. Then let the other 3 fight for backup spots or farm spots, as that is about how well they have played this season.

Well said Deeds.  Great minds think alike. ;)

  13. Found this in my archives.  Thought it would be fitting to post here.

    savegoal.gif

^that would be classified as a softie, see Ramo, Karri and Hiller, Jonas.

Plainly reiterates my point that the tender is the last line of defense.

  14. Would we ? Wideman has been terrible. Russell has been terrible, Giordano has been average, Hamilton was stuck in neutral, Brodie was injured and Engelland was OK. Could both our goalies be better, definitely but the have been hung out to dry many times by an unachieving defensive effort as well.

The other thing I will say is when you really look around for good NHL goalies, I would like to know who people see as being a far better option than what we have and are available ???

I would say so.  The tender is the last line of defense, and of course, we've seen so many softies let in by Hiller, Ortio, and Ramo this season, that most of us fans don't have much faith in our guys between the pipes.  It's almost like I cringe every time the opposition gets a breakaway.

I didn't get that feeling with Kipper in net.  I don't see fans from other teams such as the Rags, the Habs, and the Kings feel that way either.  Sure the D could be better, and they have been abysmal, but with good tending, the outcome would be much different.

  15. It's amazing the dynamics between a good defence core and mediocre goaltending, and a mediocre defence core with excellent goaltending.  Most would prefer the prior, as it almost makes sense that it would outshine the latter on paper.  However the Flames were handed the latter, and as I see it, they had less goals against that the team that is being iced right now.

On paper the Flames should have one of the top D cores in the league, or at least top 5 currently.  However, goaltending has been atrocious at best.  They're still riding a goal differential of -30 here at the beginning of December.  Ridiculous.

If the Flames were able to buy decent tending at the beginning of the season, we'd be seeing a much different team imo.

  16. Gillies is the future for goaltending in Calgary.  McDonald may be a quality AHL'er, a NHL backup or a starter, but that is years away.

He's still in that voodoo age for goalies.

But we can't very well expect Gillies to factor into Calgary this season.  Next year maybe (hopefully).  It would be nice to have a set of developed goalies that can give us better than league average goaltending.

Gillies has had the best development trajectory he could possibly have.  Offload him onto an NCAA team for 4 years and let him come into his own.  Then when he's pro, they place him onto a brand new AHL team and give him the reins in net.

I hope he's down there for another year next season with a few games up.  Literally no rush.

I've always seen Ortio as a better Irving.  Similar height and size, flashes of brilliance (aka shutting out the Canucks last season) but just hasn't stepped up and taken anything from anyone in his tenure with the team.

I still have pretty high hopes for McDonald.

  17. I really dont see the Flames getting more than a 3rd round pick for a goalie, Maybe a 2nd rounder if salary is retained and other assets are involved. Goalies arent worth much.

Not unless they are a Carey Price, Jonathan Quick, or a Tuuka Rask.  Then you're looking at first rounders.

Hiller/Ramo?  Nothing more than a 2nd, and a roster player/prospect.  The team would have to be pretty desperate to pay premium for any of that duo.

  18. Sure, but what does BUF have that we'd want in return?  Looking at their roster, there hardly seems like anything that stands out as an upgrade or decent replacement.

I'd love to package Raymond and a goalie to BUF, but there's nothing in BUF I want to see here.

    Eichel of course...dummy.  Geez

    :P

  19. I agree with your Hiller assessment, and like I said, I'm okay with that.

To assess Ramo and Ortio, it's almost like they're the same guy.

They both cheat off the short side too quickly and they both over-commit too frequently and get scrambling to the point that you wonder if they've lost site of the net.

My biggest concern is, if we are running 1A/1B, I'd prefer 2 goalies with different styles, not 2 of the same.

All 3 have their positives and negatives, it's fairly even.

For me honestly, I prefer Hiller be one of them.

He stabilized it last year, and I believe he's the one that will keep it stable.

Imho, Hartley yanked him from the Anaheim series in Game 1 and turned his back on him. I believe that was a mistake.

At the end of the day, it made zero difference.

Goalies can get angry from a poor start, human nature stuff. They can also come back like a house on fire, but he didn't get the 2nd chance, so who knows. Hartley decided the Ducks knew him too well methinks. I'd have given him a home start.

He got us to the playoffs against all odds, held the fort for the Van series, then Hartley decided not to play him based on 1 start.

Am I mistaken in thinking that?

I've found they are complete opposites.  Hiller is very much a square to the shooter kind of goalie, with a Swiss windmill as his glove hand.  Ramo, I believe has a better reaction time, but tends to be the one to overcompensate when pushing off left to right.

Some are super high on Ortio.  I'd like to see him get a shot as part of the tandem for the year, however, I still don't know if he's quite ready yet.  There are some games I think he's got traces of Kipper in him (he does train with Kip in the offseason), and others where he still looks like a complete rook.
