  1. I can see why the trade took a while. The conditions are pretty complex. The long and the short of it though is the Flames protected themselves, best they could, for either pick being in the lottery. And there is a possibility of the pick being in 2024, 2025 or 2026 https://www.nhl.com/canadiens/news/canadiens-acquire-sean-monahan-from-flames/c-335312254?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=post&utm_campaign=CHCcontent&utm_content=EN-0818-SeanMonahan-Release Here are the conditions associated with the first-round selection acquired by Montreal: 1. In the event Calgary's own 2024 first (1st) round choice is selection 20-32 (inclusive) (following the determination of the 2024 NHL Draft lottery results), then Montreal shall have the option, exercisable until 48 hours prior to the start of the 2024 NHL draft, to exchange the conditional 2025 or 2026 first round choice to become Calgary's own 2024 first (1st) round choice); or, If Florida's 2025 First (1st) Round Choice Transfers to Calgary (pursuant to the conditions on an earlier trade) 2. In the event the conditions to trigger Montreal's option as noted in #1 above does not occur, or Montreal declines to exercise this option, the following conditions shall prevail: A) If both Calgary's own 2025 first (1st) round choice and Florida's 2025 first (1st) round choice (previously acquired by Calgary) are not in the top-10 selections of the 2025 NHL Draft (following the determination of the 2025 NHL Draft lottery results), then Montreal shall receive the earlier of the two (2) stated choices; or, If Calgary's own 2025 first (1st) round choice is a top-10 selection and Florida's 2025 first round selection (previously acquired by Calgary) is outside of the top-10 selections (following the determination of the 2025 NHL Draft lottery results), Montreal shall receive Florida's 2025 first (1st) round choice). If Florida's 2025 First Round Choice DOES NOT Transfer to Calgary (pursuant to the conditions on an earlier trade) 3. In the event the conditions to trigger Montreal's option as noted in #1 above does not occur, or Montreal declines to exercise this option, the following conditions shall prevail: A. If Calgary's own 2025 first (1st) round choice is not in the top-10 selections of the 2025 NHL Draft (following the determination of the 2025 NHL Draft lottery results), Montreal shall receive Calgary's own 2025 first (1st) round choice, and additionally, 1) If Florida's own 2025 first (1st) round choice is not in the top-10 selections of the 2025 NHL Draft (following the determination of the 2025 NHL Draft lottery results); and, 2) Florida's 2025 first (1st) round choice has been transferred to another NHL Club; and, 3) Florida's 2025 first round draft position is better than Calgary's 2025 first round draft position; then Calgary will transfer their own 2025 fourth round choice to Montreal. B. If Calgary's own 2025 first (1st) round choice is a top-10 selection (following the determination of the 2025 NHL Draft lottery results), Montreal shall receive Calgary's 2025 first (1st) round choice, subject to the following condition below: 1) In the event Calgary's 2025 first (1st) round choice is the first (1st) selection overall in the 2025 NHL Draft (following the determination of the 2025 NHL Draft lottery results), Calgary will retain its own 2025 first (1st) round choice and Montreal shall instead receive Calgary's own 2025 third (3rd) round choice and a conditional 2026 first (1st) round choice. Montreal shall receive the better of Calgary's 2026 first (1st) round choice or Florida's 2026 first (1st) round choice (following the determination of the 2026 NHL Draft lottery results) (previously conditionally acquired by Calgary).
  2. I hope it's just the Florida pick (which already has a bunch of conditions attached to it) or Flames getting the condition of taking the better pick. Its not impossible for me to see a scenario where that Florida pick winds up a top 15 picks by then.
  3. I would expect to see something along the lines of the Marleau trade. Similar cap hits and similar situation IMO. Marleau went to the Canes for a 1st and a 7th and the Leafs got a 6th in return. Suspect the final Monahan deal will look something like that although at this point i'd expect some conditions on the picks
  4. Friedman and Steinberg have both been on the fan 960. Sounds like the deal is complicated but right now the expectation is it is likely the Florida pick going the other way and Flames will get something back but they don't know what. Don't believe it is a roster player though.
  5. Kyperos on what he feels the hold up is
  6. At 5 on 5 last year the Leafs had the 5th worst save % in the league. In all situation they were 11th worst. Jack Campbell played in over half of their games. Campbell was only slightly better in 5 on 5 save % last year than Koskinen. Smith outplayed him. Campbell had the 7th worst high danger save % at 5 on 5. Both Oilers goalies were better and the Leafs were one of the better teams in the league last year in preventing high danger chances. Not only is it debatable they upgrade it's debatable they are not worse.
  7. It's only a 10 team no trade. Be a bit surprised if Montreal was on it and even more surprised if it got to this point if he wasn't going to waive because without that trade Flames can't sign Kadri. Well the technically can but they'd be semi screwed trying to get under the cap.
  8. I think this is really debatable. IMO they did not upgrade in goal. I think the Flames are the better team now. My only hesitation on saying they will win the division is it won't shock me if it takes them a long time to get going. They've turned over a quarter of their roster and in so many key spots.
  9. Yup and it's just what I would start with because it intrigues me the most because I think the lineups I posted are the most complimentary in terms of skill sets. Doesn't mean it's the way it has to be. I think there will be a lot of experimenting as there are a ton of options with so many players being able to play different roles. Sutter has to be thrilled at that part.
  10. He is very effective in transition but he doesn't prefer the puck on his stick or rushing with the puck. A lot of one touch passes and puck movement through the zone. I think he'll excel with someone on his line who likes to bring the puck through the zone.
  11. My hesitation with Huberdeau - Lindholm and Toffoli is getting the puck up the ice. No real puck carrier on that line. I like Mang- Lindholm because Mang can carry the puck and he is also very good at getting the puck to the high danger areas where Lindholm goes. I think Mang is an underrated playmaker.
  12. Would continue the theme of me being surprised but I'm not sure I see another RW in the cards. I think they play around with their options as they have a variety of combinations they can work with right now. If it were me right now: Huberdeau - Kadri - Toffoli Mang - Lindholm - Coleman ?? - Backs - Dube Lucic - Rooney/Ruzicka - Rooney/Ruzicka
  13. A first round pick is a bit higher than I thought but needing a sweetener to move Monahan is not a surprise to me at all. That part of this does hurt but they weren't going to get a center of this caliber without giving something up. I also think Monahan was a must move just due to the fact he didn't fit anywhere on the roster. Obviously the cap was required too but I really didn't see Monahan as a good fit anywhere on this roster. Montreal can't take his deal without other moves as thought so this may get complex. Unless they have an LTIR candidate i'm not aware of but my understanding is Price is going to be ready to play this year but perhaps that has changed.
  14. Flames were lacking a center who can move the puck in transition and someone who is very good at distributing the puck. Kadri is very good at both of those things. he isn't perfect and it's a bad contract but the skill set is a close to a perfect fit as you can get for what the Flames needed.
  15. Collecting assets. I'm betting they are getting a sweetner for taking Monahan.
  16. I wouldn't be shocked if it takes a while to figure out Kadri's $. Moving Monahan out might not be enough
  17. It's pretty obvious that Monahan is going to have to go here. Both in terms of cap and roster construction. I would expect the Flames are going to need to put a sweetener in the deal to do it.
  18. Wow.... i am very shocked. I did hear a few days ago that Calgary was still very much a player for him but I didn't think it would actually happen. The contract is gonna suck but honestly I don't' care. The Flames have players in place right now and Kadri fills such a massive need on this club that I'm totally fine with saying the heck with money and worrying about it down the road. The next 3-5 years looks promising for the Flames and as long as they draft well it's not that difficult to work around bad money for a few years down the road. Are they a cup contender? Not sure but they are looking like a heck of a team. Pushing some bad money out a bunch of years is worth it IMO.
  19. NHL contracts are guaranteed and therefore cannot be modified. Well technically speaking they could be but you would have to have the player and the NHLPA agree to it which I would say is a zero % chance of happening. You can have trade conditions where games played and production could affect the compensation but Monahan's contract can't be modified.
  20. Players without arbitration rights have no leverage and no deadline so there really is no motivation to discuss contract. Team probably wants him to take his qualifying offer, he probably wants something different, but they have other priorities to worry about. I doubt its a "hold up" so much as it is just such a low priority item.
  21. Yes you can. if a player goes undrafted but still has draft eligibility left they became an undrafted UFA for the summer. Once they go back to their junior (or any other league team) they are in eligible to be signed until after the next draft.
  22. I get the feeling the Flames a few moves left before PTOs start to come into play.
  23. He's another one I forget about too. Very intersting indeed and that's the one thing I will say about the Flames, which they certainly lack high end prospects or sure things they do have a high volume of potentials. So even a 30% hit rate will produce some NHLers. I definitely plan on catching a few games myself. See what schedule allows and like Sask I'm curious to see what the pricing comes in at but my kids are pretty excited to check it out (as I am)
  24. You are missing quite a few. Flames page has 16 scouts including both Fred Parker and Rob Sumner as asst Directors of Scouting. Hagelin and MacMillan both retired I believe and Jackson and Soltys both left/were let go. https://flamesnation.ca/2021/10/14/flames-add-some-new-faces-in-hockey-operations/ Steve Pleau is a pro scout but I still count 12 amateur scouts and then the 3 directors. What do you mean by thin because that seems to be on par, if not more, than most of the league. All do (at least is my understanding) have underlying areas that they are responsible for. Also worth pointing our Ray Edwards as director of player development and Gelinas as player development coach. Also (assuming they hire a new NHL goalie coach as they likely will) they have 3 goalie coaches and part of going to that model was more hands on development. https://www.nhl.com/flames/team/hockey-operations I think since Treliving and co came on board the Flames development has been good to very good and I think for the first time since probably the 90s you are seeing a consistent and steady pipeline of young players becoming Flames. I think there is some small room for improvement, in particular I think they could use another 1 or 2 European focused scouts that live over there (I believe it's 2 right now but i'd have 4), but at the same time they have some scouting success over there too so the model isn't not working. I think the last point is bang on. The concern with the pipeline being thin I think has far less to do with the fact that there scouting/developing isn't working and far more to do with the lack of picks. From 2017 to 2019 they averaged 5 picks a draft with no 2nd in that time span and only 1 3rd. That is why it's pretty thin right now but thankfully they do scout and develop well because even though they've been lacking in picks I still think their prospect pool isn't that close to the bottom of the league where it really should be, based on the amount of picks. Edit: I'd also add Beck to that list. World Junior invite this summer. Of course no sure thing but I think he belongs on the legit prospect list.
