New cartoon mascots

I have no idea what happened to the Guardian Project of a couple years ago (http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=66928), but apparently someone else has decided to create new cartoon mascots.  Apparently sponsored by BarDown ("It's time to Bar Down".....whatever the hell that means), you can view them here:

Metropolitan Division --> http://www2.tsn.ca/bardown/Story.aspx?NHL%2bcartoon%2bmascots%253a%2bmetropolitan%2bdivision&id=463731

Central Division --> http://www2.tsn.ca/bardown/Story.aspx?NHL%2BCartoon%2BMascots%253a%2BCentral%2BDivision&id=463932

Pacific Division --> http://www2.tsn.ca/bardown/Story.aspx?NHL+Cartoon+Mascots%3A+Pacific+Division&id=464415

Or, you can view them all here --> http://epoole88.tumblr.com/

Some of them are not bad, some of them are cringe-worthy.  Then there's ours.....

What's the significance of the Yosemite Sam-meets-Lanny McDonald character for the Habs?

To answer this, a brief history lesson first (http://proicehockey.about.com/od/history/f/canadiens_habs.htm)...

Question: Why are the Montreal Canadiens called the Habs?

Answer: Habs is an abbreviation of "les habitants," the informal name given to the original settlers of New France, dating back to the 17th Century. So it's a natural fit for the The Montreal Canadiens, established in 1909 and marketed as a French-Canadian hockey team.

Having said that, the nickname might have been the result of an error. According to NHL.com, the first man to refer to the team as "the Habs" was Tex Rickard, owner of Madison Square Garden, in 1924. Rickard apparently told a reporter that the "H" on the Canadiens' sweaters was for "Habitants." Not true. The distinctive C-wrapped-around-H logo stands for "Club de Hockey Canadien."

Now, if you run with the "Les Habitants" answer, the Yosemite-Sam-meets-Lanny-McDonald character would be a throwback/stereotype to the Jacques Cartier, Upper Canada/Lower Canada era (birchbark canoes up and down the St Lawrence, etc).

OK, I'll stop being a smarta$$ now :ph34r:

One man's 'hideous' is another man's 'hilarious'.  I literally laughed out loud at some of these.

I love the rats on the Panthers character.

What is the Hurricanes character a pig?

North Carolina is renowned for pig farms.  That is the only connection I can understand.  There are 2000 hoggeries with a total of about 10 million pigs.  Can you imagine the smell in some places?

I appreciate the responses.  Thanks for clearing things up.  I thought maybe the Habs were the 'rootinest, tootinest, hardest shootinest team in the league'.

I assume Carolina didn't get any creative input for their character.  Hog farms...  Sheesh.

As for Tampa's new banana, I thought it looked like someone hooked booster cables up to Earthworm Jim.

When Atlanta moved to Winnipeg I send him a message asking if he was going to do one for the Jets . I never got a reply so I assume if there is no money in it then no more updates or anything.
