Bobvrovsky in the 5-6 mill range is not terrible. But do Jackets eat salary AND include him in a deal to move down? Flames may have to give up more. Plus side though, at a 3 year deal the term is very friendly.

Agree on both counts. If that is the ask I walk and acquire someone else. I woudn't go more than 5 years on Bishop and if he wants 7 for 7 i'm guess he'll need close to 8 for a shorter term deal. Bishop is making less and less sense for the Flames to acquire iMO. ONly reason I would contemplate Howard is if Detroit ate salary and his cap hit was less than 4 million.

If it is true Elliot wants out, and it shoudln't shock me, he is the number 1 target IMO. Between style of play, acquisition cost, salary etc he is by far the best fir for the Flames. As a pending UFA the following year expansion draft isn't as big an issue and I also think they can get him to a more reasonble deal becuase he doesn't have the Vezina or Vezina nominee behind his name.

I don't believe so, No. All signs for me point to the flames keeping the pick

Yes you are right and sorry my answer was misleading and I didn't say it right. I don't think they will select more than the minimum, maybe 4 but I don't think I will get they deep and certainly not deep enough where Ortio would be on the radar.

I don't see it that way. Can't actually do an extension with him until July anyway and he has a NMC so your likely going to have to speak wth him anyway about waiving that. I think it's a big step from gettkng basic contract parameters to having an extension. I'm also very confident in the fact that the flames have no plans on using the 6th pick to get a goalie. Only think j could maybe see them doing is trading first rounders with Tampa and even that km skeptical they would do. They want that pick IMO.

I don't mind this. The only reason' i'm not for Bishop is his next deal could reach close to 8 mill if you go based on comps. If there is anyway you can keep him at under 7 mill AAV i'm more interested. I love Bishop I just don't love paying any goalie that much $$

I think if Ortio outplays the new goalie its a situation where 1- you probably didn't give up that good of assets to get that new goalie or 2 - the goalie isnt' good enough to get claimed anyway. Unless you are thinking Ortio is going to outplay someone like Varlamov/Bishop or whatever big name. Stragner things have happend i guess, but I don't think nearly enough of Ortio to think that is reasonably possible. I think is worth remember only 3 goalies are going to be drafted in the expansion draft. with the amount of goalies who could be out there and with Gilles looking auto protected whare the odds/chances Ortio is one of the best 3 goalies available? pretty slim IMO.

Some interesting tidbits on goaltending. Nothing overly ground breaking, but sure sounds like the Flames will leave Buffalo with a new goalie. Pat Steinberg ‏@Fan960Steinberg 3h3 hours ago Conroy says trade is the desirable avenue to acquire a goalie. Won't write off free agency but definitely a second choice. #Flames Chris Nichols ‏@NicholsOnHockey 4h4 hours ago Dreger just had brief convo w/ Treliving short while ago. "It sure sounds like he's looking at Ben Bishop real hard." #Flames #TBLightning Just chatted with Craig Conroy, some good tidbits. Says goalie options have opened up significantly since expansion announcement. #Flames

Not a Spencer Martin fan, personally i'm higher on both Gillies/McDonald so acquiring another goalie in a similar range that takes time away from those two doens't make sense to me. Upside would have to be higher and I don't view Martin as having that high of upside. I also pass on Brossoit. I agree the return of Smid for him isn't great and in that case keeping him would be been ideal in hindsight, i'm not really sold on his upside as an NHL goalie. I think best case he settles into a 1B or backup role, I just havn't see the consistancy you want to see in a starting goalie. I do like Grabauer though and he would be a target of mine. He and Jared Coreau are the two guys that stand out to me when you think of the "young goalies that need a chance" crowd.

I think this is what it is going to take if the Flames are going to get Fleury. I dont' think the Pens are going to move him unless its a really good return. I think they will take the risk of keeping him next year and having him in case Murray falters at all. I think if you want Fleury you are going to have to really pay for him becuae the more I've thought about it, the less sense it makes for Pittsburgh to move him. There are so many ways around the expansion draft for the Penguins and Fleury that they are in no rush. However, as i've said before Fleury himself is more the wildcard and I think the only reason the Penguins move Fleury is if he askes for it, or they get an offer that is really worth it.

They could, but I think that is low. Lundqvist is an 8.5 cap hit. Bishp is better. Bobrovsky is a 7.4 cap hit. Bishop is better Rask is a 7 million cap hit but signed it 3 years ago when the cap was lower. Indexed to the current cap thats an 8 mill AAV Rinne is at 7 mill but again signed when cap was lower. closer to 8 mill AAV. Problem I have with going after Bishop is his market value is closer to 8, not 7. When you combine what you are going to have to give up to get him I agree that he isn't the best target. People will differ on this way so I get that, but for me I don't think you can afford to have so much tied up into goaltending. The Flames can technically make it work after this coming season but with how many holes they have long term its VERY risky and its going to hamper their abilty to build their team
  13. All reports indicate Treliving was in on Andreson but the division premium prevented it and I believe it was Conroy on the radio a week or so ago that said they actually thought they had a deal for Jones but it fell apart at the last minute. Rumors had them in on Talbot. I will give you he is slower and very meticulous. Too meticulous? remains to be seen but so far i don't think its cost them. I don't think they've missed on a deal yet and I think they have potetnial to get an even better deal this offseason. More of a buyers market so let's see.
  14. I'd much rather a meticulous GM than an impulsive one. Deals you rush into don't tend to work where in many occasions the best deal is the one you don't make. Goes both ways. Being patient landed them Hamilton. Personally I think had the flames made the Anderson deal they would regret it. That's a lot of return and cap hit for what I consider an average goalie.

Pittsburgh and Chicago both paid about 6.5 for their goaltending. With Price, your probably paying 8.5 or more after next season. Add 2 million to Chicago/Pitttsburgh you have a different story. Anyway, this is a bit of a pointless argument becuase price isn't being traded. The main point i am trying to make is to me cap is all about allocating dollars and I don't agree with allocating so many dollars to the goalie position. I think you can get championship calibre goaltending for less than 7-8 million and I also think you need high end talent to win a cup more then elite goaltending. What's the most realistic window for the flames to contend? 2-3 years probably right? Well the 6th overal pick has a great chance of being an exteme value contract in 2-3 years as they will still be on their ELC. That's a real key piece for me in contending for a cup.

    Goaltending

I'm not saying it's not a fair deal i'm saying I personally would not do it. I'm not trading for a goalie who has 2 more years on his deal and then is going to need to be resigned at probably close to 8 million per year. Between Johnny, Mony, Price, Gio alone they would have half their cap tied up and that's not even getting into Bennett etc. It's about asset management for me and I don't really find value in trading the 6th overal pick for a goalie. Is Price substantially better than say Fleury? Vasivlevsky etc? the gap from the top goalie down to a very good goalie isn't that large. however, the drop for a top line forward down to an avg 2nd liner is pretty big. I'd rather build a complete team Edit: My bad I forgot Holtby signed an extension for the next 4 year so if we want to get technically I would give up the 6OA for him but it wouldn't happen so its pretty irrelevant anyway.

Skill level yes, but his cap hit and future contract would destry the Flames cap and I don't belive they can make it worth witht he contracts they have and will need to do in the near future.

    Goaltending

There isn't a goalie in the league I think you give up the 6th overal pick for and yes that includes Carey Price. I am pretty confident in saying the chances the Flames trade there 6th overal pick for a goalie are less than 1%.

Schneider by a long shot. Better goalie and in an age range where you get him in his prime. Your are getting Fleury towrads the end of this prime which lowers his value. I"m not shocked the Pens are asking for 6 its called a neogitation. Aim high, but there arnt' getting a first round pick from anyone in the league so if that's what they are looking for then they are prepared to wait it out and either trade him at the deadline or before the expansion draft next year. I think Reimer is back in the conversation as a legitimate option for next season. With how the goalie market is shaking out I just don't see him getting a big term or money deal. There are lots of teams that could offer him a tandem but what are you going to pay for that? for 4-5 million. I think he is likely looking at a shorter term deal in the 2-3 year range and probably no more than 4 million. That's a decent deal for him IMO so he is a decent backup option should the trades not work out.

Depends on the return. If teams are really low balling you then yes I might take the risk and go for it again next season. i think the reality is for Pittsburgh is they've got another year to go at it beofre they will need to make changes. Murray will need a new contract, Bonino, Daley UFa and Doumolin an RFA. Cap will force them to make chances, so i think ehre is alot of logic in them just saying "hey if we don't get what we want what is the value of keeping fleury and going at the up"? I mean whats a 3rd roun pick and a so/so prospect (what some are proposing) to a team trying to win a cup? Losing players for nothing is a reality of salary cap IMO becuase technically you don't lose them for "nothing" becuase you gain cap space everytime you lose a player. I don't know he would, but he may want to play and that would be a good hcance to play. also, whats to say he for sure get's claimed? Buzz around the league could easily be he won't get claimed. a 32 year old goalie with only 2 years left on his deal when they are probably going to be alot of goalies availalbe? may not be an attractive piece. No more than 3 would make sense so i agree there is no guarantee Fleury gets claimed in an expansion draft. As i did said above too, a 32 year old goalie with only 2 years left on his deal may not be an ideal fit for an expansion team. yes they can, but like i said as of today they don't have space. I don't see any teams lining up to trade for Niemi or Lehtonen so unles Dallas wants to buy them out i'm not sure they are going to move anywhere. Agree the need is thre, but is the opporutnity on the Stars side? maybe not.

Based on what has been reported Murray will be eligible. His AHL years count towards his professional playing experience and he will have 3 years experience by the time the expansion draft is held. However, as I mentioned before a possible scenairo that does help them keep both is Penguins could ask Fleury to waive his NMC and expose himself to the draft. Questionable as to whether or not with all the goalies available an expansion team would want to take someone at his age/contract status so they could do that if Fleury agreed to it. Risky, but a possible loop hole for them to maybe keep both while Murray builds his resume as a starter.

He has the no move, but how many teams in the league right now can guaratnee him the starting role? As of today I think Calgary is the only franchise that would be able to acquire Fleury AND commit he would be the number 1 guy. other's team can make room but they need to make room first. Flames don't so if he wants an opporutnity this is his best shot. having said that, I agree with you that he holds some cards and I don't think Pittsburgh needs to trade him either so we shall see. I'll be suprised if the flames don't have a goalie though by this time next week. Everything i've heard or read points to them acquiring one via trade and not FA so I don't think we need to wait long.

Chris Johnston ‏@reporterchris 55s56 seconds ago The AAV on Andersen's new #leafs contract is in the low $5-millon range. 3 retweets0 likes Reply Retweet 3 Like More Between that and 2 2nd round picks, Andersen was a very pricey acquisition. I'm comfortable with the Flames not getting him seeing those 2 factors.

Maybe, but they did give up a first round pick for Lehner who did play quite well when healthy last year and I think they'll want to protect him next year in the expansion draft. I agree they pick up a goalie I just don' tthink it will be a starter or someone who could be a starter Some speculation out there that maybe this was a Jones situation of last year and they might flip him to Calgary, but Leafs have already come out and confirmed he is their guy and have signed him to an extension. 5 year deal, money not yet known.

I view this as good news, another goalie needy team off the market so Flames now have more options and likely lesser of a cost. Other then them and Dallas who is really going to looking at goalies hard this offseason? I'm not a huge Anderson guy I don't think he is anything than an slightly above Average starter and if you think the equivilant of this deal for the Flames would be the 35th pick and their 2nd next year and that Anaheim would have wanted more to trade him in the division i'm glad they didn't bite. Edit: top it off it looks like Andersen's deal is 5 years long and 5 mill per or slightly over. That is alot of both term and cap hit for where he is in his career imo. glad the Flames didn't get him at those 2 costs.
