Should have put the in the post. Of those options I mentioned, the only one that could have a chance of working was the SO one. Un Berra's case, I think he could only be good if he played the majority of the game. Going in cold would probably not work very often.

Maybe Hartley could try Berra for the 1st period, Ramo for the 2nd and 3rd, and put Berra in for any shootouts. Or replace the goaltender as soon as he lets in one because they seem to come in bunches.

I can't put my finger on why this team has such issues clearing the zone. We cycle the puck in the offensive zone really well, and can win a game (almost) on that alone. We seem to get into situations where we spend more than a couple of attempts getting the puck out. We get control, put it up the boards weakly where the opposition is. Or we try a short pass to a forward where it gets turned over. More times than not, this results in a whistle (followed by a faceoff loss), a penalty, a scoring attempt, or a goal. Getting Gio back coincided with the goaltending improving, but the same gaffs are being made. Too many minutes played by some D? Players being winded after a long cycle in the D zone? This happens almost every game, whether winning or losing. Like I said, can't isolate the cause. Hop Hartley can, although he hasn't solved it yet either. Do we need a 3/4 pairing playing 5/6 roles, and thereby sharing the minutes more evenly?

My point was not blaming Berra for the loss. You can't win many games 1-0. Calgary had Boston on the ropes for much of the first two periods. The team sat back and let Boston build momentum. Colborne trying to do a simple flip turned into a penalty. Brodie left way too much of a gap on the go-ahead goal. A lot of small things that mean nothing if the Flames have scored more than one goal. But, Berra absolutely has to make that save to give the team any kind of chance, that late in the game. He has let in similar goals before. The book on him would be to shoot high glove side, between his body and the post. He has to know that, and change that one part of his game at the minimum.

The strange thing about Flames goaltending is that only Ramo and JoeyMac have won two games in a row. Berra gets a win and follows it up with a loss (or 3). Berra played really good against the Oilers, but was helped out by the post on more than one occasion. Against the Bruins, he faced few shots through the first two periods, then managed to give up the go-ahead goal in the usual fashion (between his body and the post). The defense was bad in the third period and it looked like the offense was shut down, but the goalie has to make that one save at least. I don't mind the concept of going with the hot hand, but with Berra, there is only a one game hot hand. He plays good for 2 out of 3 periods, but tends to give up multiple goals in short periods of time.

Looks like Berra gets the start against the Briuns. "Hot" hand wins out over playing Ramo for a stretch. The problem I have with Berra is he will look ok-to-good for a game then get blown out in the next. Ramo played well in his last 3 games, apart from a miscue behind the net.

With both goalies coming off good games (Ramo 3 games 4 GA, Berra 1 game 1 GA) who do you think Hartley will go with? Does he apply his rule about giving a goalie a string of starts (11 of 12 for Berra), or does he go with the "hot" hand (Berra - 1 win).

No, those don't include any of his games as part of the Heat. They are only OKC numbers. Check it out. Most games he let 4 or 5 in, except for his wins. I would say they have already screwed it up by playing him. He clearly is not ready yet.

There are a few teams that have a 1/1a goalie tandem; that is not a major problem. What is a problem is running goalies without using a logical approach. Play a guy 8 games, no matter how bad he plays. Play the next guy for 8 games. The only battle is in Hartley's mind. I think he uses an 8-ball to make decisions.

Hartley is not dumb. He knows how it looks to play Berra after some of those losses. He recently said he wants to play Ramo for a string of games much like he did with Berra. LOL. He also was quoted recently saying JoeyMac is still in the running for the started goalie. What that says to me is that he is playing Ramo until he blunders enough to send him down for JoeyMac, our savior.

So, was he brought in before Kipper's nightmare season? Can't remember. Would Kipper have even bothered listening to him? I would like to see him replaced, since we haven't had much success in replacing Kipper yet. Even if he is useless, he won't get fired during the year, though.

Did you actually watch any of the games that Ramo won? I say that because he was a big reason they won in LA (both times). Againt Washington, he played pretty well, limiting OV and crew to 2 goals. I agree we should rid ourselves of Joey, but I think he is a placeholder until either Roy is able, or until his contract is up. There have been so many B2B games for the Heat that Joey is playing to spell off Ortio. Not great, but they want to give him the odd night off. So far, it seems to be working with his 9-1 record.

Yes, I remember Hartley saying those things. I find it strange that he is talking about Joey again, after not a lot of talk about him being demoted. Berra is up now, and I read somewhere that his status is waiver eligible, so we are kinda stuck with him. Ramo could be sent down, I think. That doesn't make much sense though, considering he is no worse than Berra. If anyone is called up soon, it will be Joey I think. Ortio may get a call later in the season, if the Heat are well situated for the playoffs. But it probably suits him better to finish the year off in Abby, and play for the Calder Cup. He can come in next year and win the job if he is up to it. By that point, Berra or Ramo will be traded or not re-signed. Berra could also end up back in Abby, if there is any value in that. Gillies is still at least another full year away from pro hockey, IMHO. He is still just in his 2nd year, so he could play another year, get a chance for a title and possibly the Hobie (Johnny H is most likely the guy this year).

Hartley made an odd statement on the matter: “Karri Ramo will get the start,” coach Bob Hartley said. “I’ve said it, I remember. We will probably not announce a No. 1 goalie all year. It’s going to be a battle. I’ve said it from Day 1, it’s basically a three-man battle. Joey MacDonald is part of the mix and right now, we go with Karri and Reto. They’re doing good and Kari was excellent in LA.” Kind of weird that JoeyMac is somehow back in the mix. I guess it is just Hartley saying that Ramo is far from his first choice, so we may get back to Joey getting a bunch more starts and Ramo getting demoted.

It was known before the Cali trip that Ramo would start against the Kings. Second game of a B2B. I don't really think the Dubie situation is a good comparable. Backman was injured, and LaBarbera was just plain bad. Bryz needed time before he was going to be ready for the NHL. Ramo had similar numbers to Berra, but Berra kept getting the starts. But, it may turn out to be a meaningless discussion, as Ramo could indeed get a few in a row, especially if he wins the next game or two. I would prefer that they sit Berra for a few games, because I am not a big fan of the out-of-control saves he makes. Ramo is more conventional.

I think it is more a case of Hart-ocracy; only certain players are capable of being sat.

The coach's decisions have not helped the goalie situation. He should have left Berra in the AHL to develop properly, and had Ramo get the lion's share of starts in Calgary. Instead, JoeyMac gets played until he proves he is not the right choice, and Ramo has to sit during this period. Berra gets brought up and has one good game and immediately is the starter. It's a little difficult to know what we have in Ramo at this point. Berra should really be back in Abby learning how to play in his crease.

Looks like Hartley goes with Berra against the Ducks; doesn't matter really, since we have won there in this century. Ramo gets to play against the Kings, which he had his first win against.

Berra is a bit like Tim Thomas and Marty Brodeur combined. Unconventional at times, with him flopping around or sliding way out of position to overplay a shot and making a great stop; and the odd amazing padd stack type saves. Both of these things put him out of position, and can lead to a wide-open net, or a simple deke to stuff it in. He plays big in the net, but leaves some holes(short side post).

The point of Brossoit being part of the package was that he was the big piece of the trade. Horak by himself wouldn't get you Smid. I doubt Brossoit ever gets more than a handfull of games for the Oilers. Maybe someday, he will show that he can play at the NHL level, but I doubt it will be with the Oilers; they will trade him for parts. He will probably end up somewhere east, and get lit up on a nightly basis, then back to the ECHL.

Hartley has said numerous time that he sees things in Berra, and has since his days in the Swiss league. He also said he will give Berra every opportunity to show he is a starter. That just doesn't sit right, as it ignores a goalie that was used sparingly so far; how do you even know Ramo's value? Hartley started JoeyMac in bunches and played Ramo more like his backup.

Kipper was a great, athletic goalie (who smoked like a chimney). He was almost perfect on 1st shots, but got out of position on rebounds because he went down too early (see 1st shot). Against a team like Vancouver, he couldn't stop the cross-crease passes between Sedin/Sedin/Burrows, so he was sometimes lit up. Also, because he was small-ish, he had a lot of room over his blocker; most nights he could easily deflect with blocker or stick. Two years ago, he had a really good year, with adequate defense. Last year he was out of game shape, and was injured later on, so we never got the "normal" Kipper SA%. Berra (and Gillies) both are big guys, so they have the advantage of defending the top half of the net, even when they are in the butterfly. Even Ramo (6'0") to a certain extent. Right now, both Berra and Ramo are fine for a rebuilding tem. They will both get better with time and more starts, so I don't worry so much. Either (B/R) could become elite; we just don't know with less than 10 games each.
