Who would give you confidence ? I am not going dispute you but every year is different. I think we are seeing a distinct effort to get us good experienced goaltending until such time as we get to our own prospects.

There is so many options out there. I dont really understand the problem with smith or lack. I didnt love the smith trade for the assets we gave up but at the same time hes a better goalie then elliott.

I agree, so many fans think they are better managers of the purse than the GM actually doing it. I would dare guess management has looked ahead for possible planning moves they could make. In the meantime nobody should be complaining about what BT has put in place over the past few weeks.

BTW I will mention this here, I have been really impressed with the reaction of the players coming to Calgary and the comments about out first class organization. This is a huge compliment for how BT must go about his business. You always want players honestly about being with a new team.

Also I'm not worried about Brouwer and fully expect him to be much better this coming season.

I agree completely. I dont honestly care if brouwer is better(id love it if it happens), but at the end of the day im not going to worry about his contract arm chair gming or not, I dont think its the end of the world. I get that people dont want to see stajan on his contract, or bouma, brouwer, engelland(when he was here), stone, etc but its getting pretty ridiculous, I dont expect BT to lose any of our core guys over those players.

    Next year....

22m with 5f, 5d and 1g signed.  Have to fill it out with deals for another 9F, 2D, and 1G.

3 RFA's to sign this year.

Let's be honest, you can't just play all AHL players to fill the roster.

    the following year....

28m with 4f, 5d and 0 goalies... Have to fill it out with deals for another 10F, 2D, and 2G.

An additional RFA to sign, plus Backlund's deal kicks in.

So next year if we sign bennett and ferland for a combined 5( which is probably over the top but sure) and backlund at 6, that leaves us with 11 million for 6 forwards 2D and 1 goalie. Lets go out on a limb here and assume we dont spend more then 1 million for our bottom pairing D men, that gives us 9 million for 6 forwards and 1 goalie. Im going to assume we bring in some guys from the AAA, which is fine not loads of space but we have plenty for the important players. Especially with a d corp like that, and mony, backlund. bennett down the middle who cares. I forsee we probably trade stone or backlund as janko/andersson probably to come in by next season, which gives us even more cap space.

If brouwer can rebound, the deal is fine and if he doesnt oh well, the team will be fine going forward.

Paying for playoff performance and supposed grit.

    That's the issue.

He shows up against Anaheim or whoever, then the regular season can be somewhat overlooked.

Look at the long term impact, not just this season:

    Backlund re-signing

    Bennett

    Tkachuk

Smith a FA in two years.

We will have 22 million in cap space next year so is that going to prevent backlund from resigning? Obviously that doesnt include the bennett bridge deal or ferland, but then youre looking at 18 million to resign backlund. Depending on how much backlund signs for or if we trade him we will have plenty of cap for tkachuk.

I am looking at the long term impact, and its more then fine.

    Brouwer - well, umm.

I  get the hate on the brouwer contract, but at 4 years( he only has 3 left) who exactly is he preventing us from signing? I get that everyone hates the deal, but our Defence is deep, and our forward group is deep at this point. So hes not exactly preventing anything, and its not causing any harm, so for everyone that complains about the brouwer, stone etc contracts, they arent causing any issues. I get that everyone could say we could acquire a top RW with that cap space, but who exactly is that top RW, because I have pointed out that the top RW's in the league are almost impossible to acquire.

I dont get the complaints about contracts anymore, as long as BT manages the cap and puts a great team on the ice who cares.

I believe CAR put the word out they were not trading any of their considered top defensemen. This is a deal BT can afford to take a flyer on as we need a back up goalie and more RHSD for our pipeline which is practically VOID right now. No gripes about this deal.

So much for that murphy is being bought out.

I would rather see Ferland be given the chance than bring in Marleau or someone else and have Ferland knocked down again. Show some faith and see if he rewards you.

If I am BT my moves are done for now,

I dont see the harm bringing in marleau, but im not quite sure where he fits. The only spot I see right now is on backlunds line in the top 9 and im not sure marleau fits there. If they dont want to break up the 3 m line though a line of marleau bennett versteeg might be good.

I think people get way to caught up with idealism when roster building because you just never know who will gell with other players. Ferland works well with Gaudreau and Monahan because he is enough of a distraction for the opposition due to what he does physically. We tend to forget that he has a very good shot and good hands around the net, He also frees up space for JG and SM to allow them to do their thing. I would be surprised if this isn't the thinking of Flames management heading into this season and adjust if necessary.

Thats been my thoughts all along, especially with how the flames have talked about ferland.

We just have to wait for our first round pick in 2019 to get a top 4 RW.  :)

Unforunatly we arent going to trade for one, unless we make a big move. I shouldnt make it out to be a gurantee we wont trade for one, but theres very few players of the list below we could acquire or would want to acquire given the cost.

We just might have to do a first.  For a guy with his whole career ahead of him, why not, with a ceiling like that in a position like that.

Im curious what you think of gillies and parsons? What would be the point of trading a 1st for a guy like saros, when gillies or parsons might be ready in a year or two. Sure you could have the internal competition two of them battling it out, but why not address defence with the 1st and get a stop gap till those two are ready.

Pittsburgh has said that Jarry will need another year of development in the AHL.

Did they? I heard alot of talk saying he would be up with the big club next year, well nevermind then.

My guess is that none of those goalies are available, and Lehner and maybe Saros are the only ones who are ready to be full time starters, the rest aren't even ready for backup duty in the NHL.

They are ready if youre JJ. All joking aside, im assuming jarry will be the backup in pittsbugh next year.

This goes against everything the Flames committed to as part of the rebuild.

We didnt ruin the rebuild by trading for smith and hamonic, we have plenty of guys in the pipe. If anything this just took us a step forward without really giving anything away. Lets be honest here the first rounder next year probably a few years away, same thing with the 2nd rounders, so everyone can be upset about trading picks, but we arent talking guys who would help with the rebuild or help the team for a couple years more then likely.

By the sounds of it, Drai is looking for 9.  His agent is miffed about losing that first year towards UFA status.  Not worth 9.  More like a Tarasenko than Malkin.  One good year does not entitle you to that kind of money.

I think you mis read that, talk is the oilers are offering comparables to tarasenko, so around 7 million. So hes saying with mcdavid signing for 13.25, is mcdavid 7 million dollars better then draisital. Its an approx number but for comparables, can we really imagine if johnny had signed for 11 million and then we tried to offer mony a 6 million dollar contract, that seems like a slap in the face for a dynamic duo.

Yeah, I get where you are coming from, but the cap keeps going up, but the salaries don't.

When Ovechkin signed his deal it was for 19.1% of the cap, McDavid would be for 17.1% of the cap.

It sucks but it makes sense.

I dont know where everyone gets this number according to cap friendly, and according to my own math it was 16.8% of the cap of 56.7 million when his contract was signed in 2008. That aside that means the salary cap has gone up 16 million approximately, while the salary of the superstar has gone up 4 million in terms of cap hit.  Maybe im wrong on the math, I know the media has been saying 19% for ovechkin, either way interesting situation.

The thing about Draisaitl, is that if he were not in the shadow of McD, we'd be talking Johnny / Tarasenko numbers .. maybe 7 Mill ..tops

What is working against the OIlers (and Flames fans are loving it ) is the position behind McD

Yes. McD is generational ..yada yada..  but is he $7mill better than Draisaitl? A full Tarasenko Better ??

Without Leon the Ducks series is 4 maybe 5 games, McD for the most part did nothing in the playoffs , Leon was a force.

If they had held Mcd to a 5 year , say 9 mill?  let him have his payday in 5 years like all the other big names did ?  then they could hold Leon to maybe 7.

As its sits tho , if you give McD his crown at 13.5 , with all the other factors, I dont think its possible to get his camp to agree to anything less than 9 and change .. and personally just in a one on one comparison, I think they push for 10.

What i do feel tho, is that one is definitely gonna get ugly before it gets done

I agree completely. I know everyone is saying that hes just signing for the same percentage of the cap the other big name players did, but geez 13 million dollars? Thats 3 million more then the big name guys that have won cups etc.  I agree its going to get ugly, and im loving it, heres hoping they have to sign draisital to 9 million, id be ok with 8 million because they arent near deep  enough in talent to make up for having those 2 signed at 21 million. On a different note, mcdavid was responsible for almost 50% of the oilers even strength goals last season, and over 70% of their powerplay goals, talk about driving their offence.

If Bennett breaks out to the level of those two players, then that is a fantastic problem to have.

He doesnt have to break out much more then anyone expected, to get to the level draisital is at and hes asking for nine. Word is eichel might get an 8 figure contract as well if he has a good season. Im just saying bennett doesnt have to get mcdavid like numbers to reach 8 figures if he puts up 70 points, it sounds like the new ask.

  17. I cant be the only one who thinks this whol draisital situation is crazy, the kid had one good season, and one decent season, im not sure why hes asking for 9 million per if ryan rishaug is correct. Johnny proved alot more and signed for way less then 9 million, same with other players. The only reason i can think is that chia is a crap GM, plus draisital seems to not appreciate the way they have treated him

Going back to your forward pairs concept with the addition of Foo who by the sounds of it will be given the opportunity to play. Also resigning Versteeg would help with this scenario.

    Gaudreau, Monahan, Versteeg

    Tkachuk, Bennett, Lazar

    Frolik, Backlund, Brouwer

    Ferland, Jankowski, Foo

This would be my starting position for our forward group. Provides GG with a lot of options to move players around if necessary.

I dont think if versteeg is back he plays on the top line, granted mony/johnny were struggling when he was on that line, I dont think he looked great there. I do like the idea of playing brouwer with backlund, just to get him back into the swing of things, heres hoping he bounces back after a good summer. If we get rid of stajan your lines work out nicely, but I dont think the market is there, so heres hoping. I think id rather see

    johnny-mony-ferland

    tkachuk-bennett-foo

    Frolik-backlund-brouwer

    Stajan-janko-lazar

In another thread I had lazar playing with backlund but this works as well. I think Foo might be a better player then cross is giving him credit for, and might it least have jimmy veseys impact from last season, which while it doesnt make him a great player, he can put up some points.

Yea... Not saying we need a ton of blue chips but it'd be nice to see more consistent progression from some of the prospects. I'm really speaking more to our forward group. Of Klimchuk, Shink, Poirier, Janko , really Janko seems to be the most NHL ready, he showed steady progression. Klimchuk found his mojo last year but I'm not sold on him just yet, Shink and Poirier seemed to both take steps back. I like our group of prospects but it'd be nice to see more standouts and NHL ready progression from our older prospect forwards.

Yeah I agree ive been dissapointed in some of the guys like klimchuk or poirier, but I think klimchuk has just been injuries and im hoping poirier's substance abuse problem was the issue. I mean who knows it would be nice to see more progression for sure, im staying optimistic for now.

That is kind of what I was getting at "no cause for panic" message. Even on RW we have Brouwer for 3 more years and Frolik for 2 after this season. Should Ferland work out on the top line we are only talking about a 4th line RW opening to play with. Now nothing is forever, we could see BT trade both Brouwer and Frolik if we have adequate replacements coming on. We won't know what we have in Pribyl or ET for at least another season, my hope would Pribyl as a 3rd line and ET as a 4th line. I will say I hope the hunt continues for a better than Ferland option for our top line RW.

In regards to your pairings, the decisions made with both Backlund and Bennett for new contracts looks large just where this coulda all be heading.

I agree it would be awesome to have a better option, but ive said it before if ferland is consistent he will be good in that spot. I just dont think its possible in this day and age to get three high skill guys on your first line, makes more sense to spread the offence. Honestly even with patrick maroon playing with draisital and mcdavid, its not like hes high skill he just gets in on the forecheck and goes to the net with his stick on the ice.
