You're probably right, if the Rangers preffered the package deal, we couldn't match that at that time. But if a deal would have been possible, I'd much rather have a starter then a second pairing D-man. So back to the now, I think it's a good thing to have 2 young goalies battle it out for the job behind Smith. I think both know that they have to perform better then last year to have a future with the Flames.

Tough to say as it was a package deal, Raanta and Stepan for the pick and D'Angelo. So I wouldn't say Raanta had the value of a top 10pick, maybe it would have been for our mid 1st rounder. Not sure, if the Rangers preffered making 2 seperate deals over the one with the top10 pick, so that's anybody's guess. I think back then the talk was mostly a 2nd and a B-prospect for Raanta from the guys here, I was probably one of the few who would've been fine with dealing a mid 1st for him.

I still think we missed the boat big time on Raanta, to at least get 5 years or more before we'd have to worry about a rookie goalie turn starter. Now we have what 1 maybe 2 years of Smith and no one looks ready to take over ATM. Was Rittich really that bad last season, personally I think he played as good or bad as many other hopefuls in the league. Mrazek, who some wanted here was 90.2%, the highly regarded Korpisalo had a sub 90% season, even a guy I thought could be target for Smith's succession Tristan Jarry had only a 90.8% with PIT. Someone mentioned Pickard, the guy was just the Nr.4 in Toronto after Anderson, McEllhinney and Sparks. Even some younger starters had not great seasons: Allen 90.6, Talbot and Lehner both 90.8%, Matt Murray 90.6% The only backup under 25 who had a really good season is Juse Saaros and I think he is not going anywhere.

I would stay far away from Mrazek, the guy isn't good anymore. Rittich has at least played pretty well in the world cup even if his numbers weren't anything spectacular. He played against some tough competition in close games against Sweden and Russia and made some great saves in the latter game. Had a shutout in his 3rd and last game against France, though he couldn't really show his stuff there, as he got only 10 shots on goal.
  5. Very good decision by the Flames to get Loob involved! As a former player and president of Farjestad he should have excellent connections/knowledge in northern Europe. I remember several years ago, when Steinberg was still in charge of taking calls from fans after the games, he actually was one of the guys in the line. Steinberg was confused and thought that someone wanted to troll him, until another guy from the crew confirmed to him that he's speaking with the real Hakan Loob. Hilarious! Was just cool to witness a former player calling in and showing he still follows the Flames. At that time he was also acting as the GM of Farjestad if I remember corrrectly. I think we should have more than 2 European Scouts! If I go by their names, they have probably scouted Sweden and Finland for the most part. We should have one guy for Russia, one for the Czech Republic & Slovakia and maybe antoher for the Switzerland-Germany area!
  6. Scoring wise yes, but IMO he isn't a very good 5on5 player and he didn't work well with Bennett. And I'd say his play on the blue line on the PP was his biggest asset to the team, followed by his shootout moves.
  7. If that are our guys on the blueline for the PP units, I must question why we re-signed Versteeg?!

It's basically Carolina getting rid of Lack as they don't want to have 3 goalies when the season begins.

Kinkaid is one of those guys who had a real workhorse in front of him in Schneider, so basically impossible to know if he can handle a 30+ game workload unless he gets the chance to prove it. The reason I prefer the cheap one over the more established Bernier, is that I had the hope we would sign a top6 vet and would need the money there. Although with the likely re-signing of Versteeg that might not be happening.

Bernier would be fine as well, but he is probably going to cost you $2mil or more, where I think you could get Kinkaid for half or less then that.

A cheap backup I'd be interested in is Keith Kinkaid, wo played well for the Devils last season.
  12. While I agree we should be avoiding 3 mill or more on a bottom pairing D-man, I'm in favor of signing a capable veteran #5. The thing with Engelland is, no matter how much he played here, that he's no more than a 6/7 IMO who made that kind of money. That said, back then I was all for signing him as an UFA and overall I really liked him here for what he brought. I just never saw him as anything more then a 6/7.
  13. A guy like Quincey could also be a cheap vet that can play top4 in a pinch

I'm pretty sure he was injured last season as well, though he played 55 games so it wasn't anything major.

Agree, I think Smith is not a good target as far as trading for a goalie goes. He might be a little upgrade over Elliott, but his age combined with his injury problems is concerning. As for the deal, I'm not happy with it. I would've prefered to deal one of our overpaid 4th liners instead of the salary retention and I don't like that we gave up another 2nd round pick. It really looks like we're going back to the D.Sutter era, where 2nd round picks were traded on a yearly basis. The only difference is that we aren't even a close contender yet!
  16. I agree that Del Zotto could be a candidat for that Nr.4 spot. I see him in the same range as the likes of Stone and B.Smith, solid 4th's or really good 5th's. Since we have a Nr.2 guy playing on the second pair I'd be perfectly fine with one of these guys for that role. It's just important, that the guy you get can compliment Brodie's style and I think Stone did well there in the 20+ games he played for us. Count me in as someone who wouldn't trade Giordano right now, I think the ideal point would be after the 18/19 season. Although if I do read that correctly on "CapFriendly", then Gio has a full NTC until the start of the 20/21 season. Not until then does the 19 team list apply. When I look at Nashville's Top4, one might be a bit jealous. They've done such a good job not only at developing these guys but also managed to re-sign the guys to longterm contracts at the right time, so that they look like bargains today. Meanwhile we still wait for someone to grab a spot since Brodie. It's really time for a kid to grab a spot! Maybe we should force one, by letting a spot open that the guys battle for in camp.
  17. Thanks for the reply! Obviously, I suggested Postma for that o-zone oriented scenario. I like Del Zotto, but I don't think he would sign under $3m. I'd look for cheaper options like Quincey or maybe Polak. We shouldn't put too much money in our D, especially in the bottom three.
  18. I didn't really want to turn that into a discussion about the Nr.4, even though I get the feeling if the likes of Stone or B.Smith isn't good enough for a 4th D you are more looking for a Nr.3 guy IMO. I just wanted to find out what kind of player would be best to sign for the bottom three. If they only play the 4th line regardless of zone start, we probably still could use a guy like Engelland, but if our top4 takes the majority of the starts in the D-zone and our bottom pair gets mostly starts in the O-zone then we should look for more of a puck moving D-man, for example someone like Postma.
  19. I have a question for you guys: If we can add a top4 this season (whether that is Stone or someone else), what role do you expect for our bottom pair next season? Will they get a lot of offensive starts or do they get a mix of zone starts against weaker competition?
  20. I don't see a risk here. He is still 26 years old if we sign him before July 29th, so he should be eligible to sign a 1 year ELC contract, no?
  21. His profile from eliteprospects http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=18090
  22. No harm in trying someone out, who has done well in his home country. Unfortunately I haven't been able to see a single match of Team Czech Republic at the WC, so I have no clue about him.

If we trade for MAF or Smith then that's the guy we're protecting, so you could be right. Unless Vegas ends up with both Grubauer and Raanta, I don't see them beeing available after the ED.

Well if you trade for the likes of Fleury or M.Smith you pretty much have the plan that this is your Nr.1 guy. At this point I don't see the need to give up a 2nd round pick or more to trade for Grubauer or Raanta just to be a backup. I think if you aqcuire one of them, then you do that with the confidence that they are going to be your Nr.1 guy.

I agree with this, especially the last part! The more I think about it, we should definitely try to trade for one of the younger Backups with starter potential.
