You want them back at the table. Cant' get a deal done if you are not talking.

Let's see what this amounts to, but it's hard for me to get optimistic. They were really far apart last time and not just even in terms of numbers, philosophically as well, and so far CSEC has been very unreasonable in their demands. I'm not sure the City coming back to the table is going to make CSEC soften and until they do I don't see much hope for a deal.

Downtown sucks for everyone in the burbs or surrounding communities.  So what’s your point?  There is no perfect location.

I know for sure he was 1st line with Toews for a while, I'm just unclear on the bulk of his season.

Mangiapane's usage was retarded, he created a few chances right away, but you've got him with low talent anchors.

The terrible part of that is you put such low expectations on him, for him it's gotta look like little faith and he'll get little chance.

    Which is what it was.

Peters seems to have a different attitude, at least from his comments like Anderson was a PP guy in the AHL so should be able to bring that, Brodie possible RD....   I’m hopeful that he gives guys a chance where they belong.  I guess the very first opportunity we’ll get to see him in any capacity will be development camp in July.

BT could have tried to help instead he did practically nothing.

Other teams were able to find help for their playoff runs.

    Paul Stastny - Jets

While the Jets pretty much had a playoff spot tied up, Laine was injured. Fit was good.

    Evander Kane - Sharks

We had the opportunity for him and it ended up, he did not cost the Sharks much. In the close race in this division He was a really nice pickup, even if he turns out to be a short term pickup.

    JT Miller - Lightning

12 point in his first 11 games when traded.. Those pickups never work at trade deadline right???

BT could have done more.. waiver claim and 4th line center they only played the last what..9 games when it was pretty much a sinking ship?

Let's see, what do we the fans know now that only the team knew before?  Your 1C was hurt and playing through multiple injuries after getting shot up before every game.  Your 1G was seriously injured and instead of day-to-day that was put out for the media he'd be out for more than a month.   Your 2RW was also out injured, and your 1RW was playing through an injury as well.  Of course everyone knew their 3RW was injured from near the start of the season and had already (?) been shipped off to Europe, and their 3LW/RW/PP specialist was recovering from surgery and never would make it back before the end of the season.  What we did not know then was that our 2LW/PP demon and emotional spark plug would get injured and miss the last month of the season.  There was probably more.

In spite of all this, the team was sitting in a playoff position, even up to 2nd in the Division but the competition was fierce with multiple good teams going to miss out and it seemed like every single game was a must-win.  Now that I'm sitting here 20:20 hindsight I'm pretty sure it would have been apparent that our chances were pretty dismal and that throwing away more high picks for a top-end rental was foolhardy.  Hmmm, I guess even in retrospect BT did a pretty fine job at TDL.

    Not everything is the same.

Flames did not threaten to leave.  That is just a reality if you can't continue to operate out of an aging building and you can;t get any traction on building a new one.

Both sides used the media to further their cause.

What I don't like is self-serving politicians.  Use language strong enough for the supporters that don;t want any public money spent on anything but social progams.

Use language subtle enough that you don't PO the Flames supporters.  Make it sound like the owners are money grubbers.

Use a vision of an arena district based on some mystery arena in your election platform.

The owners walked away because the counter-strategy was in a complete other direction and there was no movement.

I don;t like King, nor the timing of the original proposal, but at least it was a proposal based on needing to upgrade 2 facilities and build a 3rd one.  And it made use of an area that needs to be fixed.  The rejection was based on location (cleanup costs the excuse) and not wanting to spend money on a field house.

Yes, good points.  I still believe the Flame's original proposal is the best long-term solution for all of Calgary (albeit financing issues aside), but you need some leaders to step up or it'll never get done.

You think what you want. I pointed out why those playing were where they were for a reason and it isn't like there isn't a progressive plan for these AHL players. Where no one is knocking the door down having players such as Bartkowski and Hamilton eating popcorn is the right way to go. Who are you pointing at for incompetence or poor play on the main team that you would have exchanged one of our AHL players for this season ?

Mac, You agree with the way it played out with personnel but not with results.  Don’t you think there is a connection?  Virtually every AHL guy that got called up “earned it” prior to the call, as well as deserved to play when called instead of sitting to allow games for Bartkowski... Brouwer, Stajan... do we really need to go over the same things again and again?

The essence of the Warrener comment is playing the best players vs best development, and individual player motivations.  Sure there are valid arguments each way, but to me if there is no valid competition from below it breeds complacency, which is just what Warrener said.  I think you can make a strong argument it has in fact happened with the Flames.... just another thing that needs to be addressed.

Warrener got to where he did by hard work, never the best player on the ice. I would say in this case he hasn't taken the big picture into account with mention of the players from the AHL. I have no problem with sending Hamilton packing because we had a number of players to work in on the 4th line better than him. In regards to defense Kulak was te project this season while Andersson and Wotherspoon were a pairing that was developing as planned in the AHL. Bartkowski was not harming anything being the 7th man,

No, disagree 100%, Warrener is right on.  When you reward incompetence/poor play while at the same time ignoring stellar play at lower levels you are responsible for the attitudes of complacency that develop.

where do you get "overpaid over the hill vets " from "character players with a winning pedigree"..?

Its not the top line players that push you over the edge ..many are found in your bottom 3 the player that Edmonton likely misses the most from last season and Wpg is benefitting from this season is Matt Hendricks .. dude makes 600K.

Hudler earned his money until the last year of his deal..  Frolik is still earning his.. Versteeg when he is healthy earns his ..

Edmonton's big fail from their 1st round pick bonanza years was not surrounding them with players that know how to win

There will be a number of these options available through one avenue or another that will not break the bank

    Brouwer, Jagr, Stewart, Glass, Bartkowski...

Other thing to consider is at NO point did her EVER label us a cup contender

he said it was after last year , when we made the playoffs ..making is no longer good enough .. raise the bar . So assembled some changes that was designed to have a better result , meaning not only make the playoffs , but win a round (and then hey , see what happens )

This team took a step backwards, he now needs to analyze why and adjust accordingly .

I'm sure the feeling was that the improved D and goaltending would allow more room for the forward kids to develop.. win games 2-1 or 3-2 , and not have to try and win 5-4-- that was derailed by nowhere near the D results and atrocious powerplay.. i firmly believe with even a middle of the pack powerplay , that would have made the difference in itself.

I also like his term of Emotional investment , as opposed to character .. why do we crumple , we have stanley cup winners in Frolik and Versteeg ..Hudler when he was here and good, came with a winning pedigree from Detroit.. that helped Johnny and Mony ..  Jagr in his short time here brought a winning attitude that rubbed off .. the rest don't know to win cuz they never have .. we need an injection of some character players with a winning pedigree at the NHL level, who know all about locating that next gear when you think you're already giving it all you have

Oh boy, more over-the-hill, overpaid vets.  Yikes, will we never learn?

I don’t believe that the team was “fragile” because of too few vets.  Rather it was because of poor coaching, promoting guys even though they did not deserve it, lack of accountability and developing a system that targeted effort and not results.  In addition planning to win by just getting to overtime then letting a couple skaters get the win rather than learning to crush teams when they were down.  The litany of bad management and coaching on this team is extensive, including trying to build around too many vets that should have hung em up years ago.

Man, some of you guys sound like BT... can’t understand why we failed...we have such a great D... unprecedented bad luck.... we were one of the leagues best Possesion teams.... and on it goes.  Give your head a shake.  Flames had nearly the worst home record in the league.  PP was terrible almost all year.  How many starters that could score a couple goals all year?  Terrible goal differential all year long.  Never scored a goalie-pulled goal all year?  Brouwer was our best right shot forward all year?  Coach takes months to make a move that was obvious in days.....

I think you have to give BT more credit than you have here. Even he had to have learned somethings from this season. If he truly believed he had a team that would challenge for a SC then yes change him because he is delusional. Now if he steps back and takes a rational approach to analyzing all the why, what, where and how the season went the way it did he will come out a better GM. I believe it starts with him being real about his own decisions and thinking.

I agree that is how he SHOULD be thinking, but pre-season statements about being Cup contenders, and in-season bafflement about home woe because Corsi, and now seeming confusion paints a different picture.  Up until recently I would have agreed with you.  Hopefully I’m wrong.

The Fan960 interview really has me concerned.

The questions were easy to avoid direct answers to.  Nothing hard hitting at all.

I get he won't tip his hat but honestly, if you don;t have a clue to the problems, waiting till after garbage day, and after the emotion is gone is not going to reveal the answers in a bowl of alphabet soup.  You have to ask the coach what he thinks in a few days?  The Stajan's and Brouwer's are going to provide you with that great insight?

Maybe it's all smoke and mirrors, but if nothing changes between now and next season, we are in for more of the same.  We aren;t just a good team that hasn;t quote reached our potential.  Corsi number are nice if they aren;t achieved by not getting quality shots and just passing around the puck.

Yup, unfortunately it is becoming clearer by the day that BT is also in shock and believes we had a great team and somehow just missed.  He’s still hung up on the Corsi lie and so unless he has a revelation soon, he’ll end up the biggest problem.  That’s bad because it’ll be more of the same plus big deals for all the wrong reasons...

If I had to pick one of Rittich or Gillies to backup next season, I would pick Rittich.

Gillies is in a tough spot because he is RFA this summer.  The Flames have Mason McDonald signed for next season but Parsons and Schnieder both need to turn pro and need playing time.  I feel like bringing back Gillies would stunt the growth of one of those goalies who should share starting roles in the AHL.  And from what can be seen, both have higher Ceilings that Gillies right now.

Smith, Rittich, Gillies, Parsons, McDonald and Schneider.  We have three teams and 6 goalies to accommodate.  I don’t see the problem.  You can rotate guys around based on their play.  If you give Schneider the ECHL, then yes, we need to drop one.

To me Rittich was very good as a backup but failed as a #1 starter, the same as happened in the AHL.  Gillies is developing still, as is Parsons.  They are the keepers.

There is zero point in having a discussion with you. All you will do is get mad, yell back and provide no facts or data. Your opinion is your opinion and I respect that, but that really isn't anything to discuss here.

Yes I think Treliving should remain the GM. All GMs make mistakes, all GMs make big mistakes the key is to learn and grow and i've seen him do that. Give me a GM and i'll show you a big mistake, probably more than 1. Flames need to stop with the knee jerk reactions and finding a scapegoat for every season. Successful organization do not do that.

I agree BT should get another chance, but, to be sure BT owns this mess and its his fingerprints all over it.  He came in and wanted a Corsi possession team.  He's got it. He went all-in this season and this is the result.  BT is great at contract negotiations and drafting too, but outside of that he's been meh, at best and verging on terrible.  Just like the team , the gM/management need to be firing on pretty much all cylinders to be successful.  BT is not.  GG HAS TO GO, at the very minimum, and let's give BT another chance and see what he's learned.

Maybe I just had higher expectations for him.    I would like to see top 5 by the end of this year.   There was a time when he was extemely, extremely, highly rated.   I would like to see him reclaim that.

He is close but not there.     I think he has the ability to be the best goalie in the AHL.  I would settle for top 5.

I'm certainly nowhere close to counting him out, I just think he can do more and needs to do more.

As many have said before, goalies are interesting animals.  Just look at Matt Murray with Pittsburg.  A couple great seasons in the AHL and playoffs with Vezina winner Fleury and a powerhouse team beside him, now he’s stinking out the joint once Fluery is gone and he is carrying all the pressure.  You could say the same about Edmonton’s keeper.  I think Gillies is doing just fine, getting better each year.

That's the theory.  I don't think JT has any interest in fixing the problem, since creosote doesn't vote, and it's west of Ontario.  Notley won't do anything alone.

Doubt it would happen, but Notley might garner a lot of Calgary support and win again if she threw her support into the Calgary clean-up and renovation of the riverside district....

And where is Brodie during these times where his only play is off the glass.

Not supporting him I guess.  It's great to think offense, but you need to recognize the time to do it.

Honestly, if they are keeping Brodie on LD, then move Hamonic up with Gio.  Have one unit that can shutdown the best players.  Play Kulak with Hamilton, since he's pretty smart at knowing when to back off.  PLay Brodie with Stone as a third pair, or at least no more minutes that Hamilton.  Brodie is not currently the 3rd best player out there, so he should not be playing the 2nd most minutes.

I like those pairings and think they are definitely worth a try.  At the very least it'll serve notice that things need to change and get the players' attention.  It'll also allow a much better evaluation of Hamonic which we also sorely need.

Hamonic has been the only one with nutz. Stone seems to have the look of determination in his eyez, determination that you need in the playoffs. Kulac displays the same. We all know Gio will give his heart in the playoffs.

I see what looks like laziness or some kind of egotistical hyper-composure in some of the others.

Last night Hamonic was the victim of zebras setting an example of the 'new' era of rules (Rules that are spoiling the game in my opinion, but that is another topic). Checking to the head, BULL.

While on the zebras, that was some high stick from Frolic:) Another side point: the dramatics after a stick taps a player is suckatash whimpering embarrassment.

Drifting even further off course, how about J Thornton supposedly trying to crush that Washington player's head into the boards last night. I watched it over many times to try to see it. BS. The SJ coach crying about a 'premeditated attack' is more girly stuff. This is all my opinion, and obviously will differ with many other's.

Agree fully, and will even go further with the obvious trip on Jagr in the corner of the O zone late in the game, with the ref looking right at it.  As a fan this is totally frustrating.  It would be nice to know there is some accountability of the refs via the league but I don't know of any if there is.

That's a different thread, but almost nobody is "happy" with our goaltender pipeline right now.   That's not just me, that's the majority.   If we're talking about a replacement for a starting goaltender, right now the only remaining prospect in our pipeline with that projection is Parsons.   That's it.   And he's struggling.  As well as being a long ways off.  He will never replace Smith directly.  Someone else will do that and it likely won't be anyone you mentioned above.

I believe you are very far off as far as the goalies go.  We have a solid and very promising pipeline and with Rittich now up in the NHL as a backup we have a clear path towards bringing them all along over the next year or two, even ignoring the possibility that Lack comes around with more games.  The team appears to have misjudged our current strength, and the need to solidify 4D but even that can still come around with perhaps a few tweaks.  Honestly, I believe we have the pieces in place but the leadership and direction (coaching) isn't helping matters at the moment and if that changes, or the team somehow comes together we can still make it interesting this year.  Face it, as much as the team is inconsistent we are still only 1 pt out of a playoff spot.  Frustrating yes and looking like we are heading in the wrong direction but NOT the end of the world.

The guys on the 960 morning show mentioned this a few days back and I tend to agree. The Boston Bruins have up on a 21 year old RH shot D man in exchange for nothing but futures. At the time it felt like the Flames had made out like bandits in the deal. But maybe Boston saw something in him. Warrener mentioned that he doesn't think Hamilton cares, which I absolutely agree with, Hamilton shows absolutely nothing that makes me think he is a competitor. Not to mention we have to have his brother on the roster to keep him happy.

Absolutely.  We should dump GG and get a hard Hash Rate, yet enlightened coach, send Freddie to Stockton and bench whoever doesn't want to play tough.

It's too bad we don;t play prospects.  Mangiapane, Andersson and Kylington are off to a quick start.

They should get help from Janko soon enough.

First home game for the kid and he gets the bench.

He wasn't the best player out there, but there was no reason to bench him.

Stajan was 1/5 on the dot, and that doesn;t include the many times he was tossed.

Janko was 5/8, 4/4 in the O-zone.  Doesn't that tell you something???

Yeah, becoming less and less enthralled with GG every passing day.  Good to see him get agitated but how he handles players doesn't seem to be working.  Sending a message to Jankowski seems premature, especially when he should have been ripping about a third of the team before he even thought of Jankowski.  Still hard to believe Bennett 0-0-0, how does that happen when I think he's played some good games?   Something has got to give soon, results count.

Ignoring the previous decade of goalie mishandling, how has Gillies or Rittich shown that they are ready right now.  A good game by each of them early in this season.  Great. How does that help us this year?  Neither is ready to be a starter.  Neither has had a consistent enough effort to be ready to sit on the bench for 4/5 games.  We only saw NHL games from them in meaningless games last year.  I would rather that one of them have a consistent 1/2 season and take the job from Lack.

I don't think the Oilers are feeling very good about their tandem this year.  Talbot has looked shaky.  Brossoit had 1/2 a game against the Nucks where they had already won the game.  Stopped 6/8 shots against the SENS.    Maybe he is their future, but they gave up a lot for Talbot; the guy that brought them to the 2nd round.

Do we bother to come in here and critique every game that Smith plays?  No.  Those are in the GDT.  He stunk against the SENS.  He was bad against Connor McDavid, letting in a breakaway and a tap in on a second opportunity.  Many of us spent a lot of thread space criticizing the Smith trade.  It's at least fair to give him some props for facing 40 shots a night.  Will he win us the cup this year?  Anybody's guess.  The problems this team has won't be solved this year in nets.

Nice discussion about kids, but you’re making me laugh saying Smith stunk against McDavid and Ottawa.  Let’s see, he stopped 2 of three breakaways against McDavid, and let in zero stinkers against Ottawa.  Sometimes, when you let great shooters, like Hoffman and Stone and McDavid have wide-open point blank shots they score, and the “fault”doesn’t actually belong to the goalie but to the players in front of him.
