From what I've heard reading around is it is more cost of materials like steel that have gone up drastically.

Lumber is up 250%, steel maybe the same. Tack that onto a billion dollar project and..................well lets pause a minute, or maybe forever.

Really excited for Bennett. Essentially 2 2nds to me means teams wanted him.

Glad it was Florida, their 1st LW is Duclair.

    Barkov makes everyone better.

Mason Marchment is their roving LW.

Bennett will fit like a glove.

Fla quietly had a nice deadline.

Montour due to Ekblad LTIR and Bennett.

He could play either of these:

    Bennet-Barkov-Verhaghe 1st

    Vatrano-Bennett-Acciari/Lomberg 3rd

    Yes, Ryan Lomberg.

And he no doubt will do 2nd PP.

2 2nds for a player they needed is cheap.

Add Quenneville, I'm excited for Bennett

Look at their roster. It was missing a Bennett.

Treliving needs to go. I knew his constant hardball contract negotiations would torment the environment eventually.

    Here we are, dark days.

The work environment starts at the top.

Who are the Flames? A reflection of their manager. Give Neal's, Marksstrom's etc fat FA contracts, beat your core guys down in negotiations.

    You reap what you've sewn.

    He's gotta go.

And yes, Lomberg is an NHLer when you tell him to play hockey, not just always be a fireball.

So happy for Bennett, he'll be fine now out of a toxic environment.

That doesn't explain away Gio, Gaudreau, Tkachuk holdouts.

    Then overpaying FAs relentlessly.

BT is not going anywhere, nor should he.

FA’s have been getting over paid across every sports league since the beginning of time, nothing new there.

SB is going to FLO to be SB. He will never live up to his 4OA selection. Thank goodness BT resisted signing SB long term when other teams were giving out 6x6 to kids like bags of candy.

SB and Lomberg are going to rip it up, yeah!

I do wish the best for SB though. The Flames should be getting credit for nurtured him into the man he is today. But no, we want to talk about over paying FA's.

I was really pulling for Sammy. I'm a big fan, and I'm very sad that his days as a Flame are over, and that it went down this way. Hopefully he does well in Florida.

    Love.

Writing was on the wall for Sam a long time. He left the org saying nothing but good things about it, the org had nothing but good things to say publicly about Sam. The split couldn't have gone better. Full marks to both sides for taking the high road on this one and looking like a professionals. Flames got a nice return. Sam gets an opportunity elsewhere.

My advice to Sam would be to leave his gloves on until after he gets a new contract. The last thing FLO needs is Sam gone with a broker finger, minus 2 second round picks and nothing to show for it.

I've been lurking around but not responding, knowing all that I have is venom.

I can only use an analogy to stay away from being downright nasty.

The Flames are a batch of chili with no spices. Bland and evokes nothing when you taste it.

No garlic, no jalapeno, no cayenne, no smoked paprika, no brown sugar, not even a hint of worcestershire, no chili powder, no oregano, no basil, no salt, no pepper.

Fix goaltending, done, you've added more beans.

Tkachuk tries to be chili powder, gets told to tone it down. We need to be blander than vanilla.

So you sit down to a nice, hearty, comforting bowl of chili. The first mouthful you say, "wtf is this? Did you rinse the fat flavour off of the beef too"?

That is the flames in a nutshell. Tomato, ground beef and beans, call it chili.

So if you don't understand my analogy, at least I told you how to make chili, you decide how much of what. But use stewing beef, not ground.lol

And don't forget the onions and sweet and hot peppers and beef stock.

    You're welcome.

Most of the ingrediencies are there with the exception of the lottery pick spice. EDM and TO seen to have found the rare spice but they had to loiter outside the food bank for years on end. Maybe a little more marination with new chef may help. How is the chili in DET these days? I prefer ground beef in my chili and stewing beef in stew.:D

Hockey purests don't like the idea of chips in pucks or other modern ideas.

So, instead of 2 pros that make decisions seing things live and get a lot of things right, you want to have 5 people doing their job in a backroom or mom's basement.

Who do the C's talk to after a penalty or goal for an explanation?

Go to the bench and use a tablet?

    Oh, right they are faceless.

Instead of lights to display a delayed penalty, why not eliminate the ref watching on TV to look for penalties and have sensors on the pads.  A stick hack lights up red.  A punch is blue.  A trip is purple.

I'll stick to the imperfect system.  The NHL should police it's own.  They reward the better ones with playoff games.  The Wideman effect was real and they did nothing.  Mostly because Bettman was PO'd about CGY defending him.

Hockey purists? You mean like Don Cherry?
Obviously you missed the head lines about 2 pros capable of making appropriate decisions, hence the topic.
And you completely missed the point of having responsible refs police their zone, and not the outcome of the game. Nobody mentioned backrooms or basements, pretty sure the suggestion was along the glass or similar with best view and cutting edge tech to support.
When a captain skates over to talk to a ref have you ever him return satisfied or call over turned? I haven’t, so what is the point of skating over there?
If you like the imperfect game so much then bite your lip about “being so sick of changing standards in a game or from one game to the next”.
More eyes on the game, making the best decisions in real time was the suggestion while removing two obstacles on the ice.

Just to add to your thought, they can add a coloured light behind the opposing nets which indicate that a delayed penalty is being called. Then your goalie knows to empty the net for the extra attacker.

That's what I meant about the red and green lights. If red light appears around the perimeter of the glass then it is a delayed call on the visiting team. If a green light appears its going against the home team. Colors are just an example. No more looking back to see if ref has an arm up and no more guessing which team he is calling.

    2 hours ago, travel_dude said:

I don't know how that works for the other parts of their responsibilitoes that being on the ice matters.

    • goalie interference
    • high stick
    • lose sight of puck
    • pushed in
    • kicked in

That's the easy stuff.  TO is already reviewing stiff after the fact and stopping games (ex. goal not seen).

Considering they can't even get to a point where a chip determines exactly where the puck is, not having refs seems to be pie in the sky.

There are 3 zones on the ice. One ref responsible for each zone, he calls everything in his zone only.

One ref for each net, he calls everything related to the goalie plus evaluates all goals.

That is 5 nameless and faceless refs, with every technical tool and camera angle at their disposal.

Spot light shines down on where face off will occur after each play.

Not saying this is bullet proof but a possible means of removing 2 skating officials from the ice who can determine the outcome of a game.

  7. Maybe it is time to remove the two referees from the ice entirely. Leave the linesmen out there to continue to do their job.

With all the camera's and camera angles in the building today refereeing could be done from the rafters or along the glass. You could have multiple referees per games responsible for certain areas of the ice. If a ref see's an infraction he could signal to the entire arena by way of whistle over loud speaker if the play is dead or in the case of a delayed call illuminate lights around perimeter of glass, green light is home team, red light is visiting team so players know which side is being called. When the play is dead an announcement is made. Penalized player leaves the ice. No more arguing with the ref.

Firstly, thankyou for the sarcasm, lol.

Secondly, I should’ve elaborated on why I thought it would be a good idea against Ottawa. If you win the next two against Toronto, chances are Tkachuk has good games and sitting him is not a concern. However, if you lose the next two against Toronto and are falling deeper down the standings it could be from the fact Chucky is still struggling and could benefit from something like this. Not to mention sometimes a team needs to find other ways to score and win, and removing a player like him would force them to do that.
All of my thinking is to teach him to learn and adapt his game to become a better leader of the team.

But if I’m crazy keep the sarcasm coming, lol.

Maybe the expectations for MT are too high for some.

You bench players for not pulling on the "team" rope. MT does his fair share of pulling.

MT is tied for 2nd on the team for total points. He has 5 pts in last 5 games and is a +5 over the same period.

Not sure why we would consider benching such player and embarrassing him in front of bro and family, while damaging his relationship with the team.

If it's the MT shenanigan's you miss, we can save that for playoff hockey because it is not sustainable throughout the season.

    I think MT is fine.

I am going to put an idea out there regarding Tkachuk (who I love and is still in the running to be the teams next captain, but has a way to go).

We have all seen him struggling, whether he is disengaged because of what teammates said to him, or he wants to impress Sutter so much that he’s trying to hard, or his style just doesn’t work with Lindy and Dube. Or maybe a little bit of all that.
Next week they are in Ottawa and I think they should put him in the press box. Hear me out. He had recently commented that his little brother has been playing great and the team has come together and are playing a style that benefits Brady. I think that watching that game from up top without getting into the emotions of the game would be beneficial to one see how his line plays and to see there tendencies, as well as to watch how spaces open up and help to remind him to slow the game down and pick his spots better.
I would put Bennett in his spot and also give that a shot just to see what he can do.
    how crazy is my idea?

If OTT takes another 2 pts from us you would look like a genius.

I have a feeling it’s about eliminating the low percentage mistakes in the neutral zone, to teach them how to play it safer compared to the amount of mistakes they were making.

You can dipsey doddle in the neutral zone, lose possession, allowing odd man rushes against you, or you can choose the safe play and dump the puck behind their D and forecheck hard, creating turnovers in the ozone. I think Dutter likes the later.

Or maybe instead of always searching for the third wheel on that line, make those two non-mutually inclusive, but that is a concept that no coach has ever thought of.

SM would not have 200+ goals without JG and JG would not have hit 90pts without SM, they complement one another for the most part.

  12. 19 minutes ago, The_People1 said:

No offense to Ritchie but he is a good 3rd/4th liner.  He can't keep up with Gaudreau.  I get he brings physicality to that line but he's no Ferland.  He just doesn't have the skills, vision, awareness, etc.

But who else do we play there?  I mean this has been a failure we saw since the end of last season (and well before that even).  Leivo looks the best but the numbers aren't there to prove it.  Simon didn't work out.  Robinson isn't NHL material.  Bennett is a better LW/C than a RW.  Mangiapane doesn't like to play RW.  Dube is needed for the other line.  Now that we've ended with Ritchie as the best option, it's facepalms all around.

Maybe after the facepalms are lowered, JG and SM can look in the mirror to find a solution to their game.

Sounds similar to the SB excesses we have been hearing for years, no one to play with....rubbish.

  13. 1 hour ago, lou44291 said:

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I've been pleasantly surprised with Ritchie, and he does also have the ability to put the puck in the net (got 16 goals with Dallas a few years back). Maybe playing with Mony and JH will re-ignite that ability, and I say it's worth giving it some more time to see if their chemistry grows. JH, by my eye, looks less "scared" out there, and Mony had no problem roughing it up in front of the Oiler net (all by himself) last game. I think It's working right now for the team, and I'd like to see how it progresses.

And, as much as I see Leivo progressing with his play, he does create a mismatch for other teams and advantage for us playing on the "4th line". He's a scoring threat there with Ryan and Benny and that may turn out to be very advantageous for us.

I am on-board with the idea of trying Ras with Valimaki and Gio with Kyller. Tan-ifin shouldnt be touched - ever.

Yeah, I'm not moving Richie either. He has been noticeable in the line-up (in good ways) since given the opportunity to play a few weeks back. He can skate, he is physical and he can finish. Gotta think he is one of Darryl's favs atm, lets hope he can keep it up.

Another great radio hit by Kris Versteeg. The interesting part for me was the talk about the PP. In particular he talked about how Gaudreau prefers to play on his strong side, Cassie also mentioned in one of the games the Lindholm prefers playing on his strong side. What Versteeg said about needing to move their feet more if they are going to stay on their strong sides, was great.

Versteeg is a great analyst, I think he understands the game very well. He may even make a great coach one day if he so chooses.

Versteeg has mentioned some of the things we have been complaining about, like the drop back pass, which is the only play in our book, the puck carrier has an opening into the ozone but instead chooses to drop the puck back to JH who now has to beat all the defenders a second time, huh? Sure the play has a high rate of success but mix it up would ya! Let’s increase our success.

Or our PK that sits back in a box and continually shrinks it down until our goal light comes on. No legs.

Or our PP, playing on the outside along the boards because that’s all we can muster most times. No legs.

The first one is just poor coaching. The second two comes down to just being out worked on specialty teams.

We changed the coach and he doesn’t tolerate being out worked so we should see an improvement in those three areas.

  15. First of all, we need to change the title of this thread to "Darryl Sutter new head coach", and give Snowbear credit for starting it.

Second, No management does not follow what is said on these boards then react to it as some allure to.

Third, wish JW all the best, I think he is a good hockey man that would have sorted this out.

Fourth, I immediately smiled when I read the news.

Fifth, get used to 1-0 games, win or lose.

Sixth, everyone starts with a new slate, bring it or be gone.

Seventh, BT just hired his last coach.

    https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article/brad-treliving-laments-inconsistent-flames-amid-trying-season/

Here is an interview with Treliving written by Eric Francis.

I have to be honest, not really a fan of anything Treliving had to say in this article, and after reading it I am closer to being on the side of it's time to change the GM.

Firstly he says that they have an 'A' game and a 'D' game, and that they haven't seen the 'A' game enough. I think I have only seen the 'A' game once, maybe twice this season. I would say they have a 'B' game and a 'D' game, and that we haven't seen the 'A' game yet.

Then he talks about what he think the identity of the team should be. "I want to be hard to play against, hard-working, physical, tight-checking and have the skill and the ability to generate offense." IMO that's not the team he built, if this is what he is preaching from the top, then I can see why this team is so schizophrenic, they are being asked to be something they are not. Lucic and Giordano say that this team should be a "checking team that can score".

Treliving goes on to say "The bubble wasn't a big success story, but I think there was an identity for the team there--" this sentence is really disappointing.

I like a lot of what Treliving has done, but this interview shows me that the vision for this team gotten confused somewhere down the line. It might take a new voice to get it back on the track.

Would it have made you happier if he had said "I want a soft team, soft to play against, non-physical, loose-checking and have unskilled players so as not to generate offense."?? Would you have been happier with BT if he said that?

What happened there? Simply pointing out that people have opinions, and that one sounded a lot like JF, whom no one seemed to like around here. Retools happen every year, that's nothing new. Who you are using to retool with is another story.

The offense his died off the last 6 games, relax everyone. I have more patience than that, maybe its 7 games maybe its more, I'll give this team till TDL then I make decisions on every member of this team.

There is zero chance of it happening but if another team claimed Neil it would be a problem the Coilers would accept every day of the week over the next 3 years. Second best scenario is taxi squad. Please, please nobody claim him.

So, I wasn't sure where to best put this as it's not exactly Flames related, so starting a new thread seemed like the wrong call.

I am a peewee (now called U13) coach in Vancouver, and I pick up a lot of drills from Jeremy Weiss. Sadly, he's a die-hard lifelong Leafs fan - but he has a break down from the play-in round last year, and I thought that it was pretty good. It really illustrates what is, in my opinion, the sad reality of the Flames power play. The bump-back pass is so predictable, and I do not understand how the best way to break into the zone includes having four players standing still on the blue line. Totally worth the watch.

    Love.

Yes the bump-back pass is predictable and it's sometimes painful to watch especially when Gio does it because that's all he has, but it has a high percentage of success. I see Jeremy has a problem with players standing near still on the blueline but the first 3 video examples he shows were all successful offensive zone entries were they not? They lost the zone after gaining it and it had nothing to do with the bump-back. What you do with the puck after you gain the zone is a different story.

Hmm, hit a nerve.  You could just skip over them however it is more important to make  make a comment. Hey love the passion your defending the team , and thats exactly what is missing on the ice, some BALLS.. As for doing a consesus of the leagues teams as a whole, why? The whole premise of sports is TO WIN. If winning isnt the most important thing why keep  score. Also, your wrong in that the idenity of a team is not created on the journey to the cup. The description of both those clubs was established well before they entered the playoffs. Secondly, I am not of the mind set generation of " oh you tried, or hey you showed to work, hey thats a gold star. You do not get paid to show up you get paid to do your role. I had a good chin wag with Tim Hunter, Theo, Jeremy Ronick, Clark Gilles and Dave Semenko a few years back, They described todays players as this:. Todays players are pampered privilaged whinny brats. Its hand holding soft talk, and stroking them every day because the can not handle adversity.

There is a HUGE problem inside this organization and denying it doesn't help. From the top down it needs to be corrected, If you like average to minimal effort than this is the perfect club to cheer for. I want to see a cup in Calgary end game, just not make the playoffs is a losing mind set for any orgainization. The if statements from the coaches players and GM just solidify this club is and will flounder till someone creates a vision. From there your vision creates the strategy which will dicatate the mission, our vision is limp into the playoffs and hope, its a system designed to faiil

I like your passion as well. We are all here because we want our team to win. Your posts read much better with out the Blockchain in it, and I may have picked the wrong post last evening to address you about it.

The game has certainly changed from back in our hay day. The league has shifted from big and strong to small and fast. The league has done their best to remove the physical element out of the game by handing out cheap penalties to those who want to slow the game down. Now we watch smaller faster guys that you can’t touch or step in front of, or you’re penalized. This is the new game, some of it I like, some of it I don’t.

Maybe I’m a little more patient than you this season, its still early, we have played the stronger teams in our division thus far. We have added many new players which may need extra time to gel. I know it sounds like excuses but I think things will turn around for this team shortly.

  25. 6 hours ago, tmac70 said:

So this topic is more about identity. I know some belive that this phrase is a term that really has no merit, however I disagree. Everyone everyting has an some form of an idenity whether it be subjective or objective. So we look at last years winners of the cup one could demise that they were a fast well structured skilled team, Dallas was a larger phsycal well structured team, those are Idenities. So when you have people, fans, former players making comments that Calgary has no Identity or lost its idenity is a huge problem. Calgary regardless of the ERA, was a tough building to play in. Hell it was a battle to scrap points out of here and if you did, it was with ice bags and bruises. Now I get hockeys gotten more like a teen age girls pillow fight, howver it doesn't mean we can't be tough to play against. Our idenity subjectively or objectively all points to these points We are a semi skilled poorly structured soft hockey club that belives they can win games because they have been lead to beleive their good. Prove me wrong

Only 2 teams make it to the SC finals, they create an identity along the way. The other 28 teams have no identity according to your logic. Why does your identity only show up after a Flames loss? Never see you post anything except to drop a profanity based hammer on the team after every single loss. Maybe you should work on your identity?
