  1. And that pretty much says it all. Drafted 4th overall as a 2nd line center but never got the opportunity here. Another shining example of poor player development?
  2. Been a while since I've posted...but this is definitely worth posting to.... I am not at all surprised by this move. It certainly appeared to me that something had to be done because I have no idea how to explain the last half dozen games or so. Blown out by the Oilers, play 2 great games against TO, get blown out by Ottawa in game one and three only to blow them out in game 2 of the 3 game set in Ottawa. Then come home and blow that same Ottawa team. Talk about inconsistency! Now let's see if Darryl can adapt his coaching style with todays NHL. I am smiling right now because the players don't have a clue what they are about to go through since I remember him as a player and coach! Tough, tough, tough. And here we go!

So sad to hear about FF52's passing. I always enjoyed reading his insights and learned to respect his opinions. RIP

Here's what I got from his post game interview. He wasn't blaming anyone. I heard a lot of truth in his answers. He even stated that he needs to stop more breakaways. But the reality is that It's up to the team in front of him to limit those opportunities. They aren't! As a former goaltender, I can appreciate his take on their woes. Lately, I've been seeing so many horrible giveaways (we must lead the league in that category!) by this team, resulting in great opportunities for the opposition. I so love seeing JH on the blueline during a powerplay try to pass cross-ice through 2 opposing players. I also agree with Gulutzen's post game assessment of the team. They're fragile and lack push back under adversity. You see it in their faces every time they get behind. It's like "Oh no, here we go again!" Trying to catch up in the last 5 minutes of the game is not playing a complete game. The whole team is making blatant mental mistakes resulting in breakaways and 2 on 1's. I have also seen the defense out of position a lot more than they used to be. Is it the coaches system? I'm not sure. Is it because they're trying to hard or they are still growing as a team? I would prefer the latter and hope that things are corrected ASAP. Until the players man up or grow up, this will continue. It's easy to say the correct thing. It's harder to implement when you lack the confidence and belief to execute it. I will, however, still support my team...no matter what!

Wouldn't he have to agree with the removal of his NMC? Provided expansion will occur.

While Murray remains my first choice, I feel that his price tag just went a lot higher now that the Pens are on to the Eastern Conference Finals riding his coattails. We will find out later tonight if Dallas advances to the Western finals and the second round pick becomes a first round pick for us. Just spit balling, but could that 1st rounder + a 2nd be enough to get Murray out of PIT? Is that over payment to acquire him? Barring that happening, I think if we take the go big or go home attitude and are serious about getting that starter we need, Anderson from Anaheim is still the way to go. But that's just my opinion.

Does this observation put MAF into play for a possible move? Interesting...

This would make the most sense to me as well. The first pick from Dallas would be a pretty good bargaining chip for that search. If it becomes a second round pick, we could always add to make the offer more attractive. I think we can take Matt Murray off any plans we may have been dreaming about going forward. He is playing great under the pressure of playoffs! Pittsburg would be crazy to let him go.

I am OK with the way Ortio is currently playing and hope he can continue that kind of consistency until the end of the year. His confidence level must be at an all time high and I think it may expand who we look at to fit the bill in a 1a/1b scenario. Every goaltender has a bad game. It's what they do following that bad game that defines their usefulness. Woohoo! 100 posts

How about Colbourne or Ferland (not my choice but he is more or less a hometown boy), a prospect and one of our 2 round picks? Would that be a good starting point or final offer for Hutchinson or Hellebuyck (I'd prefer him)?

I have liked what I've seen from Ortio lately. He is showing great lateral movement and an ability to follow the play through traffic. But it is still a small sample size and I hope that he gets the chance play the bulk of games down the stretch. The team really needs to analyze what they have with him. Is he starter material or a perennial backup? I think once that has been decided, the Flames will know what they need to acquire or promote from within moving forward.

If this is where the Flames are looking, I would hope BT realizes that an extension would have to be a part of the discussion.

I can get on board with this addition to our team. Totally worth whatever it takes to get him here to don Red threads! Before next season, I see Hiller and Ramo gone. Backstrom as well. Sign Ortio to a 1 year show me contract and let him be the backup to Bishop. Gilles becomes the number 1 in Stockton with Poulin as the backup there.

I agree with your assessment. Except for the highlighted point. That 3rd period collapse against Ottawa was a total team collapse.

I agree. Start him in all games before the deadline and let the chips fall where they may. Hopefully someone will take him off our hands in a deal. Then, let the Flames use the rest of the season to evaluate Ortio.

per Friedman on HNIC: "He said he has heard the Flames inquiring about Matt Murray from Penguins AHL team, but can't confirm it. He also said all teams inquiring about Murray have been rebuffed so far. Which Cox says means he is unavailable. And for further smoke the Flames were scouting the Toronto Marlies vs Wilkes Barre Penguins last night Friedman also said the #1 priority for the Flames at the deadline is to acquire a goaltender. Murray is considered on the best goalies in the AHL, and could be ready to be slowly introduced into the NHL." What do you guys think about trying to acquire Matt Murray from Pittsburg at the TDL? What would be the cost? I think maybe Hudler/Russel and a 2nd? Maybe a rental, Ortio/MacDonald and a 2nd. Intriguing goalie for our troubled spot? And yes, this discussion is in the "Realistic Trade Discussions for Improvement" thread, but he is a goalie and thought it should be in here Stats pilfered from CP... 2014-2015 AHL All-Rookie Team AHL Best GAA (1.58) AHL Best Goaltender (Baz Bastien Memorial Award) AHL Best Goaltending Duo (Harry Holmes Memorial Award) AHL Best SVS% (.941) AHL First All-Star Team AHL Goaltender of the Month (February) AHL Goaltender of the Month (March) AHL Player of the Week (Feb. 8) AHL Player of the Week (Mar. 8) AHL Rookie of the Year (Red Garrett Memorial Award)
  17. I've seen Kessel in action so many times and I too would prefer we pass on him. Personal issues notwithstanding, I don't think he fits in with our current group and our current culture. IMHO, he doesn't have any type of consistent work ethic. He doesn't in TO. And I don't think that would change here...just my opinion though.

I also think Ramo is better positionally than Berra. We got a great return for the deal with Colorado and I'm quite fine with that. As for Ortio, he's going to get a lot more playing time in Abby. Now that he has had a taste for the NHL, he can work on the finer details to make him the best he can be. The pressure associated with a hopefully deep playoff run can do nothing but bolster his confidence level. I think it's going to be an interesting off season.

I remember reading somewhere that Kipper and Ortio had the same goaltending coach in Finland. If that's the case, then we can infer where that demeanor has been nurtured. Great showing by him and the rest of the team against the Sens
