  1. Mangipane lighting up the Italians with 2G 2A through 2 periods.

6-1 to Canada at the moment.

Shame Canada probably does not make the quarters.   Unless Kazakstan loses to Norway and they win their last game against Finland their hopes to through are poor

  2. Suprised they are going back to Smitty at 40.  Yeah he had a good season but still 40 for a goalie?  Wear on his body must tell some day after 15 years in the NHL.

But on the flipside he is only 43rd in games played as a goalie in the NHL.  So might be some more in him.

The Adam Fox thing is definitely the exception rather than the norm. Most kids, take Gaudreau for example, want to get that NHL money as soon as they can. They also burn a year off their ELC if they sign after the Collegiate season, starting their clock to UFA.

The loophole for college players is frustrating, but the players and owners collectively bargained it, so it is what it is.

As fans we just look at the Fox thing as a loss because he has turned into a good D.  We barely mention Erixon now as he only ended up playing 90 odd HL games even though we drafted him 1st round

I remember him saying he was planning to have the Flames play an exciting brand of hockey. In the year they went to the playoffs it was exciting. I know he went away from the never given always earned model the next year.

As fans we probably overplayed that a bit.

I loved Bh for his pressers they were pure gold.

Coaching wise was his 4 glorious years at Colorado down to the coaching or the players he had?   Hard to be a good coach on a crappy team.

  5. JJ it's not going to happen as much as you want it to.  Pacific is too weak for us to bottom out.

Monahan is not going to grab you much in return having a down year or two and being injured.

Gio is not going anywhere unless he wants to move.

Gaudreau wants to stay apparently but do the managment want him?

You should not move Lindholm when he is on such a good contract in a flat cap world.

The only real trade chip you have in the forwards to get anything half decent back is Chucky.

I agree you do not move Mangeipane.

I can see them standing still with the D.  Would not surprise me to see Stone back on a minimum contract 1 way as 5/6D

Is Mackey good enough to cement a spot next year so you can move one of Valimaki, Andersson or Hanifin?  Not saying I want to just looking at what trade chips we might have from the players.

Final quarter reports for the players.

At this point its pretty fair to say Mangiapane is one of our most important pieces, and easily our best 5v5 forward.

This also shows how good the top line was past just the eye test.

Also shows that perhaps we started seeing the buy in to Sutters system.

But I cannot see BT staying pat and giving this lot another chance.    I think he gave them some rope after the bubble but he has got to be seen to do something this off season.   Not sure how deep it will go though.

  7. Yeah I realised it was 6 weeks out of date after I posted.

Still trying to get my head around the stats but from what I can see it looks like Gio actually bounced back toward the back end of the season.  Probably as a result of playing with Tanev.

The worying stats appear to be Andersson's down year.

Reading between the lines in Sutter’s end of season presser - who am I kidding, Sutter is as direct as they come - he basically winced at Hanifin and Andersson being relied on as a 2nd pairing with them being so young. He then goes on to say the third pairing is even younger, with a look on his face. Man he likes his vets. The only thing I see opposing this though is he had doughty in LA who was a young #1 D... so it can’t be that he dislikes young players, I guess he just expects the world out of them.

Would not be suprised to see Stone back.

Age is relative as far as I am concerned.  Andersson should have learnt a lot this year and Hanafin looked much improved this year.

I know I'm not the only one but take away the postponed games I really like the way the division only season played out. Playing the same 6-7 teams 9 times builds up rivalries and animosity towards your opponents, something that I think has been missing in recent years league wide.  A few of the playoff series are showing that.  I hope they keep it that way once all thigs are back to "normal".

Which brings me to the question, do you build your team differently if theres a repeat of this format as opposed to a normal schedule?

I think it was a novelty that lost its appeal as the season progressed.

Playing the same team 9/10 times got old pretty quickly.

I think the league will move back to the more traditional format as soon as they can.

    Golden Knights

    Oilers

    Flames

    Canucks

    Kings

    Ducks

    Sharks

    Kraken

    That is a weak division.

double post - but I'll use it. This one is for you JJ:

    - If we do acquire Eichel, and it's not going well, we've got a pretty valuable asset to trade on the market for futures and whatnot for a rebuild. What do you think? Does it make an Eichel trade more palatable for you? Or is rolling the dice for Bedard, etc more worth it in your eyes? Honest question here. I have no knowledge of the up and coming talent. But we do know a bonified #1 C is unprecedentedly available on the market now.

    Known versus an unknown.

You cannot bank on getting Bedard.  Firstly I do not think that the Flames as an organsiation would condone a tanking strategy and we are not that bad a team to be bottom dwellers.  We seem to be a perpetual middling team.   Secondly you have no guarantee that you end up with that pick due to the lottery so I think that is a very dangerous strategy.

However that said I am not convinced that Eichel is the saviour this team needs.   Comes across to me as too self serving and not a team player.   But I can understand the interest in him.

Not one of our players in untouchable as far as I am concerned.

The farm looks a bit bare at the moment and we may have to (should) wait on Zary and PelItier.   I do not think Phillips will get a fair look.   Sutter will not be able to overlook his size.  We are pretty small as it is, or play small and I am not sure we can take on another smaller player to play in the top 6.  Hope Phillips proves me wrong - the guy deserves ever success he can get.
