Building a Cap Team

First of all, I recognize that there is more to building a team then having an effective core.  You need depth, chemistry, coaching, luck, some value contracts, maybe an ELC or two contributing.  But you also need to have some really good top players.  And top players cost a lot of money. In a cap league it is really easy to invest in the wrong players shackling your team.

I started this in the Wideman thread. But I thought I would extend it to all thirty teams.  Here are the contracts on each team 5 million and over.

The Contenders

These are teams that should be competing for a cup

Anaheim

  • 7+: Perry, Getzlaf
  • 6-7
  • 5-6: Kesler, Wisniewski
  • Total Salary: 27.4 million in 4 players

The Dumb Bums

Teams that invested in the wrong core guys and still can't compete.  Examples of what happens when you invest big dollars in the wrong guys.

  • 5-6: Skinner

Toronto

  • 7+: Kessel, Phaneuf
  • 6-7: Horton, Lupul,
  • 5-6
  • Total Salary: 25.6 million in 4 players

What Calgary Should Learn

Simple. Don't invest in the wrong core guys.  Great teams only pay elite players 6+ and really good players 5+.  This is a really tight parity league.  It only takes one bad 6+ million dollar contract to shackle a team.

Given some of the contracts Calgary has coming up (Hudler, Giordano, Wideman, Backlund, Gaudreau, Monahan, Russell, Hiller) we need to make some hard decisions on who we invest in and who we let go.  If the player isn't someone you are building around we either need to limit the term, keep it under 5 million, or not sign the player.

Same goes for free agency and trade.

Wow good work here kehatch. I agree that BT shouldn't get to crazy and that any move should be a fit for the future. I think the system has a good number of inhouse players that could/will emerge for us if not next year the year after. The draft will provide some additional food for thought and the I expect a few trades to occur. I think BT gives Giordano the reward contract and stays clear of UFA's this offseason.

Nice work Kehatch. The other determining factor, which you touched on briefly, is age. What is the age group you're looking at when it comes to core players? 23-32? 25-35? Look at the chart and you see teams like Detroit, Vancouver and San Jose, who are in all respect "good" teams, but need to seriously think about rebuilding. Then you have to factor in the intangibles like character and work ethic. There are so many variables when it comes to signing contracts and Treliving, Burke and Hartley have their work cut out for them this off season. This is year 1 out of rebuild and into the molding stage. We're not a team that's going to be relying on draft picks this off season. Yes our draft is still a priority but I think we're in a position now where trades are going to happen and the core is going to be identified with contracts. I said it in another thread. Generally speaking you do not "buy" core players. Yes it happens, but more often than not core players are developed within or via trade.

Based on this, you don't want a player on your team costing 6+ million per season that isn't someone you are building around. Anyone 5-6 million needs to be a top support player at a minimum.

So the type of players not to go after this off season (of guys that we have been talking about) : Phaneuf, Green, Lucic

The types of players that make sense to go after: Schenn, Franson, Erikson
