Way Too Nice

This is way too nice looking to replace the Rexall Place. Lets cut back on budget(still 100 mill short) and get rid of all those windows to start.

The genius of Katz here is that the 100 Mil will have no effect whatsoever on the arena itself. That is the primary piece of the project.

if they don't acquire the cash then it will be elements like the projected affordable seniors complex that will be targeted for cuts.

he will look like he is doing his bit, and the government will become the blamed party for the lost elements of the overarching project beyond the arena proper. I am willing to bet that when the project's construction has progressed to that point it will be a much easier sell to provide that money, because it will be more clearly earmarked as not just more in the pool for the arena, but rather specifically targeted to elements like the subsidized housing for seniors, and students of nearby Grant MacEwen.

Many people view this project as only an arena, but the plan encompasses far more than that. The arena will be built first, and Katz and the Oilers will get their new home regardless of any funding shortfall. the hotels, and casino aspects will be built no matter what. It is the other amenities that don't generate as much revenue that will be vulnerable to cuts. At that point the funding will be found, if the province doesn't provide it directly it will probably come from the existing infrastructure money that municipalities get from the province.

Your telling me that Seniors will be living on the street if he doesn't get his extra 100 million and the casino will go ahead reguardless? Sounds heartless to me when thinking about it that way. :(

hah!!!

awesome.

But seriously, I am going to guess ground will first be broken on the primary components of the deal, arena, hotels casino. The if/when the project needs to be scaled back the as to yet unstarted subsidized housing units will be the casualties.

it will likely be heading into another election year by the time the project reaches the stage where these housing units become a question mark, it will be much harder for Gov't figures to decide against the added funding, when it has a clear demarcation for students and seniors, rather than just being part of a "toy for a billionaire."

i would think calgary would get something along the lines of..

Montana-Barns.jpg

it would fit right in!

Actually if the Seniors portion of your arena don't get the 100 mil that crude was talking about, that is the backup plan for your rink & development in the area. Casino is the far doors.

While we all like to complain about the new stadium in Edmonton being extravagant, it could have been worse...

I still think the newly proposed design for the facility looks like a teardrop, more so than the oil drop the evil empire of Katz claims it is...

Actually, I like it... The tear drop is symbolic of the current state of the Oilers franchise... And it would continue to be a symbol as they realize that they can not retain some of the young guns as their respective ELC's expire and they leave for greener pastures...

With this current proposal for the facility, they are only 100 million short... It was plan B... Plan A was even more expensive as it had a retractable dome...

However, the retractable dome design for plan A, while being even more expensive, would have also lent itself to being of use for other sports, including football...

Now the logic of this, I could understand...

Currently, they are still looking for outside funding for the 100 million shortfall...

Their primary target for this shortfall will most likely be the Federal and/or Provincial Government...

Now... As al taxpayer... I find this upsetting, unless there is a coinciding announcement of equal funding for a new stadium in Calgary...

What is not a well known fact is that Plan A would require an additional 300 million in funding... Again, with the taxpayer dollars being the most likely source for the needed amount...

That said... If those kind of dollars are going to be spent... Why not go all the way and reconsider plan A...

The benefits of the first design have merit, not the least being the fact it would lend itself to being used by both of Edmontons main sports franchises...

Then we have to consider how Edmonton is trying very hard to get more recognition, in the Province, the country, and globally...

I can't say I blame them either...

Considering the fact that they are the Provincial Capital (at least by name)... For how many decades have they been trying to lose the reputation of being Calgarys little brother that has never quite been able to live up to the expectations set by the path of the more wise and astute sibling...

So for once... Maybe we should throw our support out to them and give them a hand up...

Even though they might find it a bit embarrassing that they are 100 million short on plan B, I think we should all reconsider, and look to see what can be done to help them out with plan A...

While it it a lot more expensive... I think it could very well be worth it... Even as a taxpayer, I would throw my support behind it... Hell, I could even say that I would make a point of attending a game from time to time when the Flames or Stampeders were playing there to face their opponents from Edmonton...

I think this retractable dome design does a much better job to embody the spirit of the future for the sports franchises of Edmonton...

So let's get behind this plan and offer our support, after all, they deserve it...

If they are asking for taxpayer dollars anyway, we might as well give them the support and backing to go with plan A...

So... Without further delay, I present the future home of the Oilers...
